Easy to cut content to slap this on a two scene plan. Or attach to a finish necromancy seals timeskip when crises are out of the way.
  • To Kei, Snowflake and Kagome.
    • Demonstrate densified corundum cannons.
      • Use clones.
      • Set up targets.
    • Load with metal scraps, log of densified corundum.
    • Five seal barrier to protect cannon for first volleys. Then without to see if cannon shatters.
      • Use MARS explosive seals or Kagome's choice.
    • Repeat with a second cannon.
      • ARSed rocket boot seal shaped into center of corundum log for propulsion.
        • Must be log or propulsion will change direction as ball spins.
    • Kei and Snowflake try out diamond tipped corundum kunai with ARSed rocket boot seal shaped inside.
      • Seal points forward, kunai goes fast. Seal points up, kunai changes direction.
    • Ready corundum planks for small round of tests.
      • Take their feedback. Scale down to handheld?
      • What do they think of the demonstration?
      • Good use of time to develop further? Will they work with us?
        • High speed! How far could shots go without losing accuracy?
        • Deadly seal delivery system.
        • Scary what might be possible with scopes + night vision.
        • Kei can make 50 SC for volleys.
          • Add Mari's SC and genjutsu follow up.
        • Kill sleeping S-rankers?
          • Ambush Dragons without Conclave help.
          • Akatsuki are lone roamers.
            • Track them from AMITY assemblies. Kill softer targets, use proof to recruit Sand, Mist to crack tough nuts.
            • Secures afterlife portal.
        • Steel is better but faster R&D speed with corundum.

You need to explain how cannons are supposed to work, because Hazou does not know. You can't just skip to showing off something he has no idea of.

Omake for the omake pile: Leaf Medical Drama. Feature: Noburi, the rising star of the Hospital. Antagonists: medic nin who disgrace their career with their attitudes towards civilians.

There is something stuck in there. Did Noburi stick in a raisin? Blow hard. Fwoop, it goes shooting out. Huh. What if you did that bigger and faster? Lament weaponizing everything you touch.
Not reaching the speeds you want it to reach. What other ways are there to shoot something quickly? Explosives send out strong shock waves and rocket boots slowly shoot humans. What if you guided the strength of an explosion to push a kunai or put rocket boots in a kunai? How would you guide it? Shut off every direction it can go except one until it reaches a speed too fast to miss the target. Kagome set up a column of force walls to shape a blast in Bonfire of Tapirs.
Make a field of holes with different traps in them. Check a trap with explosives and scrap inside. What if you pulled the pit out of the ground so it could be aimed? Dirt walls are too weak. What about corundum?
Find an abandoned well. Shore the walls with corundum to resist damage. Drop explosives inside. More fun when something gets blasted. Drop in scrap. Fwoop! What if you shrunk and pulled the well out of the ground so it could be aimed? Change your name to Lassie.

I wonder if Shikamaru now thinks Hazou's "do the thing" ability is similar to the Frozen Skein, but connected to Jashin instead of the Mori Voice? Hazou has a trend towards creating WMDs, can think of massively deadly plans in the span of a heartbeat, and has a proven track record of being bad a social skills, for all his grand speeches. And the Mori Voice doesn't work on socials, either. And Jashin has (debatably) altered probability around Hazou before.

I wonder if Shika will offer Hazou some of that Forbidden Five Lore, the way he offered it to Kei?

Little would he know that the truth is far worse.

Ehhh I'm really not convinced this would work. The way explosive seals work and their function are not well defined, to prevent the players munchkining the hell out of them. That means we don't know exactly how they work.

The reason actual cannon can propel projectiles is because of a chemical reaction that generates gas molecules. The expansion of those gas molecules in a confined barrel accelerates the projectile. No gas, no propulsion. Thermite reactions produce lots of energy, but you can't use a thermite as a propellant mixture because they don't make gas.

If the way explosives actually work involves no gas-production (and I think this very likely) they will make very bad propellants. There will still be some pressure increase from the shock wave, and heating the barrel, and you might be able to get some acceleration, but it's going to be pretty bad, as these things go.

