You're misreading it. Did you see the 'giving away' part? Or the bit earlier about finding out what Ami thinks? The goal is to find out about Ami's politics (he doesn't care about her favorite color or whatever) and not give away anything she can use against Jiraiya. It is not a promise not to find out anything political about Ami, it's a promise not to give Ami any political ammunition.
I don't think we are reading the same quote, then.

"It's a prime opportunity to find out more about what she's like and what she thinks, and to get her thinking more positively about the Gōketsu."
In this case, he does care about her favorite color. Or really, the reason for choosing a specific color, the thought process behind this choice.
The point is simple friendly chatter, to build up positive rapport and basic knowledge about her private self.

"I can stay completely away from anything OPSEC-sensitive or political so she can't probe me. You can't lose if you don't play the game."
The only way he's not going to give away political information is by not going into political topics.
Conversations are give-and-take, after all- he starts asking politics, he'll have to answer politics. And Ami's on whole other level in taking what she wants from those exchanges.

It's a promise not to discuss politics because Hazou is completely incapable of judging what political ammunition would look like in the current context, nor what he might slip without even noticing while being soft-interrogated, alone, by the full undivided attention a Kage-level faction leader who also happens to be a walking inference engine. J just wants the lightest first meeting possible to get a passive, surface-level read on her with a potential stretch goal of her enjoying herself enough to have a second.

Again, the Elemental Nations are currently in a situation where a single wrong word in this meeting could burn the entire world.

I seem to recall @eaglejarl claiming to have figured out a way for us to beat Keiko during this fight, and am now *really* curious what it was :p (but I can't find the post so maybe misremembering)

Guess you got overruled, then? Wish I'd learned of it so I could change the plan :(
Yeah, it hadn't actually been discussed and the decisions weren't made until shortly before the update was written. Sorry. :<

If it helps, it didn't factor into the update. Also, we're looking at ways to reconcile previously-shown insurances of hands sticking up. Current discussion is to have a roll, and we simply assume that he made the roll those previous times. That's still tentative, though.

This is story-only reminder bot gently reminding you about story-only threads:

ETA: alas, it seems unicode robot face (U+1F916) does not work here
Not forgotten, but thanks for the reminder. During the work day my browsers are locked out of the thread. If you see me reading/posting (eg now) then I'm on my phone during a tea break or such. Posting the update requires uploading from my laptop to Google Docs, then copy/paste to the thread. It's enough of a bother that I figured I'd leave it for tonight.

Even though I am glad Hazou actually lost the way he did, I'd be interested in that as well if it doesn't give out too much OOC information

Agh, that's a shame. I'd been a bit worried since the point of Hazou popping up in Round 2 (of my plan, not the update) was to get Keiko's location and to trigger Living Roots onto it so that we'd be guaranteed to keep track of her.

Suggestion: Maintaining the jutsu when you come up for air requires concentration. Popping up your head just enough to see and hear what's going on, and maybe use a seal, while in a relatively calm situation (like when we were under the porch) is easy and has a low difficulty roll. Doing it in mid-combat? Much harder. Also, having more of your body exposed could make things harder as well.

Seems reasonable, though I'd point out that the "use a seal" part was during a combat simulation (spar or no).

He can talk about his personal uplift ideas to manage the cross exam. It's not Jiraiya's politics or any of the actually sensitive issues at home right now, like the inter-clan rivalry for the hat that's putting Jiraiya under pressure at home. (Although Mist probably already knows the broad strokes of that, if not all the specifics. They'd be pretty incompetent if they didn't have any spies in Leaf making them aware of the overall political situation, and I don't think they're incompetent.) It would also be bad to mention the cold stone killers thing or the murder of everyone on the ship or Naruto's abduction, but I don't think there's any risk of Hazou mentioning any of those or speaking to anything sufficiently close to one of them that it could lead to a logical inference of the truth. Mentioning Mari's condition might not be good either, but probably not disasterous.

Yeah, no. The risk here is giving Ami something her faction can use as greater leverage against Jiraiya than they already have (honestly unlikely) for better terms on a deal, nothing's going to start a war over lunch. I think Hazou is actually mostly ignorant of the sorts of political things that could be useful to someone like Ami or Ren for planning. He doesn't know a lot of detail about Leaf politics or its players, or the details of political negotiations that Jiraiya has been engaged in internally, or much of what Jiraiya is considering and planning. Jiraiya is actually pretty good at keeping his cards close to his chest at home, that one worst case scenario he mentioned with the 'peace talks fail, Mist goes all organized rape camps' speech being a notable exception.

