We are now taking suggestions for what seals might be in Jiraiya's notes. We already have this batch: Marked for Death: A Rational Naruto Quest
XL Storage Seal:
It's a storage seal, but with 10x the storage capacity. It has some bugs though, unfortunately, and ninja being ninja, no one ever took the time to try and work out the bugs on a seal that doesn't have combat utility anyway. If this seal is ever destroyed while in use (i.e. holding something), it will cause a sealing failure. Not could like normal storage seals, but will. Because of this it is marked as too dangerous to use.

Heating Seal:
This seal heats up the zone it's in by 5 degrees Fahrenheit over the course of 1 minute. Stackable. It was made by a sealmaster who was trying to miniaturize explosives, but changed the wrong variables. Very nice in the winter.

Frictionless Seal:
This was made by a sealmaster who wanted to remove friction on ninja so they could run faster. Unfortunately, it also removes friction on the feet, making running impossible. Any object that this seal is placed on which is smaller than 10 feet in any direction has nearly all friction removed from it for 10 minutes or until the seal is removed. If activated while placed on the ground, this seal removes friction from the ground in one zone, making movement nearly impossible (malus to Athletics rolls to anyone in that zone who is standing on the ground). Has found use as a battlefield control seal.

Here's a list of the more recent seal ideas we made upon QM request. I'm pretty sure I got them all, most of the ideas tapered out after OliWhail's update.

Edit: Oh yeah, should probably ping @eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail
RFP: New Seals
Jiraiya left you notes on a bunch of new seals - on the order of several dozen.

We would like to crowdsource the creation of these things. Specifically, we would like to ask for ideas that have as many of the following as possible:
  • A name that makes it easy to refer to the seal (describes what it does, not easy to confuse with other existing seals, etc)
  • A one-sentence description of the effects, optionally followed by more details.
  • Suggested mechanics
  • An assessment of how the seal might be abused in-universe and why that hasn't already been done.
A couple things we want to note explicitly:
  • Some of these seals were created in Jiraiya's early days and will have research TNs that you might be able to hit. Those seals will have relatively minor effects. Others will be ones that he made up more recently, and are insanely difficult but also more powerful.
  • Not all of Jiraiya's seals were unique to him. We might take any or all of your suggestions and put them in the hands of other people, potentially including your enemies.
Potential seals:
Wallbreaker Seal
Take a large, overcharged macerator storage seal, and link it with an explosive tag.

When it impacts a surface, it does the following:
1: Stores as much of the material as possible for the moments it takes to grind it.
2: Unstores the cloud of splinters/pebbles/whatever.
3: Explodes, throwing the broken things everywhere as shrapnel.

It's basically a grenade that also tears a big chunk out of whatever it hits.

Eight Trigrams Sealing Style
Jiraiya would undoubtably have either known about or been researching the seal on Naruto. We probably don't have his notes on it, but we should be aware that he knew about it.

Seal of Darkness
Based on the anti-hyuuga seal, or the other way around. Prevents light from entering or exiting the contained area. One of Jiraiya's basic privacy seals.

Liquifier Seal
Like a goo bomb, but it doesn't create goo; it turns things into goo. Useful for disposing of evidence.
Oil Slick Seal
Spray a bunch of slicky oil over an area, making it impossible to stand up or hold on to anything.

Assessment: Can be easily be overcome with waterwalking although will at least briefly impend enemy movement unless they are prepared.
Whisper in the wind seal: based on the the Jutsu whispers on the wind. A 2 element seal. One element records and transmits all sound within half a meter. The other element intently reproduces those sounds. In its most basic version last for 1 hour upon activation. Has a range of 200 meters. More advanced versions that have uses in spying are alluded to. Though Kagome has yet to uncover them
Demon's Rage Seal
When activated, generates a menacing aura around the user.

Might just boost the user's Intimidate by the sealmaster's Sealing Aspect Bonus or something.
Freeze Seal

Works by sucking a lot of heat out of the area around it when it activates.

Mechanically it works as an inferior explosive tag with less damage, but it can be useful for countering certain fire and water jutsu or manipulating the environment. Sample uses include freezing the water someone is standing in (if they aren't water walking) to temporarily trap them, sucking the heat out of a fire evocation jutsu to cancel its effect, or freezing a water manipulation jutsu so the user can no longer move it. A water jutsu user could move water into a desired shape and then freeze it with the seal to keep it there until it melts. Out of combat the seal could make it a bit easier to break things by making them somewhat more brittle and prone to shattering, especially if several seals are used in succession.

In terms of theory, the seal is a modification of the storage seal concept that is primed to absorb heat and nothing else. It does so until the internal storage hits an energy density limit and then pops, destroying the seal and ejecting the heat into interdimensional space. Or something. What happens to things in ruptured pocket dimensions is not well understood.

The seal could theoretically be used to freeze water for sale, but ninja a) Tend to have tunnel vision that focuses exclusively on combat applications, and b) Scribing a seal to make a one ton block of ice that you then have to figure out a way to sell to someone seems like a lot of work. There were easier ways for Jiraiya to make money even if it occurred to him.

The seal might be modifiable into a directional version that could be safely held when it went off, using the ideas behind Kagome's directional explosives. Such a version wouldn't need to be thrown accurately to be useful in combat, but it would only work on targets (people, jutsu, objects, etc) at very short range.

Jiraiya made the seal fairly early in his career, and a skilled Sealmaster might also be able to make a modification of the design that stopped absorbing heat before it breached. This would create a version that worked as a freeze seal once and then a sort of fireball seal once, with mechanical properties similar to an explosive tag but with more plasma burns and less explosion. Good for incinerating things. Sadly the seal wouldn't survive the effects, otherwise it'd be reuseable in this configuration.

A very skilled sealmaster might be able to combine Kagome's directional concept with the more careful absorption concept to create a short range reuseable freeze/fire seal. These would be internally very complex and require an advanced sealmaster's expertise at holding the complex pattern in their head to infuse.

Feedback?
Cat Herding Seals

Comes in two variants: one produces a scent that cats deeply dislike, and the other produces a scent that cats enjoy. Both scents are negligibly noticeable by non-cat beings (even with super-smelling, like the Inuzuka), being roughly equivalent to cut flowers that have been left sitting around for a few weeks.

