So, thoughts: what if we trade secrets, instead of directly to assume, to other clans in exchange for other secrets? Say we do it at a bargain; if we trade at 2:1 value with 5 different clans, it's a net positive for everyone. We get more of the rewards, leaf gets more overall value, and each clan we trade with gets to double their own pot except when compared with the other people we are trading with.
Well, we could also do it with clans that don't intend to participate here (because they won't want to give up enough for the prize), and just cash in the 2.5x value ourselves. Less benefit but lower risk.
You know, Akane's Elemental Mastery is already enough to boil water (EM 20 means she can increase the temperature up to 100C)...and steam engines are hella useful...

Would the clans even be willing to do that? I mean, they're kinda suspicious by default and even the idea of "wanna sell secrets for a fuckton of cash" is kinda worrying. A lot of them might decline simply because it seems suspicious, even if they can't discern a trap. And the clans small/minor enough to not really care about the contest --due to a realistic expectation that they wouldn't win --would also likely be the ones to be the most paranoid about the few secrets that they have. The smaller clans will likely jealously guard the few aces that they've managed to squirrel away...

"Water?" Hazō asked tentatively, holding out the canteen as Noburi finished his kata.
"Sure." Noburi took the canteen and splashed some on his sweaty face before pouring half a liter of the rest down his throat. "Aaaah. That's good. Did Akane chill it?"
I know it wasn't super popular last time, but given the political situation, have people shifted their opinion on how plausible scroll-assisted trading would be? It's a small time investment for extremely large economic rewards and a large strengthening of select alliances, and it would be one of the most Uplift things we could do.
I continue to think it's obviously one of the highest value things we could do right now.
I just ran through the calcs with faflec on discord, and we can perhaps get EM nukes functional within two months.
Assuming a generous 4 XP/day and taking Akane's current XP, we can reach about EM 32 in two months, which is a temperature delta of 160 degrees C. We need to hit -195 C, so we need the starting temperature of the air to be about -35 C. How do we do that? Altitude.
According to the chart below (and doing a little conversion), the temperature of the air at the border of the Troposphere and the Stratosphere is about -70 C, and the temperature decreases linearly along the way.
This means that roughly halfway up the troposphere we should be able to hit the appropriate base temperature to let EM 32 liquify the air. How high is that?
Apparently the troposphere varies from 7km at the poles to 20km at the equator. I'm not sure where the EM is latitude-wise but it's probably somewhere in the middle so we can guess that the troposphere is somewhere between 10km and 15km tall, which means that half of the troposphere would be about 5km to 8km high, which is high but I don't think it's unreasonably high.
(Incidentally, if we went to the top of the troposphere and got the extra 35 degrees, we could shave off 7 levels of EM and only need EM 25, but we'd have to go twice as high up)
edit: we'd hit altitude sickness problems after 2.5km but we have Tunneler's Friend so it's okay.
edit2: turns out I forgot to account for the reduction in pressure's effect on the boiling point, and at the top of the troposphere we'd actually need to hit -220 C or so to liquify the air, which means we can theoretically still do this but we'd need to go all the way up to the top of the troposphere with EM 30-32 to make it work.
Before we set the plans for it into motion, we got Word of QM that we wouldn't be dinged by the Grue if we tried. Good job keeping attentive about the risk, though!
Sounds promising, is it clear enough in game that we could present the idea to Asuma as a pitch and a promise of getting it done within 2 months, or is it better to wait until it's been completed?
Hahahahhahhha! Asuma, you are now our second favorite Hokage ever.
So, what do we have on this scale?
Seventh path mail and shipping
interdimensional chakra bucket line
This one is dependent on Noburi, so it might not count. But then again, it allows concentrating a village's worth of chakra into one person, at any range.
Skyslider
Paying civilians for chakra so that ninja can train longer
This one is dependent on Noburi, so it might not count.
EM nuke
Stacked implosion seal? stacking them to two or three should get much better explosives without breaking reality.
Macerator mills?
Jiraiya said that seals could be made to selectively absorb or emit materials. We could make one to process ore, or cotton.
We might be able to process cotton already. Get a macerator powerful enough to break the cotton strands but not the seeds, then run it through a filter. It will probably be very low quality cotton, but it might work.
Force wall plows
5SB basement. It would have stopped the collapse.
Civilian usable seals.
A school for civilians? We could set it up so that all the tower has to do is fund it.

