On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Well I think all we can do is keep working down the paths we have been, I think that a greater understanding of magic was known by the ancestors and likely not something they could easily pass on. Also I guess we add the sword to the pile of stuff to chew through.

edit- also our standing bonuses with the brotherhood will be nice when they proc to get us to chew through research faster

I'm wondering if Windsight is also key to arranging the Runes so you can get more than three to combine without exploding; even if they couldn't interact with them safely any more than their children can, presumably the Ancestor Gods could (by virtue of being gods) see the flow of magic through the world.
Well, if Windsight was able to see what Runes were doing with Winds, it probably would have been mentioned.

How much do we need to worry about Runesmith secrets being scryed? I'm guessing Snorri's antimagic field makes him hard to scry directly but do we need wardstones for Khazagar?
All dwarves and runesmiths are passively anti magic. + any normal dwarf wardings will be present. This means Khazagar will passively with no player input be one of the hardest locations to scry on.
A lot of non religious secret information will be exchanged. Its a town sized location. Means that its a real roll of the dice where theres a significant chance that they just scry a lecture explaining how to identify the perfect troll heart for your gronti rune. Dwarves don't like those secrets getting into the hands of the undeserving, but its not a critical issue.
We aren't exchanging apprentice level rune lore nor are masters going to be teaching the deepest secrets, meaning the most important stuff is safe and anything important they can scry they may actually be missing the basics to contextualise.

By comparison it would be much easier to scry on a specific master with apprentices where theres less interference, a more predictable timetable and lessons are suited to those who are learning runecraft rather than those who already know it.

Okay, this is probably entirely the fact I'm poisoned as fuck by Morrowind, but I'm really looking at the Rikkenbaki and going "Is that the Fists of Rangadulf?"

Because it really "feels" like them.
As a fellow Morrowind poisoned individual, I'm starting to feel the same thing. I can see other parallels between items in Morrowind and items in quest. For example, the necklace that we currently use has a similar effect as Spell Breaker. It might be nice to draw some inspiration from them when making our own creations.

So when do you think we can start making Sunder, Keening, and Wraithguard?

Given the amount of institutional paranoia and how common anti-magic runes are I struggle to think of a more problematic group to scy on then Runesmiths. It should be noted that no one ever actually managed to steal the secrets of Runesmithing.

Does...that mean Runelore is a miniaturized derivative of Old One geomancy? Are we building tiny ass leylines into weapons and armor?
isn't that what rune already are, it like water pipe, it flow water (magic) through to do x or y

not all that different from the Slann geomantic web

I'm reminded of an old language diagram of WH fantasy, which noted that Runescript, the Elven magic script which name I've forgotten and the old tongue of Albion are the languages closest related to the Old ones and probably each partially descended from it.

The Hashut worshippers at Karak Dum managed it to some degree. Snorri smashed a piece of their attempt at replicating a rune.

I don't think we yet have any evidence for this. It could as easily be that breaking the rune of three requires techniques that resemble magical enchanting techniques (the high elves uses passages of Aonoquean runes),

Or that you can add more runes if you adapt the runes you use based on their neighbours so they work together in harmony rather than clashing or interfering with each other in a way that destroys the item they're on.

Or that while the axe looks like it's made of wutroth and gromril, it's actually been transmuted into some conceptually higher form by exposure to Grungni's divine energies in a fashion that Snorri can't detect.

Or even that while Snorri sees it as three Master Runes, it's actually really one linked in a higher dimensional space or some similar messing around so the three seem disconnected.

I don't think we're ready to say it's related to geomancy, although it could very well be based on Old One knowledge.

Look when someone says something completely crazy, assume they're wrong, don't build off of it.
If Leylines could enchant a thing, all of Malus would have had anti chaotic baked into it.

The axe probably involves subtle material changes which is where the sword (and armour) is involved. The next step of guessing is that precise control of the flow of magic within the axe prevents it from ever reaching a concentration which is damaging to the item itself. Even if that is true comparing it to Geomancy is like comparing a cars hydraulic system to a globe spanning oil pipeline. The scales and effects are hugely different even if they both involve moving fluids places.
E: ninjad. Rare to find myself agreeing with Alratan however a pleasant surprise to be sure.

[ ] [Difficult] The Movement of Things Pt. 5b: [Cost: (14 -8) =5 actions] Master of the Odd and Mind for Constructs will proc. Examining...the Construct, has given you ideas. It is not a Gronti, not truly, but it acts like one and is arguably even more versatile. It makes you wonder if perhaps there is a way to create Gronti of a similar shape and function.
-- +3 Progress to The Movement of Things Pt. 5b, new totals: [Cost: (14 -11) = 3 actions] He turns into lightning. How?
5-3=2 not 3.

Well alrighty then. Guess we'll have something fun to talk about with the Brotherhood on the way to Dron. I think Grungni managed to put a runic sentence down on the axe vs normal runesmiths managing the equivalent of three chicken scratch words before the thing blows up.

Man I forgot how much I like Snerra. She's right we really should do more social stuff

If gromil had impurities…… do we? And did the ancestors not? Could explain a lot and dwarves are supposed to be from stone or stone like.

Eh, forging Skarren was basically a textbook tribulation complete with lightning refining Snorri's magic runesmithy channels and all that went half complete because he didn't conduct the energy well enough.

Hm.

Wondering if this is like, potentially linked to how Karstah noted that the Albionese Armour is constructed in such a way that it's made of several component alloys yet there's no signs of welding. Because that feels similar to how the Runes are distinct, yet flow into each other and overlay.

Maybe not the same kind of technique, but the same kind of mentality?

While true there also never was such a tempting target for it.

I'd love to get them done.
I want to find out what Valaya's bonus to it is.

We got that for inspecting KaK's defenses way back.

Imagine trying to learn Quantum physics by only listening to university lecture courses when you don't know high school physics.
Thats what its going to be like trying to steal knowledge from Khazagar will be. They're going to have a lot of assumed knowledge they won't stop to revise.
We have had WoG on this. It isn't an in character worry at all.
Beyond their own anti magic the Runes they use as wards and for obfuscation I think you already mentioned, not really? When a system of observation uses something your presence naturally disrupts, Runes made for general anti-magic, and combos involving more mundane obfuscation, there wasn't impetus for a Rune dedicated to something so specific. The Dwarfs of Grom/Dum had to for a variety of reasons. #Runes #Mechanics
