On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

[X] Refuse the Title of Heir: [Cost: Nothing] Gain ???. You will take up this hammer, you will use it, but you are your own Dwarf with your own goals. The burden of carrying Thungni's Will, of being His Heir, is one you choose not to carry. Someone or no one can claim it for all you care, but it will not be you.

[X] Claim the Title of Heir: [Cost: ???] Gain title: Heir of Thungni, ??? You claim a position that has remained in doubt since Durin died. By Thungni's word, the hammer you would now wield confirms that you are His Heir. Elevating your authority to that of the Ancestor's eldest children, living or dead. You would not, could not be a tyrant of course, but still.

Following the ways of your ancestors and taking on the duties of your lineage and inherited position is not "blindly following authority", its taking responsibility.

Fucking christ its like people are allergic to any tradition and think that our ancestors were stupid dipshits who didn't know any better.
I think the ancestors did a fine job with what they had.

I also think that some of Snorri's actions, that the Ancestors wouldn't have gone for or easily agreed to ("Judgment withheld pending results") have done a lot of good for the Karaz Ankor.

If Snorri becomes heir, and fits to his idea of Thungni like a glove, then Khazagar-level shakeups probably become impossible for a long while, since the ancestors wouldn't act that radically, and Snorri is emulating an ancestor as closely as he can.

Which I wouldn't be happy with. Khazagar was a fun development both in and out of universe. I want more things like that.

we're going to have to deal with politics anyway, we should do it from a position of strength.

Ultimately, the position is over hyped. We don't get that much from it.

I've changed my vote.

Its hard to pick a specific reason why just a lot of little reasons and arguments adding up to tip it over in my mind.

If I had to pick specific reasons it would be the fact that it is very uncertain of Snorri is correct on his interpretation and, as soulcake said, the vote is about whether to make your interpretation public; to me there is no real need to make it public. If Thungi wants it public let him do that himself. And ultimately if Thungi wanted Snorri as heir then he failed to prepare him and I think Snorri has the right to refuse him because of that.

Voting for the heir position seems to be "Try to live up to everyone else's ideal of Thugni"

Voting against being heir seems to be "Live up to our own ideal of Thugni"
Not quite.

The vote, at minimum, puts Snorri as a contender to the Seat of Durin. The guild is still ultimately going to have to decide between Alric who doesn't want it, Yorri who dissapeared as fast as he could, and Snorri who is believes he has a claim from a random poem no one knew about.

THe main benefit is that it allows us to use an otherwise impossible lever to effect the rune guild
Now, that was her choice and is fine. I don't want that for Snorri though. Akazit, Windsight, Durin's Consternation, these are Snorri's discoveries and I want them to be acknowledged as Snorri's - not as Thungni's by way of his Heir.
The prestige and political power is not worth that.
That's not the order of operation unfortunately/fortunately both for heirs and our achievements.

The Heir position you present only works when the Master is alive. If Snorri gets accepted as Heir it basically gives his words defacto assumption that Thungni approves of it as opposed to attributing Snorri's words/action to Thungni directly.

Additionally our achievements are the proof that we deserve being the Heir as opposed to it being Thungni's achievement because Thungni isn't alive while we're the heirs if , important if, our interpretation is correct. Remember that right now the Rune Guild would at best get a 3rd hand account being that Thungni already vague words being read by a Radical Runelord who just suffferd some form of mental trial. THey won't all agree to the position that we're heirs for decades at the soonest.
