On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

@soulcake Forgive me for bringing this really old thing up, but when Dolgi was an apprentice he said to Fjolla that he 'swore on his beard he would not marry Klorah until he was a master' I assume this wasn't an Oath but rather a oath correct? Since last I checked he only recently got Master status and he's been pumping out children since he was an Journeyman.

Masterwork makes you a Master in the eyes of your own Master, in this case, Dolgi's Branawongr thing. He is already considered a Master in the eyes of his peers when he returned from his Journeyman's Trial with the piece being Ironwing's Armor.

Huh, I wasn't aware of that Tid bit, thank you then!

Now to debate certain omake with that in mind...

We know Master Yorri is so odd, but how odd though?

Because I've gotten weird ideas (again), this time involving Yorri trying to cook Dragon Ogre(s) with mixed results

I mean, didn't he end up with his troll fixation pretty much by accident? Doesn't seem that off.
Yorri's oddness knows no limit

I get the feeling something in the north caused Yorri to become the way he is. He gets more odder as we go through the book, I feel like there'll be a reveal when we finally go to 10/10.

Its also where Yorri was waiting with a few Gronti so I assume theres significance there.

Maybe we could make a single "Cast" that contains all of the molds for the individual chain-links already interlocked and use a funnel/channel system to fill them all simultaneously? a "Chainshirt Mold" essentially.

Sound even maybe possible?

Its not physically possible to make a mold like that at this tech level. (or likely at all).
You can 3d print chain mail... But this is negative space... Sort of inverse 3d printing.

If the metallurgy of Gromril is in any way similar to steel, Cast metal has a very different properties from Forged metal.

Chainmail needs flexible steel to form the rings, but cast metal tends to be brittle and inflexible.

I think the most likely thing to work is Adamant tools to make gromril wire, taking advantage of Adamant's extremely high melting point (2x gromril).
If we heat Gromril to the point where its soft enough to draw into wire, we could probably weave it into mail while it's hot and malleable.
I think its going to come down to making specialized tools and developing the finesse to work fine manipulation of the superheated gromril without ruining the properties or needs to be good mail.
We will probably need unusual runes on our tools to get it done.

I have been thinking about it and wanted to get a few other opinions, but is making gromril chain mail the best thing we can do for as many dwarfs as possible? We have research in our backlog that has the potential to restore sight and hearing to other dwarfs, who will no doubt be able to take more apprentices and contribute to the greater whole than a single dwarf can. As great as the prestige that comes from gromril chain may give, is going for it for the prestige and a commission that may or may not need it really important? It doesn't really seem to fit Snorri, not to me at least. Thoughts?

Prestige lets us do things like prosthetics on an even larger scale, even more often, with less grumbling because we're a Runelord, not some smith. It's VERY useful, AND it lets us just upgrade hero units faster.

Plus there's the arguable knockon effects of Gromril Chain not being an Ancestor Only Thing, which may lead to other Runelords trying it out and proliferating it, but that's a bit less likely.

It might not fit the usual greatest benefit for the greatest number, but i think Snorri was so strict about that requirement because of the Incursion.
In times of peace, I don't think he'd be so strict about it. He's not a machine: he has hobbies and likes things other than working to better Karaz Ankor.

He likes cooking and making toys in his free time... sure he also uses that free time to make prosthetics, but it's different. Being a bleeding heart that wants to help is part of his character. He's not doing it just out of cold calculation, greatest good for the greatest number kind of thing.

The Gromril chain is a challenge Grugni gave him, as something he thinks Snorri could do. Think of Snorri as a craftsman, getting a personal piece of homework from an Ancestor, and how he would feel about that. It might not be extremely important on the grand scale of things, but it probably is very important to Snorri personally. If he manages to do it, he'll have proven the Ancestor right about his skill. If Grungni thinks I can do it, who am I to doubt him.

It's a character defining moment.

If you look at Snorri's reaction to him being extraordinary, you see how modest he is when it comes to that. When he thinks Thungni may have approved of his plea at the Conclave, for example. Or when he explains his visions about Adamant to the other runelords.

There's also the fun part, the running theme of "its beardlings all the way down", which is really fun to read. Snorri goes and does something like making Gromril chainmail... and we get to read the Beardlings' reactions 😲 :o🤯.

Also, regarding the chainmail, imagine this
but done at temperatures high enough to make Gromril malleable

Chain if it succeeds will not only improve all the commissioned armours so far, it will also be a bonus for the upcoming Valaya and Gazul commissions.

Is it the maximum immediate benefit possible? Probably not, but we also stopped to research Forged Limb before making the prosthetics.

Making further rounds of dwarf colonisation more reliable and with fewer risks has its own follow on benefits just the same as inventing runic eyes would.

It is that, and also whatever happened with his master, which by current thread speculation we think was Durin the Lost.
