[K] Found Colony- Northern Shore

"Oh, Mighty King of the Rivers, your servant brings ill news from the Northern Shore! Efforts to expand into the mountainous lands there, as is your right, have been forestalled by the barbarous Hill-men, who defy your rightful claim to the lands of the world! Worse still, when informed politely by your servants that the land did not belong to them, they became belligerent. Your servant fears they will need convincing of a military nature before they will accept your divine personage as their lord."

It would be War, then. The Hill-men, who in days past controlled the trade of Tin in the North-Sea, will not surrender to the Son of Khemet, the King of the Rivers. Second-hand reports from other lands tell that they are powerful, having subdued all who would strike them. And there were (reportedly) many who would strike them. However, first-hand reports were few and far between - apparently, any scout who had been sent to their lands stopped reporting after a year or two, apparently having been caught. The last one to report mentioned that he had been welcomed with open arms into the service of a local potentate, his literacy in their rough, throaty tongue being a desirable quality. For some reason, his heritage seemed to be a non-issue. Despite how this would indicate they are desperate for bodies, they are admired and feared by those around them. As such, they pose a threat to your line's claim upon the adoring vassalhood of the world! This would not be easy, but Khemet's Will would be done!

....

It MUST be done.

Made direct contact with Ymaryn assets!
Two Kings of the Hill Enter, one leaves!
Decision?
[] [KotH] Bring it (Declare Great Power War with the Ymaryn, both remain King of the Hill status until the end of the war, winner retains it)

[] [KotH] Give way (-20 Prestige, -4 RA, -4 Stability, small amount of territory loss, all civs that had the 'Take the Crown CB' gain 'Weak' CB for the next 3 turns, Colonies gain "Faithless" trait for 3 turns)

Preparations for the King's call to war would be done. Reports tell that the warriors of the Hill-men bear stout armor and weapons, of a kind you have not heard of in such numbers. This must be countered. You have a great store of bronze, thanks to your wise ancestor's reclamation of the Tin trade from the North-sea long ago. What should be done with it?

[] Arm as many of your lesser soldiers as possible

[] Arm the Nomarchs and their retinues

[] Try to balance both options

[] Hang onto it

Anyways, we clearly can't back down. No one near us is a particularly strong competitor, but it would be unwise to lose Colonial loyalty. Plus, that -4 RA would be a PitA(y). Undecided about the arming option… I don't want to empower the lower classes and thus promote rebellion, but I'm also too fond of our current lineage to empower the very people who would assassinate and replace it. So we can either give weapons to both parties and counterbalance or hold on to the bronze. Iirc, from the market interlude, the northerners for sure have iron, though, regardless of the naysayers' belief they don't so it's better to not be sparing… Yeah. Let's just release the bronze. It's not like we're going to actually bother w/ the Lighthouse for another 20 turns or so. We've had that project for at least two bloodlines.

Go to war, maybe do a New Trails next turn so that our levies can reach the North faster? Hopefully they'll realize we're a) determined and b) unstoppable and surrender. Easy Prestige will let us make a more colonies, ideally to the south. Or maybe we could try establishing a trade post up in the north? It would be a pleasure to finally get around the Constantinople, and maybe we can use the Black Sea to establish some northern trade? If we don't accept an immediate surrender when we do accept their surrender we can probably get enough land to hit the sea.

@Knowledgeable Coconut Is this correct? You haven't updated the map in a while.

I know you've said they're vaguely Welsh-y, but, like, how so? Their endomyn, obviously, but can you give us an idea of what other sorts of words they use? Also, are there any notable similarities with other languages around the black sea, or anywhere else we're familiar with?

Anyway, unrelated to that, it's really annoying we have to get this war started right now. I was hoping we could work up to another golden age and then bust open, like, algebra. Our math has been really synergizing with Edifices of Grandeur. One trait I really don't regret.

Yeah, it's super weird. But KC confirmed that they're speaking some kind of weird celtic-y language back when we talked them into letting us have the tin (which, in retrospect, I bet they're regretting). Their name does sound like Cymry after all, that's why we suspected it in the first place.

