Welp, no bonus update showing the new dungeon.

Basically, it's what I put in the update: there's a big hole in the ground that leads to a cave with multiple exits leading deeper. There's stuff moving in the cave, you can't see it because it's too shadowy. There's chittering and scraping noises coming from the cave, and the whole place is creepy.

A Proto-plan to deal with the Minami, feel free to put in other plans/fork it/modify it if needed. Strongly suggest sending Mari for it and deal instead of dealing with Jounins with two Milds and Medium.

[ ] Action Plan: Injury means more Work

  • Let Mari take point, the following are only suggestions, be flexible if needed
  • Minami
    • High OPSEC meeting
    • The Hyuuga-Goketsu deal:
      • Hazou's objectives are unchanged
      • Minami have power, influence and money, their real problem is the Hyuuga.
      • So this deal is your gift to them
      • The Goketsu will always oppose hurting the Minami
        • And the Goketsu now hold a massive economical stake on Hyuuga, one will only grow stronger
        • They will deal in good faith, unless their partners do not behave according to the Will Of Fire
          • One of such behaviour would be trying to exterminate a fellow and loyal Leaf Clan.
    • If Minami fears we will change our words , the Goketsu are willing to go on multiple economic endevours with the Minami to be more tightly bound with them too.
      • Play on Hazou idealism and naivety if needed
    • They won't like it, But it could the different between our children living in happiness, or watching their backs for assassins
      • This gives the Minami a way to try without risk, a betrayal will burn Goketsu.
    • (Against the fact we're paying the Hyuuga) The Byakugan powers makes their recovery a question of "when", not "if". Better for us to be involved then.
    • (Why Hazou isn't there) Hazou is hurt, but more importantly, you feel discretion is needed in certain matters.

No part of this mission plays to Ino's strengths at all, and I don't want her to die.
I do want to run missions with her, but this is a bad opportunity for it.

Including Lee means either breaking MARS/Vampiric Dew OpSec or endangering ourselves by holding back our best tools.

(Non-central bonus objections: He can't participate in SC-based approaches, and his personality may clash with the "go slow and clear everything with kagome-level caution" approach. He doesn't offer much that an extra Mari clone wouldn't provide)
But Ino, but Lee :(
Fine, fine. Your objections make sense, I'll remove that line.

To be honest, Lee feels kind of a non-character to me. Every single interaction we've had with him was a mix of YOUTH! and innuendos to the point where pretty much zero constructive conversation has happened on screen. And the one time we had a theology discussion with him it was simultaneously both fruitless and off screen. I care more about random unnamed civilians that have appeared once than I do about him.

It was visible from Leaf so....
I would suggest that was simply because of the magnitude of the EM nuke effect - it caused what was effectively a blizzard across many square miles and would have had enormous atmospheric effects especially in the column of air directly above the EM cast (because the air above would be falling down as the air at the base was compressed into liquid).

You don't have to suggest, you know; you can just declare it so.

I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable doing that. Instead I'll quote this -

Miles away, the thunder clouds were dipping downwards, reaching out to the beckoning earth like a child reaching for its mother...except this child was made of cubic miles of angry grey clouds among which danced eye-searing lightning.

The clouds moved slowly at first, stretching themselves with lazy comfort. Then they reached a specific point and something greedy and huge and invisible inhaled, tearing the clouds from the sky and into its eldritch lungs.

There's also the fact that EM Nuke was nerfed by the QMs in subsequent castings, so that first one can be as large/small as it needs to be, without impacting the narrative going forward.

Hazō, Mari, and Naruto SCs to investigate that the failure is not continuing to get worse.
I don't think we should request Naruto SCs until we've scouted first. If our SCs are dying and we can't get a good picture of the scene. Then sure. But Naruto is not at our beck and call.
Asuma, Mari, Kagome meeting.
Can you just move the latter section about this meeting up and get rid of this bullet point? That way the plan makes more chronological sense.
Asuma, Mari, Kagome
  • Inform of sealing failure.
  • Cave system discovered just outside Leaf.
  • Extent is unknown, could lead into the city.
  • If situation is out of control, request assistance in clearing the cave.
    • ANBU/jonin strike force, authorizing Zoo rush, mobilizing Leaf S-rankers
Why is Mari here? What does she contribute to this meeting?

