Ebisu shrugged. "I try to maintain a realistic assessment of the world. I'm a mediocre field ninja but the best trainer of my generation. It makes no sense to have a home-front ninja be a Summoner, so that's out. I have more money than I know what to do with—shoot, I give most of it away—so getting debts paid off or taxes refunded isn't really a big deal. I love what I do and I hate dealing with bullshit paperwork, so managing a huge estate or being on the Council or head of a new clan has less than zero interest for me. Beyond that, no single ninja is going to win this on his own when competing against entire clans, so taking the credit myself doesn't matter. I have no need to put something in just to show the Will of Fire; my entire life is the Will of Fire. I set aside personal glory years ago and devoted myself to a life of service; I have achieved riches and respect for that, but not glory. You, on the other hand, desperately need to earn your place in Leaf and the respect of your peers. This will help, and of course I will help you achieve that; you demonstrated the Will of Fire by opening my eyes to a better way to serve."

EBISU: You were right, kid. Here, let's lift up the clanless to become our rightful brothers and sisters in full. Also, your clan is new but earnest, so have this idea for free

HAZOU: Wait, what?

EBISU: Cat got your tongue? Spit it out.

HAZOU: I'm... just not used to being listened to.

EBISU: Must've been a mouthy brat, kid.

HAZOU: *thinks about all of Mari's tutorship*

HAZOU: Once, yeah. Now I can spin it as earnesty.

"The children that I saw fry themselves were typically able to get through six or seven months before the damage became visible. The deaths were usually boys who decided that they were 'too awesome' to listen to the safety precautions put forth by their fuddy-duddy instructors and decided to teach themselves something 'cool' like tree-walking because they 'knew better' about what they could handle. They ended up rupturing their coils and dying. Girls have that problem less often because they tend to listen better. Their issue is typically overtraining and burning their coils. They end up crippled—sometimes paralyzed, sometimes palsied, sometimes brain-burned. Rarely dead, though that's hardly a mercy.

"Based on the little I know about your uncle, I doubt he'll be willing to change his mind until he sees evidence that he's wrong, which basically means until the girl is irreparably harmed. Fine. Maybe he's right about this girl, in which case Leaf will end up with a strong ninja and he can learn the lesson with his next student. Maybe he's wrong and she'll end up crippled, in which case he'll stop assuming he knows better. Risking one child is worth it if it keeps him from damaging others, but I strongly suggest you go back to giving her daily checkups. Under no circumstances should you allow him to take on additional non-graduated ninja students. Ever. If he wants to be able to teach children, have him come to me and I'll talk to him. If I decide that he's actually able to listen then I'll consider teaching him how to do it safely. If he takes on young students other than Yamamoto then I will report him to the Hokage. Understood?"

Okay, funnel funds to have her checked out by some medic nin --good medic nin that don't hate the clanless, like Kabuto or Tsunade, or ones approved by those two --on the daily. Maybe we can talk to Tsunade? She doesn't hate us too much, right? We're trying to spread education and explore new ways of sanitation. All things she's literally made her life's mission. Maybe she's at least willing to hear us out.

A thing to consider: Mist did it this way for years and didn't have the explosive results that Leaf does when they try. Maybe Mist introduces their Academy students to chakra-training in a different way than Leaf does? Mist, for all its savagery under the Third Mizukage, would be practical enough to save their students' lives. I mean, Yugara wasn't Madara-insane, so he'd at least value the Academy students as a resource to cultivate. Maybe a few burnouts, but the fact that Mist had it so well-incorporated into their educational system implies that their introduction to chakra-training was, at least, safer than Leaf's --even if not objectively safe.

"Good morning, Gaku," Hazō said, ducking into his office to find his secretary waiting."

"Good morning, sir," the older man said. "There is tea is in the storage seal. I have your morning briefing."

Hazō dropped into his chair with a sigh and unsealed the tea, pouring for himself and for Gaku. "Hit me."