While the project is theoretically possible from the numbers, I doubt we can actually implement it within these two months.
Hazou himself has no more than a hunch about this, signaled to us by an off-hand incompletely voiced idea. He has no reason to expect a high enough level of Elemental Mastery to liquefy air, only a curiosity at the possibility. And he's only got that much because he's open-minded and got nudged in the right direction. Nobody on the face of the earth has any reason to expect this to pan out, including Hazou, and Hazou is one of very few people who would consider it plausible enough to test out.
Even then, however, what do we need to do to pull it off? We need Akane to monofocus on EM for two full months while Shadow Clone is within reach, and then at the very end of those two months we need to Skywalk all the way up to the stratosphere, over a dozen kilometers up into the sky, so that the ambient temperature is low enough that we can liquefy the air. Nothing less will suffice.
A mere hunch that there might be something useful further down the EM path is unlikely enough to sway Akane away from Shadow Clone, perhaps not even enough to sway her away from other parts of her build. Assuming we pull rank or something to force her to monofocus on it, when two months are over and all we have is the air being very cold, it beggars belief to want to push the envelope even more and go kilometers up into the sky to try there.
It's still not impossible. Maybe Hazou inexplicably develops an obsession with the idea and manages to toe the line between pushing the obsession and getting caldera'd. It's not impossible, but I just don't see it happening. Furthermore, the idea is useless until it is demonstrated. As I said above, nobody on the face of the earth has any reason to expect it to work, and so until we liquefy the air in front of them they would only treat our idea as what it is: a wild hunch.
If we present this to Asuma now there's no way he'd accept it on faith. If we drove Hazou to obsession without getting him caldera'd and somehow managed to convince Akane to skywalk up to the stratosphere to test it out and we proved we could liquefy air there, then it's a definite maybe since we still haven't proven it works at ground level and is therefore actually useful.
In short, it's not theoretically impossible to liquefy air with EM within two months, but I wouldn't hold my breath, and I certainly wouldn't ask Asuma to believe we're onto something as valuable as a nuke from just a wild hunch.
Yeah, but the real advantage comes from the fact that once Noburi sends his chakra, he can just refill it from whoever is around. Imagine a summoner deep in hostile territory with tens of thousands of chakra points at their disposal. You could summon dozens or hundreds of creatures, all while staying in a safe location far from the battle.
Naruto learns quick & would be the strongest user. In fact Naruto alone could subjugate the rest of the EN with this. Wouldn't be his element but I don't think that matters.
I'm afraid that I don't often have the time to actually participate properly in the discussion, but I found myself quite intrigued by the latest post and hey, it's Christmas break and I've got an idea that might be useful. Probably not worth one of the prizes in and of itself, but it should be doable with existing tech so it'd be a relatively inexpensive thing to add to the pile.
Namely, could we use 5SB to essentially construct artillery? I must admit that I'm not entirely sure how exactly the limitations of 5SB work, but I think that it might be possible to construct a cylinder with only one open end and still have the nigh-indestructible properties? If so, we drop an explosive or implosive seal (or something else that explodes) in it, set a timer, drop a boulder down the cylinder, and then it should be sent flying.
It would require a bit of set-up, so I don't think that it could work as a combat move, but if we were to attack a fortified position, then being able to bombard enemies after a few minutes of preparation might be useful.
Hazō thought carefully before continuing. "There is a non-Leaf organization that it would be useful to engage with. They have an extremely large amount of potential influence that could significantly advance many of our goals. I believe, however, that contact between the Gōketsu and this organization would be disapproved of by the Hokage. Should I continue with this conversation or would it be better if you could honestly say that I had given no specifics?"
"You wish to contact Akatsuki, you recognize that this would be considered treason and an excuse to execute the entire Gōketsu clan, and therefore you wish to send a message to the Crows and the Sharks—the Summon Clans allied, respectively, with Uchiha Itachi and Hoshigaki Kisame—asking them to have their Summoners contact the Gōketsu as soon as possible. You will then take this to the Hokage, claiming that you had no part in initiating the conversation and are reporting it immediately, as is your duty as loyal Leaf ninja. You will then suggest that Leaf could ally themselves with Akatsuki in order to prevent, or at least influence the outcome of, the upcoming Fourth World War."
Hazō didn't even feel a twinge of surprise. "I have to say, I've missed these conversations," he said with a smile.
Surprisingly, Keiko smiled slightly in response. "I as well. Your thought patterns are refreshingly unpredictable until the conversation actually begins. It is a pleasure and a relief to engage with the Nara, but there is something about the energy of Team Uplift that I still find appealing." She paused. "In small doses."
Hazō chuckled. "Yes, well, let's move expeditiously through this one. In addition to the Crows and the Sharks, I'd also like to send a message to the Mara. Grandmaster F is their Summoner and, given her level of authority in Cloud right now, she might be our best chance to prevent the war. Are you willing to send the messages?"
She glanced at Mari and Noburi. "Has he discussed this with the two of you?"
Mari nodded. "Yes, after Yuno went to bed and before you arrived. Kagome was given the choice to participate or to not have to attempt to conceal dangerous information. He chose to go make explosives."
"I see." She thought for a moment, then turned back to Hazō. "Yes. I am willing to send your messages and will do so as soon as we conclude here. What was your second topic?"
@eaglejarl Can multiple members of the same clan bring in gifts separately? If they do, can they each get a prize if they make it to the top five independently? What happens if a clan member chooses the fourth prize for themselves (as opposed to giving it to their clan head)
Not sure about the first question, but on this second part I feel pretty comfortable declaring that this is not a legally meaningful question as far as Leaf is concerned. If your clan head tells you to do a thing that doesn't contravene the Tower, you gotta.
Wasn't there talk about fertilizer, underground farms, and related agricultural improvements? Being able to mass-produce larger quantities of food year-round would make Leaf self-sufficient and be able to export food far more than normally, if nothing else.
Most of the trouble is going to be making the crops survive since it's winter, sadly; we'd need some form of sunlight + warmth to give the crops the energy they need to grow. Jiraiya had these Daybright seals, which I think mimic photosynthesis sufficiently [citation needed], but unless we want to have Akane spam EM every 3 hours, we need a source of warmth to keep the crops from breaking. Jiraiya's seals probably should have something, and if worst comes to worst we can just use a fire beneath the farm itself to warm the area or something.