The included notes strongly imply that it's a good idea to keep at least a half-dozen of each variant on one's person at any given time, but don't say why.
Spikeball Seal
Creates a large spherical mass of spikes that is propelled forwards at high speeds, tearing up anything that gets in its way.
Makes an attack of some sort (flat TN? Sealing level?) against an enemy within the same zone and also places the Aspect [Chewed Up Ground] on the zone.

Earthquake Seal
When placed on the ground and activated, creates large chaotic waves of force that violently shake the ground and render footing unstable for a short period of time.
All land-based combatants in the user's zone and adjacent zones have the Aspect [Unstable Footing] placed on them with a free tag as long as the seal's active. When the seal ends, each zone gains the Aspect [Broken Earth] and, if there were any large structures like trees or houses, another Aspect [Rubble and Ruins].

Fire Arena Seal
Four seals placed in a square that, when one of them is activated, creates four giant walls of fire between the seals for a short time.
When placed and activated, increases the Border of the zone by 1 and anyone who enters or leaves the zone takes one shift of damage and gains the Aspect [Is It Hot In Here?]. Lasts for three rounds.

Water Sentinel Seal
Creates a large floating ball of water above the seal. If a ninja draws within range of it the ball of water shoots in the ninja's direction and freezes on contact.
While this seal is active, if a ninja enters the same zone as it the Water Sentinel rolls [High TN] against their Athletics and if successful places the Fragile Aspect [Frozen Solid] and the Aspect [Covered in Ice] on them. If multiple ninjas are within the zone at the same time the target is chosen randomly.

Greater Water Sentinel Seal
As above, but every time a Water Sentinel is triggered a new Water Sentinel forms by the next turn. Lasts up to five iterations.

Rock Monster Seal
When placed on a rock, attaches firmly to it and moves it around the battlefield erratically. If the rock gets close to a person the rock explodes into violent shrapnel.
Creates a new 'combatant' on the field acting directly after the sealmaster. On its turn it will attempt to come close to a random ninja within the zone, rolling a set TN versus Athletics. If successful the rock deals Weapons 4 damage and is removed from combat.

Greater Rock Monster Seal
Ten-component seal placed on ten different rocks. The rocks assemble together into a humanoid shape (two rocks per limb, largest rock in the torso, one rock for head) that lumbers around the zone, attacking any ninja within reach.
The Greater Rock Monster has Jounin-tier Taijutsu and Physique but weak Athletics, Alertness, and only two stress boxes. When it runs out of health, three rocks eject from the Greater Rock Monster and behave as regular Rock Monsters while the remaining rocks explode violently, dealing Weapons 6 damage to anyone in the zone who fails to make an Athletics roll of TN [high].

Ghost Fist Seal
Sends out pressurized bursts of air in front of the seal, assisting the user in creating a flurry of blows against their opponent.
If activated while making a Taijutsu roll against someone, gives free tag on Aspect [Punching Air] for use in the roll. Can be activated against an enemy without a Taijutsu roll, in which case it rolls [Low TN] against them.

Great Pillar Seal
Nearby earth is drawn towards the seal, raising a wide pillar of earth upwards and leaving a valley behind around it.
Increases zone Border by [high amount. 3? 5?]. Gives free tag on Aspect [Great Pillar] for Presence and Intimidate rolls against people not also on the pillar.

I hope I made these bombastic enough to befit Jiraiya's preferred style :D
Thanks m8.
With that knowledge so do I go forth.

Time for some 'cheap utility seals' that J man probably collected in the early days to make his life easier (and the life of his team).

Sand Disc
This seal (and kit) reveals relative concentrations of chakra in real time in an Area of Effect centered on the seal.

A seal that comes paired with a small tray and a roll of sand. While active, the seal reveals the relative positions of concentrations of chakra in an X meter radius by controlling the concentration of sand at points in the tray.

Use: Useful for counter ambush, long term area surveillance, and identifying the power levels of targets of interest. Though unweildy, a clever team may find it useful to keep track of opponents chakra stores in battle (and maybe even chakra laced attacks if the seal is sensitive enough)

Limitations: Gives relative chakra concentrations but does not identify target. Could be an enemy ninja, a chakra beast, a decoy/clone, or a trap. Kit is vulnerable enough to be difficult to use while in motion, and is capped in what it can display by the size of the tray and the amount of sand. Less useful in situations of extreme chakra level disparity except to draw attention to it.

Side note: The requirement of the kit gives the creator more chances to earn a profit.

Knocking Seal
Opens doors by removing the locking mechanism.

A seal for those with rusty lockpicking skills or ninja simply in a hurry but not willing to cause massive collateral damage. The seal disintegrates a thin band of material around itself and projecting from its sticky surface in a straight line for a distance of X.

Uses: Opening things, killing things inefficiently but effectively, otherwise making cuts of [seal paper dimensions] that are X meters deep.

Limitations: A waste of a seal except that time you really really needed something like it.

Side note: I was originally thinking of a seal that simply opens locks or reveals their internals for easier picking, but I couldn't figure out a way to make it universal and also simple. Magnetism and gravity manipulation maybe? Sound/vibrations would be the simplest to use but probably defeats

Gotta go, but coming up if I can figure it out is 'quick shower seal' which would be invaluable for any ninja, and more powerful seals that could be mid-level trump cards.
Surprise Stationery Snakes Seal

When activated, does nothing until exposed to a sudden jolt or large change in light levels, at which point a huge volume of accordion-folded paper 'snakes' spew from the surface of the seal. Included notes suggest that this was intended for a friendly prank on Orochimaru, but that Jiraiya shelved it because it was taking too much work to get it produce the 'snakes' at any speed and throughput lower than a firehose.