Also, haven't done one of these in a while and there are still more quotes to go through!

The people stood like corn in the high fields and listened to the Master. As the reaper's blade scythed them all, the Master fell silent. The lesson would be learned by others.

Two main problems with that- related topics and inferences.

-By related topics I mean out-of-the-blue questions that are none the less fitting given current thread of conversation.
Stuff like Uplift ideals => what's your clan patriarch's opinion on it? how about the rest of the clan?
All it takes is for her to ask the wrong question at the right time and note the flinch of pause in conversation too see that there's something that Hazou's hiding.
Sure, there are spies and they know the basics at least. Doesn't mean that additional source of info to cross-reference won't be useful for them.

-By inference I mean the terryfying power of Mori's mind. You give her a lead, she's gonna follow it.
For every subtle hint you give her, she'd get five probable answers and three further leads to pursue.
Mari's condition could be linked to Hana's resending back to Mist, and further show a general psychological vulnerability of the clan- easier to pressure their individual members, if not Jiraiya himself.

Hazou is going to bleed info whatever path he takes. His main character flaw is his open mouth.
By choosing to avoid political topics, he avoids giving an opening towards more crucial information.

Edit: Though... Uplift ideals are probably at the edge of fair game. It's important to talk about it, after all.
Just wanted to make a point about not-so-obvious traps we could be falling into.

Jiraiya doesn't know what her faction even wants. Is getting Mist a better deal on the alliance their goal? If so, why are they screwing with the negotiations by interposing themselves directly instead of just working with the Mizukage who already wants the same thing?

What if they want the cover of a breeding program to implement or provide cover for the revelation of an existent eugenics program? What if they've decided that Mist should violently purge the hardliners and fully integrate with Leaf? What if they don't care what happens between Mist and Leaf, but need to stir up trouble to cover their breaking off with a third of Mist to go do their own thing? What if they've signed a deal with Hiashi where he gets the hat in exchange for their either torpedoing any agreement until Jiraiya loses or shaping it such that Hiashi can be the one to take credit for it? What if they don't care about Mist, Leaf, or the deal at all and the only thing they are trying to do is distract and tie down most of Leaf's military and administrative elite in a foreign capital while their clan agents back in Leaf steal skywalker examples so they can trade them to Lightning in exchange for being made as rich and powerful as gods? What if they're working for Akatsuki and just want to take this opportunity to suss out information on how close anybody is to locating the missing jinchuuriki?

If you don't know what somebody's goals are you can't predict what they are going to find a useful tool in pursuing them. This faction could be composed of moon goblins for all anybody knows what they are going to do.

Avoiding politics is just the absolute bare minimum policy. For all we know an offhand comment on Kagome's cooking will be enough for her to finish putting together that he's from a lost Whirlpool exclave hiding in the drained remains of the primordial sea beneath the Sichuan plateau.

This whole meeting is a bad idea, but we can at least try to steer away from the most apparent failure modes.

  • Make a fancy calligraphy drawing of ^_^
  • Wear nice clothes, but not formalwear.
  • Give Ami the ^_^ calligraphy as a gift. It was so funny we had to draw it!
  • Chatting with Ami:
    • KEEP OPSEC. She's better than you at this game so be careful!
    • Uplift! Ami might not think we can change the world, but we may nonetheless find a kindred spirit.
    • Sanitized stories of our missing-nin adventures.
    • Chat about Leaf and Mist, their similarities and differences. Ask for Ami's hand in marriage.
  • If Ami brings Keiko up, stay away from any sensitive topics (you want to respect Keiko's privacy).
  • If Ami wants us to commit to anything, tell her we'll run it past our Clan Head and get back to her before we leave Mist.

This kind of straddles the line between serious and not-serious. I wouldn't be upset if it won, but it's also here to prompt better planmakers into fixing the mistakes I've no doubt made here so they get their plans out sooner. Cheerio!

I don't know what it should do, and I don't know what it should cost, but can we get a disguise stunt named "Mari's Makeup Lessons." with narrative justification that Mari taught Hazou extensive usage of a variety of cosmetics and similar products?

It would be hilarious!

Bwahahahaha!

I've had my suspicions that this is a possibility too. The strongest argument against it that I can think of is that Ren probably wouldn't be taken in by clever deceptions if Ami couldn't actually furnish anyone important supporting her.

-By related topics I mean out-of-the-blue questions that are none the less fitting given current thread of conversation.
Stuff like Uplift ideals => what's your clan patriarch's opinion on it? how about the rest of the clan?