King's musings
The following excerpt is part of a larger text written by Desdydyn, a Ymaryn philosopher-king, copied by the scribe Dalyn during the Ymaryn reorganization sometime during 200-205 A.D. The full text contains the completed musings on this particular case, but a shortened excerpt will be shown to display the points relevant to modern psychological studies.

"And so comes to my attention the woman Yenyna, The Dragon General, whose record I have received from the priests maintaining the [sanitarium] of the Dragon Temple. In my questioning of her, I have found her to be deeply disturbed and displaying a number of maladies at once, a rare and unfortunate happenstance, but I must confess to my fascination with her particular [case] and the blessings bestowed upon her by the cohabitant. I have seen the prescribed treatments, and have concluded that only another person, who resonates strongly with Yenyna's human soul and strengthens it against the affectations of the cohabitant, will relieve her of her spiritual pains, the calming herbs being too weak for this cohabitant."

The text itself is part of Desdydyn's greater Musings on the Spirit collection, showcasing the advanced psychological diagnostic techniques this ancient civilization pioneered for use today. The patient in question is the ubiquitous Dragon General Yenyna, who modern psychologists have supposed suffered from a severe case of schizophrenia, as well as other possible conditions caused or exacerbated by her mental state during the course of the war during that time period. Despite her illness, Yenyna displayed a strong aptitude for tactics in relation to the time period, and by reading this text we can see that even budding scientists and scholars of the past were fascinated with the unique ways mental illness presented itself and the concept of savantism in general.

Terms contained in brackets are similar to the chosen replacement, which has no direct translation or is more comprehensible in modern language. Ymaryn "Sanitariums" were actually a cross between modern physical therapy centers and in-patient psychological care centers. The Ymaryn term for "Case" literally translates to "condition of one's spirit."

Translation difficulties
"So, before you go, about the woman commander?" you ask, feeling more than a little curious. The strange northerners' delegation had tactlessly danced around that particular question the entire time they were in your palace, and you wouldn't have them getting out of it again, now; at the moment of your final chance. "For someone to stymie my army so forcefully, I would even consider making her first among my brides, if your king would accept, following my generous gift to your own lords?"

The translator of the tribute party gulped audibly, casting furtive glances at his companions and relaying your words to their leader. The man shook his head emphatically in the negative, but before their translator dared speak, you interrupted, your initial amusement and minor irritation ballooning to something close to actual anger. You knew the world was not your oyster, but surely they could at least give you her name? "I would be most displeased if you didn't tell me who she is."

Now it was your translator's turn to pale, wrongly thinking you might take offense with his rough translation of your words. Nearly squeaking, the words traveled between different men until they reached the party's leader again, who stiffened, then sighed. Clearly they held some terrible fear, perhaps that you would demand her hand by force? If she was indeed the young woman off and to the side of the parley after the Great Battle, you could imagine there were no shortage of suitors among her own people, even with her small stature and unflattering form. Perhaps some lord, or the king of the Northerners, even, had already taken her hand?

The passing of words between your translators was strange, this time. With reticence, their speaker told your speaker, who then turned to look you in the eye, and proceeded to drop to the earth to speak a desperate prayer. Quite fed up with the ridiculousness of the situation, you lost your temper. "Speak up, you bumbling fool!"

"A-ah... M-m-most high Sun, ahh, Master of the F-flow, err... My God! They say they fear how the general will react if she sees the man she... failed to kill in battle, once again."

You find it most unsettling, that as you aligned the brilliant mind that arrayed the Northerners against you to the Sokbhet-possessed demon you fought for so many long minutes at the climax of the battle, you actually feel a thrill of exhilaration. Your following wince is mistaken for understanding of the situation, or maybe they think you are recalling the prominent scar upon your face. It is only natural, I suppose, that a God find the mind of another divine so intriguing, no matter how dangerous they are.

It is only natural!

You had a difficult time bedding your next few nights of concubines. You are ashamed as you realize... you would rather whisper with Sokbhet's champion than lay with mere women.

[Robespierre] Guillotine Doubters
[The Revolution] Guillotine Robespierre
You know... first-ever omake time! for... a historical event... not related to this quest...