(The produced paper is very rough and pulpy, making it useless for sealwork, but it could be repurposed for simple notes.)
Some vanilla options that we know exist are extra -large storage seals. Thats probably an easy one mechanics wise? Bump the volume of the box up to 10m^3 (so a tiny bit larger than 2x2x2 m in all directions) and the weight limit up to 500kg or somesuch.
General Tech Trees I Think J Would Have Specced Into
  • Attacks (Because he's a combat monster.)
    • Energy/Force blasts?
    • Chakra Construct Fluids (like Goo Bombs but with an effect other than adhesive)?
  • Subterfuge (Because he's a spymaster.)
    • Sensory disruption? We know he had Silence Mines.
  • Social (Because he thought enough about that problem to think of the Scary Aura Seal.)
    • Might have seals that change enviroment subliminally to achieve specific reactions (air pressure/temperature/scent/harmonising voice/airbrush face/etc.)
    • Might have a Voice Distorter Seal to boost Deceit.
  • "Elemental"(Because he said so.)
    • He gave us his "wind" based seals (Purifier/Tunnler's Friend/Silence Mine/Banshee Slayer/Alarm/Air Dome).
    • He no doubt has similar things for lightning, fire, water, and earth.
Camouflage Seal
It's not a camouflage seal, not really. When activated, visible light up to a 5m radius around the seal gets mixed and what gets reflected from the radius is a nearly-monochrome average of the light inside the seal's sphere of influence. For well-lit, colorful areas, the seal works... well, it doesn't, really. But in dimly-lit, near-monochrome conditions, the seals renders you near-invisible.
Gust of Wind Seal

Does what it says on the tin. One of his earlier seals back when he was trying to replicate elemental affinities with seals.

Suggested mechanics: May be used to reduce the effectiveness of ranged attacks, or increase the effectiveness of imprecise ranged attacks (those dependent on precision like non-explosives-based ranged attacks will not be improved) or fire jutsu. Provides a +/- attacker's AB on relevant attacks, and the fragile aspect (tag included, as usual), [Gust of Wind] or similar. It may be used between 2 and 5 times before the seal burns out, but no one in their right mind counts on reusing it more than once during combat.
Quick Clean Seal

This seal isn't as good as a bath, but it's a relief when you're stuck in the field.

Mechanically, the Quick Clean Seal is a specialized storage seal that stores sweat and skin oil in a radius on activation. This isn't quite as good as a bath and doing laundry since it doesn't do anything for other kinds of dirt that are too varied to describe to the seal precisely, but it's a big relief when on a mission where baths aren't available or if you're the Hokage and just don't have the time.

Overuse of the seal eventually tends to cause uncomfortable dry skin problems.

Unstoring the collected sweat and skin oil is possible but produces a thoroughly disgusting runny slime.

Credit to @Falconis for the idea.
Seal Seal

Produces a live, unexceptional saltwater seal out of nothing. If the seal dies, it starts slowly dissolving into sulfurous glitter, so it's not useful as a food source or barricade.
Mimic Seal
Two seals, put on two different contiguous objects with 5m distance. When activated, Seal A records the physical properties of the object it's on. Seal B makes the object it's on take on the physical properties recorded in Seal A, as if the object was somehow made of Seal A. Damage to either object reverts the effects of the seal.
Arresto Momentum Seal

Generates a force on the object or person it is attached to (up to 150kg) in the opposite direction of its motion (relative to the earth) such that it is decelerated to 0m/s over 1 second.
Zap Seal
When activated, releases an short electrical surge onto whatever the seal is attached to.
The Mortal Seal
  • Kills anyone who activates it.
The Sentinel Seal
  • Buzzes and glows faintly when other seals nearby are used. Can be keyed to a particular type of seal.

The Sobering Seal
  • Gets rid of hangovers and intoxication.

The Wakefulness Seal
  • Increases the user's wakefulness as if they were to drink a strong cup of coffee.

The Wrathful Seal
  • A seal with fifty elements which contains enough power to destroy an entire village
  • nvm this is just SIN
Warranty Tag
Void if seal is broken.

Time Bomb Seal
(Note: not timed bomb.)

@Noumero : Poke poke.

Note the qualifier, "significant". He's still clear to use it for pretty vengeance and general screwing with people. There nothing preventing a troublesome academy instructor from waking up one day with a crippling conditioned phobia of bananas and literally no way of ever knowing why.

Somehow, I suspect that he won't find, "the extradimensional eldritch horrors from beyond time and space who have been stuffing apocalyptic ideas into your meatpuppet of a student have taken a personal interest in you, specifically", comforting.
Store-Rage Seal

Use when angry to calm down. Use again when calm to angry up.

___________________________________________________________

Hey, how do storage seals decide what object in front of them to seal?
Tripwire seals:
Made roughly half way through his career, these seals are linked such that when one is destroyed, the other incinerates itself.

They were made as part of a series of experiments to make seals cascade off each other.
Cancer Seal:
Causes cells to divide rapidly on physical contact with the seal, using large amounts of a target's energy and giving them a massive cancerous lump where the seal is placed.
I don't understand the system well enough to do mechanics, unfortunately.
Seal can be used to create massive fruits and vegetables by applying it to the fruit/veggie at the end of growing season. This will make huge produce (at the expense of draining energy from the rest of the plant, meaning fruit trees and other perennials are less suitable for this as they may die if this is used extensively on them) which are able to feed several people. It won't look pretty, but they food will be just as safe to eat as normal versions, as the cells only continue to divide while the seal is touching them. This is a seal that Jiraiya recently acquired from Arikada, so he did not have much time to think about applications for it since he was busy being Hokage and searching for Naruto. Before him it was used as a particularly horrible and inefficient means of killing someone, although Arikada found some use for it as a steppingstone to the seals that created the giant exploding slabs of flesh she had grown off of herself.
In general, ninja don't care about making it easier for civilians to grow food better. Any sealmaster who did decide to use this seal on produce would not have wanted to eat it because it makes the fruit ugly and ninja (especially sealmasters) can afford better food.
The Other Single Use Storage Seal

Once this seal is used to store an object, it can never be used to store a different object. This restriction is identity based, so it is will to accept the same piece of paper after someone writes on it. It sometimes doesn't work with large containers filled with many objects, such as a chest of coins.

Primarily, this is used to track money.
Leprechaun Seal:

Modified storage. Seal an object. Instead of unsealing, it creates a chakra construct copy that lasts for an hour. Can be used multiple times (not simultaneously). The original object cannot be recovered.

Created when J was still young and relatively poor. Store pile of gold, unstore pile of leprechaun gold, buy junk, repeat.
Lightningrod Seal

On first activation consumes any electricity in contact with the seal (ninja wire allowed) for 72 hours or upon reaching the max holfing capacity( increases with Sealing). On second activation releases stored electricity in any conductor in touch. A battery state can be maintained for max of 3 + Sealing level days. After releasing electricity crumbles to dust.

