Anyways, we clearly can't back down. No one near us is a particularly strong competitor, but it would be unwise to lose Colonial loyalty. Plus, that -4 RA would be a PitA(y). Undecided about the arming option… I don't want to empower the lower classes and thus promote rebellion, but I'm also too fond of our current lineage to empower the very people who would assassinate and replace it. So we can either give weapons to both parties and counterbalance or hold on to the bronze. Iirc, from the market interlude, the northerners for sure have iron, though, regardless of the naysayers' belief they don't so it's better to not be sparing… Yeah. Let's just release the bronze. It's not like we're going to actually bother w/ the Lighthouse for another 20 turns or so. We've had that project for at least two bloodlines.
Go to war, maybe do a New Trails next turn so that our levies can reach the North faster? Hopefully they'll realize we're a) determined and b) unstoppable and surrender. Easy Prestige will let us make a more colonies, ideally to the south. Or maybe we could try establishing a trade post up in the north? It would be a pleasure to finally get around the Constantinople, and maybe we can use the Black Sea to establish some northern trade? If we don't accept an immediate surrender when we do accept their surrender we can probably get enough land to hit the sea.
@Knowledgeable Coconut Is this correct? You haven't updated the map in a while.

Also, are there any notable similarities with other languages around the black sea, or anywhere else we're familiar with?
Anyway, unrelated to that, it's really annoying we have to get this war started right now. I was hoping we could work up to another golden age and then bust open, like, algebra. Our math has been really synergizing with Edifices of Grandeur. One trait I really don't regret.

Yeah, it's super weird. But KC confirmed that they're speaking some kind of weird celtic-y language back when we talked them into letting us have the tin (which, in retrospect, I bet they're regretting). Their name does sound like Cymry after all, that's why we suspected it in the first place.

A View From The Water's Edge- A Khemetri Negaverse Omake(@Academia Nut, and @ the thread at large, I hope you like this I wrote it in about an hour at 2 in the morning)
[X] Found Colony- Northern Shore
"Oh, Mighty King of the Rivers, your servant brings ill news from the Northern Shore! Efforts to expand into the mountainous lands there, as is your right, have been forestalled by the barbarous Hill-men, who defy your rightful claim to the lands of the world! Worse still, when informed politely by your servants that the land did not belong to them, they became belligerent. Your servant fears they will need convincing of a military nature before they will accept your divine personage as their lord."
It would be War, then. The Hill-men, who in days past controlled the trade of Tin in the North-Sea, will not surrender to the Son of Khemet, the King of the Rivers. Second-hand reports from other lands tell that they are powerful, having subdued all who would strike them. And there were (reportedly) many who would strike them. However, first-hand reports were few and far between - apparently, any scout who had been sent to their lands stopped reporting after a year or two, apparently having been caught. The last one to report mentioned that he had been welcomed with open arms into the service of a local potentate, his literacy in their rough, throaty tongue being a desirable quality. For some reason, his heritage seemed to be a non-issue. Despite how this would indicate they are desperate for bodies, they are admired and feared by those around them. As such, they pose a threat to your line's claim upon the adoring vassalhood of the world! This would not be easy, but Khemet's Will would be done!
....
It MUST be done.
Made direct contact with Ymaryn assets!
Two Kings of the Hill Enter, one leaves!
Decision?
[] [KotH] Bring it (Declare Great Power War with the Ymaryn, both remain King of the Hill status until the end of the war, winner retains it)
[] [KotH] Give way (-20 Prestige, -4 Stability, small amount of territory loss, all civs that had the 'Take the Crown CB' gain 'Weak' CB for the next 3 turns, Colonies gain "Faithless" trait for 3 turns)
Preparations for the King's call to war would be done. Reports tell that the warriors of the Hill-men bear stout armor and weapons, of a kind you have not heard of in such numbers. This must be countered. You have a great store of bronze, thanks to your wise ancestor's reclamation of the Tin trade from the North-sea long ago. What should be done with it?
[] Arm as many of your lesser soldiers as possible
[] Arm the Nomarchs and their retinues
[] Try to balance both options