Of course, in spite of the Philosophy Megaproject progress, the future is rather unsettled. While the bourgeoisie is less violent, the economy hasn't significantly improved. More farmers are moving into Paris from the surrounding countryside as the aristocrats are unable to buy as much of their goods. This additional concentration of people, along with the breakdown of order in the previous turns, has caused a flourishing of the kind of conditions that the demons of disease and vice love. The Committee of Public Safety has been able to barely maintain their legitimacy in the eyes of the public, largely due to Robespierre delivering a series of brilliant speeches on eliminating slavery and the death penalty (+1 Progress on Megaproject!)

Unfortunately, the ranks of the aristocracy are getting slim, making the current purge policy have lower stability returns. The Church obviously blames the doubters of the new regime, stirring up trouble and vice in the bourgeoisie in an attempt to return aristocratic power. Robespierre is uncertain, but believes there may be foreign influence behind the continuing unrest. At the very least, blaming it on foreign powers could buy the government the time to finish the progress and end the crisis. Noone would be pointing fingers at him, at any rate. On the other hand, some whisper that Robespierre is naive and holding them back from purging the corruption from the lords...

Academics of the Desdydyn Epoch and Epic of Yenyna
So I got really bored and wrote an academic essay based on future analysis regarding our civilization.

Just a warning, it is rather dry reading. It's meant to be. I'm not terribly familiar with archaeological terminology, but I've done my best. Also don't forget to read the foot notes.

Much of the terminology and names are mashed up welsh words with the inclusion of aramaic consonant sounds. I basically sat there sounding out various words.
__________________________________________________________________________
Article:
A short summary of The Desdydyn Epoch and the Epic of Yenyna

The Desdydyn Epoch of Ymarr, named for the Valleyhome King at the time1, is widely regarded as one of the most turbulent and influential periods in the recorded annals of Ymaryn history that we have available to us today. It is also one of the most highly detailed portions of Ymaryn history left intact. The period extends from roughly the twentieth century BCE through to the mid seventeenth as measured through radiocarbon dating of the Xohyr Plate2 and the recently excavated Tiruchel3 and compared to the written chronicles at The Wall of Kings4. It was during this period that the Ymaryn civilization underwent a fundamental metamorphosis from an admittedly prolific agrarian culture into the mammoth regional power we see up until the Anatolian Extinction in the second century CE5.

The Desdydyn Epoch of Ymarr can be divided up into four distinct phases of action and development on the part of the peoples of the Yllython coast6 and the surrounding regions7. Naturally, for such a turbulent time, the Desdydyn Epoch begins and ends with war.

The First Phase of the Desdydyn Epoch begins with the reign of King Phygrif the Nomad and the sack of the city of Xohyr as told in The Xohyrd8. The reliability of the Epic and its translations is debatable, and even the existence of Phygrif himself is questionable as his name appears only within a small temple site to the northeast9. The sack, however, is a known event; evidence of which can be found below the Old City of Xohyr in the form of the Xohyr Plate2.

The two and a half centuries following Phygrif's supposed reign which delineates the Second Phase of the Desdydyn Epoch is marked by a massive period of expansion and shift in the Ymaryn culture group and an extremely prolific period of peaceful development known as the Peace of Desdydyn1. The end of this period is marked by the election of Desdydyn to the throne, Ymaryn contact with Ancient Egypt10,11, and a following series of extremely bloody conflicts along the Yllython coast and throughout the Ymarr Basin12.

This period of conflict that marks the Third Phase of the Desdydyn Epoch is well known and majorly chronicled as the Epic of Yenyna13 and corroborated by numerous sources found across the region. The period can be can be further subdivided into four distinct sections: The decades immediately preceding the first arc of the Epic and the first through third arcs of the Epic.

The early decades of the Third Phase are poorly understood, and there are few extant primary sources to corroborate what inferences can be pulled from the Epic of Yenyna. What information does exist, paints a picture of a series of relatively low-level border skirmishes between Ymaryn and Egyptian combatants and the opening series of battles that marked the entry of the Deyrnah Ucheldich14 and the Ceffyll Taranch15 into their own individual conflicts with the Ymaryn and the other regional polities. Together, these conflicts are called The Bryniah Wars16.

