Have a completely non-Ami plan while we hash this out. OTOH, if we don't make a decision re: Ami by the end of the next cycle, I will be annoyed.

[x] Money, Information, Diplomacy
  • Go to matches where appropriate.
  • The trio talk to merchants, figuring out good investments, and then making them.
  • Ask around the merchants and partiers for rumours.
  • Buy the partiers a few rounds and listen to their woes. Cultivating an appearance as non-elitist is important and this could give information on what civilians consider important.
  • Go on the date with Ikeda.
    • Hazou is playing the role of someone who is wary of OPSEC after the recent blunder, but also mildly infatuated with her and so unwilling to cancel on seeing her again. Really, he's mostly just trying to make an amiable contact in another village.
    • Trade (OPSEC-sanitised) stories.
    • Get Jiraiya's advice first. He is the local expert on seduction missions.

I don't feel like this advances as much as @Noumero 's or @Oneiros 's plans do though.

Her analysis was that their sisterly bond would be ruthlessly exploited, and so had to be destroyed in Keiko and every observer's minds. As far as anyone else can know, she no longer thinks of Keiko as a beloved sister. She's a polite acquaintance entitled to empty smiles when they cross paths.
Exploited by her family, right?

If we could keep them unaware of any contact between Ami and Keiko - such as by using us as an intermediary - perhaps that would solve the problem to Ami's satisfaction.

We should also have lunch with Shikamaru and discuss how he would prefer us to increase the amount to which we are in his debt.

...

HAZOU: What? A few hours of time? I mean, if you just want me to try to be clever that works I suppose. With a few hundred hours of time, boy I could do so much to help further your plots your head would spin. Sealmaster.

I feel like this is a poor decision. We got most of a victory from last night; how about we don't go grab defeat from the jaws of victory by going at it again? Like, in terms of paranoia, I think this is not that much less of a risk than Ami (although that's at least partially because there's no planning here) for an immeasurably smaller benefit.

I don't think Ikeda is an important enough contact for this to be worth it even without the other concerns, or at least it's not worth improving her opinion by the amount that this would improve it for the time that it takes, but that's seperate and comes on top.

Her family were listed as immediate examples to illustrate the breadth of the danger, but there's no indication that they were exclusive.

-and the supergenius conspiracy leader kage-level player who actually lives in the family had to manipulate her entire family just to arrange the brief meeting where she burned the relationship. I profoundly doubt that we're going to find a way she hasn't considered to permit them to sneak around under the noses of an entire clan of supergeniuses. Ami didn't decide to tell Keiko, "I still love you and I'll always be your sister, but right now we need to pretend otherwise." She chose to deliberately break her heart and make Keiko herself believe it. In any case, the assurances of Hazou aren't going to be terribly compelling:

Hazou just suffered a breakup with the girlfriend who worshiped his steps and literally owed him her life and family because he's an unobservant blundering buffalo when it comes to social subtleties. He's the idiot who nearly got his entire team killboxed. He's the son of a notorious drunk who went from the chosen heir of the diplomat clan to social pariah over sentiment, then nearly got herself killed and may have blown any chance of a continuing relationship with her son because she couldn't go a single night without assaulting the wife of a foreign head of state in her own home while serving as the official ambassador.

Follow the supergenius's lead on this.

What about if we arranged with Ami for it to seem as if she was smitten with Hazou? That's a reasonable way for her to be around Keiko more often and get messages to her. :p

Same problems as her taking the ambassadorial post. She is going to be under extreme scrutiny by supergeniuses, and she clearly believes that it is important that Keiko herself continue believing the lie. She doubtlessly expects that people will try to exploit their relationship anyway and Keiko's only protection will be sincerely believing that it is over.

The exploitable mistake there is that she's basing her projections of what Keiko can handle based on the Keiko she knew, before she grew vastly in competence and self-confidence, not to mention the ability to resist being manipulated and stand up to people.

The old Keiko couldn't handle the subterfuge, but the current Keiko can. If we update her information she'll be able to make a new, more accurate forecast of risks.

