Waaaiiit... You have to be attracted to someone to want them to rule you?

[looks at the American election in a whole new light]

*whoosh*

Some people have referred to me simply as "Dictator" so I made a shipping joke.

But if you have to be attracted to someone to want them to rule you... hmmmm...

*Furiously scribbles notes for future applications*

I've got a message from @faflec:

I too would like to apologize for my response to the vote. My comments towards those who voted for the "Acquire a YOUTHSUT" were not appropriate, and while I did not directly attack the GMs for their initial decision to uphold the vote I DO apologize for contributing to the sense of panic/despair before my threadban.

-faflec

They're unable to post it themselves, due to being threadbanned. I'm not normally a fan of people circumventing Staff actions but, in this case, I felt it would be appropriate to convey their apology.

I put it down in the "jutsu-like seals" section as a seal version of doton: corpse soil, as that was what it seemed to me to be.
It really isn't. Corpse Soil is basically Large Area No Sacrifice Edo Tensei, Corpse Clone is basically Permanant Shadow Clone Chakra Batteries Minus Sapience. (Which is not to be confused with stupidity.) They both recycle corpses, but that's about it.

Edit: and please don't make a bloodline list.
I think I should finally address this with CCNJ:
I believe that if the QMs think they should introduce enemies with Bloodlines, they will do so, and that if they think they shouldn't, they wont.
I seriously doubt that they need our input to come up with powerful Bloodlines, and I present as evidence the Phantom Element from @Velorien's Lighting Up The Dark. I suggest that creating the Bloodlines ourselves will give us a major advantage in the form of knowing what to anticipate, and that we can identify or even engineer their weaknesses to our advantage. Finally, I find inventing Bloodlines fun.
I expect that these advantages will outweigh the marginally increased probability of encountering enemy Bloodline users. I would like to hear any counterarguments you can offer.

So I did some thinking about the subject of mechanical benefits for actions and circumstances. The closest thing I could think of in terms of game benefit from getting medical training from leaf would be a perk "Trained in Leaf" or some other title to indicate the expertise present in medical practice from Leaf doctors. There is a game system called Fate which uses story beats and named perks to flesh out what a character can do.

So for example, the next time we run across someone hurt or one of our team gets badly injured the fact that Noburi had trained in Leaf could give him a bonus if the injury is somthing that Leaf would reasonably specialize in treating. He might already have a perk from his bloodline for treating people with chakra exhaustion, due to how Mist treats those of his bloodline.

Updates to WLDNW:
  • Given the team drama / stress levels, have swapped CCnJ with Keiko for deliberate de-stressing.
  • WOULD APPRECIATE INPUT: Am considering including a "tell Keiko Hazou does not feel confident that Wind-weapon techniques are the best thing for her to ask for, only that it was something he hopes she would consider, and that she should of course go with what she feels is best for her reward."
  • Will likely add a "if jumped with what to ask for as a reward" section based on @Twofold's big list, removing the suggestions that are for other people.
[X] Action Plan: Whose Leaf Does Not Wither

Goals
  1. Survive
  2. Stay on Jiraiya / Leaf's good side, including out minders
  3. Maintain cover / don't cause any incidents
  4. Check up on Akane
  5. Agree on rewards
  6. Get to know more about Leaf / our minders
Methods
  1. Greet our escorts less formally - we're glad to meet them, and hope that we can be friends or at least have an enjoyable time together.
    1. If Hazou gets snark for this, point out that as Akane's sensei, it falls to him to keep up the level of youthfulness while she's indisposed.
    2. Throughout the day as we build up rapport:
      1. Build bridges and genuinely try to make friends; get Keiko involved where possible, and Noburi if he is not doing so on his own.
      2. Share Mist and Missing-nin life trivialities, ask about Leaf (e.g. things we do the same, things we do different)
      3. What do ninjas do here to relax? What are their favorite foods? I thought there would be more trees?
  2. Confirm our cover story as well as any disguises we may use. Learn what we are expected to do in Konoha and what we explicitly can and can't do during our stay
    1. Do we need to have any paperwork or identification on us?
    2. Is Keiko clear to interact with summons and/or go to the Summon Realm to conduct business there?
    3. Are there going to be any opportunities for training/sparring?
    4. Specifically, is there a library we're authorized to read at / borrow from? (Assuming Hazou has heard of such a thing)
  3. Go get Noburi's barrel and the supplies to fix it, as Jiraiya instructed
    1. See if we can't find a pack of some kind to disguise it without compromising function, which preferrably doesn't sacrifice aesthetics.
  4. Check on Akane
    1. Do any of our minders know where we could find get-well-soon flowers to bring?
    2. Can we get her some reading material to help pass the time? Engineering stuff, fiction?
      1. If there are issues with us having insufficient authorization to access such material, is there someone else who could do so?
    3. Send (1) and (2) along if we cannot see her in person, and ask when we will be able to visit her.
    4. If we get to visit her, tell her about Jiraya's unilateral decision to reinstate her, and that he didn't throw us out when we brought up our long-term plans
    5. Don't push for a decision about sticking with us
      1. It is a big question, and her recuperation will take time, she has time
      2. Discuss rewards with her (see rewards section)
  5. Leaf tour / sightseeing / leisure time - follow any set itinerary from Team Asuma, or freewheel it if not
    1. Are there any places we should visit as if we were just average tourists?
    2. Is Jiraiya paying for lunch? Hazou is craving ramen.
  6. Once we are back in quarters for the night
    1. Dispel
    2. Hazou should dedicate time to actively de-stressing - meditation, stretching, hot bath
    3. Run through Mari the idea of passing on (via whoever is watching us) a request to J either for a minimally-spied-on place to have sensitive team discussions, or authorization to do so encryptedly (or in genjutsu iff Hazou knows that's a thing)
    4. Noburi presumably gets to work on the barrel
Contingencies
  1. Don't piss off Leaf
    1. Be polite to everyone we meet
    2. Listen to our handlers and follow their (reasonable) instructions to the letter
  2. Try to minimize Kagome's stress level by not making him talk too much / interact with non-teammates if he doesn't feel like it, keeping close-by, encouraging him to eat any of the nice food we get that someone else has already checked for poison (are there chocolatiers in Leaf?)
  3. Safety and Security Rules
    1. Never be in a group of less than two (Except for Mari)
    2. Keep a watch in our rooms even at night
    3. Make sure we all have whatever the local equivalent of white flags are
    4. Try to stay in public areas with a reasonable number of civilians and other ninja
  4. Combat contingencies
    1. White tactics by default
    2. Use any panic buttons Jiraiya has given us (none yet, sounds like)
    3. Try to leave the city or converge on Jiraiya's office to turn ourselves in. Make sure we're doing the equivalent of waving white flags.
  5. Assume we are being spied on at all times by multiple hostile parties
  6. Ask minders / J if we have access to some version of a panic button, whether seal-based or a colored firework or what, in the event of trouble

