On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

That's Divine DRM right there, working to make sure if someone other than the crafter who has windsight is observing the process, then nothing happens. Runesmithing is divine after all, so Thungni can shut it down from his end.
So we need to make the windsight glasses before releasing this knowledge to the public...

We don't want every runesmith going full Odin so that they can use one of these eyes...

If its quantum mechanics that means Necron Style Dolmen gates are on the table. Screw the Underway instant transmission time. If its magical DRM, that kinda sucks and doesn't fit the old one mo given all their other creations care share the burden of their casting.

There has to be something more.

For the record, this will never not be funny. Its like they hate Tzeench because he's associated with birds rather than anything else.

Wooooo
The Journal of Skalla Honestheart:

Worked with Khazagar apprentices on several more reasons to hate Tweety:
REASON 1476: He ruined turkey
REASON 1477: He ruined chicken
Reason 1478: He ruined duck
Reason: 1479: He ruined geese

THE DEEPEST LORE.

Observing someone else who doesn't have Windsight while they make a rune seems to mess it up. We should get our other former apprentices to make something very minor in front of us to test this, and once we've created the Windsight glasses, we should try it again while Karstah is wearing them. There is much to learn and test.

Hmm.

Two obvious options I can see for why that failed.

The first is that the winds (the actual energy) objected to being viewed while it did it's thing.

Or something about Karstah's mindset (being observed) meant that she didn't/couldn't channel the right way.
The forging failed on "let song remind you". Not sure if it's relevant, that's not the part of the chant I'd expect to be disrupted by observation.
I don't think it is this because there a shit ton of people watching us build Runiversity. But it might be racism because Snorri is a dwarf
I don't think they watched us actually strike the runes, that always seems to be done in secret.

Guys, the step of the forging that went wrong was the point where Karstah's Stilling Field was supposed to retract. The issue definitely has nothing to do with the Winds. Something strange went on with Karstah's soul. Probably DRM like others have suggested.

I mean we are assuming Thungi is sapient and actively observing us observing the process. What about that would be object to?

Are we?
We assume that sufficiently momentus moments catch his attention but we've also seen it catch the attention of the other ancestors and we don't believe they're watching us all the time.
WHF gods aren't omniscient or omnipotent, I don't know that we think that he is always actively watching ever bearding strike their second Rune of Stone.

We can draw a spectrum from "Runesmithing is an arcane tradition that operates magical procedures in a more controlled way than any other species can manage it." to "Runesmithing is bottling up Thungni's divine miracles for later use.".
And generally I think we lean more towards the non theurgy magic side of this because otherwise we have to question how did he invent runesmithing to dole out his miracles before he became a god?

Taking as granted that yes we are assuming all that and you fall on the divine side of the spectrum. Perhaps we were about to see some aspect of the Glitering Realm that he did not want us to see because it would drive us mad... Or perhaps this was a god of dwarves being overprotective about a secret he didn't think was yet earned.

Snorri needs to test being in the same room but staring at the wall with the windsight eye while Karstah makes a rune. That should test whether it's direct observation or proximity with windsight that causes the failure.

I'm leaning more towards the divine DRM, Thungi put the "if another being with windsense tries to observe the process, shut it down" and didn't account for someone to solve the consternation by inventing dwarf windsight

Edit: it would make even more sense when we consider the fact that deamons tend to have some form of windsight, he probably didn't want some changeling sneaking in and figuring out the runes so he put that in place

*Spites take* ...that is large presumtion. Unless confirmed, I think large project makes larger sense...but 20 years off the classes...we need to replace them with something else.
It's the two possible timeframes that have me suspicious; five year minimum would be about the period I'd expect caring for a Dwarven infant/toddler to take up too much time for classes, while twenty years would entirely cover the part of Dwarven childhood where it's expected for someone to keep an eye on the beardling/plaitling full-time even if it's not always one of the parents.

Yeah, before the Elgi, Demons were the creatures with Windsight that Thungni knew of. It would make sense to make a defence against them stealing the secrets of Rune Smithing.

Couple of things I feel important to say.
1. we've done it.

I think the right way to describe why the rune failed under observation is the most strict interpretation. The secrets of the Ancestors are not yours to pry. At least, not yet...

Does Snorri reveal it? At the most strict literal reading of our actions and what we have taken to doing has major implications. As in look at what he's doing something that not even the Ancestors could solve. A Potential Path shows us one, what if we rose hire than that?

Perhaps he needs to be able to see the deep magic/otherwise improve the windsight eye to watch other folks do runes? The Runes let him do it with the windsight eye because its him doing it himself/he can only learn so much from his own crafts.

I think this version of Windsight can see deep magic correctly.

Eeeh?

Also, wth is DRM meant to mean in this context?
Wisdom with weapons is the name for a weapon trait that she's working towards earning. DRM is in regards to runes being actively protected from being reverse engineered by nondwarfs.

DRM stands for Digital Rights Management, which is code put into computer programs in an attempt to ensure it doesn't get used by people who haven't paid for it. This can be anything from winrar's infamous impotent 'pwease pay for winrar' message to bricking your entire computer

So I guess we need to test again with another apprentice who doesn't know that we have windsight, to see if that makes a difference.