So my dyslexia turned the first line to: "Good morning, Haru," which threw me for a biiit of a loop.

"Why, Noburi! Are you suggesting that I should authorize a mission to steal clan-secret fish from a very much more-or-less allied nation? I'm shocked. Shocked, I say."

Noburi laughed. "Oh, no sir. I'm sure you would never authorize such a thing. In fact, I'm sure you've never even heard of these fish at all, so how could you authorize it?" He paused for a moment, smiling. "Of course, everyone knows how impetuous Hazō is."

"Indeed," Asuma said, nodding sagely. "Terribly impetuous. Always rushing off, making dramatic speeches and insulting elite jōnin. That young man is wildly out of control. Probably get himself killed some day, but what can one do?" He shook his head in exaggerated sorrow. "It's not like I can keep watch over him every minute."

I like Asuma and Noburi. Asuma is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in this quest, alongside Mari, Yuno, and maybe Ino and Ami --depending on how they're further developed.

I wonder if that's what Asuma thinks of us... Actually, that's probably how the world sees us. As either an impetuous child or a potential Hashirama reborn. If Hazou lives to see jonin, I can expect the other villages to have an unusually large bounty on his head just because of this. Hell, some of the more proactive ones might've already done so.

"Hear me, my clansmen!" Hazō cried, projecting his voice as much as he could. "Hear me, people of the Gōketsu."

Insult the other clans: check
Raise our moral high ground: check
Set ourselves as Tsunade's spiritual successor: check
Set ourselves as Ebisu's spiritual successor: check
Paint target on our backs: double check

Hm... Actually, I think the best way to handle the Honoka thing is to do a bit of research. Ask Ebisu where records on that kind of thing would be held, get permission to look at and share them with Kagome, and point out that X out of every Y ninja whom have gotten that kind of training has died.

Kagome doesn't respond well to arguments from authority, but he does respond well to arguments from logic or numbers.

I'd vote for a plan with this. I'd vote so hard for a plan for this. Maybe Kagome's doing something different --and by Wind and Flame, I hope he is --but the knowledge wouldn't hurt. Whether we spend a fate point for the info or we trust in Asuma, I'd vote for a plan that involves us getting that info.

I'm not against adding it in principle, but I think it works better as a stand alone plan as @Noumero has it. Todoroki can be next time. Plus, @Velorien probably doesn't want a sprawling plan for his birthday.

Good point. It does sound like an interesting conversation anyway.

[x] Action Plan: Lightcone-Ending OPSEC Incident, Narrowly Avoided

*SCREAMING IN KAGOME*

WE'RE ALL GONNA DIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Ahhhhhhh. That's the proper stuff. It's been too long; lately all I've been getting is 'faflec.reaction' and that's unsatisfying.

Umm... Are we sure we aren't coddling our subjects (ninja and civilian alike).

@eaglejarl @Velorien What is the worst crime committed under our care and how did we punish it? What is the most common crime and how do we usually punish those?
Fights, petty theft, a couple of noise complaints, etc. Punishments have been unpleasant chores, restriction to the grounds, and/or forced calisthenics with a ninja drill instructor who has been told to be actively unpleasant.

Hold up a second. @eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail From my understanding Kagome asked Jiraiya to have Ebisu watch his training/progress with Honoka, which seems to include teaching Honoka about chakra manipulation. This was months ago (on November 21), how is it that Jiraiya was able to get Hazou, Noburi, and Keiko training with the man but didn't have anything for Kagome?
...
There are times when you really annoy me, Loremaster.

I dunno. Whatever. Jiraiya had a stroke and forgot about it, or Ebisu wasn't available, or he got hit by a truck or something. Point is, he didn't see Kagome/Honoka.

Mist did it this way for years and didn't have the explosive results that Leaf does when they try.
Actually, Hazō doesn't know what the rate of training accidents was like. The students were mostly in small groups and relatively isolated from one another. Not in a deliberate sense (as far as he knew), simply because they moved as a group and had different schedules in order to share all the facilities.

