How about we ask Jiraiya to give us information on our mother's missions away from Mist (e.g., she goes on an escort mission to Hot Springs) and try to contact her then?

Go back to the library and apologise for damaging the books. Offer our services as an assistant for the day to try to make up for it. This will signal maturity and responsibility to the leaf nins, and hopefully the librarian will trust us anywhere near her books at some point in the future.

Bring Kagome, he and the librarian seemed to get on. Maybe a friendly face will help our apology and Jashin knows Kagome could use some more friends, the poor guy.

I was not expecting Kagome to be the bleeding heart in this scene.
 
If Jiraiya's agent can have something drawn on display (fliers? a banner? an art show?) that we could make a picture that mom would recognize be a part of, that should both be safe and also strong evidence that the signal is new and not just a drawing we did long ago that was stolen.

I'm not as certain as lot of people here (and Hazou) seem to be about whether mom actually wants to leave Mist, though. I think we need to make sure that as little as possible, especially of Jiraiya's assets, is put at risk if she decides to try to steal us back to Mist instead.

I think it's important in extreme cases like this to draw out the underlying reasoning behind J givin us favors. They're formalizations of the growing trust/cooperation between us and him, and his way to incentivize us to keep working for him and giving him our all.

To trade favors for mom extraction, Jiraiya's total expected upside from the mission + the extra trust/cooperation it wins him has to be greater than the costs, AND that overall EV has to be greater than that from him saying "sorry, no can do" and giving us other stuff.

The irrational part of me straight up wants to murder Auntie for denying the all important books to us.

We can get through this of course, but goddamn am I getting frustrated/tired of getting book-blocked by everyone, even our own avatar.

Do we need to have better overarching goals when we say 'don't piss off Leaf'? I'm honestly curious.

This completely discounts the geopolitical aspect. We have absolutely no clue whether it's a good or bad idea for Leaf at the political level. There's a huge pile of uncertainty here.

The best way I can see for getting Hana out is the chuunin exams, it's one of the few ways we can expect to get a specific jounin out of Mist. That, of course, requires Hana to have a team. Luckily, she's a jounin, so if we just say 'Chuunin exam' she'll figure it out. She'll probably be able to play it off as a subconscious need for children to replace her lost son.

So, that'll be the message: the song, and the words chuunin exam. From there, it will be much easier to extract her, since once outside of Mist, she can just cut and run.

Now, how to get said message to her...I'm thinking a bird. Konoha has summon-birds right? If not, Jiraiya has our platform seal, he can have someone sneak up high over mist. Once they get close enough, they'll genjutsu/control a bird and send it down and have it repeat the tune, and drop a seal holding a verbal message from us.

Alternatively, if getting a message really is too hard, we use the platform seal, to sneak a nin or 5 over Mist, PMYF down, grab Hana, PMYF up, and GTFO.

Alternatively, we have Jiraiya grab one of his civilian agents, and train him to perfectly recreate the song. Then, once he gets into Mist, have him 'Practice his flute' somewhere Hazou's mom will hear. When she finds the guy, have him chat with her about what it's like being a ninja and sperg about the chuunin exam. Have him talk about how cool it is that ninja get together and fight it out in a different village twice a year. If she asks about the flute, he'll talk about picking it up on the road from a guy.​

I really like this idea, but I have absolutely no clue how reasonable it is.

@eaglejarl, @Velorien: To the best of the team's knowledge
  1. Do we know where/when the next few chuunin exams are being held? (could probably ask Jiraiya)
  2. How straightforward would it be for a jounin like our mom to get a team of genin to train?
  3. Does Inoue think this is a vaguely reasonable way to get a message across?

  2. Wherever the mission is supposed to take place, Hazou waits to meet her.
  3. Hazou himself convinces Hana to come with us as Jiraiya the spy master fakes her death.
I'd have preferred to have hired her ourselves once we were rich enough via the Merchant Empire, but if we want to do it now we can burn a favor or two.

No need to make this overly complicated involving other Mist ninja.

This is assuming that Mist special ops aren't watching her every move, that we can hire Hana directly, etc.
 
Alternate Idea:
  • Get someone to offer a mission to mist that takes Mom out of the country, or at least near the border somewhere.
    • How do we make sure Mom is the one who gets the mission? There's already going to be an increased pallor of suspicion on her.
    • Does mist have measures to make sure the people offering missions are legit?
    • Will we have to kill anyone else who might be on the mission with her?