Sealing Research for Chapter 612

Timeline:

  • Prime: Days 1-8 prep on Reusable Rocket Boots, Day 9 attempt
  • SC: Days 1-8 prep on Rift Seal 0, Day 9 attempt
  • SC: Days 1-2 on Substitution Seal, Days 3-8 prep on Fourfold Seal of Preservation prep, Day 9 attempt
    • Delaying roll on Fourfold Seal of Preservation to maximize odds of having access to Dampeners
  • SC: Dampener (1-6), then Electrocution (7-8)

Substitution Seal:

Hazō (Sealing): 50 + 0 = 50
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 - 3 = 39

Hazō (Sealing): 50 + 0 = 50
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 + 3 = 45

Hazō thinks he's about a quarter of the way done with this seal. It's not particularly challenging, just seems like it might take longer than usual for a genin-level seal.

Dampener:

Hazō (Sealing): 50 + 6 = 56
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 + 3 = 45

Hazō (Sealing): 50 - 3 = 47
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 - 3 = 39

Hazō (Sealing): 50 + 3 = 53
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 - 9 = 33
Ordinarily this would be rerolled, but Hazō is pretty confident that this is quite easy after a couple rolls, so he will forgo rerolling.

Hazō (Sealing): 50 + 0 = 50
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 - 3 = 39

Hazō (Sealing): 50 + 0 = 50
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 - 3 = 39
NB: Not a copy+paste error, just the same rolls twice.

Hazō (Sealing): 50 + 0 = 50
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 + 0 = 42

Easy peasy. Hazō finishes the Dampener on Day 6. On Day 7, Hazō spends a clone block scribing ~36 of them, then all Day 8+ attempts get the benefit of the Dampener seal. Tentative mechanics: lasts ~1 hour, gives a +3 bonus to Calligraphy. Can give +3 to MedKnow in certain contexts (e.g. surgeries).

Electrocution Seal:

Hazō (Sealing): 50 + 6 = 56
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 - 6 = 36

Hazō (Sealing): 50 - 3 = 47
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 + 3 (Dampener) + 3 = 48

Hazō finishes the Electrocution seal! Tentative mechanics: when attached to a target, activating the seal creates the Aspect "Electrified!" on that target, on which the user gets a tag.

Reusable Rocket Boots:

Hazō does a prep day and predictably finds that the TN is "Jiraiya". He'll use full prep – but due to FP spent on the Toad Sages conversation and surviving the sealing failure backlash, he cannot invoke here, as he needs to save an FP for rerolls (-12s on a seal this dangerous could be catastrophic).

Hazō (Sealing): 50 + 24 (SSA) + 16 (full prep) + 9 = 99
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 + 3 (IN) + 16 (full prep) + 3 (Dampener) - 3 = 61

At last, a seal that actually challenges Hazō. He thinks he made minor progress, and that he would progress much faster if he had FP to spend on sealing research. He thinks that finishing his seal will remove stagnancy after so long working on relatively easy projects.

Rift Seal 0:

So named due to the fact that it will be the root of all future necromantic rift sealing, as a basic seal that does nothing but create a chakra construct attached to the O'uzu rift. Hazō does a prep day and predictably finds that the TN is "jōnin". He'll use full prep, but cannot invoke as he wants to save an FP for rerolls. Luckily, Kagome can invoke to provide a bonus.

Hazō (Sealing): 50 + 24 (SSA) + 16 (full prep) + ? (Kagome) - 3 = 87 + ?
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 + 16 (full prep) + 3 (Dampener) - 3 = 58

This is probably the most challenging seal that Hazō has ever worked on (at least, until he merges with Prime and remembers working on RRB later tonight). However, that doesn't say much. He could probably make faster progress on this seal without prep, if it weren't for the fact that the Calligraphy components are actually fairly tough.

