Who cares? All I want to know is how much the renovation is costing us so we can reduce expense!
It's important to know both because it'll let us know how much we got ripped off if that is the case, and what can be considered extraneous and we can stop renovation on to maximize utility while minimizing expenses if we didn't.

Although the answer to that question is probably HDK :V

I imagine if our income stops being able to pay for expenses, the first thing to go will be renovations. That is, whatever it is we're doing that's bringing everything up to code will slow or halt as we cover the mortgage first. So there's a bit of leeway, I think, as long as we're willing to take the hit that those renovations still need to get done.

In practice... we're going to need to reach out to the Toads and/or Snakes and start selling them seals. Keiko doesn't have to be involved in the deals, but I'm not inclined to let her gainsay us shouldering the emotional weight of what it takes to keep this clan solvent.

In two months, which is problematic.

We don't just need money to pay this stupid mortgage, we need money to buy out people for this Hokage vote shit.
Noburi needs 112 more XP to afford the stunt, which is about one month of training. Which means that if we can set up the deal with the Toads soon after Noburi becomes a Summoner we might be able to swing this.

The Kazusa Minori assassination option starts to look more and more appealing, no? We can make all of our Hokage troubles disappear... by spending just one life. It would be so simple.

Do you feel the pull yet?

You're barking up the wrong tree there bud, just let me know the mission success rate and chances of getting found out after and *I* will sign off on it if both fall within acceptable ranges :p

Also, how indebted are we to people? Do we actually have any outstanding debts? There is an obvious solution to our current money issues here, and it's "Find backers among wealthy civilians who also don't want the Hyuuga in charge."

We should burn down half our compound and call it an accident. Not even joking. It'll cut renovation costs in half.

We should clear-cut that patch of forest and sell the wood. We don't even have to be very precise about it if we sell it as raw materials for charcoal.

Edit: "Why is charcoal valuable?", you may ask. It's a military resource, used primarily in the production of iron armor (not relevant) and weapons (super relevant: how many kunai do you think Leaf goes through a year?)

This assumes that the Toads want and have the funds necessary to purchase the seals from us at the same rate as the Pangolins.

Do we know that the toads are interested in buying our stuff or are we just concluding they can because we desperately want all the summon clans to be effectively interchangeable for our purposes when it is beneficial for us?

How could Orochimaru even afford this place if it's this expensive?

This also brings up the worrying implications of what the other clans' finances look like. If it's normal for a clan to spend $400k+ just on their clan compound what else are they spending money on? We even have less expenses than most clans since we have so few members too by comparison.

Assuming that the Hagoromo have normal expenses in addition to their interest for their Hyuuga loans we would have to conservatively expect paying seven figures on recurring costs just to takeover making payments on their loans, let alone buy them outright (our clan costs of $400k plus an assumed $600k for the Hagoromo expenses).

Bribing is going to be difficult to impossible to do on short notice. Mari did give us an idea of how long Hiashi will spend in the hospital completely indisposed so we might have more time than a few days but I wouldn't put it past 2 months, just to be safe.

I find it quite ironic that perhaps the biggest danger to the clan right now is Jiraiya's infinity dollar irresponsible mortgage on Orochimaru's medical-waste horror terror voodoo lab lol

Hazo: Kagome, you have to stop trapping and start selling.
Kagome: But we can't let stinkers in!
Hazo: No, you don't understand. The biggest threat to our clan right now is our fucking mortgage.

PSA:
Clan finances

Note: $1 = 10 ryō, but the following numbers are all given in dollars for simplicity:

You have $100,000 in the clan reserves, plus the $40,000 you earned while gambling in Mist during the Chūnin Exams. Your monthly expenses are $400,000. You will receive one more payment of Pangolin blood money in the amount of $520,000.

Most of the clan's money is physical coins in the clan vault under the house, with a small amount being in the form of open accounts with various businesses (grocery stores, etc) around town, just to simplify shopping.

These numbers are chosen somewhat arbitrarily but we think they are plausible. We don't believe there's been enough information onscreen to come up with more precise numbers, but if anyone wants to do textual analysis to figure it out then we're happy to listen. Note that there is a substantial amount of flex in how much money was coming in and how much was being spent on the search for Naruto, bribes, etc, so we feel justified in moving the "cash in the bank" number around freely and we are inclined to keep the balance at roughly 2-3 months of runway. It's enough that you're not completely screwed by the loss of your only income stream but also not so much that you can afford to sit around.

