Also, solve the delay by talking Uncle to help weaponize the self-assembling acid grenades.

Actually, we really should keep an eye out for any interesting or exotic lifeforms. It would be a way to win points with him without committing atrocities.

I'm not sure that I'm comfortable with talking to Orochimaru right now. While I strongly suspect that MfD's version of Orochimaru is more empathetic than in canon (I've talked about it before, but I can't seem to find the post), I don't think that he cares for us very much. I'd much rather wait until Hazou's strong enough to hold Orochimaru off, but, bare minimum, I'd say that we should at least wait until we talk to Tsunade about him, first. Part of Hazou's issue is that he doesn't understand Orochimaru. And that's a dangerous thing --just look at us pissing off Asuma, the current Hokage, because of a minor misunderstanding?

On the topic of strength, Hazou had a minor epiphany regarding the Iron Nerve (that only fools would think that the IR was "purely physical," or something similar). Do we know if Hazou retained this insight? It might help him regarding his bloodline, which would help him unlock more power, which would help him in his goal for Uplift.

The QMs have requested us not to come up with more ways to abuse the Iron Nerve. Confusingly, after that they gave us stunts for taking advantage of the Iron Nerve to look at the summoning scroll. So I'm not sure what their stance on that is now

Damn, I must have missed that. They probably just don't want us to rely on the bloodline for everything, since that would be boring to write. As for the stunts, maybe it was a "you looked into the abyss and survived" reward, rather than a rescinding of that request?

[X] Action Plan: Intelligence Gathering
  • Make sure that Noburi and Akane are alright.
  • Continue pilgrimage and learning more about the local environment.
    • Specifically ask after the woman who came back from the forest. Who is she? What did she do?
  • Meet with local contact. Ask about the scroll and the summoner.
    • Be clear that you're not looking to take the scroll if the summoner is still alive.

Just realized that Leaf is probably sitting on a very valuable trade item: candy/sugary stuff. Think about it:
  • Leaf is basically a giant forest
  • Forests have bees
  • Bees make honey
  • Honey means sugary sweetness
  • Aburame clan are insect controllers
    • Or at least have a great familiarity with bugs
    • Familiarity can turn into control
    • Can tame bugs, given enough time/bug generations
  • Throw in other forest herbs like mint and you have variety
  • Throw that in together and you have the basics for some basic sweets

Leaf could get a giant paycheck if they use this properly... What do you all think?
Edit: It now occurs to me that a military culture might not have invested very much into sweets. Maybe they put it towards making sweeter alcohol?

I think they already are :V

If I recall correctly, beekeeping is a very secretive civilian profession in the EN. I'm not sure how well having ninja do it would play out with the MC. We could suggest the beekeepers hire Aburame Till n Fills, but they may not like giving outsiders the necessary information to do the job correctly.

Might be worth a try though, especially if it will ramp up production enough.

[X] Action Plan: The Other Forest

Word Count: 299
  • Make sure Noburi and Akane are alright.
  • Quick group meeting to discuss our next steps (below):
    • Listen to what everyone's learned.
    • (If we haven't already) Give Haru the rundown on how Uplift operates on missions, if we haven't already. Ask his skills regarding infiltration/recon, and integrate that into our operations.
  • Continue pilgrimage and learning more about the local environment.
    • Why is the Greater Forest so dangerous? Does anyone know what happened to the missing people?
    • Specifically ask after the woman who came back from the forest. Who is she? What did she do?
    • The oracle guy Akane learned about sounds interesting, we should investigate that further.
  • Meet with local contacts.
    • Avoid stepping on the contact's toes. For example, the monk may be pious, so care must be taken to avoid insulting the religious/cultural practices of O'Uzo Island. When in doubt, consult Jiraiya's notes and our knowledge of the region.
    • Ask if they have any reports they want to send back to Leaf.
    • Ask about the scroll and the summoner.
      • Did anyone (read: ninja) come from Sky, Star, Moon...some night-related country ~20 years ago?
      • Do they know about the woman who came back from the forest?
      • If they don't know, can they direct us to people who do?
      • Do they know/have any relevant documents, reports, or rumours about ninja in O'uzo?
  • Follow-up on leads from the contacts/pilgramage.
    • Was the woman-who-came-back the Summoner, or someone else? Did she hide the scroll, does she live in the forest...?
    • If we believe the scroll is in there, investigate the Greater Forest for hints.
      • It's supposedly very dangerous, so be on high alert and prepare to retreat at any point.
      • Use SC to minimize risk while investigating. Hazou's presumably practiced daily, so he can use it for 24-30 minutes.

