I'm not saying we'll definitely lose. If anything, they're probably as fragile as we are, what with being a small island nation ruling over a lot of continental territory. I get the feeling that the right kind of defeat would lead to a rapid loss of vassals and subordinates for them. But they're the kind of enemy that could break us.

And I doubt it. Well, we sent Red Banner anyway, so we will learn how are they in battle firsthand soon.

Has no one considered going full Night of the Long Knives and making the patricians just... go away... slip in the bath, fall down a flight of stairs, or just have a sudden tragic accident?

Ah yes, the great idea of killing our entire government. Pray tell how would that help exactly?
My apologies. It's been some time since I was in here. I last decided to leave about the time you guys thought having giant mercenary armies was a good idea. I've returned to see that you've managed to create a class-stratified hellscape with mercenaries running about willy-nilly and with your upper crust of nobles destabilizing your government. Ideally, these problems would have been solved before they began by taking the appropriate actions, but that's crying over spilled milk.

Ideally at this point, objective #1 should be the complete elimination of the noble class in favor of a caste of bureaucrats entirely subservient to your government, lest you find this current setup somehow desirable. This would have to be done over generations and the scars would be long-lasting, but it seems like the only way to eradicate the current decentralized chaos the Ymaryn government has become.

And how exactly that government would be different from the government right now?
In that station should be based on skill, with family ties having minimized importance. A civil service system should be implemented so as to at least begin to create something vaguely resembling a meritocracy. This current system gives power to people because the two right people were in the same bedroom at the same time.

So exactly like now, huh? Patrician's children are legitimately super skilled, after all.
Except with the power of a declawed kitten. As in "follow the will of the central authority you are beholden to or you will beg the army for mercy". You've allowed them to garner far too much power and have too much influence. They need not be nobility living lavish lives above the commoner, merely bureaucratic functionaries.

Given patticians are one huge extended family its SoD breaking that they havent considered killing eachother at least once. :p

They're constantly offing one another, it's just not something that tends to concern the king so long as taxes get paid.

complete elimination of the noble class in favor of a caste of bureaucrats entirely subservient to your government

That's exactly what you have now. The hereditary bureaucrats (because that is the only way to actually train bureaucrats right now) are the only ones who know how to make the government work, so they are subservient to the government while also being the government. That this is hugely corrupt is inherent in the system, yes, but you will have to spend generations investing in education before this can possibly be not the case.