Bad enough that I would expect your well test to just flat not work.

Yeah, we gotta vote all that in to happen.

I'm not comfortable havinging the Shikamaru part without more time for feedback (@Left-Hand Mutant, mind working on that with me next voting cycle? You had some good ideas)
It's a date!

SV-kun is Jashin?

Spoilers separated because any one of them alone should be enough. Explosive seals are weird, but cannons are transitory. They only need to be good enough to flip Kagome's switch to work on rifles. Trust explosives to the expert. No objection to rocket boot cannons? Want to push this to the background soon enough Kei and Mari have time to qualify for mechanics of using rifles.

Over all, are you convinced? Probably giving up on this soon. Rifles have my vote. Not going to fight against the consensus.
Yeah, we gotta vote all that in to happen.
Is this a voice of assent? Not all of it. Choose one, mix and match or trounce my feeble imagination. Cannons are easy. Good metal and propellant is hard.

I don't get your "cannons are transitory" comment. Rifles suffer from the exact same propellent problem, while also blowing up in the hand much more readily.

We have no way of making rocket boot cannons. The current seal needs CA to activate. We would need to research a variant with traditional activation. Assuming ARS doesn't work on CA activated seals ofc. Which makes sense to me but might not be the case.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped, does ARS (and MARS) work on chakra adhesion activated seals?

If we can get thruster seals (since they aren't boots anymore) to work, we don't need a barrel. The force of the thruster is applied directly to the object in question. There's no point in confining it to a barrel.

The problem does not exist after Kagome researches new seals. First he has to believe in the cause. Save human hands. Use earth clones.

Rocket boots are lower impulse Directional Explosives. Kagome used them to chop logs. Directional Explosives do not use CA activation. Barrels are good opsec. Still need a snubnose to aim the payload.

Have a harder time thinking about thrusters than barrels. What next if we are confirmed to have thrusters?

Building on this, what if the Sage wasn't able to seal Jashin away, like was able to do with the Mori Voice and the other Four? Or what if Jashin is new, an Outer God who stumbled upon a vulnerable Elemental Nations with no other Outer Beings plaguing it? So Jashin, with no competition, gets free reign of the place?

Seems plausible, and matches what we know.

On a much more trivial note: Hey, I bet we can finally make sunglasses!

Even better: Make strobeing flash bomb seals in a limited colour(green?), and gemstone sunglasses that filter that wavelength (rubies?).

I just really want to make microscopes. Actually, I want to give one to Noburi as a gift. His reaction would be fun to see. Barring that, magnifying glasses would be cool too.

Would he even know what it is? They don't really look for bacteria or anything, they work on a 'spirits' system.
I think Tsunade, Oro, Kabuto, and Aburame would be right on the cusp of conceiving a tool like microscopes. With Noburi spending so much time around the Oro, Tsunade, and Kabuto, I think he'd have a vague idea.

I highly doubt we can make something powerful enough to discover germs though. I'm thinking of something that's a lot more low power. It would be more useful for examining patient injuries or helping Nobby refine his ability with a scalpel.

I'd love it if the tool could give caligraphy a boost as well.

Did Asuma ever get back to us on the topic of recruiting Akatsuki to help with the dragons?

Want to get that straightened out before we get pulled into the Hidan's arrival, so we have more things to distract him from killing us and everyone we love with.

Chapter 596: A Gem of a Woman, Part 2

"You're saying you made this gem? Just for me?" Ino gasped.

"Got it in one." Hazō grinned. Birthday gifting win! He was the best boyfriend ever.

"How?"

Hazō took a breath and let it out slowly. In one sense, this was a small thing; it wouldn't destroy the Gōketsu if the secret of Earthshaping's more potent abilities got out. On the other hand, it would cost them a lot of money if the other clans learned about it and claim-jumped the Gōketsu monopoly. It would take a few months for anyone to get skilled enough with Earthshaping to be able to produce gems and the Gōketsu could use their unlimited supply during that time to make an egregious amount of money. On the other hand, if they could hold onto the secret for a couple of years they could make obscene amounts of money.

Of course, that was the entire point.

