If we intend to talk about Keiko during the next meeting (as it seems we do), then I'm going to have to request we ask her this time.
Don't worry, that's in there.
Carefully ask Keiko's thoughts on the potential second meeting.
  • Ask permission to potentially talk about her with Ami.
This. Please.

Edit: And also Jiraiya, because he is Jiraiya.
Interesting, I believe I can put that in, it adds another perspective to that angle.
Reposting the plan once again, if anyone has anything to say about it let me know.

[X] Action Plan: Reasonable Handling of New Information.
  • Show the letter to Jiraiya. Help him find a clean shirt. In the process, quickly confirm conclusions:
    • Letter #1 was deliberately leaked through a compromised courier. Implication: Courier #2 wasn't compromised.
    • Letter #2 leaves us an opportunity to go along with the marriage (if it wasn't leaked), and signals that Ami'll drop it if we won't
    • Letter #1 was pretty aggressive: likely signals that she strongly prefers the former option. Testing Courier #1 was secondary.
    • If we run out of time, cover these later.
  • Tell Keiko and Noburi about the second letter. Pre-empt their concerns, this one's good news.
    • Let them voice their opinions.
    • Carefully ask Keiko's thoughts on the potential second meeting.
      • Ask permission to potentially talk about her with Ami.
    • Finally get Noburi's full opinion on the situation.
  • Do something calming and rote to relax a little, like making explosives.
  • Help Keiko plan for her upcoming fight.
  • Once Jiraiya returns, discuss the situation (include Noburi and Keiko; high-OPSEC conditions):
    • How long before we leave Mist?
    • Second meeting with Ami. Should it happen? If so:
      • Should we seek a honest answer regarding whether she's in danger/wants a political marriage?
      • Would require better OPSEC. A walk across the bay, then a picnic?
      • Ask about Keiko?
      • We're a bit shaken from recent events. Any advice?
    • If Jiraiya approves, send a letter. Contents:
      • Decline the favour.
      • Set up the second meeting.
        • Place: "near" a random restaurant.
        • Time: tomorrow? (Jiraiya's call.)
  • Clear this section with Jiraiya:
    • Watch today's matches.
    • Verify Ami's story (if time permits).
      • Byakuren's Cookbook: name-drop Ami for regulars-only menu.
      • Persuade Chouji to visit a few restaurants, inquire about their history. (We're paying.) Points of interest:
        • Connection between Byakuren's Cookbook and Experimental Cuisine.
        • Byakuren's Cookbook serving large groups of ninja.
    • If anyone talks about Hazou and Ami: no comment.

So... remove the bit about asking Jiraiya about asking Ami about Keiko?
Yep. After all, first we need to ask Jiraiya about asking Keiko about asking Ami about Keiko, then ask Keiko about talking with Jiraiya about asking Ami about Keiko, and only then can we ask Jiraiya about asking Ami about Keiko — let alone ask Ami about Keiko or (lords forbid) talk to Keiko.

To be more serious: sure, remove it. We'll be checking the entire meeting plan with him anyway; there's no particular need to ask him about that topic in advance.

I would love for you to find out the worldbuilding we've done for these things, but I don't know how Hazō would find it out.

On a completely unrelated note, didn't you once leave an open rift to the blade horror dimension somewhere in Iron?
Oh yeah we did, surely no longterm repercussions will come from that. Surely

Though you know in eastern movies/medeival anime there's always some sealed evil in every other village? Suddenly that makes a lot more sense. Think about how trippy it would be if a few decades from now some villagers build a shrine around the sealed blade horror portal, specifically telling people not to touch it because evil spirits are sealed within, only for some moron to do exactly that. It could be its own side story.

  • Talk with Keiko and Noburi:
    • The second letter. Pre-empt concerns: this one's 'good' news.

      • Carefully ask Keiko's thoughts on second meeting.

