A black-clad assassin leaps out and stabs you in the neck for eighty-seven damage, plus poison!

...Well played.

"Rocks fall, everyone dies!" Noburi cried, throwing his hands in the air in exasperation.

"But my Tunic of Greater Stoneform makes me impervious to--"

"Yes, but would they go pretty damn far for it?" Jiraiya asked, a sly grin on his face.

Hazō blushed. "Sir—"

Jiraiya waved him silent. "Sorry, sorry. I know this whole situation has to be stressful for you, and I shouldn't tease you. You're safe, I promise. I keep my deals and the deal I have with you guys is a good one. If anyone touches you I will literally rip his arms off and feed him to my Toads."

Now that's just downright sadistic. But still, good to know Jiraiya is serious about this.

XP AWARD: 2

(This update covered about 48 hours.)

Yeeouch. *rubs rear*

So, what can we do that is more active? Is Jiraiya still wanting us to stay put, or do we more or less have freedom of movement within Leaf?

We should definitely seek out our previous contacts if possible. Definitely more sparring with Rock Lee. Training in general with Gai's or Asuma's team would probably be a good use of time.

Can we just, like, invite them all to eat out and pay for it? We have the money, and it could curry some goodwill and also be a good opportunity to get information. ...Maybe suggest ramen and leave a couple seats open.

We were told that we can't basically go anywhere.

It's reaction time:

"Don't sweat it. Ocelot isn't fond of missing-nin and she's feeling a little conflicted about you guys. Don't worry, though; she's got the highest loyalty index of any ANBU agent in the past five years, so I'm not worried about her doing anything aside from maybe looming a little bit."

Leaf assigns people loyalty indices? I wonder how they calculate those and what else gets assigned a numerical value. We should look into this. If there is a readily available source of tactical information about people's character in Leaf we could use that in all of our upcoming meet and greets.

"Wow. Young kid, sitting there looking all nervous and telling me that he had a few things I should know? For a moment I was looking for blond hair, but then you called me 'sir'. Anyway, what was it?"

And I'm left wondering if he was talking about the 4th, Naruto, or some other blond/e. Must not assume, must not assume, must not...

"Yessir. I mean no, sir. I mean it doesn't breed true, sir."

Gah, does this mean Hazou doesn't know about his specific chances until he starts trying to have his own kids?

If not, science demands we figure this out...

...after an appropriate time-skip.

"Yes, but would they go pretty damn far for it?"

Well, if he's teasing us about our fuck-up's hopefully he isn't holding any grudges against us. We did lose him a bit of political capital, but it seems we are back in his good graces.

the question of whether to be adopted or married is an interesting one.

Only Keiko would consider such a personal, life changing decision with such clinical detachment naturally.

Logical Keiko is best Keiko.

...we need some fan art of Keiko dressed as Spock, Noburi as Bones, and Hazou as Kirk, immediately. It's just too perfect.

Mari can be Uhura and Kagome can be Scotty too.

She paused, and an unholy light kindled behind her eyes. "Plus, they have that library."

I retract my previous statement: book-loving Keiko is best Keiko. This girl has her priorities straight even if she personally isn't. :p

I have not yet made my decision. I will need more information

THE VOICE OF REASON STRIKES AGAIN!

We must give Keiko all of the information she desires. The more we give her, the more-informed of a decision she can make.

Moar info gathering. MOAR!

My prediction for this chapter was wrong:

I thought Kurosawa Hana, a trained assassin(a complete guess), would try to escape Mist.

Active things we can do:
  • Go out as individuals to do stuff
  • Do seal experiments
  • Do innovation experiments
  • Train
  • Disregard Akane's father and try to send her covert messanges. Like a ninja or something
  • Go be a bad influence on Ino
  • Send Noburi to try to get Neji on our side
  • Go make friends with merchant council people
  • Find out about the Capybara scroll mission
  • Plan a Hana heist for Leaf to execute
  • Invite the friends from our last Leaf stay for a rematch board game
  • Invite literally anyone to our place to talk with or do things with
  • Try to make it up to the librarian
  • Try to get Noburi his internship back
We were told that we can't basically go anywhere.
We were told we shouldn't go anywhere as a group. We can go places on our own (or send individual genin or Mari out) with ANBU guards.

