[x] Action Plan: Lightcone-Ending OPSEC Incident, Narrowly Avoided

Sure.

Edit: Also a good idea to link to Inferno Vulpix's Clear Research no Jutsu.
Done to the first, not sure where the link is. Is it this?
Have another abomination-plan.

[X] Action Plan: Lightcone Prevention
Word Count: 395

Discuss with Mari and Noburi beforehand, in utmost security (in the wilderness, Tunneling Exavaction-ed underground beyond Byakugan range, Air Domes, security jutsu from Mari??).
  • Explain the details of Shadow Clone, and our guesstimates.
    • We suspect that with enough chakra to summon ~30 clones daily and years of training to handle clone sickness, learning speed could be quadrupled.
      • Rough analogy: If Hazou had Jiraiya's talent, he could catch up within a decade.
      • Thanks to Noburi, we'll soon have this. Within a decade, we'll all hit S-rank.
      • This is our path to broadly fix the world within our lifetime.
    • But there are people who could abuse this harder.
      • Orochimaru's already S-rank and has access to exotic abilities that could offset clone sickness. All he'd need is a Wakahisa to attain godhood.
      • Ami's also in this position should she learn SC. How likely is this?
      • Clans in general, due to sheer numbers.
        • They may not have chakra transfer, but Hazou imagines Noburi would be pressured to provide services.
    • This is clearly a need-to-know secret even within the clan, for now.
      • We believe chakra transfer and SC haven't interacted before, and SC-users consider it a weapon instead of a training tool, so this may not have been discovered yet. How do we keep it this way, now that Leaf has VD?
        • Should we spread subtle disinformation about VD?
        • Plant evidence suggesting it's bad at interfacing with certain chakra constructs?
  • Handle Ebisu's concerns on Honoka.
    • Search Leaf General Hospital's archives for evidence of Ebisu's claims.
      • Get details/numbers of crippled kids.
      • Talk to survivors and get their stories.
      • Follow-up on other leads.
    • Talk with Kagome. Bring Mari and Noburi.
      • Explain Ebisu's concerns and suggestions.
      • Show him our collected evidence. Offer to arrange meetings with survivors.
      • Ask Kagome how he wants to proceed.
        • Make sure he won't harming Ebisu.
        • We do believe Honoka's fine. Ebisu thinks overexertion was the cause, but Kagome'd never do that to Honoka.
        • OTOH, Ebisu doesn't think Kagome can change his mind. Leaf holds his teaching skills in high regard, which may impact Kagome's desire for education reform.
Separately, discuss your quarantine with Mari and Kagome.
  • It's been a month, you've been fairly active, and there haven't been any incidents.
  • Do they think it's sufficient to be cleared?
Misc.:
  • Use the scientific method and work with Kunihiro to isolate important factors in research.
  • Perform Ami-style training daily.

Ami Stye Training isn't going to work without actively being curated. We kept getting 0 XP. Below, I removed the first bullet since we already did that earned 0 XP.

  1. Spar with Lee while upside down on the ceiling/on a tree/underwater/running.
  2. Spar with Lee in an open training field with 20-30 logs, placed upright. Ground is lava: move between the logs only.
    • Vary strategies: chakra-adhering to a single log; destroying logs; jumping between sides of logs...
  3. Create a civilian fanclub for a randomly selected ninja.
  4. Get five people to owe you favours without spending significant resources.
  5. Hold a ten minute conversation with Anko without displaying any outward signs of loss of composure.
  6. Try to move back and forth a long hallway by chakra adhering your head to the ceiling and shifting your weight.
  7. Play an instrument by using chakra adhesion to pluck the strings.
  8. Cross the city via sequential stalking. You can only change targets when your current target interacts with the potential new target.
  9. Have a spar where your opponent is allowed to call out one limb you can't use, which they can swap at will.
  10. Convince someone that you are Rock Lee.