Was intended to be used as a stationary shield against Lightning users. Capacity should be quite low on lower levels of Sealing, otherwise it would be used by fucking everyone.

Ice Road Seal

3 elements Seal. Strict positioning required: main seal in center, Two other on the sides, 1 meter forward from where the Seal aims, parallel to each other and in range from 1 to 5 meters. If positioned wrong fails to activate.

On successful activation covers 100 m2 of surface with flat ice cover. Can mitigate up to 15 cm of unevenness of surface. Length of Ice Road depends on how far away from each other secondary seals were placed (it always creates a rectangle). Ice is -15C on creation and is subject to environment, i. e. lasts until ice is melted naturally. Ice grows on seals, so successful activation destroys all three of them.

The seal was invented to make skating areas for children to play during winter and was hardly used some other way. Combined with Wind jutsus can increase user's speed.

Push-Push Jo-Jo Seal

For a period of 5 + 2 * Sealing level of creator absorbs air at the speed of 5 m/s + environmental Wind speed and outputs it with 1.2 coefficient from the front side of the Seal. The Seal was used to apply a constant pushing force to object like stuck civies' carts and considered useless otherwise. It still required more than one Seal (and/or Wind jutsu applied to the sides) to give some significant force to the push.

Jiraiya's Magneficent Stream Seal

Produces 5 liters of clean drinkable water over a course of 1 minute. Nothing more than a canteen.
Eye of the Beholder Seal

Consists of 5 pieces. 1 piece, called Beholder, is placed wherever and "watches". Other 4 pieces, the Eye, are placed on flat surface to form a square of 0.5m on the side. On activation of the Eye, Beholder start transmitting visual information to the Eye. Maximum range of transmission is 1 meter, and after activation it lasts for 5 + Sealing level minutes.

At some point in time Jiraiya decided that there should be easier way to peek in baths, than using slits in fences. It can also be used to see whats behind the wall of building you're sitting in or watch some secret meetings in the building while you're outside. The Seal does not transmit sound,so the last is only useful if you're really good at lipsreading.
Perfume/stinkbomb seal: emits odor.

Leaping seal: causes uses to zoom a certain distance straight up.
Passive Weight Seal

When activated the seal's weight increases by a set amount. The weight increase can be anywhere between 0 and Sealing-Level kgs.
Jello's Seal Ideas:

All of the below is written with the assumptions that:
  • Novices have TMs of about 10
  • Journeyman have TMs of about 20 (I assume this is what is needed for explosives and storage, and is the skill level most sealers top out at.)
  • Masters, like Kagome, have TMs of about 40.
  • Grandmasters, like Jiraiya or Minato, have TMs of about 60.
If any of the above is wrong, I'd like a heads up so I can fix the numbers below.

Most of the ideas below come from asking myself what I could expect jiraiya to have seen at some point.

Passive Weight Seal (PWS)

This is a basic seal that will just increase its weight when activated. It preserves the velocity of seal when activated. It can be activated many times, but will automatically turn off after 15 minutes or so. Jiraiya lost a bet to Guy a few years back and, instead of running around Konoha on his hands a hundred times, made a set of these seals as payment.

The seal itself gets heavier, not anything it's attached to, you have to carefully mount the seal to avoid it tearing itself or your object apart. In particular, it's the actual ink/engraving/etching that gains the weight. If you activate the seal when it's still wet it can make the ink drip or bleed in ways that will cause failure. If it's on a large piece of paper only the chunk with the actual seal on it will gain the weight, with all the consequences thereof.

Gravity does affect this seal.

Usually, on destruction the seal just stops weighing more than the original material. However, more exotic failure modes are not unheard of.

This is actually a pretty available seal, pretty much every major village will have access to it in some form. It used to be considered a training seal but fell out of favor because it's more difficult than modern storage or explosive seals. It's only really used by the occasional strength focused seal-master as a training aid, but you'll find a copy in every major village, whether it's in a clan's archives or part of the military seal library.

Basic Version:
  • The seal can be activated many times and stays on for a fixed period of time determined by the seal master. It cannot be turned off manually or reactivated while on.
    • Minimum Active Time (min): 5 + Ceil(200 / Sealing-TM)
    • Maximum Active Time (min): 5 + Ceil(200 / Sealing-TM) + (Sealing-TM / 2)
    • There is also some error to when the deactivation occurs. The same seal, on different uses, can deactivate up to a minute early or late. This error exists regardless of the TM of the sealmaster.
  • The maximum amount of weight added is determined by the skill of the seal master.
    • Minimum Weight (kg): 0kg
    • Maximum Weight (kg): (Sealing-TM - 10) / 5
  • The precision of the seal determines how finely the sealmaster can tune the weight of the seal. The more skillful a sealmaster is, the more precisely they can choose the weight of the final seal.
    • Maximum Precision (kg): Sealing-TM / 10
  • Minimum Skill Level (TM): 10
Jiraiya's Version:

At some point Jiraiya decided to play with making his version of the seal more efficient, and ended up with the following changes.
  • Maximum Weight (kg): (Sealing-TM - 20) / 2
  • Maximum Precision (kg): (Sealing-TM - 10) / 5
  • Minimum Skill Level (TM): 20
Inertia Seal

The Inertia Seal is a rare variant of the Passive Weight Seal that only increases the inertial mass of an object and not the gravitational mass.

The Inertia Seal adds mass to the seal itself, along the same lines as the PWS, but that mass is not affected by gravity. This means that an unattached inertia seal will act like an object in microgravity, when you push it, it keeps going straight. An inertia seal attached to a heavier object will make that object less affected by gravity, making it fall more slowly.

The other major side effect is that while an inertia seal is active, it will shift the center of mass of an object towards itself. E.g. one on the end of a rod will shift the center of mass of the rod towards the location of the seal. Mind you, this does not shift the center of mass for gravitational attraction, so gravity will pull the object from off-center, and objects will seem to 'hang' from the inertia seal.

Jiraiya made this when experimenting at some point but couldn't really figure out a use for it. It didn't work so well with weight training, because it shifted how your body moved so unintuitively.