[x] N Minus Ami

It's @Noumero's plan, minus the Ami section.
  • Ask Keiko about Ryugamine:
    • What are his political views?
    • She mentioned he visited her sister, but then stopped. Why?
  • Check the rest of the plan with Jiraiya.
  • Meet with merchant contacts:
    • Prior contacts:
      • Salt/spice merchant, glass blower, and brewer.
      • Bring gifts (e.g., 'excess' storage seals).
        • Don't do if Jiraiya thinks they'll see it as an attempt to buy loyalty.
      • Buy some of their wares.
        • Intent: To later demonstrate them in Leaf, see if that helps facilitate trade.
    • Make new contacts. Compile a notebook.
  • Arrange another meeting with Ikeda.
    • Ask about life in Sand:
      • Her own.
      • Ninja's.
      • Civilians'.
    • Trade story-for-story if necessary.
      • Act: Be a bit too guarded around any operational information, and overly detailed on other topics.
      • No actual OPSEC breaches, obviously.
    • Explain till'n'fills.
      • Easy money for the economy, good practice for new genin, and keep civilians happy.
      • Would they work in Sand? Maybe mention the idea to higher-ups for brownie points?
      • If she seems interested, explain Uplift.
  • Schedule meetings with:
    • The Oyabun. Topics: gambling and interesting books.
      • Send a bottle of wine as a gift.
      • For Jiraiya: Could we ask Yakuza for the Akatsuki book's copy?
    • (Timeline: at other parties' convenience after Keiko's match.)
  • Watch matches. Cheer for ISC.
  • GS OPSEC incident:
    • Ask Jiraiya whether he'll handle it himself from here on out, or whether you should subtly attract some attention to your "OPSEC breach" with Ikeda last night. Act accordingly.
    • If asked directly, always insist on the Kotsuzui-meatshield lie.
    • "Breaking OPSEC with cute Sand Genin" is now officially on the list of "Hazou's fuckups". Act accordingly.

[X] O Minus Ami

It's @Oneiros' plan, minus the Ami section.
  • General
    • Check with Jiraiya
    • No binding commitments on first meeting
  • Merchants
    • Meet with prior contacts
      • specifically: the salt/spice merchant, glass blower and brewer from before.
      • Bring gifts: 'excess' storage seals, perhaps
    • Make other contacts
      • Start compiling a notebook of potential ones.
  • Ikeda
    • Arrange another meeting at her leisure, should she be willing
    • Ask about her experience in Sand
      • Use missing-nin experience as excuse - curiosity about what a normal ninja life is like
      • See what she knows about the civilian experience
    • Trade story for story if necessary, but don't give more than she does
      • DO NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT HOT SPRINGS AND MOUNTAIN AND ENTRY TO LEAF
    • Give a brief explanation of uplift philosophy
      • Casually mention Till-n-fills as a new mission category Leaf's been trying out.
        • Easy money for the economy, good practice for the greener Genin, and it makes the civilians more productive.
      • Maybe float it by your higher-ups for brownie points, perhaps Sand could adopt something similar, who knows?
  • ISC
    • Watch Ino and Shikamaru's match
      • Celebrate as appropriate afterwards should they win.
        • Don't stay out too late though. Tomorrow is showtime.
  • Contingencies
    • Armor
      • Insist on the Kotsuzui explanation at all times.
        • Even if Kotsuzui himself asks.
      • As far as Hazou is concerned "Breaking OPSEC with cute Sand Genin." is now officially on the list of "Hazou's fuck ups."
        • Do not talk about it. It didn't happen.

Ask Keiko about Ryugamine:
  • What are his political views?
  • She mentioned he visited her sister, but then stopped. Why?

It pains me to say it, but I think we should cut this. We have too many scenes as is, and this is material that I feel should be incorporated into a longer conversation. Are we in a hurry here because of the Ami connection? I doubt Keiko can tell us more than we learned from being in Ryugamine's head.

The other plans (including those you voted for) have that too...?
No? They have far more planning than this one does, and if a higher quality. There's a difference between "we are planning to get something out of it, our cost benefit analysis differs from yours but not majorly" and "Let's say the amount plan isn't worth the risk and then do something blatantly less risk worthy." Not only are the plans I voted for getting something more useful out of the Ikeda talk, by my heuristics they also have less risk.

Add in the fact that the plans I voted for are also willing to do the more efficient thing, so it was less weird to see them have the Ikeda thing; In them, it was just a difference of opinion on when the trade off between utility and risk became not worth it, and so I didn't really bother, but the plan in question here ditched the valuable conversation and kept the non valuable one, and then and made it worse than the version of the conversation in the plans I voted for, which was weird enough for me to decide to comment.

I have a similar opinion on @faflec 's plans, which is why I'm not currently approval voting them, but I think the decision to just remove the part they decided wasn't worth it ended up with a better plan than that even if I do think the decision is silly.

Her inner monologue seems to suggest that she is, if anything, overestimating Keiko's growth. She seems to be of the attitude that she had to either break or ascend, and that she didn't break she must have reached her potential.

It was only an Avadakedavra, and the sort of birds that can survive in an ecosystem containing Velorien have evolved to be very good at dodging magical attacks.

I really could go either way on the Ami issue. While I understand why we're not talking about Keiko, considering that's the largest reason for Ami to meet with us and vice versa, taking it out might leave that scene feeling empty.

I agree. We should ask how we can be the best sibling to Keiko possible. And if there's anything we can do to make it possible for Ami to still be present in her life. We could also tell her how far Keiko has come in the last few years, which might help Ami recalculate how well Keiko is able to protect herself from manipulations.

VELORIEN: (checks in on thread)

(Cut to outside VELORIEN's room. Loud cursing causes birds to fly away in a panic.)
That is almost literally what just happened. Except it's nearly midnight here and I don't want my sleep interrupted by the emergency services/police/army/ICBMs/time-travelling assassins, so I'm having to keep it down. Details left to your imagination.