There are ways to handle that stuff. Shrug and say Hazou doesn't know and that Jiraiya is deeply inscrutable. Or tell her something plainly absurd, like that Hazou doesn't know because Jiraiya gets all of his advice from a very wise stuffed kitten that Keiko gave him and the kitten never saw fit to tell Hazou anything. That'd be hilarious.

Or more seriously, a perfectly valid approach is to tell the damn truth; 'Perhaps we could discuss that later, but I'm trying to get a feel for what you want without giving you any ammunition right now.' That's a respectable answer that shows he respects Ami's competence. It's important to never lie unless you've first asked yourself 'does telling the truth here actually seriously hurt me no matter how I do it?' and found the answer to be yes.

I think I'll add some suggested ways to deal with questions we're not comfortable answering to the plan I put together.

As for inferences Ami could make from non-answers, they may not be as helpful as you're thinking. Like, telling the absurd kitten story says 'He's obviously lying and doesn't want me to know so he's yanking my chain', but...what does that get Ami, really? It tells her Hazou doesn't want to give her detailed knowledge she can use for planning, but of course Hazou doesn't want to do that. He's not an actual idiot. He'd need to talk about stuff he has no reason to talk about to give Ami inferential connections to the Really Bad Topics I highlighted earlier.

Avoiding politics is just the absolute bare minimum policy. For all we know an offhand comment on Kagome's cooking will be enough for her to finish putting together that he's from a lost Whirlpool exclave hiding in the drained remains of the primordial sea beneath the Schezwan plateau.

This whole meeting is a bad idea, but we can at least try to steer away from the most apparent failure modes.
Ohhhh, that's why you're being so over-dramatic, you don't like the plan and want to support the closest version to not doing it at all that you can get.

The whole point of this exercise is to find out about Ami's political goals. Not talking about politics isn't gonna make that happen. Like it or not, we've gotta ask Ami about her politics or this whole exercise is a pointless waste of time. Rest assured that your estimation of the actual risks here is grossly overinflated. Asking 'So what do you want in the current political situation?' isn't going to trigger the apocalypse. It's safe to take off the drama queen hat.

Sanitized stories of our missing-nin adventures.
I'm actually somewhat worried that sanitized stories are the sort of talking around a missing truth situation that gives rich ground for Mori inference drawing. Maybe another safer topic? Or just stick with uplift and unusual training techniques.

As the result of collaboration between @Roomba and me, I present you:

[x] Ami Plan: One Assuredly Containing No Disastrous Oversights
Wordcount: 499.
  • Take time to prepare. Consider drawing a concept map (covertly; destroy it afterwards).
  • Thoughts:
    • Keiko trusted Ami unquestioningly. Mari stated Ami wouldn't reject her. Yet, Ami did that the moment they meet, and as the result Keiko lost her only connection to the Mori.
      • Optimistic speculation: Ami did that to protect Keiko from clan elders.
      • Don't share this thought with anyone.
    • Talking with Ami after your speech could be seen as probing for support.
    • Note: Ami wouldn't know your goals at first.
  • Sanity-check everything below with Jiraiya.
  • Goals:
    • Build initial rapport.
    • Actually discuss listed topics.
  • Formalities:
    • Clothes: casual; colours: politically neutral.
    • Gift: a "^_^"-stamp seal (commission from a woodworker (compensate for rush)).
    • Demeanour: diplomatic but friendly, slightly joking where appropriate.
  • Guidelines:
    • Precommitments (overriding priority):
      • Avoid on-the-spot commitments, however small.
      • Under no circumstances talk about OPSEC-sensitive topics. Ami may make it sound like a good idea, but past!you knows better.
      • Don't proactively bring up topics of uncertain confidentiality (breeding programs, scorch squads, Jiraiya's internal politics...).
    • Frankness:
      • You won't be able to deceive her, so don't play games. Unless this plan states otherwise, be honest about your plans and goals for this meeting — even if it's embarrassing.
      • Don't be rude, though.
    • Collectedness:
      • Converse at a deliberate pace. Don't get caught up, don't knee-jerk.
      • Actively work to retain mental balance.
        • Remember meeting Shikaku, and Gisuji.
        • Assume she is scarily well-informed.
      • Be mindful of words and gestures. Observe, memorize.
  • Topics:
    • Icebreakers:
      • Suggest dining on the ceiling/wall (check viability beforehand).
      • Trade unconventional personal questions. E. g., "what are you proud of, but never have an excuse to discuss?".
      • At some point, explain CCnJ.
    • "Social philosophy". (Avoid the particulars of political situation; stay abstract.)
      • Uplift: You've stated your position publicly. What are Ami's thoughts?
      • Existential threats:
        • Global wars are devastating. Is lasting peace possible?
          • As Chuunin Exams show, diplomacy could be effective.
        • Civilization may be gradually declining even in "peacetime", due to chakra-beasts destroying civilian villages. Can we reverse the trend? Improve on the status quo?
    • "Family".
      • To make a lasting impact, one needs to be efficient — which sometimes means ruthlessly sacrificing personal attachments and innocents for power, detachedly thinking of your loved ones as resources, or making decisions for them that would go against their wishes.
        • Is there a balance to be struck, between efficiency and humanity?
      • Don't bring Keiko up. If Ami does, suggest postponing the topic.
        • Keiko is unaware of this meeting, so you're uncomfortable discussing her.
  • Contingencies:
    • If put off-balance: keep your cool, mentally distance yourself.
      • Be prepared for deliberate attempts to rile you up (example: by subtly insulting Keiko, or referring to Hana's exile, in order to sell a deception). Don't let anger control you.
    • End meeting ASAP if Ami...
      • ... persistently pursues a crucial OPSEC topic.
      • ... invites a third party over.
  • If it went well:
    • Establish a scheme to confirm integrity of letters for inter-village correspondence (Example: "nth letter of every sentence follows a pattern").
    • Hand her a post-interaction survey. Collect it next time.