  • The seal can be activated many times and stays on for a fixed period of time determined by the seal master. It cannot be turned on or reactivated while on.
    • Minimum Active Time (min): 5 + Ceil(400 / Sealing-TM)
    • Maximum Active Time (min): 5 + Ceil(400 / Sealing-TM) + (Sealing-TM / 4)
    • There is also some error to when the deactivation occurs. The same seal, on different uses, can deactivate up to a minute early or late. This error exists regardless of the TM of the sealmaster.
  • The maximum amount of weight added is determined by the skill of the seal master.
    • Minimum Weight (kg): 0kg
    • Maximum Weight (kg): (Sealing-TM - 10) / 10
  • The precision of the seal determines how finely the sealmaster can tune the weight of the seal. The more skillful a sealmaster is, the more precisely they can choose the weight of the final seal.
    • Maximum Precision (kg): Sealing-TM / 20
  • Minimum Skill Level (TM): 25

Tick-Tock Seal (TTS)

This seal will make a short chirping noise at regular intervals until it dies. The interval depends on how exactly the seal is infused, and so a more consistent infusion will result in more consistent ticking times. The seal lasts about 1000 chirps and intervals can be as short as 5 seconds or as long 1 minute. The seal can only be activated once and will continue chirping until it is deactivated or dies naturally.

This was a part of an exercise that Jiraiya's sealing tutors used to (try to) humble him. They would challenge him to make a dozen TTSs and activate them all at the same time. Since the intervals on Jiraiya's (hastily infused) seals were significantly different, they would all quickly go out of sync. When the sealing tutors themselves did the same thing, their seals would be in sync until the demonstration ended (usually when the tutors noticed that the chirps were starting to sound longer, but well before multiple chirps were distinguishable.)

Presumably other sealers used the same trick to humble overzealous students everywhere.

There's no real mechanics here, like the chime seal this one only really needs exist as fluff.

Chakra Filter Seal (CFS)

Part of Jiraiya's work on reverse engineering Naruto's Kyuubi Binding seal so that he could maintain it properly after Jiraiya died.

The Chakra Filter Seal is derived from an element of Naruto's seal that filters out much of the harmful Kyuubi chakra from the flow entering Naruto.
  • Incoming chakra is separated into two streams, one containing the chosen type of chakra, and one containing the rest.
    • Easiest to Separate: Yin, Yang
    • Hard: Earth, Fire, Water, Wind, Lightning, Rock
    • Harder: Nature, Medical
    • Hardest: Unnatural Chakra, Biiju Chakra, etc...
  • The filtering is imperfect, the filtered output will contain some impurities, and the unfiltered output will contain some wasted chakra.
    • The purity of the filtering gets better as the Sealmaster's skill improves.
  • Chakra can be pushed into the input side from a users fingers or feet.
  • Output chakra is just pushed out in its raw form, and tends to realize itself in whatever form is most natural for it. (Fire, force, chakra construct water or dust, shadow, light, etc..)
    • This cannot be directly connected to any of the other seal's inputs without designing a specialized seal that contains the functions of both the CFS and the other chakra manipulation seal!
    • The above applies to every other output in a chakra manipulation seal.
  • The seal slowly degrades over time in a way that skilled sealmaster can repair.
I can't really say what the TN should be for any of these chakra manipulation seals, but it should probably be pretty high, on the edge of Kagome's current ability at minimum.

Chakra Dissapation Seal (CDS)

Also derived from Jiraiya's reverse engineering work.
  • Dissipates input chakra as colored light and not as fire, an evil aura, or whatever it would naturally dissapate as.
  • Same as before, input chakra can be pushed from hands or feet.
Chakra Buffer Seal (CBS)

Also derived from Jiraiya's reverse engineering work.
  • Takes a variable stream of input chakra and produces a constant strength output stream (as long as the buffer has enough in it).
  • A full buffer can usually hold about a week's worth chakra output.
  • There is some inefficiency as chakra is lost on input.
  • Input can be pushed into the seal from the hands or feet.
  • The constant output pushes chakra out in its raw form.
  • There is also an overflow output that pushes out excess input chakra when the buffer is full.
Chakra Amplifier Seal (CAS)

Also derived from Jiraiya's reverse engineering work.
  • Has two inputs:
    • A source input, where a large amount of chakra is pushed in.
    • A control input, where a smaller amount of chakra is pushed in.
  • And two outputs:
    • The signal output, which outputs "Control + Min(Source, Gain * Control)" chakra.
    • An overflow output which outputs "Source + Control - Signal" chakra.
  • As with all of these, people can push chakra into an input and the output release chakra in its raw form.
Yes, this is just a transistor, but a transistor that takes 5 minutes of writing and years of skill to construct. It's also pretty useless on its own, and you can't create a multi-seal assembly with them a'la LBFs. Keep in mind all of these seals are small experiments by Jiraiya as he worked to understand how Naruto's Kyuubi seal worked.

Chakra Conversion Seal (CCS)

Jiraiya never actually managed to make a working version of this but he has some notes on the idea and a few experimental failures. This is basically the engine that makes Naruto's seal so powerful, and would be a holy grail of sealing if Jiraiya could have replicated it.
  • Takes an input stream containing various proportions of different chakra types.
  • Produces an output of a specific chakra type by converting chakra not of that type.
    • The input must have some minimal concentration of your chosen type of chakra. (e.g. The input must be at least 10% wind chakra if you want to produce wind chakra.)
    • The output is an absolutely pure flow of the chosen chakra type.
  • Waste is released as appropriately colored light.
  • Somehow seems to be self repairing? Doesn't need maintenance like the other seals or lasts longer than most lifetimes.
The idea and few failed iterations of this one are in Jiraiya's notes, but after a while he got too frustrated and busy trying to go down this path. Especially since the robustness of the corresponding bit of Naruto's seal probably meant he wouldn't actually need to maintain it.
Seal of Authenticity

This seal includes a small blank space where a label can be written. Once stuck on an object or creature and activated, the seal does nothing, but removing or damaging it in any way makes it explode like a small firecracker.
security seal: storage seal that can only be opened by one person set on infusion
Jiraiya's Catalog of Petty Vengeance

A positively astounding collection of creative malice and practical jokes accumulated over years of varied motivations and bored daydreaming. A very large chunk of the family stem from his early discovery of a general mechanism which causes the effect of fairly simple seals to endure on a target even if the seal is removed so long as it remains intact.

Examples include the "Youthful Dampener", which cause the target's mass to increase for a duration. More evil variants are deliberately destabilized to cause the change in mass to swing about randomly, with a note that at the extreme variances this can include brief peaks of negative mass and speculation on investigative avenues for isolating and harnessing that effect which don't appear to have been followed up on.