Keiko's departure
Now that she is married into the Nara clan, Keiko is no longer primarily a Gōketsu in the eyes of Leaf's laws. She will not be living at the compound, although she is likely to come back to visit at least sometimes -- how soon and how often will depend on upcoming events re: the family's reaction to the cessation of the Pangolin deal.

Regardless of what happens, she will not be able to function as Clan Treasurer anymore. When you ask around you will find that Akane and Noburi know absolutely zero about accounting and are terrified of even trying. Mari has enough experience to read a ledger as part of her infiltration training, but definitely not enough to do the job of actually managing accounts. Kagome has no experience at it but is fascinated by the idea and was poring over the books and scratching his head within an hour of Keiko leaving the house. He's going to ask her to give him some lessons as soon as time can be made; he's not averse to the idea of trying the job but he's nervous about whether he can actually do it. You do not know of any civilian accountants, although you could look if you wanted to.

Things that happened offscreen on Sunday and Monday (the wedding was Tuesday)
Noburi found the rules for adoption into a clan. It's pretty straightforward; you just have to file a public statement with the Tower so that it can be recognized to have happened. It's less a question of approval and more a question of that being a good Schelling point for public record keeping. Based on the number of records and the dates on them it's very clear that adoption happens but it's uncommon. Reading between the lines, Noburi suspects that doing it too often will piss off the other clans. After he was done with that he talked to Akane for suggestions on talented clanless ninja who might be good candidates for adoption. He has a list of names to investigate but not nearly enough information to make a recommendation.

Keiko mostly spent her time reading the family ledgers and getting them tidied up to the point where someone who isn't Jiraiya could understand them. When she wasn't doing that or other onscreen stuff she was "training" with Tenten.

Mari was out and about. When asked what she'd been up to she was helpful, responsive, and completely uninformative.

Akane was mostly training, getting her stuff moved, and helping her parents sort out the business plan for the expansion of their family business that will be based on the promised Gōketsu investment money.

Kagome was making seals and improving the defenses when he wasn't at the library or studying the clan finances.
If you've worked any of it out yet, it would be super useful for planning to know about non-pangolin revenue, like what Keiko predicted they can make from selling seals monthly and making small investments. That will change a lot about how much we need to panic to get financial affairs in order.

We don't sell to toads. We keep selling to pangolins

I'm worried that the proud Pangolins are going to have a problem with Keiko suddenly deciding she doesn't want to have anything to do with her former fascist friends. Do we know if she still is planning to stay their summoner even though she knows they're genocidal?

KAGOME: How do I blow up the mortgage?

You use explosives except instead of detonating them you simply hand them intact to the banker until you've given him enough that he considers the debt repaid.

Explosives still solve all problems even if we have to use them in non-combat, actually-exploding-them-ourselves ways.

Sell to the Pangolins (and the Toads) from the Toads

That brings up another issue, without Keiko we have no real way of contacting the Snake Clan until Noburi can safely sign the Toad contract, and who knows what will happen to the scroll after a month has passed. Not to mention that I'm unsure how much our sudden lack of funds will affect our mechant connections, and now we probably have to hold of expansion on Akane's family's business.

Though then again maybe seals and missions will be enough to cover the compound, merchant network, and business expansion until we get a trade going with the Toads which would be great if true. The Snake contract is still an issue, all we can really do is hope bureaucracy and the current political instability is enough of an issue that the clan councils pushes off handing the scroll out until Noburi can talk with the Snakes, though I wouldn't hold my breath.

Hazo and Kaogme will be printing all day. Noburi will have to take mission.

We've still got another shipment of gold coming in that keeps us solvent in the short term, and expansion of Akane's family business is what we should do if we want to increase our income stream. I'm not sure how long it'll take to pay back our investment there, so it may not help us until well after we've either figured out the finances or everything exploded.

Incidentally, I'm wondering how much of our expenses are flexible. The renovations at least seem like the sort of thing we could pause if we really needed to, and if 3/4 of the monthly ryo is renovations then we could make do with leaky roofs and whatnot until we've secured enough income to invest in fixing the compound again. If renovations are only 1/4 of the monthly ryo, though, we can't really afford to not have the full amount of money each month.
