Actually, there's a fourth possibility. One of our teams could have gotten noticed by a Konoha patrol and was tracked to this point, and they're doing battle now. Combat capabilities are probably unknown but trackers=/=fighters, necessarily.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @AugSphere @Jackercracks
1. If we burn chakra and flat-sprint it back home how much time will it take?
2. What's the sound range of an explosive tag? Would our home guards have heard?

All fights so far have lasted something like 10 seconds. We are, at best, 200 seconds away from the disturbance. If friendlies are fighting monsters, it is going to be over long before we can arrive. If friendlies botched a trap, their teammates are already patching them up or they are all dead. If it's hostile ninja (not Zabuza), they are probably more powerful than us.
In all of these situations, we should hightail it back to base, get reinforcements/orders from Shikigami-sensi and return to investigate.

Those are not the only options. It could also be friendlies making evasive maneuvers and buying time/calling for help with explosives. It could be a hapless non-Zabuza level ninja who triggered a trap and are picking themselves up and preparing to evacuate. Explosion might have killed 2 of our ninja but left 1 bleeding on the ground or something like that.

In all of those situations it would be beneficial to investigate.

1. 20 seconds. Wait, you said back to base, my bad. I thought you said to the battlefield for some reason.
2. It's unlikely. Consider how far you can walk in 20 minutes. Obviously the ninja are checking for ambushes along the way so it's not quite the same distance, but close enough for visualising distance.
Edit:
Is there a cost to ask for our teammates' immediate opinions on how we should proceed?
The time taken to ask them, the fact that they will have had mere moments to compose an answer.

Possible sources of explosion that I can think of, and my analysis of the best approach to solving them:
  • Genjutsu
    • Use dispel
  • Base alarm going off
    • Because of swamp creature
      • Honestly, we can probably deal with a swamp creature (see fluff and number of dice)
    • Because of civilian
      • Honestly, doesn't really matter what we do. They're probably dead or dying.
    • Because of ninja
      • Appropriate action depends on what ninja and why. If friendly, probably help. If hostile, warn and/or engage
  • Battle explosion
    • Friendlies were victorious
      • Go and help. Maybe they need help bringing back loot or getting chakra water or closing their gaping wounds
    • Friendlies were not victorious
      • Defeat unfriendlies - probably beyond our current combat ability
Personally, I'm for investigating. Most of the possibilities are within our capabilities of dealing with, and those which aren't are still bad news if we run straight back to base, and I can taste the scent of XP. Obviously we should use stealth as much as possible, but probably shouldn't count on it actually working. If I'm not mistaken, we just roll stealth vs. awareness to see if we're successful, and most ninja have more than 5 dice of awareness (I think). So it's worth using if it doesn't cost us much, but I wouldn't suggest something like separating Hazo from the group to use his extra stealth if it took him away from the relative safety of the others.

Other things we should definitely include in whatever vote wins:
  • We'll want to address how we suggest our teammates spend their points. I'm currently thinking Hazo should start investing in stealth, and maybe deception, and Noburi should work on the water drain and diplomacy. Not sure what to suggest Keiko work on.
  • We'll want to address how we can work on the extraction mission. Going would be epic, but definitely will require more social skills than we've been training thus far. If we get another training opportunity, and we manage to wrangle some XP from this bonus encounter (how I'm interpreting the explosion), we might be able to get enough Stealth to be worth bringing, for intel and for our bloodline (we can copy stuff pretty effectually, and our seal-blanking may be a useful bartering tool to use with a seal-ninja, especially if we level deception a lot).
ETA: Wait. We can get to our base in 20 seconds if we burn chakra? This changes things. Too good to be true statement was too good to be true :(

Hm, at a distance of 1 mile and a sprint speed of 20 seconds, that's 180 mph. Are we burning chakra to achieve that speed? I guess it's not a huge deal with Noburi here to top us off. Can Noburi / Mori hustle at the same rate given their much lower Taijutsu scores?

As well as situational bonuses and penalties. For example, if by luck you happen to be coming up behind your opponent you'd likely get a bonus. If they're halfway down the throat of a tentacle creature you would expect to do better as well. Can't expect people to give their very best while heavily distracted.

I mis-spoke.

If it takes 20 seconds at a dead sprint to get to the battlefield explosion, how much time does it take to get to the battle field assuming a stealthy sprint? Would we just need to burn more chakra for that?

ETA: sorry, didn't read (30 seconds for any other careless readers out there)

Well, 90-180 mph depending, I see you there picking the number that gives you the same top speed as an Aston Martin DB9 :p

You are indeed burning some chakra to achieve that speed, as well as water walking at the same time. Not a massive amount though: internal reinforcement is more efficient than breathing out chakra and setting it on fire.
Can Noburi / Mori hustle at the same rate given their much lower Taijutsu scores?
Are you absolutely sure you want me to answer that?

@Jackercracks you didn't exactly give an answer for my question: ETA until base given flat chakra enhanced sprint? Also, I just wanted a gut feeling for a Yes/No, not a 10min explanation. Shouldn't be a second. Like:

Hazou: Investigateornoanswernow
Noburi&Keiko: Yes/No

Honestly because I'm not 100% sure. I'd have to discuss hard numbers with the others once they're online. I wouldn't exactly recommend a flat sprint back to base in any case: it's far faster than safe speed over distance through the death-swamp.

I can say "slow enough that 9/10 battles would be over before you got home".
Also, I just wanted a gut feeling for a Yes/No, not a 10min explanation. Shouldn't be a second. Like:

Noburi would hypothetically say yes, Keiko looks intently forwards and doesn't answer. Guess she's undecided.

So what is the due date, Wednesday? It's not listed on the post but Wednesday is usually the time.

Also we need to get people to talk first and THEN vote. Seriously.

It is really important to know whether our team can move at the same speed or if we personally are slower / faster than them! Especially in this situation.
Keiko's tactical movement would let her keep up, Noburi would be a few seconds behind. Or just wait a small amount for him to stay in formation.

I'll amend my vote later but I'm thinking the groups devised some long range communication already?
What if we signal a quick, crude message of swamp friendlies incoming?

Any thing we can use to signal that's not on the level of a paper note?

In order for us to be under genjutsu the caster would need to be targeting us, right? I'm assuming that would require line of sight. So... I would recommend we use dispel, DODGE, circle around to where we heard the explosion, and then dispel again. I think this would be a would idea since if we are under genjustu then we are either being led to a trap or are currently under attack.

[] Use dispel.
- [] DODGE
If under attack:
- [] Chackra boost taijutsu attacks
If not under attack:
- [] Circle around to the explosion site
- [] Use dispel again

Yes, sorry. Edited in.

Wait a minute.

Mind control tentacles?

... ... ...

Well, not exactly mind control. It shoves a tentacle into your spinal column between C4 and C5, interfaces with your nervous system, and overrides all motor control commands outgoing from the brain to the body. Don't worry, though, it doesn't have any reason to shut down the incoming ones so you still have full sensory awareness.

wow, that's several times more horrifying than what I was thinking. good job.

on a completely unrelated note, [Internal Screaming Intensifies]

My work here is done. :>

Out of curiosity, did you read my novella "Baby Blues" back when I was handing it out? I like to think I'm pretty good at psychological horror, but I haven't done any for a while; nice to know I haven't lost the touch.

Since its pretty close should they stay 10-15 seconds back while we check ahead to scout as we have the best stealth? If we can't survive the ten seconds or so alone against whatever it is if it does spot us then well this was probably a bad idea all around anyway.

[X] use dispel.
-[X] if nothing changes, check out the disturbance stealthily.