some things I would like to change from the plan
Be clear that you're not looking to take the scroll if the summoner is still alive.
I'd like this removed. We aren't planning on murdering the summoner to take the scroll but we are totally willing to buy the scroll from her. Also willing to adopt her or possibly steal the scroll from her of the opportunity presents itself.

additional edits I would like is to include asking our contact about people who came approximately 20 years ago from sky star or moon

On my phone but these edits seem reasonable. What was the reasoning for the sky/star/moon question? Was it where we thought the Summoner came from?

Yeah Enma knows they are something night related
Massive simian shoulders allow for truly magnificent shrugs. "Dunno. She came from some dinky little place...Sky? Star? Moon? Something night-related anyway. I doubt they had the juice to stop her."

You're not asking Akane to followup on the oracle guy?

Hey, do we know if there are any contacts in the area? I can't remember if that was something we checked before we left Leaf. If there are, then it might be worth checking in on them for some information from someone "in the know," so to speak.

  • Investigate the Greater Forest. Be *very careful*.

Sounds like a recipe for dangerous encounter with local wildlife in Hazo's weakened state. Part of me thinks "no problemo", other part says "don't go."

That being said, currently, none of our clues point directly to the Greater Forest yet, so there's no reason to go there yet. We care about the woman coming from the forest being a summoner.

If the summon scroll is located in the forest, we could go look for it, but I wouldn't do it without some idea of knowing where to look.

MfD Word Count Table 14/03/20
This is an update of the MfD word count table for your delectation, from the quest's humble beginning in December 2015 to the present day.

Various notes:
  • The data are entirely unreliable. The per-update word counts were derived from the SV threadmark manager, which is dubious, the numbers have not been fully double-checked, there's various weirdness like some threadmarks being out of chronological order so I had to figure them out manually (especially but not exclusively that month of the Chūnin Exam Tournament), and just generally you should trust nothing.
  • The longest update on record is "Chapter 277: The Election", at 12,733 words.
  • The shortest update is hard to calculate because at low levels it's hard to draw the line between an update and an in-character infopost. The absolute shortest canon story post is 59 words (Chapter 2b), but that's major Early Instalment Weirdness. The best representative candidate is "Chapter 274: Pray I Do Not Alter It Further", at 469 words.
  • The two shortest months were December 2017 and January 2018, during the Great Rules Rewrite. January 2018 featured one canon update, weighing 2,500 words, with everything else dumped into the "non-canon" grab bag.
  • The smallest representative month is June 2018, during the fist stage of the Chūnin Exam, at 13,400 words.
  • The biggest month is May 2019, the Battle of the Gods and its aftermath, at 54,900 words. Honourable mention goes to October 2018, the inter-stage training period of the Chūnin Exam, with 50, 600. Contrast that with the previous point.
  • The average (mean) month falls at around 30,000 words.
  • The shortest title by word and character number is "Chapter 242: Ami".
  • The longest title by word number is "Chapter 236: In Which Our Hero Is Reminded He Is Not The Only Clever Bastard", at 13 words.
  • The longest title by character number is "Chapter 25: Righteous...FACE!...PUNCHIIIIINNNNGGGG!!!!!!!!!", at 47 characters including dramatic punctuation.
  • If anyone wants to come up with any other interesting stats, feel free. The data are all there.
Now for the showing off.

MfD started in December 2015. According to this useful site, it overtook Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone for Americans) in word count in April 2017, and the entire Lord of the Rings series (including The Hobbit) the following July, together with War and Peace as those are apparently within around 20,000 words of each other. Who knew. Having beaten the full Harry Potter series last January, our natural next objective is to catch up with A Song of Ice and Fire, which should take several months at our current pace. Of course, having recognised a worthy rival, G. R. R. Martin is already close to finishing his next novel (according to optimistic fans).

The current total stands at 1,645,029 words.