Basically an extra dice roll?

ANOTHER REQUEST FOR INPUT: What were the arguments for putting 'info on mom' so high in the reward priorities list? I could see getting her out taking precedence over just about everything, but just knowing "she's alive and not a prisonner" doesn't seem to do so much good.

I wanted to bring it up during group discussion to bounce the idea off of others, we really do not have a good idea of what to do about Momma. She is the one with nothing to tie her to Mist, but extracting her would be dangerous and probably costly. I at the very least want to do something to stop her from committing suicide, but I don't know what she wants.

WOULD APPRECIATE INPUT: Am considering including a "tell Keiko Hazou does not feel confident that Wind-weapon techniques are the best thing for her to ask for, only that it was something he hopes she would consider, and that she should of course go with what she feels is best for her reward."
Things which might help Keiko more than wind weapon techniques:
  • Summoning advice/training
  • Things Pangolins want (so she can make contracts easier)
  • Technique hacking instruction
  • A wind technique which makes her faster
  • A wind technique which creates a breeze (because we want to build an airship)

I think we should do this.

I don't see any great reason, but it should be brought up if we have time for discussion. I'd also like to know how much time and patience Jiraiya has for discussing possible rewards with us.

The safest bet in consideration of her life is that we do nothing.

Agree with above commenters we should do this.

I'm pretty sure "value of information" should be said here. No matter what mom's state, there's a high probability she's staying firmly in Mist (because Zabuza, Yagura) and we're leaving her there (because extraction is unlikely to succeed and likely to make us dead), thereby making value of information zero. I also see making inquiries about her wellbeing getting her put under more scrutiny/torture/execution.

Summoning advice/training is both scarce and, on average, valuable, as is working with the toad summoner.

Technique hacking's max level is intelligence * 1, wits * 3, which is both expensive and the same as sealing—meaning that Hazou has already paid the majority of the cost because of his sealing specialization. My understanding, as per the character sheet, is that Hazou is our best candidate for technique hacking. We perhaps risk him being good at R&D at the cost of being effective in the field. Still think the specialization/gains-from-trade argument strongly favors Hazou and no one else getting into technique hacking.

Wind techniques seem fine, but a lot more people can teach us about wind techniques than can teach us about summoning. If we can get our hands on chakra blades, this changes the calculus wrt Asuma's training somewhat.

----

A broader point: knowing the next quest we go on has a large value of information, since it would inform where we spend our reward and xp. If it would cost us little to nothing to ask Jiraiya if he has any missions planned for us before we commit our rewards and xp, I advocate doing so.

Have we considered possibly asking Big J what he thinks we should ask for? It worked out pretty well for Keiko last time.

She asked for advice on how she should get stronger, not what she should ask him for. He was only impressed last time, and we're probably not gonna get a favor that massive ever again.

If we asked him what to ask for, he'd just shoot us an incredibly disappointed look.

If we can get our hands on chakra blades, this changes the calculus wrt Asuma's training somewhat.

"Hazō, given your background, your ignorance is understandable, but chakra blades are not commonly available. The materials and craftsmanship are extremely rare, and chakra blades are considered clan treasures, to be passed down from master to apprentice, or perhaps bestowed as a reward for an act of great service to the clan. Most chakra blades not in the possession of a noble clan are ones which were at some point looted from the body of a previous wielder. Few new ones are ever made, and if Jiraiya is resourceful enough to have them crafted for me, such a gift would put me in his debt for years to come.

We aren't going to get chakra blades.

We aren't going to get chakra blades.

We aren't going to get chakra blades without quite some effort, yes. They are, however, sufficiently awesome that it's worth looking into seeing if there's, say, a baddy with chakra blades who Leaf agrees is better off dead. Seems a reasonable thing-to-do if there's nothing obvious to do when we leave Leaf (eg Jiraiya gives us another assignment under pain of pain).

Didn't we want to make the world a better place where wanton murder because someone else has a shiny is not the default action?