It occurs to me that the reason Asuma likes us so much is because we kind of proved ourselves publically (in front of him, even) by mouthing off to Zabuza, allowing for such a pleasant turn of events as there was there instead of war breaking out.

Should we spread subtle disinformation about VD? Plant evidence suggesting it's bad at interfacing with certain chakra constructs?

@Velorien hinted that there might be long-term consequences for it. So who knows, maybe Hazou can get a reputation as a Loremaster or as a Prophet on top of being foolish.

Spend a Fatepoint so that Jiraiya included those Academy notes on those students who ruptured their chakra coils.

I added this to my plan, I hope you don't mind.

It occurs to me that the reason Asuma likes us so much is because we kind of proved ourselves publically (in front of him, even) by mouthing off to Zabuza, allowing for such a pleasant turn of events as there was there instead of war breaking out.

I think that he also sees Hazou for the person he is: a hopelessly idealistic young man whose ideals better align with the Leaf's Will of Fire than with Mist's "Duty Prevails" mentality. But yeah, I like Asuma. He's quickly becoming one of my my favorite characters and that's why I'm reluctant to push him on the chakra requirement for the Shadow Clone jutsu.

Bring up using academy dropouts for seal activation
Academy dropouts are either dead or never learned chakra manipulation to begin with, the former requires necromancy (which we don't have) and the latter requires we teach civilians (yes, that is the term for these peoples) chakra manipulation. Which is illegal.

Why can't we just find retired-due-to-crippling-injury ninjas? Surely they could use the supplemental income.

Give me a minute and I'll edit accordingly... As for necromancy, I wouldn't say that we don't have it. I mean, who know what Uncle Oro has up his sleeves?

Orochimaru is not one of us.

Oh, I know. Orochimaru scares the crap out of me, game-wise. He's too strong to resist, too important for the Tower to go against, too apathetic (to us) to sway, and too focused to divert. I'd love to talk to Tsunade and Anko about him to try and flesh him out a little more --he has an attachment to Leaf and to his teammates, at least. Part of why I'm so terrified of him is that we don't understand him. He's a dormant volcano and we're ancient peasants who currently can neither understand him, nor stop him. We're utterly at his mercy indifference.

Edit: Once we have a slow moment, I'll probably write up a plan where Hazou does this --I mean, in spite of all that Orochimaru is rumored to have done, Jiraiya cared for him and Tsunade still does. Why? How? Hazou "Team Uplift" Gōketsu would be thoroughly confused by it.

Let's take her along. She doesn't like sitting doing nothing in Leaf, she'll probably like the opportunity to travel and possibly kill some things.

Also, leaving her in Leaf without Noburi and Akane and Hazou will a) ensure she spends time with Neji, being familiar with no-one else here, b) will serve as a re-enactment of us abandoning her in Isan, ensuring she spends even more time with Neji.

Unless we're willing to hand Isan to the Hyuuga, we must take her along.

Actually, you're right. Yuno is our friend and is lonely. We shouldn't leave her behind. She deserves better than that. Yes, yes, Isan stuff too. But mostly the friendship stuff. Give me a sec and I'll add it in.

Hm, do you think Haru would get along with Yuno? She is a Clan ninja, after a fashion.

Hey, is Haru cleared to know about Isan?

This is the correct play IMHO. Also it might be a good idea to have Yuno become the porcupine summoner. Instead of the narrative of her running away and becoming a traitor be one of failure it could be one of success. She went out into the wilderness and became powerful by allying with the Gōketsu. Give us another leaver there

We could just not take Haru? That'd give him time to get settled in the estate, make sure his family is okay, time to learn the Pangolin techniques and whatnot. Besides, we don't have a character sheet for him yet. I'm also... not his biggest fan. But that's just me. He's remarkably well-written and has a depth of character that's well-above the norm! I'm just... not exactly fond of him. I'd rather take Yuno.