The "Madness Mechanism" causes a repeated series of stimuli centered around the target. These can be periodic or random. There are existing variants for everything from barely-audible chirps to deafening gong clangs to painful electric shocks. In a particularly vicious set the stimuli are only detectable by the (very confused) target.
I feel like something similar has been posted before, but whatever.

Multiple Objects Storage Seal

Storage Seals that allows you to sequencially input multiple objects up to usual volume and mass limits. Different versions unseal according to different parameters. Sadly, the release interval is not adjustable and varies randomly, usually anywhere between 3sec and 5sec (it seems like Jiraiya tried to fix this but only got to Version E before getting annoyed and 'leaving it for later')):
  • Version A: Unseals all objects simultaneously
  • Version B1: Unseals: 1st object sealed -> 2nd -> ... -> last object sealed
  • Version B2: Unseals: last -> 2nd last -> ... -> first
  • Version C1: Unseals: smallest volume -> 2nd smallest -> .... -> largest
  • Version C2: Unseals: largest volume -> 2nd largest -> ... -> smallest
  • Version D1: Unseals: smallest mass -> 2nd smallest mass -> ... -> largest mass
  • Version D2: Unseals: largest mass -> 2nd largest mass -> ... -> smallest mass
  • Version E: Unseals one random object (that was previously sealed in the storage seal) every time you unseal.

I'm not sure about possible abuses. You could do most of what they do with multiple normal storage seals.

At first thought, Version C and D could be abused to sort/filter things, but since you have to seal every object one at a time you'd be better off doing that by hand.
Maybe for very fine measurements (Is this sand corn larger/heavier than this sand corn?).

Since Version B conserves the order in which you sealed the objects, you could use as memory, maybe. But it seems easier to write things down.

Version E could be used in lottery situations.

Maybe if you managed to get their release interval very low, and the release speed high (macerators), you could make machine guns (or shotgun in the case of Version A).

Normal Storage seals allow an object of volume <= 1m^3. Is this the volume of the smallest cube that would encompass the object you're sealing, xor the volume of air/water/whatever this object displaces?

What scene instantly pops into your head when you read "fun thing that happened in Marked for Death"?
I actually had to spend a while thinking about this one. We already have gaming fanart, and we already have badass combat manga, and there's a bunch of other stuff which is cool but does not lend itself well to visual depiction. The first thing I actually thought of as a defining moment for MfD was the Youthsuit Incident, but that's non-canon, hard to draw interestingly, and also just hell no. After further thought, I considered Through the Haze, the chapter where Minami dies, but that would end up more depressing than celebratory.

Finally, I've ended up with 217b: Life, Bizarre and Spectacular as my pick. A while back, we even ended up finding real-life photos for the outfits, but nothing ultimately came of it.

He wasn't always Leaf's spymaster, though. I find it plausible that a large chunk of his life had enough free time between S-rank missions to focus on Sealing.

True, though as an orphan clanless kid, a lot of his early seal effort time would be just making and selling them, opposed to research. The Gap between those days and S-Rank paymaster days is really the question.

Another seal idea.

Waterproof Storage Seal:
Jiraiya's notes are heavily redacted as to how he came across this seal, but it works just as well in water as out of it. The paper it is written on seems to repel water like a duck's back. Perhaps owing to this feature, this type of storage seal is incapable of storing liquids, even going so far as to store a container but leave the contained liquid unsealed. Jiraiya's notes mention that this was discovered 'the hard way.'

I'm sure that Jiraiya is aware of how long seals take to activate (supplementals are a big deal in high level combat), and so I suspect he made a bunch of very basic seals with alternate activation methods, such as:

  • Pressure-triggered seals
  • Temperature-triggered seals
  • Activation Radius Seals (not to be confused with Activation Relay Seals, these ones activate other seals within a small radius, with notes that increasing its area is possible but likely dangerous for the profession of sealmaster)
  • Sound-triggered seals
  • Light-triggered seals (He gave these out to weapon-using friends of his, with them under oath not to share them. A newly-scribbled note suggests that he was going to give them to Keiko upon return from BotG.)
  • Scent-activated seals (He notes that he has a couple of these that're Usamatsu's Glorious Life-Preserving Purifiers on him at all times, triggered by "unusual" scents. It works on sewage smells, smoke, and some poison gas.)

Some other seals he may have came up with were:

  • Ablative Armor seal: Lasts 24 hours before burning out. Is large, enough to wrap around one's body, but is not especially more complicated than a normal seal; it's just spread out a lot more. When the seal, while activated, is torn or pressure put to it, a blast of air erupts from it that deflects attacks at Armor Value: X.
  • Reflective Armor seal: As above, only it also makes the attacker defend against their own attack at the value they rolled - their aspect bonus (-2x?) + sealmaster AB.
  • Enforce Normal Elemental Physics Seal: All chakra elements within the area of this seal behave as if they were the actual element for the duration of the seal. Flame Aura would light its user on fire, lightning-based taijutsu would electrocute its wielder, fireballs will abruptly vanish due to lack of things to burn, etc. Based on the seal that Jiraiya used in canon to seal Amaterasu.
  • Enforce Normal Chakra Physics: Neither chakra boosting nor substitution works within the radius of this seal. Incidentally, techniques similar to either, do, such as Flying Thunder God or Pantokrator's Hammer. Jiraiya notes that he gave this seal to Minato during the last war; it's a large part of why he didn't get a scratch while killing (Hazou mentally rewrites this as massacring) the rock nin scum.
  • Training Seals: Not really sure where to go with these, but I expect he'd have a seal that sort of mimicks PTJ's effects, and possibly other types of training seals? Maybe something that increases alertness, or makes it easier to learn techniques for increasing your chakra capacity? Not sure *how*, coming up with training stuff is hard.
  • Unbreaking Roots seal: Lasts ~2 rounds. The user cannot move, but gains Armor 4 for the duration that is unpiercable. Hasn't seen much use because who'd use a seal that made you stay still, regardless of its benefits? Based on 5SB.
  • All-Seeing-Eyes seals: Paired seals with maximum distance of 1875.3 feet. (He's tried to make them go further. It just won't take.) The first of the seals activated transmits vision of the space in front of it to the partner seal.
  • Decay Seal: Organic matter rots, inorganic matter crumbles. Slow-acting but works on darn near anything. (This one's credit to @Inferno Vulpix )
  • Grounding Seal: This seal forces chakra electricity that runs through it or the object it's attached to into the ground. Lasts 20 minutes. Greatly lessens effects of Lightning-style techniques and gets rid of their armor-piercing capability.
  • Temperature Normalization Seal: This seal causes equilibrium of temperature over the seal's entire radius. This greatly reduces the damaging effects of fire techniques. This seal does not affect people within its radius.
  • Kleptomaniac Seal: stores a random object from within 100m of the seal. [Credit to IV again]
  • Targetted Kleptomaniac Seal: Stores the object directly in front of it, up to [two zones] away. Does not care if the object is being wielded or worn. Second activation releases the object, as is normal for storage seals. (Jiraiya notes, one time, Naruto got his hands on one of these. Never again.)
  • Matter Eater Seal: Storage seal that ignores the contiguousness of the objects it stores. In effect, it stores a cube of 1 meter in size from directly in front of it regardless of whether the object in question is larger or not. Does not store chakra or people. As normal, activating it a second time releases the seal. Both activations are accompanied by the sound of a vacuum, making it generally inefficient for stealth.
  • Listener's Ear Seal: Similar to All-Seeing-Eyes seals, but instead for hearing. Only goes 300 feet out, though.