Within twenty years of the onset of conflict, Yenyna appears as the Dragon General in the historical record outside of Ymaryn influenced territories17. The events that follow in the historical record are captured in remarkable detail in even more modern translations of the Epic of Yenyna. Those events will not be recounted here save for the mention of the recent recoveries by a UC-Berkeley team excavating portions of Dôl Gwayadd18. The climax of the third arc of the Epic of Yenyna is described as a battle of massive proportions; proportions often argued as far too large for the age. Indeed, Dôl Gwayadd and its surroundings have always been a veritable hotspot of Early Iron Age Ymaryn artifacts, Egyptian Bronze, and human remains. However, from the distribution of artifacts and bodies, the accepted number of combatants was judged at no more than four thousand total; a number far below the numbers suggested in the Epic. The Berkeley team, utilizing information from a relatively new study on Ymaryn burial practices, unearthed a mass grave containing some fifty-one thousand individuals interred in traditional Ymaryn fashion. After further investigation, a similar grave containing an approximately equal number of corpses was found at the opposite end of the valley and showed signs consistent with removal of the eyes common to the Middle Kingdom era burial practices.

The decades immediately following the Battle of Dôl Gwayadd, covered in the fourth arc of the Epic of Yenyna, are commonly considered to be closing years of the Desdydyn Epoch and the events collectively form the Fourth Phase. The early years of this period were marked by a short but prolific peace for the peoples of the Yllython coast and the establishment of the Ancient Lancosh Games19. The final years, however are aptly described in the final, tragic, verse of the Epic of Yenyna as 'The Regret of Ymarr,' and today, the results of those years can be seen in the half-melted ruins at Tiruchel.

The events of the centuries following the Desdydyn Epoch, up until the Extinction, should not be discounted, of course and every year new translations form the Judean Archives and the Wall of Kings are released. Few periods, however, have had so much impact on our modern world and such is why scholars have devoted themselves to the subject from as far back as the Renaissance.
__________________________________________________________________________

1. Ymaryn kings reigned, on average, for an estimated fifteen to twenty five years. The names of the Epochs are a modern creation and named for the King whose name appears most in the record. Please keep in mind, that the entries inscribed on the Wall of Kings are essentially undated until the sixteenth century BCE, as the Ymaryn had no developed calendar system. The entries are divided up into distinct and named Epochs based on the kings who presided over the pivotal moments of the era.

2. The Xohyr Plate, discovered in 1963 during construction in the Old City of Xohyr is a sediment stratum that exists below the originally accepted ruins of the Old City. This layer is characterized by an extremely high amount of char and solidified pools of precious metals. The Xohyr Plate exists only under a 4.54km2 section of the Old City.

3. Tiruchel – Ancient Ymarish for Highland. The location was the regional capital for a relatively small kingdom that bordered Ymarr to the south. According to the Epic of Yenyna, in response to repeated treachery, the Brenn Uchel (Ancient Ymarish for Highland King), his family, and his courtiers were barricaded in the royal palace and burned alive. The fire was hot enough to produce the melted columns of Tiruchel we see at the site today. The city itself caught fire shortly afterwards and also burned to the ground.

4. The Wall of Kings is an overhanging cliffside along the ancient road leading from Old Valleyhome to the coast where the history of the Ymaryn was carved into stone.

5. The Anatolian Extinction was a bolide impact of truly massive proportions on par with the Tunguska Event of 1908, though it occurred at a much lower altitude. In an instant, the entirety of the Ymarr Basin and much of the Yllython coast was devastated. Only a few colonies on the far side of the Yllython Sea escaped intact.

6. The Yllython Coast Peoples collectively refers to the civilizations that developed around the Yllython sea and the Ymarr Basin.

7. Numerous other regions were in regular contact with the people of the Yllython coast, including the ancient Egyptians, ancient China, and the other proto Ymarr groups of Northwestern Europe.