Besides, this plan is to prep for the mission and do some last minute stuff before we dive headlong into danger. We can decide on who to grab (IMO: Akane, Noburi, Yuno, and maybe Keiko, if she can) in the next action plan.

I'm not quite as interested in the lever to manipulate her. But we're her friends and she's lonely. We're her friends and she's hurting. We're her friends and we might become family one day. So Yuno deserves more than what she's getting and we need to fix that.

Edit: I just had a thought. Yuno is MfD's iteration of the small-town girl who fell in love with an Out-of-Towner, who then broke her heart and moved away. Small Town Girl moved to the Big City to escape Small Town Gossip, and ended up stumbling into that same Out-of-Towner who broke her heart.

@1234qwerty, note that you voted for "Lightcone-Ending OPSEC Incident, Narrowly Avoided" instead of "Action Plan: Lightcone-Ending OPSEC Incident, Narrowly Avoided". You probably want to fix that.
Hm, do you think Haru would get along with Yuno?
I think so. They're both dissatisfied with their societies, estranged and wronged by them. Plenty of common ground, unless Haru decides to be an idiot and refuse to see the difference between technically being a clan ninja and actually being a clan ninja.
Hey, is Haru cleared to know about Isan?
Almost certainly not. We're not sure even ISC Clan Heads are cleared.

But can you imagine Azai's face when Yuno the cursed child comes back in personal possession of an artefact equally powerful to the one that used to be their entire village's raison d'être? It'll be absolutely hi-la-ri-ous.

A thought: romance in Isan is a long, drawn out, and highly-formal affair. Noburi's issue is that he's not quite sure if he's ready for something serious (I'm of the opinion that he's also enjoying romantic attention a bit much and relishing in growing out of his baby fat, but I digress) so that might work for him. It might make him more comfortable with the idea of marriage to Yuno --a young woman he already has strong affection for --and Yuno herself might be attracted to the idea of having a proper Isan-style courtship. Something that she thought she might never have. Also the romance might very well be multi-year and multi-stage, allowing both parties to slowly grow more comfortable with each other while also satisfying the QM age-requirement before anything "serious" happens. Because even normal teenage romance is weird and mods are justifiably swift.

The only issues that I see would be making sure that Noburi's going through with the courtship in good faith, and not just doing it to satisfy expectations while fully intending to back out. Also that we'd have to convince Yuno of Noburi's sincerity.

Isn't that the point of asking? Seeing if Asuma thinks it a reasonable prospect. It only requires minimal chakra control training, so just use the parts Leaf knows have been leaked already.

I like Ebisu. I know other people already said it, but he's a good guy and reasonable. I appreciate him.

Noburi has brought you his "Hey, after we hit the shrine, let's go to Mist and steal some koi so that we can have effectively unlimited chakra for always" plan.

I know that's flippant, but that scene was so fun, and that summary phrasing so positive, that I'm Immensely Suspicious.

It would be worth noting at least @eaglejarl that Kagome tried to have Ebisu watch and assess his teaching. I'm fine with it not happening, everyone's been busy and everything, but at the last Kagome did make that effort at some point, for when they eventually talk. And is Honoka still being checked weekly, or did that get put aside because of multiple crisis?

This is the correct play IMHO. Also it might be a good idea to have Yuno become the porcupine summoner. I love that conception, though I'd argue she's down the list after Hazou, Akane, and Haru. Giving Haru a summoning scroll would leave him FLABBERGASTED, and would signal that the Goketsu don't kid around with their adoptees. Plus, he's proto-aura is the howling abyss, so giving him dogs would be thematically appropriate, as would giving him prickly-on-the-outside porcupines.