I'll probably come up with some more later.

Seal Ideas (yeah, I don't know enough about MfD seal mechanics to do more that describe the results):
Drill Seal
Drills a perfect cylinder of arbitrary radius and height (depth) based on seal design and amount of chakra input. Chakra use goes up with the square of the radius and linearly with the height. Height/depth can be extended by repeated applications of the seal to the same location.

Drill and Pipe
This seal builds upon the Drill seal to line the cylinder to create a perfectly smooth tube of [granite] to line the cylinder. The tube can cross gaps/voids of up to [2M] without breaking. Pipe can be extended by extended by repeated applications of the seal to the same location.

Water-sucker seal
This seal sucks and stores an arbitrary amount of pure H20. J. has notes that say/show he was close to being able to do the same for more complex fluids (red blood cells, alcohols to name a few). He also notes that various iterations of the seal stored water that was somehow heavier than normal water. The chakra required was high with small output.

Water splitter seal
Splits pure water into 2 weird, different gasses, and stores them in separate storage seals. In addition to the obvious applications, T. had found one of the gasses to be very useful in the hospital.

Start the computing revolution
Possible explanation: J. had somehow examined the electronics [Genjitsu magnification technique?] available to the EN and noticed that they all have a few common components. Being a geek, he de-lidded the ICs and found that they entirely made up of a few simple designs (that look somewhat like seals!) repeated over and over. Using chakra control techniques, he was able to send chakra pulses into the ICs with up to 20 pins, and feel what

NB: If chakra doesn't behave like electricity, swap out Chakra for electricity.
AND Gate Seal
This seal has two inputs and one output, the position of which are arbitrary. When chakra is pulsed into one or both of the inputs, the seal performs and AND and outputs as either a chakra pulse or nothing. The time-to-output is perfectly consistent and arbitrarily fast, based on the seal master's level. Still to be done: a way to power the seal from a chakra storage seal to maintain output chakra is when there is no input available to power the seal.

NOT Gate Seal
This seal has one input and one output, the position of which are arbitrary. When chakra is pulsed, the seal suppresses it; when there is no chakra input, the seal outputs a chakra signal (inverts the input). The time-to-output is perfectly consistent and arbitrarily fast, based on the seal master's level. Still to be done: a way to power the seal from a storage seal to maintain output chakra is when there is no input available to power the seal.

NAND Gate Seal
This seal has two inputs and one output, the position of which are arbitrary. When chakra is pulsed into one or both of the inputs, the seal performs and AND and inverts the output of the AND Implies discrete sub-seals of AND and NOT. The time-to-output is perfectly consistent and arbitrarily fast, based on the seal master's level. Still to be done: a way to power the seal from a storage seal to maintain output chakra is when there is no input available to power the seal.

Interconnect Seal
A simple seal that propagates tiny chakra pulses between seals with no measurable loss of chakra. The time-to-output seems to be independent of interconnect length, though this has not been tested.

One Bit Digital Storage Seal (Basic Bistable element)
This seal has one two inputs and two outputs, allowing the storage of one bit of information as a chakra signal. The time-to-output is perfectly consistent and arbitrarily fast, based on the seal master's level. Still to be done: a way to power the seal from a storage seal to maintain output chakra is when there is no input available to power the seal.

Timing clock Seal
Creates a pulse of chakra that outputs a perfectly consistent number pulses-per-second. The number of cycles-per-second can be raised an order of magnitude, based on the seal master's level. Still to be done: a way to power the seal from a storage seal to maintain function.

Rangefinder Seal
Conceptual only Uses the timing clock seal to provide a consistent clock, and an array of OBDSS, NAND and Interconnect Seals to measure how long it takes a targeted chakra pulse to bounce back. Still to do: actually design the circuit and also to output the results in a human-readable way (sound pitch, number of light flashes, or other way to say Hello, World)

These are notes on all of Jiraiya's research into how to seal and integrate a bijuu with there new host

Alright, then.

And we can stop right there, because there kind of aren't any. All of the schizo-tech in Naruto canon was wiped from the setting before the quest started, and the setting's tech level is something akin to 12th century Japan.

Oh god it'll be the evangelion waifu wars all over again

Person 1: Rei Keiko is best girl!

Person 2: That's an interesting way to say Asuka Akane

Person 3: When you guys are done fighting over 14 year olds can we get back to why Misato Mari is best?

Within a couple of seconds of seeing this:

First thought: Yes, that sums up the situation wonderfully.
Second thought: Why are they even arguing about this? Rei may lack personality, but Asuka is plain awful.
Third thought: Can none of these hypothetical people use correct English? The Rei fan is actually missing a word.
Sanity check: if Jiraiya started sealing when he was 15, died at 50, and spent 10% of his time researching new seals, that's 35 * 52 * 0.1 = 182 weeks of sealing time. If it takes an average of 2 weeks to completely research a seal, that's 91 seals. 13 seals in each half-decade of life. Someone else could do a better analysis with more carefully considered estimates, accounting for having senior seal masters available, specialization discounts, dead ends, some seals like skywalkers taking 2 months to research, shadow clones, and a Jiraiya with 80 sealing spending time knocking out a bunch of low level seals at 4+times the speed Hazou could.
Two weeks per seal average?