  • Yes, the plan is over 400 words. I think it's entirely warranted, though.
  • Yes, eating on the ceiling is necessary. We took the "floor is lava" idea from her in the first place, so we know it's the kind of bizarreness she appreciates. It's a non-manipulative way of building rapport, which is useful. Similar with the post-interaction survey.
  • Making Hazou start doubting the truth value of Ami/Keiko falling-out is important for controlling his perception of her. Right now, he mostly sees her as "Keiko's sister who rejected her", and albeit he resolved to not judge her too quickly, he doesn't have a positive or even neutral image of her either. We don't want him getting angry at her and crashing the meeting, so let's inject doubt.
  • Bringing up Keiko, though, is unwise for several reasons, varying from "it's disrespectful" to "Ami will focus on manipulating Hazou to strengthen her deception" to "Ami will arrange for Hazou to be thrown out of Mist to cover up the OPSEC breach". So let's not.
  • Talking about Uplift, on the other hand, is pretty much unavoidable, after Hazou's pre-battle speech.
  • Which would segue into the "family" topic, which I think Ami would find interesting, since both she and her mentor (Ryugamine) struggled with it. And it's another point of commonality between her and Hazou.
  • I think we need more contingencies, though. E. g., what if Akatsuki attacks? What if the Mori Voice assumes direct control? What if Zabuza intercepts Hazou on the way to the restaurant, and invites him to his tea party? Dangerous.

Big plan, many words.
Still, considering who we are talking with, it's our best bet at not making fools out of ourselves.
The ship is worth it.

She took a brief moment to be amused at the recollection of her discussion with Pandā. She had explained that his job was to be bait, that Hazō would likely attack him, and that being forcibly dispelled would be painful.
I'm not comfortable with Hazō dispelling Pandā. Seems to me we're just burning yet more goodwill on a pointless fight.
matching the painting the poncho
Typo?
Kei scrambled up into the slit on the wall, pulling her stone-pattern camo poncho out of the storage scroll on her belt as she went. She had been out last night, matching the painting the poncho in a thin layer of pitch and pouring sand and tiny pebbles over it so that it would blend in with the precise strata of this spot. It had been a cold and nervous-making hour, but worth it if it kept Hazō from spotting her.
Is something wrong with Keiko? She's being creative... wtf?
"Pangolin Clan Technique: Massive Earth Scoop!" Pandamonium cried, stretching one clawed hand up to the wall of the quarry.
Well there goes the ambush plan.
Hazō burst out of the ground twenty feet from Pandā.
Nvm he dumb.

Gift: high-grade writing implement.
Objection to this: a high-grade writing instrument is a bit much for a casual meeting like this.

You may find the calligraphy ^_^ too memey for your tastes (make sure you're not rejecting it out of hand though), but I do think that a calligraphy of something would be better for this than a high-grade thing (A drawing shows 'I spent some time on this' and 'this is an emotion/concept I'm sharing with you', but without much material value that would key into the 'fancy gift' social structures). There's a lot of things you could have Hazou draw that might fit the meeting better.