Truly, Crow has a great sense of humor.Desdydyn had been elected king in order to continue the work of what many saw of as a great time of peace and prosperity. What he got instead was to reign over what was shaping up to be one of the greatest times of conflict in the People's history. While neither he nor the People wanted a fight, they would not abandon the land they had already settled because the Khemetri claimed that they deserved it just 'because'. There was some possibility of a misunderstanding, of a mistranslation, but even then there could be no good reason for the People to give way.
So our count of Trelli mercenaries was correct(that they had 3 bands, and about 3 more paid with the hire of these 3). We hired every single one off them to prevent Khemtri from hiring them(and it'd have been VERY messy if they did, considering we got a draw with them on our side)Desdydyn gave permission for his more martially inclined subordinates to bring war to those who would force the People from their homes, while also authorizing the mass employment of every mercenary they could hire from the Trelli, which was a significant number. This also kept the Khemetri from trying the same trick.
Our coordination is suffering because of Angry Mob warfare vs Disciplined warfare. Hopefully the Excellent Martial War Chief can figure out how to combine these.Relying on the advise of advisors because he honestly had no idea what he was doing, Desdydyn was kept in the loop on the fighting as he worked to keep everything else stable and assist in training up a fresh batch of Carrion Eaters to assist with the inevitable casualties. Soon enough word was filtering back, and it was not good. The People weren't exactly fighting with their mercenaries, but there was a great deal of conflict over how the two groups went to war. As it was, the Red Banner and the local warriors were frequently moving slow just to try to keep the mercenaries under some semblance of control by forcing them not to run forward to slaughter and loot everything indiscriminately, but that meant that they were nowhere near as effective as they could be... which was a distinct problem because the Khemetri were not pushovers.
We Have Reserves check. They use the same basic fighting style, though with worse foot equipment, they have a lot of dudes(probably using Slave inflated econ for martial?)By all accounts they had massive armies of spearmen and bowmen, and while not as effective as those of the People, they were no slouches in combat.
And they also have an Honor of Elites variant. In particular they had particularly dark skinned scouts that were peers for the Blackbirds, and while they did not have access to iron they had an almost alarmingly ridiculous amount of bronze. While apparently rare, there were tales of heavily armoured nobles who were clad in bronze thick enough to bounce arrows off of.
Too bad we brought Iron Age Anti Tank shots. Normal arrows don't pack enough momentum to penetrate their armor except in a gap(and hitting such a gap is hard to do in battle)...but iron bolts DO pack that much. So they fall. The decision to look into making oversized bows that required two people to span but could be fired by a single person was apparently paying off in a few cases there.
So far, our garrison forces and mercenaries are stalling them from any advance, but not pushing into their lands. Those valleys are going to turn red with blood. In any case, while the People certainly weren't losing, it was hard to say that they were winning either. For the most part they were just sort of keeping the Khemetri away from any major settlements in Hatvalley and Gulvalley, but the frontier settlements of both kingdoms were at serious risk from rampaging bands of warriors and mercenaries, and the valleys in between were becoming a place for both kingdoms to feed warriors into like grains into a mill.
Metalworkers have turned into an Iron pinata. Next generation of nomads will be hell. Theres going to be a lot of very surprised people when they arrive and buttsex the whole region. With refugees from the metal workers scattering from the conflict by the Storm Wolves, the People were gaining somewhat in terms of expert labour, but the secrets of iron were certainly being spread.
And the Highlanders have Iron now, so they might actually last. However, soon enough the king received a mysterious package, a note attached to it that said, "Intercepted in transit, source in danger, of critical importance."
Inside the package he found a sword and two blocks of iron, all a symbol of a bear, the current crest of the Highland Royal Family. Soon enough artisans were summoned to examine them, and their conclusion was the same: these were of lower quality than what the People made, but not by much, and certainly higher than what the Metal Workers were doing. The artisans clearly did not have the same depth of experience or access to good quality equipment, but they were not starting from scratch either. The conclusion was simple: the Highlanders had someone acquired the secret of iron from the People without them knowing, at least a generation ago.
Some consideration had the older people noting that if one wanted to smuggle an artisan out of the kingdom without anyone knowing, pretending that person was dead would be useful, especially if a skilled ironworker ending up dead wasn't considered that unusual... so perhaps those old rumours of a Shadow King were in fact related to the Highlanders somehow secretly stirring up trouble to cover for stealing off with the People's secrets?
Well, good thing we didn't flag as Weak(just imagine what they'd have done if we did), but we do need to fortify the Cataract region as well as Hatvalley soon.It seemed implausible, but then again the Highlanders clearly acquired iron somehow. What they might do was unknown... but having an iron armed power that was at least moderately hostile able to strike into Hatvalley and potentially disrupt resupply into the province and Gulvalley while fighting the Khemetri was distinctly not good, especially with the Thunder Horse being on a conquest spree and the Swamp Folk no doubt interested in pouncing upon the Txolla at the first opportunity.