8. The Xohyrd is a Ymaryn Epic Poem covering the sack of Xohyr and is dated to roughly the twentieth century BCE.

9. At some point, nearly all mention of Phygrif was erased from the Ymaryn record and only remains on a single remaining wall at a temple site to the far north east of what was considered the core of Ymarr.

10. Prior to this, the Ymaryn did, in fact, have contact with Egypt for centuries; as evidenced by the presence of Ymaryn mercury globes in the tombs of the Bent Pyramid at Dahshur and some rare Ymaryn iconography in the walls of Heliopolis. The majority of this contact, however, was conducted through the Strait of Trell and was likely facilitated by the unnamed civilization present there.

11. Contact here was an almost immediate clash of ideology.

12. The Ymarr Basin is a watershed that extends south from the Central Asiatic Steppe to the Indus Desert. It is bordered on the west by the Yllython coast and the Ucheldi Uplands, and bordered on the east by the Caspian Rise.

13. The Epic of Yenyna is the most widely known Ymaryn epic poem and chronicles the rise and tragic life of the Dragon General of Ymarr.

14. Deyrnah Ucheldich – The Ancient Ymarish name for the kingdom that bordered their southern reaches in the Ucheldi Uplands. Translates roughly as Highland Kingdom.

15. Ceffyll Taranch – The Ancient Ymarish name for the kingdom that bordered their eastern reaches in the Ymarr Basin. Translates roughly as Thunder Riders. The leading theory is this was a group of settled steppe nomads or similar group.

16. The Bryniah Wars – A phrase coined by Sir Francis Dollen who published the first translation of Ymaryn script in 1893. Bryn is the ancient Ymarish word for 'hill,' though it can also be translated as 'king' or 'chief.'

17. Ancient copies of the epic can be found inscribed as far away as Karnack and the tombs of The Valley of Kings, the Judean Archives at Cyprus, and on a Ymaryn tablet found in the tomb of emperor Zhaoxiang. The epic also survived through oral tradition and was known well before the ancient records were rediscovered.

18. Dôl Gwayadd – The name of the final battle of the The Bryniah Wars and the location in which it was fought. The name of the valley survived to the modern day intact and is one of the few complete words in ancient Ymarish to survive unchanged to the modern day. It translates to 'The Bloody Vale.' Curiously enough, the name of the location is nearly identical in reconstructed Kemetic and is considered evidence for the vast amount of cultural exchange between the Ymaryn and Ancient Egypt.

19. The Lancosh Games, revived in 1936, were, in the ancient world, an international athletics competition that drew together parties from all over the known world. They were named for the Ymaryn city of their origin: Lancosh, which loosely translates to "Red Shore."

So, has anyone deciphered the prophecy yet. I think we can all agree it talks about the decline of the Ymarin (Khmetri?) and the ensuing chaos, but I'm still unsure about some things. For example, that deafening roar. It doesn't really fit with what they're doing. They bribe their enemies, they don't threaten them.

Soldiers crowd the city to the bursting point. The atmosphere in the city is tense, the threat of war fraying the nerves of the soldiers and citizens. Every day more soldiers arrive, long columns of men marching across dirt tracks towards the border towns. The space within the walls has long since filled, and so the tents sprawl around the city, fields of white and gray slowly engulfing the surrounding farmland. The farmers grumble as they see their harvest trampled inch by inch. They will endure, as their grandfathers had when their fathers went to war. Now, their sons go to war, and victory shall come.

Their honor demands it. The prophecy foretells it. It was on everyone's lips these days, recounted by every priest and orator. The Dragon of the West was coming. The Dragon company hsd marched towards the border, their general among them. The priests said she was a cripple, her body brought down by the sheer amount of blood curses the Thunder Horse had sworn against her in the last war. The hate still ran deep, and the warriors hsd seethed when they first heard their chance at vengeance was so close. But the priests pled with the King to wait, and he agreed. The prophecy must be followed. It was the only way.

When the sun set, and the Dragon fell, only then would they strike.

