Nothing important enough to get into. Genin Substitution seals are easy enough to be worth researching when healed. Even unmodified, you can daisy chain objects. Explosive stuffed log with seals ABCD swaps with log A in range of log B. Log ABCD swaps with log B. ABCD swaps with C. ABCD swaps with D. They are good offensively when you know where someone will be but not when. Swap in a big explosive. Leave less traces than field of traps. Do not get set off by beasts.
Seems easier to just set off a couple of Stupid Boxes via MARS.

Edit: Oh and finishing force walls for veterancy into force claws.
Strobe seals for a fast combat powerup.
Fire storage seals to work on an amaterasu counter

Made a second path.

I still prefer waiting until Ath 60/Alt 50 to learn Lightning Element, but I know that there's been debate about learning Lightning Element at Ath50/Alt49.

Both paths will use the same XP, it's just a matter of when we choose to learn Lightning Element, and when certain decisions are made (such as Substitution 30, which comes after Ath 60).

This also doesn't account for if Minatosealing is its own separate stat (as with Primordial Sealing). If the precedent about prereqs from biosealing/lithosealing hold true, we'll find out at THing 30.

So I didn't actually know that Substitution is just very fast movement. That's on me of course. I often only skim over rules and jutsu descriptions and this was even more true in the past.

That said, I am quite curious how that works. Like, what path does the object that is being switched with the ninja take? Does it almost crash into the ninja at amazing speeds, narrowly getting diverted? If you have a tunnel or doorway that you fit through exactly, does it mean you can't substitute through it, even if there's an eligible object in line of sight/effect? Does the rushing ninja and the rushing object affect the air at all? Can Substitution be THd in order to create an object attracting jutsu that crashes things into the backs of opponents that are engaged in melee combat with you?

In general "just moves very fast" leaves questions open when it comes to a technique that swaps the places of two objects without involving any awareness or choice regarding the travel path of either object (despite one of them being the caster themselves).

Some starting notes from the QMs before we get into the bulk of things:
  • Seals are always a lot of work for us because of the extent of the implications they can have on the setting. For many of these, we're accepting that using them appropriately could have pretty big impacts on the setting, and that Jiraiya was simply too secretive/busy/uncreative to use them in such ways.
  • However, with the amount of seals we've made, it's highly likely we've overlooked some simple combination of these seals with each other, some combination with common techniques, or some simple variation achievable by sealing research that would be setting-breaking in a way we don't think makes sense. We'll try to resolve these with minor changes, rather than removing the seals altogether.
  • We very much appreciate feedback on these seals. Saying "this seems too strong!" or "this seems too weak!" is valid feedback.
  • As per usual, difficulty checks specify the seal's difficulty without notes.
  • We are likely going to create a few more seals for this library at some later point. We continue to take suggestions for seals to add.
  • We're rolling in some seals already posted so that we can provide extra information about them, and also so that everything lives in a single informational threadmark.

The Seals

Jiraiya's research notes are scattered, with seals of various difficulty in different places. There's occasional notes in the margins by other people's handwriting. Between Jiraiya's journals, Minato's poetry, and Orochimaru's notes, you can identify all of them.

Flame Absorbance Seal

This seal destroys nearby Fire style jutsu by sending out waves of chakra at the right "frequency". Despite appearing like the jutsu are being sucked into the seal, the jutsu constructs are merely being disrupted and dispersed.

Sensei, this is a very irritating seal. Apart from the way it ████████ ████████ ██ ███████ ████ ██████, its proliferation also would disproportionately harm Leaf. Please do not use it in the field, if possible.
Yeah, I know what you mean. It messes with my ████ ███████ ████ too. Still, better to have in the back pocket, you know?

Lightning Absorbance Seal

Like the Flame Absorbance Seal, but with Lightning-style ninjutsu instead.

Lightning Rod Seal

Difficulty: Jōnin
Movable: Yes
Components: 1
Duration: 1 minute

Diverts incoming Lightning-style ninjutsu to the seal. Typically, this destroys the seal.

Fuck the Hyūga Seal

Difficulty: Chūnin
Movable: Yes
Components: 1
Duration: 1 hour

Makes an invisible chakra construct, apparently in the shape of an obscene gesture.

Vanishing Seal

Makes an attached object disappear, along with the seal. After a while, the object reappears.

Turned out to be easier to just do it with dimensionalism, go figure.
Ah, I am glad you found a solution in the end.

Mechanically: The seal wraps space around itself and the attached object, generating a storage space. Time does not pass inside the space but the space itself unwinds over time as 'spatial elasticity' pulls reality back to normal, at which point the object and the seal reappear. (NB: This is single use, as are all seals unless specified otherwise.)