Well, at least we have the chance to better our approach with Shikaku. I would strongly recommend we go with the CCnJ approach with him. He's of a clan that would appreciate such frankness in addition to any CBAs we could put up for him. Additionally, I can almost guarantee he knows about CCnJ from Shikamaru, and he will take the fact that we're willing to do use it with him as a sign of respect, as such.

I don't know why we're considering social seals. Social seals already exist. They're little pieces of paper with pictures of dead kage on them. Collect enough and people will do whatever you want.

Dat xp gain tho...

Definitely one of those who had the impression we'd been told to sit still and stay quiet until the clan thing was settled, so if we're meant to be more active for a few updates worth... we'd already made plans for the Nara meeting and that isn't active anyways, even npcs said a scene has to happen to move forward on that.

So, can we set up playdates with Team Asuma/Gai ? Suspect we're meant to be henged even if we can go out atm so not like we can just drop in at the flower shop or something more casual. But getting Shikamaru and possibly Ino's opinion on things before the Nara and other clan meets seems pretty optimal, even just gauging their reaction to our return /time gone and hinting at sticking around.

We probably want Mari-sensei or Jiraiya to go with Keiko when they meet the Nara compound for marriage/adoption negotiation.

Other than that, we need to keep Kagome-sensei calm, as always.

Come to think of it: Mari-sensei as clan matriarch will become a fact for Pandā. He was right all along!

Hmm, we should keep a research journal, just somewhere to write our ideas that we keep somewhere Jiraiya can get to. We can add interesting ideas to it with action plans, and J can go read it at his leisure.

It's the sort of thing where he can go "NO NO NO NO NO BAD IDEA" before we get around to a research task or actively push us towards a good idea.

[X] Action Plan : Meet and Greet

@QMs: Do as many of the scenes as you want in whatever order. They're going to be listed in priority, and we'd appreciate if you try to do things of higher priority first.

Each scene is split into Preparation and Action sections. Prep sections have things we should do before the action to lay the groundwork, and make sure the action is a good idea, these can probably be done in the background. Action sections are the fun stuff that people want to see.

Goals :
  • Don't do anything stupid.
  • Strengthen our relationships with the clan heirs.
  • Give us an opportunity to practice our skills.
  • Have some other fun.
Scenes :

Shadowing the Librarian
  • Check with Inoue and Jiraiya (Ideally in that order) if the following is feasible and if it's a good idea.
    • If they veto it, don't do the action.
    • If they tweak the plan then listen to them.
  • Check with Keiko if this is a stupid idea, do what she says.
  • See if we can get Hazou whatever these people use instead of white boards (they're swap space for your brain! they make every intellectual task go better) also slide rules or abaci.
  • Work with Keiko to gather data for our hypothesis on scorch squads
    • Contingency: Stick to things you can get without leaving the house and would be considered public.
    • Agricultural, population, and merchant data seems particularly important.
    • See if there's places (like near Tea or in some crevice somewhere?) where we'd expect to see no scorch squads, check if there's a marked difference in survival rates between there and places where we'd expect to see them (near the border?)
    • See if there's any pattern of villages going missing.
    • Show your working.
  • Work with Keiko on the general collapse hypothesis.
    • Contingency: Stick to things you can get without leaving the house and would be considered public.
    • Look at birth and death rates, and the factors influencing them.
    • Attempt to develop a model for these rates.
    • Figure out whether it points to a resource spiral, the slow death of humanity, or any other existential crisis.
    • Try to see if you can't get a gross estimate of what would happen with no upcoming war, an upcoming war without skywalkers. Be very precise in your methodology, so that someone with better numbers can run along and plug them in.
    • See if you can get a gross estimate of what would happen with Civilian Usable Storage Scrolls, Civilian usable macerators, and Civilian Usable Airships (Base the design on the hot air things, assume they require significant sealing to manufacture, some to maintain, and none to operate. Will it help that they can fly over the chakra beasts and stuff?)
    • Show your working.
  • If it looks as if both hypotheses are wrong, then don't invite Shikamaru over.
  • See if you can't get Shikamaru over for a visit.
    • Option : Set up a board game night with Team Sarutobi ask Shikamaru to come early or stay late?
  • When you get a chance present what evidence you've gathered.
    • Hazou's general attitude/goals: (Not anything we need him to say directly)
      • If we're right then we expect you or someone in the Nara to know and care.
      • If we're wrong then we want to know, so we don't waste our time fixing a problem that doesn't exist.
      • We have respect for the Nara clan's judgment and Shikamaru's in particular.
      • If these are actual problems, we figure that the Nara are the people to coordinate with, we will work to keep this from happening. We like humanity, like 60% of our friends are human.
      • If Shikamaru has any critiques on methodology, we want to know so we can do it better next time.
      • Our analyses are likely inaccurate due to lack of access to data and time, but we'd welcome further accuracy insight.
    • Set the groundwork for the rest of the conversation but let Keiko take the lead in explaining what you found.
    • When talking about the Skywalkers/Civilian Usable Stuff:
      • Try to drop your iron nerve so that Shikamaru can read you to the best of his ability, be truthful.
      • With CCnJ say something to the effect of :
        • Yes, I am trying to make our existence seem useful so that your clan is less likely to object to Jiraiya adopting us.
        • But we also genuinely believe that this is important and figure the Nara have plans somewhere to deal with this.
        • We would like to assist, or at the very least not step on your toes with our own work.
    • We really want to know if we're barking up the wrong tree with the collapse and scorch squad stuff.