Happy birthday, @Velorien!
I'm assuming that the line about Mari learning TH is to complement the second line (i.e. 'Mari would you be willing to find a way to make a version of SC Noburi can use?') but right now the connection looks ambiguous to me. At worst, Hazou might just spring that question with minimal context and confuse Mari with a non-sequiter.
They're connected, but not strongly. Clarified:
[x] Action Plan: Lightcone-Ending OPSEC Incident, Narrowly Avoided
Wordcount: 399
  • Discuss with Mari and Noburi.
    • Maximal security: go into the wilderness, Tunnel Excavation downwards beyond Byakugan's range, then set up an Air Dome.
  • Explain Shadow Clone in detail.
    • This jutsu allowed Naruto to become ridiculously skilled for his age. You think we can replicate this. His unique advantage is effectively unlimited chakra, and we have Noburi. The ability to withstand clone sickness remains an issue, but there are exercises to dramatically improve on it. If one obsessively does them for years...
    • Basically, you suspect that SC could eventually allow one to quadruple their learning speed and training time, in addition to direct multitasking benefits.
    • Optimistically, we'll all hit S-rank in half a decade. We finally have a solid shot at fixing the world within our lifetimes.
  • Unless someone more well-positioned to exploit it outcompetes us. Examples:
    • Orochimaru. Bio-augmentations might allow him to offset clone sickness, and he can kidnap a Wakahisa. Already an immortal S-rank sealmaster, this'll make him a god.
    • Ami, if she somehow learns SC (how likely is it?). She's already extremely competent, and her bloodline-related skills might help with clone sickness. We'd never catch up.
    • Generally, other major clans: they'll amass power faster due to sheer size. They don't have a Noburi, but it's potentially bigger than Skywalkers: you expect we'll be severely pressured to provide services. And if everyone's S-rank, no-one is.
  • It's the most dangerous secret we possess. It shouldn't go beyond the clan, and should stay need-to-know within it.
    • Chakra transfer and SC never met before, and the few who know SC consider it mainly a weapon, so this trick hadn't been discovered.
    • How do we keep it this way? Spread subtle disinformation about VD? Imply it can't interface with certain chakra constructs?
  • Additionally:
    • What needs to happen for Akane, Kagome, Mari to get access to SC?
    • Would Mari be willing to specialize into Technique Hacking, once she has SC? She might enjoy it, and it likely synergises with Sealing well.
      • (Subtext: Productive alternative to retirement, where she doesn't need to manipulate or kill.)
    • Noburi, don't resign yourself to merely being the crucial component behind the clan's meteoric rise to power: we should be able to TH you a usable SC variant eventually.
  • Separately, discuss your quarantine with Mari and Kagome.
    • It's been a month, you've been fairly active, and there haven't been incidents.
    • Do they think it's sufficient to be cleared?

Right, yes. I re-shuffled it, here's the current list:
Once per day, do one:
  1. Get five people to owe you favours without spending significant resources.
  2. Create a civilian fanclub for a randomly selected ninja.
  3. Meditate while chakra-adhering to a running ninja (Lee?).
  4. Play an instrument by using chakra adhesion to pluck the strings.
  5. Draw a map of Leaf from scratch. The map should show all roads and places of interest. (Destroy it afterwards.)
Those seem challenging enough to me. @faflec, please sanity-check that they won't get us killed or something.

I am highly certain that 5 will get us killboxed for giving the appearance of Leaf intelligence for unknown purposes (why are you making information of major Leaf infrastructure/roads??). I'd recommend it be removed. (I think it could be salavageable, but don't know if we have the time to do so. I'm certainly drawing a blank on it)

Beyond that? I think we're good. 1 gave me the heebie-jeebies before I thought it through; I don't think it's an issue as long as Hazou doesn't do anything illegal or goes after halfway-competent social specs (dunno if he will or not), and 2 could be an issue if it's the wrong sort of ninja...Meh. I don't imagine them to go catastrophically wrong, but I could see ways that they could go wrong if we flub our lucky die.

What if we do it in a secure location?

Eh, nevermind, swapped it for "have a spar where your opponent is allowed to call out one limb you can't use, which they can swap at will".

  • 1 could be a "minor" favor, such as lunch or coffee or something
  • 2 could be "derail keiko's fanclub without them knowing"
  • 5 could be "create a deliberately, completely, 100% wrong map of Konoha with absolutely no true information, not even the location of trees and with the vitally important buildings exempt completely" That level of wrong-ness would be safe info-sec wise and a challenging mental exercise

Additionally:

    • (Subtext: Productive alternative to retirement, where she doesn't need to manipulate or kill.)

I would save this for if Mari ever gets bored of her retirement, or expresses dissatisfaction with her retirement. Bringing this up now, while Mari's vulnerable --while she's still considering who she is and who she wants to be --might be too heavy handed. Personally, I think Mari deserves her retirement and this comes across as Hazou trying to "subtly" tempt her out of her retirement. Besides, Mari already feels immense, crushing guilt over twisting other people to her will. How will Mari feel when she literally creates a sophont slave whose only purpose is to do her will and then die?