Just caught up to the latest post (being sick with nothing else to do has some benefits, I suppose). I really love this story and I'm excited to see where things go from here!!
Some thoughts and speculation, in no particular order. Sorry if they've been answered before...
) Hazou's interaction with the Sealing Contract caused him to turn into something not-quite human but not-quite Other. Either this transformation has caused something Other to gain an interest in him, or there was no transformation at all and the Thing caught Notice of him during his mental trip to the Out. The Thing has decided that it likes/is entertained by Hanzou and wants to help, like one would help a favored pet by de-fleaing them. So the Other Thing gets rid of Hanzou's primary stressors (Hyuuga, idiot clan heads, political enemies, mercurial political allies, etc). But the Other Thing is not human, does not think like a human, and will never be anything close to resembling human. So its "friendly helping" is more akin to a god who cures a plague by causing a volcano to sink the continent where the plague runs rampant. (I think that it's called "blue/orange morality," if I recall correctly?) Or perhaps that is Hanzou's doing because the transformation gave him abilities that he can't really understand and is using on an unconscious level?
Though, I admit that it's most likely some conspiracy from the inside (looking at you, Oro) or an attack from the outside (looking at you, Rock).

) Ami is insane and I kinda ship her with Hanzou. She's batshit insane, but entirely functional (if more than a little warped). She seems to have a positive inclination towards him that may or may not have some romantic hues to it? I mean, you don't tease someone you dislike. You tease and joke with someone you like, right? Because if you genuinely dislike someone (unless circumstances force otherwise) you distance yourself from that person as much as possible. So either Ami has some unknown circumstances working against her, or her particular brand of jonin-warpedness is influencing her in this way.

) Kei has realized what Ami probably already has: that she doesn't trust her. So now she must decided to trust Ami or to continue distrusting her. And if Kei chooses the former... well, that might be worth another favor from Ami, right? Or even better/worse, some genuine personal goodwill.

) I'm annoyed by Naruto's blind loyalty to Konoha, though I can understand it. Lifetime of culture and indoctrination working against him there. Though, Hanzou definitely didn't help... I honestly like this more mature Naruto and hope to see him developed further as a character... And, obligatory question, what's his relationship with Hinata here? If there's one at all.

) I really like this more confidant Hinata. She's a clan heiress and not terrible with her bloodline. And I really like the added detail about privacy being different for the Hyuuga. I wonder if they would hold a greater importance over internal privacy rather than external. That is, their true thoughts and feelings are held in higher regard than someone watching them use the restroom. Maybe that's why the Hyuuga are so "stuck up," it's simply that they're easily offended. For example, it could be that "what is your opinion on the institution of marriage" is held more highly than "what're your sizes?"

Edit: Odd question, but whatever happened to Kushina and Minato's sealing notes? Kushina was a Sealing Mistress in canon, right? And Minato refined the FTG Seal, yeah? So does Naruto have those notes? Did the Master of the Bedroom Arts seize them, since Naruto's displayed no fuuinjutsu knowledge and it might've been too dangerous for him to mess around with them? Or were they destroyed in the Kyuubi Massacre? Did that even happen as displayed in canon? Did they destroy their notes themselves? Since they died as young as they did (and were tied up by... you know, War), it might be that the FTG was their only significant creation, but still... possible resource.

How much thread-relevant content do I have to include so that I can get in on this? I dunno, if sealing is all about defining spaces and the rules which define those spaces, how about a Zone of Truth seal?

Ok, good, back to the important topic: the obviously correct answer is that Kaworu is best girl. The only one who actually bothered to actively connect with and understand Shinji, and allow Shinji to understand him in return.

Shall I ping @ChronOblivion? Oops, I already did so.

Rami-chan is the best girl, you heathen.

I guess Kokuou would be its MfD equivalent, at least among the entities we know of. I'm fine with that. It's cute.

JIRAIYA: What am I, a chunin?

My seals should be...extravagant! So eye-catching you can't possibly forget! no i'm not bitter about all the brats i take under my wing totally upstaging me why do you ask

Thousand Heads of the Fire Dragon
When activated, create several moving living dragons of fire that shoot fireballs and at everything within a space specified during infusion; the three variants Jiraiya carries around are a narrow cone (effectively a line for the purposes of the seal), a wide cone in the direction of the activated seal, and a large sphere of destruction. The dragons explode after rampaging for a few minutes or when destroyed.

Grand Maelstrom Gale
When activated, create a sphere of rapidly moving air which fires off jets of sharp hypercompressed air at a variable distance from the seal determined during infusion. The sphere of rapidly moving air should also create huge gusts that make moving, standing, or aiming difficult within a large radius.

Note: Jiraiya never lived down the next one in his cohort, no matter how much he tried to insist there was a purpose. Telling people to piss off only made it worse.
Electrifying Spray of the Yellow Toad
When activated, sprays a yellow mist over a huge radius. The yellow mist does three things: First, it sticks to objects which it touches, and is very difficult to remove. Second, the yellow mist will try to clump together - errant particles of mist will be drawn towards particles stuck to someone's clothes and face, and vice versa. Third, once the yellow mist clumps together in large enough groups, the yellow mist begins shocking whatever it touches - the more of the yellow liquid is clumped together, the stronger the shock.

Heaven's Artillery
A two part seal: a firing seal and terminal guidance seal. When the firing seal is placed on the ground and activated, massive clumps of earth will pack itself tightly and shoot hundreds of meters into the air. Jiraiya will then have a few seconds to throw the terminal guidance seal towards something he really really really wants gone before several tons of rock crashes into the terminal guidance seal.

Second thought: Why are they even arguing about this? Rei may lack personality, but Asuka is plain awful.
Shall I ping @ChronOblivion? Oops, I already did so.

WHO DARES SUMMON ME?

(also, Velorien's taste confirmed trash, Asuka's arc and relationship with Shinji is the most important thematic core of this show for me, this poor girl needs a hug)

*chronoblivion throws a smokeball onto the floor and vanishes back into the ether*