He didn't actually feel great about this part, but Mari had argued until he accepted it. This was a test; if Ino could hold onto a Gōketsu secret without leaking it or taking advantage of it, that was important information to have.

"Of course, just because she doesn't share it doesn't means she's trustworthy," Mari said with a grin. "Could just mean that she's smart enough to identify the test."

Hazō groaned. Dueling social specs were all well and good, but couldn't they leave him out of it? Go play your games on your own, ladies.

Not being an idiot, he didn't say that aloud.

"It's a secret," he said. "Not an official clan secret, just a secret. I'm sharing with you the fact that it exists, but please keep it under wraps. Move investments around if you need to, but be subtle about it. No one outside Gōketsu knows we can do this—well, except Asuma. If you take losses, we'll make it up to you."

Ino kept staring. "You can make gems. You can make new gems. You can make new gems easily enough to just give them away as gifts. Hazō, this is huge. Do you realise what this can do to the entire jewelery trade? To the economy?"

He nodded. "Yup. I do. Asuma is helping me sell the gems and manage the process so it doesn't harm Leaf. The Gōketsu are going to get ridiculously wealthy off of this and, if possible, we're going to make sure that Rock takes it in the teeth."

She nodded thoughtfully. "That shouldn't be hard. A lot of the biggest gem mines are in Earth Country."

"Sure," Hazō said. "But that's not the important part about this gift." He held out his hand for the mirror.

Pale eyebrows went up, but she handed it over. "Oh?"

"Do you remember when you told me that you felt like you were trying to put a broken mirror back together?"

Her face fell at the reminder of that occasion. "Sure."

He turned the mirror over in his hands, studying it thoughtfully. "This mirror is symbolic on several levels. I'm giving you not just the mirror but also the secret of its creation, because I love you and trust you, so in the larger sense it's a gift from the Gōketsu to the Yamanaka. In the more personal sense..." He smashed the face of the mirror against the corner of the table, hard. It bounced back, leaving a dent in the heavy wood and not a trace on the corundum mirror.

"This mirror won't break, no matter what," he said, offering it back to her. "Just like its owner."

She stared at him, eyes welling up, and then snatched the mirror away and pushed it aside so that she could swarm into his lap and hug him tight.

Best. Boyfriend. Ever.

He held her and stroked her back while she clutched at him. Flyaway strands of hair were tickling his nose exactly the way Akane's used to when he held her, which was not the right thought to be having while hugging his other girlfriend, and his own eyes were starting to well, which made him clutch tighter to her in turn.

It took him several seconds to realize how tight he was hugging; when he did, his arms sprang open until she made a reproving noise. He chuckled and resumed stroking her back while she rubbed her cheek on his neck.

"Thanks," she said, drawing back at last. She wiped the mist from her eyes (taking care not to smudge her makeup) and took her own seat again. She kept his hand in hers, refusing to entirely break their connection.

"Speaking of terrible segues," Hazō said, "I was hoping you could advise me on something."

"You're right, that was a terrible segue," she said, smiling. "What do you need?"

"I'm meeting with Hinata regarding the Hyūga luxury goods connections," he said. "Shino will be facilitating, but I still want to make a good impression. You grew up with her and went to the Academy with her. Any advice?"

She thought about it. "She's a nice girl, and honest when she can be, but she's happy to lie when the situation calls for it, so don't let those innocent white eyes fool you." She snorted. "She has a wicked sense of humor too, although you'd barely know it. One time, at ninja camp..."

Author's Note: It was a weird day and I didn't make it through the plan. I'm putting this up now and I'll do the other two scenes tomorrow as chapter 597. XP etc will come out then.

Yay, boyfriend points! Spending one fate point for however many boyfriend points we got is likely to be worth it. I think if we get enough boyfriend points we unlock the 'convince Ino to commit treason' dialogue options.

I mean, depends on the scale of the treason.
She will probably go along whit the small stuff like espionage for just a few points, but some stuff need a lot and honestly we could need them if we chose to play hard mode and get married.
Marriage is no guarantee and might work against us. A ceremony and paperwork do not guarantee ideological consistency.
