On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Methinks the silver wutroth could help with this rune somehow. Because silver is the bane of dark things.

I'm pretty sure we aren't going to need any blessings of the gods for our gromril refining process. Just doesn't seem to fit with how runes work to me. I think we just need an appropriate array and we've simply not got the right mix of runes working yet. I'm especially interested in that void pickax from the dream, I wonder if there's a Rune of Void we can get?

It sounds to me that the mystery rune is a rune of void, or space, or emptyness. Basically replicating the absolute emptyness of space that the origional Gromril came from.
I think it is more about negating the infused essence of Warpstone within the Gromril than replicating the Gromril's origin point.

Likely not. This is more about negating the metaphysical corruption of Warpstone. Anything added onto the Gromril doesn't really remove what is already inside.

Trying to forcibly remove it is likely what caused the other bar to explode. Since the essence of Warpstone is so imbued within Gromril that it couldn't be removed without destroying the metal also.

Or, at least, that's my theory.

Not really. Thungni is the god of runecraft and all Runes basically derive their power from his godly domain, and the pantheon made up of his family members all have their own runes as well. They are heavily intertwined into the craft and Snorri is an ordained priest of Thungni as well.

I think I definitely told Bungie near the start of the thread, but having a bunch of complementary combos can create set bonuses. Im not sure if that's your question though...
You did yeah, basically a combo on a weapon or talisman or banner or whatever can have synergistic effects with other combos on other pieces of equipment is what you told me.

yeah that's just it, they are tied to Thugni and the glittering realm, not to the others.

Hmm, this is the third turn after we got Snerra. That means we get an apprentice action from our first two before they get to their Journey. Also, might mean that Snerra's developed enough to give an Apprentice Action of her own.

If so, we might have enough Apprentice Actions to go full on research again next turn (or combine it with exploring another Odd Place/Planning the Banner) while still being able to partially move through any Simple Requests that come up, provided they're not too pressing in terms of time.

Their runes draw/relate to concepts embedded in the glittering realm/Warp and Thungni wasn't the only one to find out how to do Runes, Grungni did to as did Valaya and Gazul who found the Runes for Grimnir, Grungni and Valaya. Grungni and Valaya also did stuff like invent the Rune of Spellbreaking.

Runes work as a language and magic system by imprinting order onto the ever changing nature of magic in the Realm of Chaos and the Glittering Realm (it is difficult to judge if these are even distinct, though the Glittering Realm is likely just small part of the Realm of Chaos). The Ancestor Gods are still gods and have thusly some divine impact onto the Realm of Chaos and its various parts. Case in point the Ancestor Runes and their unique state of existence in Runecraft.

Runecraft is a very religious craft, because Thungni is involved even if you try to discount the influence of the others.

Problem with that, sort of, is that there's likely not to be any Simple Requests to give to them except Apprentice Work since we've run those out and the Underway fortifications will take a little while to progress to a runeable state.

Yeah, but I'm kinda expecting a new one to pop up sooner rather than later, and will be pleasantly surprised if one doesn't.

One could potentially if Something Comes Up but there's enough Runesmiths in Kraka Drakk now, and there have been since like turn 5, that we've stopped getting straightforward infrastructural stuff except the insanity of the Defense in Depth chain.

Which makes sense from a cultural perspective; we're the only Runelord described as being in Kraka Drakk, and the only other one in the region is in some other hold as of yet unnamed. Who is this person anyway @soulcake or am I going mad(der than usual) and there isn't one? While the Guild of Runesmiths is very independent both as a whole and for individual members, we've gotten a lot of notes in the updates about most dwarfs in the Hold not wanting to bother the Runelord with requests which is a cultural thing of dwarfs. They only bug the elder craftsmen when they think they have a request that's worthy of the elder's very valuable time.

And this exists in lesser forms for Master Runesmiths, and Runesmiths, and Journeymen Runesmiths and so on where it seems decently well indicated that most of the Journeymen of the Guild run around doing the Rune equivalent of scutwork and taking tasks from the common dwarf most days.

You know with how we occasionally just lock ourselves in our workshop for Months if not Years on end I am sort of imagining a situation where we end up really deep in the zone when it comes to research or something only for the hold to fall then be reclaimed and someone opening our workshop to find us still working there asking what the big deal is.

I can imagine that this has happened to someone somehow in canon WF. Somehow, somewhere, some poor motherfucker just buried his head in research through a cataclysmic invasion.

I meant more, can one person put three runes together and not get a combo, and another put the same three runes in together with a special knowledge, and get a combo? They both know the same runes, but the second guy knows how to put them together in such a way as to make a combo: is that a thing? Is there more to making a combo than putting three runes together?

I think it straight up mentions in a previous chapter that it fell to Snorri to corral the Runesmiths in the previous update because he was the oldest in the hold. He then mentions thathe wasn't the oldest Runelord in the North, just this hold specifically.

Right that's where I got the "one other Runelord" thing from.

Same three runes will produce a combo regardless of the user. Again, the knowledge or beliefs of a single runesmith dont matter to the Runes, they weigh it against the sum collective will of every dwarf ever. Finding the right Runes is all it takes.

Kind of a weird question. What happens if you put 3 of the same runes on something? Say, Master rune of Spite with 2 normal runes of spite with it. Would it be extra spiteful or would it be a dud?

So, combo-synergies are a thing. In light of that, I think it would serve us well to find a good combo to synergize with Daemonward, so I started looking into a good anti-daemon weapon combo. Here's what I've got:

Master Rune of Breaking + Rune of Spellbreaking + Rune of Daemon Slaying

I mean, daemons are mostly magic, right? Break the magic, break the Daemon.
We'd need to order a [T2]Cockatrice's Eye to make it though.

Did you mean to say three runes with one being a Master version? Because for many the effect is enhanced.

Rune of Fire go's from Flaming attacks to Flaming attacks and S4 breath weapon, to Flaming attacks, S4 breath weapon and D3 Wounds

hey @soulcake I have an idea how about building a Dwarf version of the imperial zoo were various magical creatures like griffins , Cockatrice and more would be kept and bred to provide components for the rune smiths would make the hold even more self sufficient ?

That's what I meant, yeah. I was curious if the effect stacked or if it just made the item a dud. I honestly wasn't sure.