Today, the day of the fall, a mild summer breeze blows through the fields. It is a nice day. The farmers work their animals, the workmen ply their craft, merchants heckle goods and the soldiers train at arms. If not for the latter, it would be a perfectly ordinary day. Even so, the war appeared far away. Just like the weeks before, the scouts had reported no movement among the Ymarin forces on the river. They were still there, still watchful, just waiting. The King is getting impatient, and the soldiers restless. Humor helps them pass the time . Perhaps, one jokes, the Ymarin are waiting for their General to take the first step. Perhaps, another replies, they daree not leave the forest for fear the sky will fall upon their heads.

As the soldiers joke and the King debated by his priest, the sun slowly sets behind the distant mountains. Beneath a blood red sky, citizens and soldiers alike are slowly returning to their homes and tents. Suddenly, a single cry interrupts this ordinary. The Western sky, red like blood, is glowing. The air feels hot, like a sweltering summers day. As the glow brightens, more and more people stop to observe this clearly divine sign. When the light becomes blinding, they avert their eyes. Some take of clothes to deal with the now suffocating heat.

And then the screams start. People flee from the now burning light, stumble halfblinded, looking for shelter where they can find it. The priests take refuge in the Temple, the citizens in their houses, the soldiers in their tents.Others hide in ditches or behind walls, doing everything not to get caught by the burning light.

Then, suddenly, the sky ruptures and the Gods themselves wipe clean the land. With one big sweep they reap the fields, flatten the smouldering tents and tear down the houses of the city. No single house, not even the Temple, is spared. Thousands die, crushed by the ruins of their homes. Those who remain are wounded or unconcious. They do not escape when the fire engulfs the city.

Really, I say I'm going to take a week off, and then you do this?

Always that one guy
One angry voice against the consensus of the priesthood and the patricians.
'So we're all agreed?'
'Aye.'
'Yes.'
'The god's desires are clear.'
'Alright then, now we must prepare to--'
'I OBJECT!'
'Oh gods, not you...'

*Obviously drunk patrician stumbles to the front*
'I DEMAND WE KILL THEM ALL! NO MERCY FOR THE HORSEF*CKERS!'
King: 'Dammit, who let him in. I thought I told the guards to lure him to the taverns if he showed up...'
'And how do you propose we do that?'
'IT'S OBVIOUS! THEY HAVE HORSES, BUT WE HAVE SOMETHING BETTER!'
'What? We do?'
'SHEEP! WE SHALL RIDE OUR FLOCKS INTO BATTLE!'
'...Right, we'll do that then. Hey, you know, I heard there was a tavern that was giving out free beer.'
*Patrician surreptitiously hands coins to guard, guard leaves to find tavern*
'I KNOW WHERE I AN NEEDED!'
'...Gods dammit, being king sucks.'

Oh shit, what just happened? I thought the plague wasn't affecting us because of our hero king going 'burn 'em all, and quarantine anything that moves'? How the hell did we just explode in a single phase?
Georg said:
Dammit, we were completely wrecking those arrogant bastards too. Just a little more, and we could have taken down the ymaryn! @Academic Tree, what were our quarantine rolls? How bad did we critfail them?
Academic Tree said:
You guys rolled well for your martial, as expected with a heroic martial leading a bunch of light cavalry against a group with only a small number of their own cavalry to counter you.

And then you rolled double nat 1s on your disease rolls.

Which, well, you saw the result of.

Good news, there are survirors of your tribes that escaped death.

Bad news, survivors ran pretty much everywhere, with the Ymaryn picking up the lion's share of them. So all your cavalry tech just got adopted by quite a few groups, with the Ymaryn actually coming out of this stronger militarily than they were at the beginning.

What? How! We killed like, a million of them!

I'm calling bullshit on this, AT. You said that this was a civ killing plague, and that it was probably depopulating most of the cities in the world. How the fuck did the Ymaryn manage to come out stronger from that? Their cities should be ash by now, and their rural population should be in shambles. So how the fuck are they fine?
Carrage said:
Ah well, time to get back to running the main 'horde'. We'll get our chance next time we get a hero to crush these arrogant lowlanders.
Academic Tree said:
You only hit their vassals. And, well, I did say almost all the cities of the world. It just happens to be that the Ymaryn are obsessive about sanitation, so their cities are actually mostly fine. Better off than their rural cousins, actually. So while other urban empires would be collapsing at this point, the Ymaryn are just cursing their shit luck and trying to get people to leave their cities and go farm again.