[x] Action Plan: Lightcone-Ending OPSEC Incident, Narrowly Avoided

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail It would be helpful if you had the time to describe Kagome deploying force walls in camp and what happened when chakra beasts ran into them, with any relevant details about interactions between the wall and seals.

I don't know if this will help at all, but I figured I would give it a shot. Sorry if I'm missing the hint that force walls working like normal walls is a Doylist decision.

Imagine paired seals that summoned a wooden wall. There's nothing special about the wall, except that it is held suspended between the 2 seals. If the wall is damaged enough, it disappears. If the seals are misaligned, it disappears. If 100 kilograms' weight of force act on the wall, it disappears(not counting gravity acting on the wall), but before then any amount of weight is counteracted by the seals.

Now imagine a sturdy, bow-shaped piece of metal, like a harp. The seals are aligned on either end of the harp, the metal stiff enough to keep them aligned even when moved. When the seals are moved, the wooden wall moves with them, as long as the drag from the wind doesn't exceed 100kg of weight. Finally, a person holds the bow, standing on the wooden wall below. They weigh 50kg, so the wall remains still. They brace themselves and stretch up, pushing on the center of the bow with 10kg of force, being pushed back on by the bow for an equal 10kg. Total force on the wall is now 60kg worth, so it remains still relative to the seals. Total force on the bow is 10kg upwards, so it begins to ascend, dragging the wooden wall and person along.

F = MA, so ignoring the weight of the bow and the wall for the sake of this example, 10g = 50A, acceleration equals 2 m/s^2. As long as the person kept stretching, they would continue to accelerate until the force of drag plus 60kg exceeded 100kg, upon which the wall would unceremoniously disappear. It wouldn't happen in this example, but if the speed damaged the wall before the force reached 100kg, it would also disappear. Same for if the speed shook the bow enough to misalign the seals. If force walls don't move when chakra beasts run into them, then as a random example, they're withstanding a good portion of the force of a 100kg beast going at 20m/s. By Kinetic Energy = 0.5 * M * V^2, that's 0.5 * 100 * 20^2 = 20,000N, or 2,000kg worth of force. If they couldn't withstand that, they would need to be braced by being partially buried in dirt or with a 5SB.

I used to think the above example was relevant to how force walls worked, but now I'm confused. I don't know how little of it is applicable or if it was a complete waste of time to read. I'm sorry for bringing this up over and over if everything brought up in this example was already well understood.

Sorry to physics people for butchering of units.
How to set up seals as per Kagome: Find two objects (trees, posts, MEWs, whatever) that are appropriately placed. Place a seal on each one such that the seals are facing one another, correctly oriented, the right distance apart, and very slightly less than 2 meters off the ground. Dig a shallow trench under where the bottom edge will be. Activate. There is now an insanely sharp invisible wall leaning outwards at a moderate angle, with the bottom of the wall in the trench. Throw dirt under it such that the trench is filled in and the bottom of the wall extends a couple inches below the ground. Large varmints that run into it get sliced apart. Small ones run into the wall.

No, your plan with lifting things does not work.

Guys, this isn't complicated. Treat it like a slab of metal that is thin, light, and sharp. It works like that. Lifting it does not make you fly, pushing on it does not make you turn into a chicken or whatever weird trick y'all seem to think it will do. Why don't the seals tear when the wall gets punched? I dunno. Chakra be weird, yo. Can you deliberately destroy the seals while the wall is active? Yes. Why? I dunno, chakra be weird, yo.

You're not going to be able to physics the wall into a flying machine by any means that wouldn't work with a slab of metal. Use it as part of a hot air balloon? In and of itself, sure, although I don't believe it's possible to seal the edges such that they are airtight, so you'll need something incredibly convincing and honestly I think it's a waste of time. Still, if you think that's the best use of your balloon-designing efforts, go for it. Personally, I'd just find a good source of fabric.

Please stop trying to gleefully figure out how to fly just by moving a force wall around or putting a spring on it or whatever. It doesn't work.