Well, Phygrif was right about one thing: War unites the people.
+1 Loyalty across the board, and we have enough specialty slots not to be particularly concerned about running out.
Triangular sails are officially on the list!
This basically let you catch the wind in your preferred direction as long as it isn't outright opposite the wind direction, and also to run on momentum by minimizing wind profile on demand.
Very useful in the Mediterranean and Black Sea, where proximity to land produces somewhat erratic wind currents.
And we have the two new weapon types here.
The Gastraphetes is the simple one man crossbow. It doesn't fire any harder than one person's maximum muscle power, simply storing and releasing it more conveniently...but normal bows can't use this maximum, and the gastraphetes leverages your back and leg muscles to load rather than the relatively weaker arms.
Bolt throwers, as described in the text, are metal bolts(which due to density, packs a far higher maximum KE) fired with a mechanism that needed two men to load.
Yes, it's the first crew-served weapon.
This packed a pretty crazy penetration, which the enemy armor wasn't rated against, though we can expect them to further thicken armor in a few turns in response. Pretty much ideal for Blackbird snipers to take out enemy elites.
Truly, Crow has a great sense of humor.
So our count of Trelli mercenaries was correct(that they had 3 bands, and about 3 more paid with the hire of these 3). We hired every single one off them to prevent Khemtri from hiring them(and it'd have been VERY messy if they did, considering we got a draw with them on our side)
Our coordination is suffering because of Angry Mob warfare vs Disciplined warfare. Hopefully the Excellent Martial War Chief can figure out how to combine these.
The Romans made it work, by sending irregular auxillaries out ahead, to cover the advance of the main force, but this carried the risk of the irregulars breaking and thus shaking the morale of the main force if withdrawal was disorderly.
Alternatively we could just use them as shock and then march up our core troops to press the advantage.
On the bright side, it seems the Trelli mercenaries aren't copying our Tactical Phases!
We Have Reserves check. They use the same basic fighting style, though with worse foot equipment, they have a lot of dudes(probably using Slave inflated econ for martial?)
And they also have an Honor of Elites variant.
The scouts look like they should be from one of their african colonies, skin colors grow a lot darker further into Africa, so it's possible that they're drawing from the central African jungles for their scout auxillaries.
After all, scout type units are common in Swamp, Forest and Jungle biomes, but less in plains and floodplains like they have.
And while they don't have enough bronze to give everyone some, they had enough bronze to turn their elites into walking tanks. This would be bronze helmet, cuirass, bracers, greave and lamellar skirts/tabards depending on their experience
Too bad we brought Iron Age Anti Tank shots. Normal arrows don't pack enough momentum to penetrate their armor except in a gap(and hitting such a gap is hard to do in battle)...but iron bolts DO pack that much. So they fall.
So far, our garrison forces and mercenaries are stalling them from any advance, but not pushing into their lands. Those valleys are going to turn red with blood.
Once we get the techups, we REALLY need to fortify it hard.
There's very little hope of pushing through valleys and massive numbers to actually hit their colonies.
Metalworkers have turned into an Iron pinata. Next generation of nomads will be hell. Theres going to be a lot of very surprised people when they arrive and buttsex the whole region.
And the Highlanders have Iron now, so they might actually last.
Cosmopolitan Acceptance's hidden drawback...it's kind of difficult to maintain information security for anything as commonly in use as iron.
And of course, the underworld had decided informing the King was important, fortunately. Presumably it wasn't this bit of the underground.
Well, good thing we didn't flag as Weak(just imagine what they'd have done if we did), but we do need to fortify the Cataract region as well as Hatvalley soon.
We'll just have to move to the next qualitative advantage then. And try to assimilate the Shadow Network into our government with the Golden Age.
@Academia Nut
Is this outdated?
We know:
-Hatvalley built SOME Significant Walls before we took them in.
-Hatvalley definitely had some settlements
-Passive Policy built one set of Significant Walls
-But neither the number of walls or settlements increased, though Watchtowers DID drop 10%?
Or maybe this value should move to the main sheet like Sustainable Forests did?
Also, since we have 10 Expansion slots, did Sacred Forest reform or is the trigger point lower?
Also outdated.

Anasthetics will help our Carrion Eaters a great deal in this conflict.
And annoy the Khemtri if we add the trade goods.
And it's mostly accidental.Yeah.
Actually for a polity whose weakness is losing land we sure have a lot of land.

We have renewable sources that others do not. Moreover those sources are of significant cultural value to us.