    • Invite Ino on a shopping trip. Opportunity to explore multinational markets!
      • Do not discuss Keiko or other sensitive topics like Ami or politics in general.
        • If it comes up, look sad and say "I'd prefer not to talk about that, please."
          • If pressed further: "Seriously, Ino. Can we not?"
      • Spend most of 2/3 of remaining allowance:
        • 1/3: On clothes in general. Trust Ino's judgment; she can pick some for herself.
        • 1/3: On potential disguises. Commoner's outfits from various countries, etc.
      • Bargaining:
        • Joke: Our friend is driving us bankrupt!
        • Ninja go through many clothes. Can we have a discount?
      • Structure route back so you pass by the blacksmith near the Mizukage's tower.
        • Thank Ino for help.
        • Money was tight growing up, so you're bad with fashion.
        • Reminisce about taking bets to jump onto the Mizukage's tower to help pay the bills. Guess that's far in the past.
          • Mind OPSEC on IN.
          • Expression: thoughtful, musing.
That's a lot of words on the shopping trip, and it's awfully telegraphic. Might be good to simplify and clarify.

Are you paying for Ino on the shopping trip?

I'll leave voting open until at least noon tomorrow. That will hopefully give the plan authors the chance to respond to the above comments.

I believe Keiko herself established that she has no right to prevent Hazou meeting Ami? are you referring to the question as to whether we may ask after Keiko herself?

That is indeed what it's supposed to read. Having lunch at the Cookbook to test name-dropping Ami wont't take up much of our time, and while we could do the rest ourselves we feel it's likely Choji will be happy to get a free meal tour of Mist.
What do you do if Keiko says no, you can't talk to Ami?
Then things get a bit awkward. I imagine we'd relay Keiko's stance on the meeting to Jiraiya and ask him to take that into consideration, and then if Jiraiya decides that it's important to go ahead anyways we tell that to Keiko.

I can probably go make that more clear in the plan, if I find a few words to compress.

Wait, that part's about whether or not we have Keiko's permission to talk about Keiko with Ami. There's nothing about asking her for permission for the meeting itself--and if that's a mistake, and we're indeed asking for permission to meet at all, then I'm removing my vote.

Indeed we aren't asking permission to talk to Ami. Which means it would be odd for Keiko to outright refuse and say we can't (rather than just say she doesn't like it), but if she does then it only seems prudent to relay that to Jiraiya. At the end of the day Keiko has no veto power, not over something like this, but even if her feelings aren't important enough to change the outcome we can still afford to take them into account.

The fact that eaglejarl brings it up means we should probably consider our response a bit more exactly, though.

How about this?
  • Carefully ask Keiko's thoughts on the potential second meeting.
    • If she tells us we can't, tell her that's up to Jiraiya.
    • Otherwise, ask permission to potentially talk about her with Ami.
I made asking permission to talk to Ami about her mutually exclusive with the response to Keiko trying to forbid a second meeting because I figure it'd be pretty insensitive to shut down her refusal and then start asking if she's okay with her as a topic and we could probably guess the answer anyways.

It's a 13 word increase, but if it's acceptable I'll find a way to put it in.

I just don't really see the value of asking now? I mean, if she says no and Jiraiya overrules her, that makes her feel worse; if she says yes, then it's decently likely she'll feel she had to say yes (to seem reasonable, etc), and she won't like that either. The only situation where she likely feels happier about it is if she says no and Jiraiya isn't up for a second meeting, which doesn't seem very likely (and not meeting her is probably a bad thing).

What's the actual aim of this? Because doing it entirely as a signalling gesture ("look, I asked this time!") would seriously annoy me, if I were in her shoes.

Edit: To be clear, what's the value of asking whether she's okay with us talking to Ami again, specifically. Asking whether she's okay with us talking about her when we meet Ami again is separate and much more valid, IMO.

We don't actually need to ask for permission, but informing Kei in advance that the meeting will happen seems polite. And I would very much prefer it states this way in the plan. Besides, it could be chopped down to "Inform Kei about the meeting"