CTF isn't usually this disorienting.
  • Talk with Inoue and see if she would be interested in doing this, the main idea is to help us see if we can get practice with a combat genjitsu doctrine, as well as team tactics.
    • We're going to try to make it less obvious that that's our goal, but people will probably figure it out.
  • Talk with Inoue and Jiraiya to see if this is a bad idea, also would it be problematic to associate with Gai in this way?
  • Make sure we can get a sufficiently secluded/forested training area for this.
  • Figure out what abilities we want to use and which to keep hidden ahead of time.
  • Invite Team Gai over for some games and training.
  • Use even mixed teams that try to shuffle combinations of the kids.
  • Use whatever standard of acceptable force is for tactics-focused, friendly training games.
  • Games/Exercises:
    • Inoue is bad for the stomach.
      • Basically CTF, with a few tweaks.
      • Inoue's her own team and her goal is to make sure neither team captures a flag. She is only allowed to use genjitsu.
      • Inoue is fair game for the kids if they feel the need to punch her.
      • Idea is to see what sort of tactics can work with fast, disorienting genjitsu that is explicitly not trying to trick. We want to see if Inoue can keep everyone from achieving any goal, and if there's anything that the kids can do to make this hard for her.
    • Gai is the worst client.
      • Gai gets to be the client, one team of three is trying to get him with red paint (or green if he prefers) the other is trying to keep his clothes gleaming in the teeth-light.
      • Gai is to pretend to be a horrible client for protection duty, not willing to listen to advice, entirely oblivious to what's happening around him, and generally kinda annoying.
      • I mostly want to see Gai get to troll, but this is also meant to help us get better at keeping people safe in actively adverse conditions.

TODO: One more scene where we do useful shit. Anyone have ideas?

[X] Action Plan : Meet and Greet

Some issues but basically in a good direction. Will have more feedback later.

Sometimes there isn't a way to sit still and be quiet while being real smart and proactive about it. Could be that we're looking at a choice between doing the smart thing, and doing the intense, fun (at least for QM) XP-generating thing.

If that's the case, the choice is fairly obvious.

"Rocks fall, everyone dies!" Noburi cried, throwing his hands in the air in exasperation.

"I said you should make him use a pregenerated character," Mari-sensei told him in amusement.

Noburi glared at her. "More rocks fall!"
In all fairness, Noburi seemed to be worse. Not only was he attempting to railroad a party death, he was arbitrarily adding equipment, skills and spells to make it happen. At the end of the day, he was doing the exact same thing except worse.

[X] Action Plan : Meet and Greet

Short plans are better plans right now. This covers what I want to happen well enough. Will think of ways to refine what is there and post suggestions soon.