I'm convinced that part of the reason Asuma taught this to Hazou at all is because Asuma knows that he'd understand the gravity of what the SC does. That Hazou would grasp the sacrifice and horror that happens, and neither misuse it nor disrespect it. Like when Ed and Al use the Philosopher's Stone in FMA. They're grim because they know the cost. And in this case, the cost might break Mari.

I'd save "Consider Teaching Mari the SC" for if she first ever, unprompted, expresses interest in learning it. And even then, only once she knows what the SC technique fully entails. Mari knows Hazou has it. Mari knows Hazou would be willing to teach it to her if she showed even the most idle of desires to learn it. Let's respect her agency enough to not force this on her, or force her out of a comfortable retirement that she so desperately wants.

1. "Too Lazy to Stand": Hazou must go through an entire day either sitting or lying down.
1a. "Too Lazy to Crawl": As above, except that he is also not allowed to move under his own power except by rolling.
2. "Nothing to See Here": Hazou must do creative training in public, without anyone noticing that he is doing anything unusual.
3. "Literal Uplift": Hazou must end each movement no lower than he began it. For example, he cannot go down stairs, nor can he jump to a roof lower than one he is currently on.
4. "Farewell to Arms": Hazou may not use any part of either arm below the elbow for the entire day, except to cast techniques for directly training- or Uplift-related purposes.
4a. "Monopod": As above, except that he also may only use one leg.
5. "House Arrest": Hazou may not be recognized outside the Goketsu estate, except when acting on Asuma's orders. He also may not eat or drink except in Konoha proper.
5a. "Weekend at Hazou's": As above, except that no visitor may realize that Hazou is absent. (Requires clan cooperation.)
6. "Cat-Like Tread": Hazou must continuously make noise (speaking, playing instrument, etc), and not be seen by anyone.
7. "Find the Mole": Identify the ANBU who visited the cafeteria, both with mask on and mask off.
8. "Live to Serve": Each time he has a conversation with someone, Hazou must get and carry out a single minor request.

Map of Leaf is something I imagine all the major villages have. Especially with the Chunnin exams.

I would save this for if Mari ever gets bored of her retirement, or expresses dissatisfaction with her retirement.
But was she ever truly retired? Factually, not technically.

After we were repatriated, there was barely any time before Hiruzen got killed and she was forced to start playing politics to support Jiraiya's reign. After Hana broke her, she spent some time off, which then culminated in her missing the call to go for the Nagi Island, which led to her blaming herself for Jiraiya's death. After that, she had to campaign against Hiashi. After that, she had to stay active to protect our interests against a hostile Hokage. Now, she is the only jounin and the only social specialist in the clan of former missing-nin, in a greatly weakened Leaf probably on the cusp of another war. Her "retirement" became fiction the moment Jiraiya died, and it will stay a fiction until we ride the SC feedback loop to S-rank.

Which will take longer than her reaching Technique Hacking 100. Which is likely to help her mental state instead of worsen it, and which will ensure she won't be sent on any combat/infiltration missions since she'd be too valuable at home.
How will Mari feel when she literally creates a sophont slave whose only purpose is to do her will and then die?
Hmm, that's a valid point. Though I don't think it'd be quite that bad, since the clone would be her and I would argue that re-integration of a fork is not actually death. (Besides, Keiko is also not the stablest of individuals, yet she learned SC and it all went fine. How bad can it be?)

Hazou would be willing to teach it to her, sure, but he can't do that without Asuma's permission unless we're willing to commit treason (which we're not simply willing but desperately eager to do, of course, but that might not be as obvious IC), and getting that is much less trivial. I think mentioning that we'd be interested in getting SC for the entire clan makes sense, and if we're doing that, then specifically excluding her would be even worse.

On the one hand, fair point.

On the other hand, do you think that Mari would not enjoy being able to kill herself repeatedly and still serve the Goketsu interest? :V

Mari retires because she doesn't want to do seduction missions. Making SC doesn't really affect her, nor becoming S-ranker and being sent out to do her village's bidding.

One thing we should check is if any kids have gotten injured if they just operate storage seals. I think the actual injuries have come from more ambitious training that is less supervised
