And Hiashi could ask with a straight face why exactly the relative performance of a bunch of kids in the Exams should affect anyone's vote for the position of Hokage. Well? He's not proposing any of them should be Hokage.

Isn't it a point in Jiraiya's favor that he had the keen eye and great judgment to not only recruit us as deniable assets at first but later also as part of his very own clan? That good judgement sounds like a pretty nice trait to have as the supreme commander of a Village full of individual ninjas.

We...shouldn't. We got 1 after the Swamp Event and 66 between us and ISC, assuming we took everyone else's word-halves. 67 total. IDK.

Fair point, I was focused on the impression from the other clans.
Youre not accounting for the likelihood that some of the others had extra on them when we robbed them blind.

Why would they bring them with them, instead of putting them in the barracks? They won't be stolen since something something not allowed something something proctor/eliminated village-nin guards...

To add to that: Keiko speculated that the distribution of seals in the second event would be concentrated on the stronger teams. I see no reason why the same wouldn't be true for word halves through out the whole exam period.

Some of them are idiots? :V

I mean, the whole reason not to use lethal traps was based on that assumption so the turn-around of assuming the same thing here is fair, right?

OOC it would be nice to see Hinata in the tournament, because high level punching, but I don't know if IC it makes a lot of sense for Hazo to help out much. Plus, they explicitly said they don't want to cooperate any further after last event.
Kinda all the more reason to help them out, no? I'm inclined to reinforce the public perception of Hazou as a graceful victor with a predilection toward cooperation.

TBH we stomped things so bad it might well make sense to avoid the tourney. Our level of domination is probably unprecedented; if there was a precedent the rules would have accounted for it.
  • Hazō's was the single most important team─normally by a large margin─in every single round, even the ones we got screwed on,
    1. Night light seals: we carried the whole group, and they all know we gave up an easy win for it,
    2. Totally Legal Merchandising: we got scammed half our points, and Mist knows it, yet we still won,
    3. Where's Wally: not everyone knows it, but we disqualified a quarter of the contestants,
    4. Just a normal day at T&I: we wiped the map, and, uh,
    5. Word-half minigame: we wiped the map.
  • we were frequently outright selfless, and always open to cooperation, which is a trend that seems to be continuing with word-halves,
  • we've very likely gotten the Hokage permanently elected,
  • we helped─accidentally, maybe, but still helped─getting major economic deals signed,
  • we got a Neji minion,
  • we have the mystery behind being the Hokage's impossibly-adopted kids, and
  • many of the people whose opinions we care about know we did this after revolutionizing warfare.
Oh, and we got revenge on a teacher.

What would even be the point of going all-in with the tourney? It's surely not like we're going to fail to be chūnin, we will no longer need to worry about getting Jiraiya elected (regardless of how it turns out), and none of our major goals are particularly predicated on being typical ninja. The risks of putting eggs in the tourney basket are that we have a fresh new chance to mess up or damage our legend (even winning unimpressively would be a downgrade), and that outside of a team it's far harder for us to stomp as hard without revealing secrets.

*shrug*

At least one idiot etc etc

As far as I am aware, there was never an official statement that word halves were worth points, nor if they are, how many points each word half might be worth. Did I miss it?

On the other hand, Jiraiya failed in his promise to track down and retrieve Naruto, which was half of his justification for being Hokage.

And Hiashi could ask with a straight face why exactly the relative performance of a bunch of kids in the Exams should affect anyone's vote for the position of Hokage. Well? He's not proposing any of them should be Hokage.

Which just leaves good trade agreements.
Eh. You could plausibly argue that the timing of the chunin exams was a significant interference in that given the deadline. That would probably buy him another month.

Devils Advocate: What has Hiashi done recently to benefit the village again?

Well this would be Hiashi's argument remember.

If the team had failed, it would have been a sign of Jiraiya's bad judgment. If the team succeeds he can be all, "Oh come on, this is serious bizness; nobody should let some exam stuff affect their vote."

Just saying, it's not a lock.

Here's an argument against. Team Kurenai are strong opponents any of whom could potentially beat Hazou, Noburi, or Keiko if they show up with a bullshit hole card from their clans after a month away training.

Would feel pretty dumb if Hazou helps the opponent who ultimately defeats him get into the tournament.

It's unfortunate that the pointless speech we made taints our selfless image, but nothing we can do about that now.

Definitely possible. Still doesn't change that, without their own halves, said teams are disqualified from event 1 and their stash is worthless.

Because Jiraiya's Hokage-ship is still predicated on us doing well in the tournament?

When was this stated?

Who else can track down and retrieve Naruto?

The whole of point of winning the exam is to keep the wolves at bay. It's a show of strength.

It appeared that the Chūnin exam is serious business despite merely being a peaceful war game.

...I don't really think they're strong opponents. Team Gai would have been strong opponents, but Team Kurenai is a year behind them and not nearly talented enough to make up the difference.

Because Jiraiya's Hokage-ship is still predicated on us doing well in the tournament?
I thought that politicking was happening in the month-long gap. Either way it doesn't make sense for people to argue that they skipped the tourney and therefore can't be that good, or whatever. It's already clear they are good ninja.

Why, uh... why would we skip the tournament when we've already revealed most of our tricks?

Team Kurenai is better than your average genin but since we're doing closer to Real Time updates than a full timeskip we can likely engineer counters by the time the tournament takes place.

Its the other yahoos and ISC im worried about.

No, no, no.

We can use this.

We are the terrifying killers trained in ninja!North Korea with all the ruthlessness that entails. Heartless. Soulless. Frustrated at our inability to murder other children.

With... just... a... hint of goodness shining through that ninja!North Korea couldn't quite stamp out of us.

Basically, you know how villains who struggle to not be seduced to the side of good are always fan favourites? We are that.

That would require long term interaction with these people to use. We will not have that. They will go home, lick their wounds, and remember us for the villains we portrayed ourselves to be.

It occurs to me that the monkey clan contract is likely within Leaf without a summoner. If the Sarutobi haven't passed it along yet, Jiraiya might prevail upon them to try the Reverse Summoner trick.

I really want to see an Interlude where we just cycle through that speech from six different charactsrs POV by the way.

Shin, Hinata, Ino, Shikamaru at the very least.

Its the other yahoos and ISC im worried about.

Well to be fair, this is not ISC's first Chunin exams so we are the only Leaf rookies that actually got this far.

And no, I am not kidding. One of the earlier chapters actually heavily implies ISC participated in the Leaf hosted exams earlier even though now they act like it is their first one.