Twin Repulsion Seals

Difficulty: Chūnin
Movable: Yes
Components: 2
Duration: 10 minutes

Paired seals that push away from each other. The strength of the push is stronger when they are closer. If attached to an object, the force of the push is evenly distributed across the object.

Silent Sandals Seal

Difficulty: Chūnin
Movable: Yes
Components: 4 (2 on each foot)
Duration: 1 hour

Like Banshee Slayers. Enhances Stealth when used on feet.

These were surprisingly helpful in the Inazuma mission.

Update: this seal has some very bad failure modes. As in, sealing failure modes. Don't use in the field until further testing. In retrospect, the instability in the third-order Tatewaki cycle should have been a giveaway.

Unfortunately, the seal only affects dirt and the force holding it together is insufficient to make the impact harmful. It's more of a prank than a weapon.
 
Okay, so assuming that the desired timeskip occurs, that's 7 days.

Kei's going to get ((3base*7days)*1.7FOOM)*0.8stagnant = 28.56xp

28.56 + 19 = ~48xp, which means we can level CotWG to level 13, next voting cycle.

I don't suppose that the notes tell us what kind of effect they're preventing from taking place? Does Hazou have any idea what this seal does other than the name?

Opsec suggestions for when we go missing:

  • Decoy sealing facility? Maybe one of those prefabs we sell? Set it up so that it's trapped and whatnot. Might catch a hunter nin off guard, we might get lucky. It'll warn us they're here, and give us time to prep for combat (steal and loot their corpses for powerups).
  • Orochimaru's Illusion Seals: From a distance, they won't see us, and we'll blend into the background of the environment (especially if we're up on a skytower or something)
  • Selective Darkness Zone Seals: once the illusion is pierced, they see only void, while we see them just fine
  • Flame and Lightning Absorbers out. Covers 2/5 of the Elemental Spectrum, and no one uses Fire or Lightning attack ninjutsu.
    • Will need to test if they absorb ninjutsu buffs, like Strength of the Storm
  • Earthshaping a Mud Hut to disguise the base in the environment, under all the layers of dirt.
  • Substitution targets and whatnot, hidden under more of Orochimaru's illusion seals for if we're ambushed
  • Escape tunnels for further escape routes
  • Pressure Activated Force Push Seals into tripwire seals
  • Standard MEW + tripwire seals
  • chakdar + Invisibility Detection Seals during watch

Observation:
Force Push Seals + tripwire-triggered seals + Orochimaru's illusion seals = hecking nice traps to push people into, especially if used in conjunction with decoys and more blatant traps.

We likely won't have had time to research most of these seals. Sealing Research takes a long time and we are quite backlogged.

I think these three have the most use as anti-Akatsuki & anti-Dragon (A2/AD) rune weapons given the multiplicative effect of runes.

The Substitution Seal/Rune to set up ambushes from long-ranges by swapping distant foes with a selected object in the middle of a trap array.

The Leadening Seal/Rune to keep people locked down. Especially if we can define the area tightly enough that we're not necessarily effected while still being able to deal damage. Would also be generally useful in the trap setup described above.

The Tracking Earth Bullet Seal/Rune as essentially long-range semi-guided artillery. The "nearest chakra source" clause might make friendly-fire an issue and it could be more directly useful if it tracked towards the LARGEST chakra source in the area, because then we could get them to rain down on say, Kisame, who has a shark-butt's worth of chakra in his coils! (note: might not be a good anti-dragon weapon if their beings are naturally repellant to chakra)

As Paper discussed on Discord tonight. In general, seals that affect objects (like Sub seals, storage seals, 5SB, etc. ) need to be used on discrete objects, with no chakra. This means no living things, no people, and no seals.

So you can't swap your enemies around with Sub seals.

You can't even Sub-seal in a rock with 50 explosive tags on it. Since the tags attached to the rock have chakra in them.

You can't chain Sub seals at all, since you need to put a bunch of elements on one object to chain and the elements can't work if the object has seals on it.

Unclear if runes have this limitation, but it's also unclear if this is remotely workable into a rune given runic drag.

How about a more mundane use for substitution rune: either bulk cargo transport or discrete communications.

I would love teleport pads, but I think the things are one use.

Actually, no explosive seals, but maybe it's time to research mundane explosives?
 
Okay everyone. We need to invent dragonsealing. Dragons don't use chakra. Dragons are probably External so making dragon matter interfact with the Out should be doable. Dragonseals will be discrete objects that don't contain chakra. We can make normal seals and them affect each other as "objects" just fine.