Hazō thinks he's about a quarter of the way done.

Fourfold Seal of Preservation:

Hazō (Sealing): 50 + 12 (full prep) - 9 = 53
Hazō spends a FP to reroll! Hazō is out of FP!
Hazō (Sealing): 50 + 12 (full prep) - 6 = 56
Hazō (Calligraphy): 42 + 12 (full prep) + 3 (Dampener) + 6 = 63

Sealing failure! (rolls regarding the sealing failure included in the update)

Finally, given the circumstances, Hazō needs to make a clone sickness check. The relevant clone is the other long clone (the other two long clones, working on Rift Seal 0 and the Fourfold Seal of Preservation, already popped in the update), which was working on SC training, Asuma's lesson-reflections, and notes reading. Thankfully, this is happening on a day with safety margins for SSA research, so Hazō is only running 14 clone blocks, or 42 clone-hours.

After the chapter ends, Hazō spends a few minutes centering himself and clearing the extant mental stress, then remotely pops the remaining clone. He is attacked by SC backlash at strength 62. He will roll with level 56. On a -9 or worse, Hazō will take a Severe Consequence, and he will be unable to reroll.

Hazō (Resolve): 62 - 4 (SSA Mild) - 4 (SSA Mild) - 7 (Medium from the sealing failure) + 9 (SC bonus) + 9 = 65

Hazō not only survives the clone backlash, but somehow doesn't take any additional mental stress from it! He can fully focus on dealing with the new sealing failure.

Given that we worked on multiple very difficult seals (one of which was so hard that we failed it), may we consider ourselves to be unstagnated in Sealing?

lmao

Attend religious ceremonies/services regularly. Are any Hagoromo positively inclined towards Hazo?
@eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped can we assume Hazou will now do this without further intervention?
Sure, Hazō will occasionally go to religious services. This seems to immediately improve the attitude of many Hagoromo towards Hazō.

@eaglejarl @Paperclipped @Velorien

A couple questions:

1) Does Hazou have any clone hours left for the day?

2) Is his Medium Consequence caused by SSA? That is, can he do sealing research while it heals?

No.
No, it is not caused by SSA. He can do sealing research while it heals.

@Paperclipped @eaglejarl @Velorien
Before we go dungeon delving is there any chance we can have those Tower Earth/Water Jutsu available for Hazō & Noburi?
They'll be ready when they're ready.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped

In Hazou's sheet, the recent FP purchase should be -5 XP, not -10, as it was from the Ninjutsu Audit, which gave us a better deal on that.
Nope, this purchase was in the plan, made with normal XP.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped The recent Action Plan had us ask Mari and Kei if they could handle Mio on their own. Can they?
Yes, they can handle it.

Oh, was this a WoG statement and not Hazou's best guess? My mistake then, I'd assumed the actual number was vastly higher given Kakuzu's estimate of how populated the Land of Fire actually is.
*grumble, grumble*

Given that we worked on multiple very difficult seals (one of which was so hard that we failed it), may we consider ourselves to be unstagnated in Sealing?
Hazō thinks that he will be fully unstagnated when he finishes the RRB (Reusable Rocket Boots) seal.

@eaglejarl Has MARI noticed any discrepancies in the reported population of Fire? They've been giving villages an awful lot of attention, and it also stands to reason that as they immensely raise the quality of life in "known" settlements they'll start seeing more immigration from their unrecorded peers.

Additionally, has there been any effect from the Team Akane Seal Bank yet? Some additional retention in the genin ranks, perhaps.

We should set up a SOP that if we're worried about getting killed or maybe even Severe'd by clone backlash, we get Mari and put Hazou Prime in TLitF before dispelling. If Hazou fails the roll, she activates the memory-erasure function and restores Hazou from a backup (surely a couple of minor emotional attachments are less important than Hazou's life). If he passes, she just drops TLitF without using the active function.

Hey, it worked for the cannibal seal.

I would really rather not put Mari in a position where we ask her to use TLitF. We can deal with a Medium if it means she gets to keep her memories.
