On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

The dwarves in the expedition that left the hold probably won't be as happy about abandoning it as the ones who were trapped in it, with the support of the northern holds I could see Dum recovering.

I mean, who would do the recolonizing? The Dawi of Dum are going to leave. I can't ever see other dwarfs going to replace them.

It's literally on the Chaos Wastes.

The Loyalist dwarves who left on an expedition to get help, encouraged by the hashut cultists to lower the number of loyal Dawi in the hold. Those dwarves have been trapped in the time warp but are still there and a lot less time has passed for them, they don't have any of the bad memories the dwarves who stayed have so they will probably still want to resettle the hold.

I'm actually wondering if the ones that went on the expeditions will even want to stay.

This is pure speculation, but how Igna and the others with her from Dum have felt has been immense pain and loss, compounded with seeing their home...annihilated from what it used to be...Idk if Dawi stubbornness would lead them to try to rebuild or to tear it down so that the enemy can get nothing from the theft.

There has been canon cases of them taking what they have and leaving if the means to hold it aren't strong enough or the wounds taken by the location are deep enough, Black Cragg for example.

I highly doubt that. The first major issue is that those dwarfs are not going to be enough to resettle Dum. The second issue is all of the desecration. This is not the Time of Woes, the Dawi have yet to despair as a race. I doubt that many of them would be able to tolerate living in a place so ruined. This isn't Karak Ungor or Vala-Azril-Ungol. The third issue is the Chaos Wastes. I somewhat doubt that the time distortion effect will fully dissipate with Horgrimm's death. That means Dum will likely need an extraordinary amount of Runesmiths, which would be very difficult to supply. The fourth issue is that their Queen is going to be leaving. If nothing else, they would follow her.

As they'll risk falling to Hashut as a consequence of the War or the Time of Woes that follows.
I'd hope that being personally killed by Gazul -twice -would mitigate his ability to be an effective power source/actor. His cultists should be weaker than those of living chaos gods, and those guys don't seem particularly good at converting dwarves even when pressed.

It'd be sort of ridiculous for Hashut's corpse to be better at corrupting dwarves than he or his direct competition are in canon.

I really don't think Dum should be resettled after all this. I'd vote for razing the mountain and settling the loyalists to somewhere between Karak Vlag and the other side of the High pass to guard it. The frozen fjord starting from Uzkulak and flowing into the Frozen See needs to be watched.

There isn't that many of them. They can fit in just about anywhere.
Yeah, but a Hold lead by people who despise Chaos on a personal level would be a great strategic boon to place in the area any Everchosen has to come through. They'd agree that Dum is a lost cause, but being Dawi would only go as far back as necessary. That just seems to be the perfect spot to also grant the benefit of extending the Underway to the East and provide a second path to the North.

Every dwarf in that has seen what has happened to this hold despises chaos. They have gone through enough no need to add extra burdens on them.

@soulcake, how is this for a write-in action?

[] [Simple] Paper Cuts: Paperwork is necessary To efficient industry, but every dwarf resents the time it takes. Make a writing desk with the Rune of Transcription for every dwarf and griffon in Kraka Drakk who can possibly use one.

We're going to struggle for combos to keep that unique, and since this is a new and not commonly known Rune I doubt it would get as much leeway as the Rune of Light does.

Also there's probably a guild of scribes that we're putting out of business.

I see you want to enter open warfare with the Runescribes Guild.

You always knew this day would come, you remember well the faulty pen incident with Bokki Twochisels like it was yesterday even centuries since the Dwarf himself perished, now the time of your vengeance has arrived. That and they dare use the word "Rune" in their name! Bah!

But in all seriousness, this has serious political ramifications to consider! You'd invalidate an entire career path for many a learned Dwarf, even if the Loremasters may appreciate such a thing. Now, aiding the Scribes Guild in fulfilling their task and maybe pushing them to expand their remit to other pursuits that would inadvertently increase the output of and therefore the amount of writing available, which via osmosis would slowly improve the literacy rate among Dawi!?

WELL...

...that's none of your business

EDIT: To be clear. This will take political finagling, invariably use Favour to pull off, and may not be what you intended, but something close to what I think you're going for can be done. 'Course, there are implications as to this course of action.
EDIT x2: I do apologize if I created offence, the tone I wanted to convey could not have come across.

"I would be disquieted if they weren't! Not when we're fighting other Dawi, of all things. Dawi that are...allied with Beastmen, Dawi that are throwing about magic like a Wazzock whose had one drink too many throws ale out of his mug!"

Oh damn it, the chaos dawi got the element of tactical surprise again, because we didn't tell anyone. Oh dear, I hope that did not get anyone killed.

Increasing literacy sounds like a good idea.

@soulcake Would either of these be less inflammatory?

[] [Simple] Paper Cuts: Hand and Feet have been replaced. Dwarves have once again practice their craft and show the bearding's how to do it Right. For some the replacements sadly fall short and allow the basics but do not let the Dwarf progress. Nowhere is this more evident than in the writers Guild. Hands that once produced masterpieces of Art and Word that transcribe songs and deeds, forever immortalizing the Moments now barely have the control to write a copy of a list. BAH. The rune of transcription properly applied will change this and potentially remove a lot of the repetitive work altogether, allowing skilled dwarves to focus their skill on the parts of the job that need their expertise. Make a few dozen and check back in a century or two to see if it proves itself.

[] [Simple] Paper Cuts: That drink with Bokki Twochisel of the Runescribes Guild and Dolgi Threeaxe of the engineer's guild about limb replacement has left you pondering. Lornas strange Quill, the runic pen is a better tool and has attracted some interest but it is not but not one that solves the basic problem of a replacement limb forever trapping a scribe at a certain level of skill. You can't do better YET but there may be ways around that with the rune of Transcription. It would take a new tool and a different way of thinking but it has potential. Then there is the obvious use, lessening the tedious repetitive work of the skilled Journey Dwarves and
Masters (NOT for the apprentices. How else are they going to learn?) and allowing them to focus their skill where it is REALLY needed. Perhaps talk to Twochisel, Make a few dozen set of transcription slates and come back and see how it has gone in a century or two. No need to get hasty.

.....Runescribe's Guild?

O.O

See, this is what happens when you get almost all your WHF lore from quests. :p

I'd like to discuss that literacy increasing option more later, but in the meantime, what about if we limited the desks to griffon/dwarf royalty, guild heads and cult leaders? Just royalty? Just griffon royalty?

I have a feeling the Runescribes probably take royalty as extremely prestigious patrons, but in terms of literacy as odd as it is for a Iron Age equivalent society I kind of expect most dwarves to be able to read Khazalid just due to sheer age making things not comparable to humans.

You know, I assumed that it was just made up to fill a role in dwarf society that logically existed. But then I looked it up while I was getting ready to say that.

Runescribes Guild

The Runescribes are the scholars and historians of the Dwarfen race; the majority of loremasters come from Runescribe clans. Their primary role is to write, revise, and maintain the records of their settlements, including the Book of Grudges and the Book of Remembrance. Some runescribes study...
This line is interesting

Article:
Among the member clans of the Runescribe craftguild is the Runesmith clan. Only the most worthy of this particular clan are selected to become runesmiths.[1a]

Even assuming that clans is a misspeak here it seems to suggests that all Runesmiths are Rune scribes but not vice versa. Interesting to see guilds within guilds and I wonder how Rune scribes relate to Thungni.

And I think what soulcake was hinting at was that making them for the Runescribes guild enabling them to do more work and in doing so making it more accessible would have trickle on effects of other dwarves learning to read through greater exposure and cultural relevance.
