On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Snorri & Karstah
- [X] [Difficult] Starlight Pt. 1 [1 Karstah AP] ✓
-- [X] Choose: Master Rune of Conduction [T4 Radiant Pegasus Blood + T2 Dragon Essence], Rune of Lightspite [T4 Radiant Pegasus Blood], Rune of Echoblow [T4 Elder Wyrm's Gas Sac]
- Starlight Pt.1 complete! [Karstah has taken over this commission.]
-- Mediocrity, how it galls a perfectionist's mind, and you have raised a perfectionist in your own image. Karstah's no dibna, but she is a Runesmith and that's closer than most.
-- No Combo.
Bah... BAH! Knew Echoblow/Lightspite did not work on there. Did the Radiant Pegasus Blood + Dragon Essence have any interesting effects on the M.Rune @soulcake?

-- For reasons that confound you, observing Karstah create this item led to its failure… the implications are confusing.
Oooh interesting. So is this quantum mechanics uncertainty shenanigans going on here?
Because we observed the winds, the winds don't do what they're supposed to do?

its the double fields. gotta be. we're discovering the reason why runesmiths are supposed to work in seclusion. wonder what well see if we try to put two of the same rune on something

I did not expect aethyrbinder to set combo. That was unexpected but welcome and it looks like it imparts the antimagic to the ashstorm that we were talking about trying to add at some point. Looks like it's just shy of a t5 as well and is exactly what we needed to safely stormforge. Slight shame that it can't send the power directly into an item but good enough.

Karstah got a T5 from her actions in the campaign. That's wild yo.

No idea why the forging failed, Snorri's been in the room before so it shouldn't be the cause. Maybe he unconsciously started a forging when he thought of it and that clashed?

so snorri cannot wear his eye when going to one of those runesmith tournaments or he ends up screwing over all the dwarves smithing there

That's an interesting reaction. Do the winds change when being observed? Does a Runesmith's stilling field? Or is it an unconscious reaction on either Snorri or Karstah's end?

We need more data.

So Karstah got a T5 Dragon Heart from the campaign. We need to use 2 hearts on Skaud. Considering her mania in regards to Skaud, I am hopeful she donates it to the cause. The odds of a sapient gronti should go up with a t5.

Hmm.

Two obvious options I can see for why that failed.

The first is that the winds (the actual energy) objected to being viewed while it did it's thing.

Or something about Karstah's mindset (being observed) meant that she didn't/couldn't channel the right way.

If the winds change when being observed, maybe we should enlist the help of a Brana or an elf mage? They've spent far longer using magic than Snorri has had the chance to observe it, maybe they'll be able to point something out.

-- Then one foggy Keg End's eve, the Gift Giver did say. "Rudil with your helm so bright, won't you strike out this Grudge tonight..."
Really playing up the santa allegations arent you? Now making his Huscarls reindeer lmao.

Beyond that nice Snorri let's it be known that he's solved Durins Consternation he's going to be swarmed by Runelords wanting to know... Perhaps it'll be a good idea to make a monocle version of the rune set so they don't all start ripping out there eyes to use said rune set.

Oh boy, if i am reading this correctly, The World That Was got really good buff, especially control wise.

Very useful
Heres the old and new quotes to compare since the Rune list Set hasn't been updated yet.
The user is reminiscent of a volcanic eruption; cutting winds filled with ash and volcanic glass stir up a pillar of dark storm clouds around them as lightning and magma spew out to strike enemies or destroy incoming projectiles. If they strike the earth they can create fissures that spew magma or shards of obsidian, If they strike the air they can send out targeted bolts of lightning or those same cutting, ash-laden, winds.

- Set Combo upgraded, The World That Was +/The Primeval Past: [Makerstrike +, Mountainsouled +, Storm Mantle +, Surge Protector] The user is reminiscent of a volcanic eruption; lacerating winds filled with ash and volcanic glass stir up a pillar of dark storm clouds around them that can combust into flesh searing flames. Lightning bolts randomly and frequently strike out from the tempest that can be large and powerful enough to down a minotaur in a single blow while fissures erupt and spew jets of molten iron beneath the enemy's feet. The user can control the strength, direction and timing of both the lightning and magma as well as shape and manipulate the clouds at will. When their blows hit the earth they create either volcanic eruptions in miniature, churning up mounds that spew molten rock and creating miniature storms around the site of impact, or kick up waves of ash, magma and chokingly toxic gases. Striking the sky can now send out lightning and fire as a wave or in concentrated bolts of plasma. These effects are suffused with and can even release Deep Magic, increasing their potency and pushing away the Winds of Magic.
Some amount of this probably more detailed prose rather than a literal description. Jumping from cutting to lacerating... While I'm sure the winds are stronger just because the whole thing is overall stronger I don't think should be taken literally. However it makes it harder to access the difference in power between "spew out to strike enemies" and "large and powerful enough to down a minotaur in a single blow". I'm sure its more powerful, but I'm not sure how much more, 10%, 100% 1000%?
The storm always was controllable to some extent previously, so I think stuff like manipulating the shape of clouds and such are upgrades of previous feature rather than new. I would assume that they aren't controllable to the point of making it safe to fight in for allies especially once the other power ups of the storm are accounted for, we might have just stayed in place there.

Striking the sky and being a deep magic source are both entirely new features or at least they were so minor previously they were unmentioned.

???

Do you want Snorri to shave his beard because that's how you break Guide Rules to get your beard shaved.

Could it be Runic DRM? Not beginning the process properly because forging of one runesmith is observed by another who can actually see whats going on and it pings the protection?

I'm not suggesting they learn guild secrets, simply see if they can't give some wisdom that will let Snorri think outside the box. We've asked a Brana before on how they view the winds, don't see why we can't do the same here with the winds acting odd and Karstah's blacksmithing failing.

That's Divine DRM right there, working to make sure if someone other than the crafter who has windsight is observing the process, then nothing happens. Runesmithing requires a divine blessing after all, so Thungni can shut it down from his end.