Historians are going to be really scratching their heads at this one, honestly.

About that. You know how I mentioned survivors? Well, a good chunk of those, somewhat diseased, survivors decided to head back to the steppes. And, well...

Well, well, well. You know the Khan who has been stealing your kills?

His disease rolls for this phase were 94, 1, and 1 again.

They uh... they got wrecked.

Suck it, Nomads! Hah!

Nomads are infected, Ymaryn resistance slowly being eroded, and we have a chance to start infecting the steppe.

Holy shit praise the merciful and benificent Vulture.

We just needed keep hitting 'em with disease rolls; they had to succumb eventually.
Not!China, here we come!

So, what you're trying to say is that we got to eat a SECOND nation via critfail? Wow.

I guess that kinda makes up for the bullshit Ymaryn rolls on locking down their cities. I guess they sucked up all the luck in the region. :p
WingedOne said:
How did we do against the Ymaryn do this turn anyways, @Macademia Nut? Are their cities broken yet? I mean, they were getting their asses handed to them by nomad hordes, so that's got to have eaten up all their reserves, right?
Macademia Nut said:
The good news about the Ymaryn is their cities are bleeding population as people leave to work the empty farms. You are doing pretty good there.

Bad news is that you've got no luck on actually breaking into their cities. And probably won't for the next full turn, honestly; they rolled up a Hero King to keep things working. And a Spiritual Value emphasizing cleanliness.

I gotta ask: WHAT THE SHIT DID THEY EVEN ROLL FOR THIS TO HAPPEN?! How lucky do they have to be to get a Hero AND an applicable value? Can you even roll values ad-hoc like that? I thought you needed to have an open slot for them.
Macadamia Nut said:
They had a slot from completing a quest, and the hero was a reward for completing a megaproject.
That said, if you had struck a turn later, they would have chosen a different reward and filled up the slot already, so yeah, that was pretty lucky.

I call bullshit. I know @Macadamia Nut said this was going to be hard difficulty, but this is just ridiculous.

Did I mention? The king they rolled up?
He's actually Poor Martial, Average Diplo, Heroic Admin, Heroic Mystic.

Feature Creep
Frankly I'm amused by the idea that even though we've been preparing for the dam for hundreds and hundreds of years we still have to make revisions at the absolute last minute. And that in a few more turns we'll probably have something that would have made the dam even better.

A manic clerk bursts into the room. "We're building the Dam!"

"Oh ha ha," says another clerk without looking up.

"No, seriously. The king just gave the order."

"Really? This is going to be awesome. We can pull up the old plans and get started immediately. It should be finished in no time!"

Six months later.

"If we use that new concrete stuff, we can double the height, allowing for substantially more canal work in the lowlands."

Many months after that.

"If we make a few adjustments here here and here, we can add a series of overlarge mills at the base, processing the grain and ore for the whole region."

Many years after that.

"If we reinforce this section with a steel core and extend the Dam to Redhills,, we can support fortifications along the top while doubling as a trade highway."

Several decades later...

"With the nomads invading, we should add catapults to the top and use it as a defensive hardpoint to break them."

Several centuries after that...

"Our designs have replaced the catapults with the new cannons coming out of Redhills. If we add a series of artillery towers in the points listed and extend the "Dam" to the spirit channel, we can extend our firing range effectively into the lowlands, preventing any invading force from pushing inwards."

Even more time passes.

"If we introduce a gradient of height along the length of the design, we can use the entire length of the Dam as an aqueduct for the entire lowlands region."

A millennia of Dam building later...

"If we expand the aqueduct plans and cut through this mountainous region here, we can create an aqueduct that is navigable by ship, acting as a super highway throughout our lands."

Soon, it is the year 2055, and the Ymaryn Dam is visible from space. The project is expected to be completed any month now, and always will be.
