[X] Upgrade the Mini-town:

  • Build a school
    • Purpose is to educate the population with the fundamentals such as reading/writing/math/history.
    • Daytime: Children. Nightime: Adult
    • Get permits/permission/etc from MC and appropriate authority.
    • Hire teachers, carpenters, architect, etc
    • Promise space to Leaf academy until they rebuild.
  • Hire Keiko's pangolins for engineering. Trade foodstuff/art/exotic material?
    • Build several underground levels, with rooms for expansion.

This is stuff internally. I guess we could get some political things done if necessary.

Excellent Ami chapter, @Velorien, and somehow I think we're finally leaning how to stay on our own two feet around her (when she's not trying to keep us off-balance, that is).

And I noticed this line as an interesting implication Forbidden Lore-wise:
"No!" Mori's eyes blazed. "I will never surrender control to something just because it's more real than me!"

I feel like next plan should explicitly put some of Ami's suggestions into practice.

[X] Good Mourning Major Clans
Wordcount: 292

Clear these ideas with the clan.
  1. Goketsu
    1. Convince the clan to let us go mourn with other clans personally.
    2. Hazou's usually been good about handling mournings.
    3. Besides, as a friend, Hazou owes them a visit.
  2. Estate
    1. Harden critical locations.
    2. Continue expanding and improving living space.
    3. Recruitment
      1. Top priority is unaffiliated/liason ninja.
        1. Soft-sell: We have goodies for friends, and obscenely good stuff for trustworthy adoptees.
      2. Aides
        1. Look for:
          1. Loyalty
          2. Competence.
        2. Consider searching among civilians.
    4. Establish free Goketsu school.
      1. General academics track (reading, writing, math)
        1. Open to everybody, ninja and civilian.
          1. Hire good civilian teachers for this track.
      2. Basic Ninja Track (basic tai, nin, genjutsu)
        1. Open to Academy students
          1. Hire retired and offduty ninja.
      3. Establish Hazou office hours where he teaches willing ninja.
        1. Gently encourage other clan members to follow suit.
    5. Keep making the rounds - get to everybody at least once.
    6. Continue preparing for Merchant Council ideas like the storage seal bank.
    7. Begin setting foundations for a chakra beast farm - well away from housing expansion zones.
    8. Check up on the international merchant network.
  3. Clans
    1. Do what we've always done with mourning. It's worked out pretty well.
      1. Ask what we can do to support each other.
    2. Try to get some time in with everybody, but the priority list:
      1. Yamanaka/Nara
      2. Hyuuga/Akimichi
      3. Hagoromo/Amori/Kyosho/Aburame
    3. Petition to allow Kagome to work from home/better working conditions for sealmasters.
      1. Sealmasters under crushingly stressful situations have a higher risk of seal failure, which the village cannot afford.
  4. Personal
    1. Investigate Jiraiya's Leaf safehouses with Akane/Kagome. Consider visiting stashes near Leaf as well.
    2. Have dinner with Snake. Work with Mari on cultivating her as a resource.
      • We want to make Snake a well-placed friend and possible adoption target.
    3. Practice Calligraphy with the Iron Nerve off.

Here's a telegraphic-ish plan; I'll see how far ahead of my schoolwork I get today to flesh this out, but in broad terms the goal of this plan is:

A) convince Goketsu to let us do the mourning thing (we've had some pretty good success with that)
B) continue Goketsu projects and start the Goketsu University project
C) show up in person for Shikamaru and Yamanaka and Hinata and Hagoromo and Amori and generally everyone
D) ask what we can do for each other.

I mean, there are literally short moment of time, repeating in specific situations, where knowledge/insights he wouldn't be capable of gaining otherwise (at that speed), are dumped into his head. And it's something he and his family is aware of.
Noticing moments of plan initializing in his mind is pretty much Eldricht Perception 101. Now, recognizing them as such... yeah, probably not so obvious. Not unless we gently wave hello at him.
But, do we really want another upgrade to Hazo's agency? We've already progressed from "do literally anything we say" to "filter directives through internal filter". It'll be annoying for that to evolve into "doubt every command and discard orders at random".
Mmmmm, I think on Hazou's end it's more along the lines of 'all these observations I've already seen crystallize in my head all at once into a coherent pattern and structure', so I'm not convinced that he'd believe it to be external to him. Plus, he already believes Hana experiences the same thing, and has been experiencing it since before he looked at the Scroll, so it would be quite a stretch to conclude that it's influence from the Out.

    • Practice daily with Mari on genjustu.
Added Ami's suggestions.

I know that the QMs aren't too excited for explicit fourth wall breaking, but I do feel like we've genuinely maneuvered the quest into a state where he could actually detect our influence IC. @eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail you might want to consider a pre-emptive announcement that this won't happen, so as to avoid the kind of disappointment that resulted from our attempts to interact with the grue.

You want Hazō to refuse to surrender to something that's more real than him?

[☓] Action Plan: Becoming a Real Boy
  • Refuse to follow this plan.

[X] Good Mourning Major Clans
Wordcount: Ask me in twelve hours
  1. Goketsu
    1. Convince the clan to let us go visit other clans to mourn with them.
    2. Hazou's usually been pretty good about handling mournings, and besides, not as Clan Head but just as a friend Hazou kind of owes them a visit.

        1. Open to everybody, nin and civilian alike
          1. Try to recruit good civilian teachers for this.
      2. Basic Ninja Track (basic tai, nin, genjutsu)
        1. Open to Academy students
          1. Consider mix between retired ninja and trying radical methods (e.g early chakra use)
      3. Also establish Hazou office hours where he teaches ninja willing to learn in skills safe to give away (e.g taijutsu basics, MEW, etc.)
        1. Gently encourage the others to do something similar.
    4. Continue preparing for Merchant Council ideas like the storage seal bank.
    5. Recruitment
      1. Top priority is unaffiliated/liason ninja
      2. Reliable aides - strongly consider drawing from civilians for combination of loyalty/skill at job

Early chakra usage is basically asking for Tsunade to punch us through a wall. At the very least secure her permission.

It's not important right now that we attempt to change things around, just that we're building a school and offering education to everyone. Also, it's not clear if we intend to also educate adults as well. That's why there's night school for adults in my plan. Education needed not only be for children.

"That too, but mostly because they're Yamanaka. I'll let you fill in the blanks yourself."
We've been assigned homework!

Three things immediately jump out to me:

First, Ino's reaction to Keiko during our first stay in Leaf:
"Finally, Miss Mori's bloodline may represent a cognitive hazard," Jiraiya said. "If she gives you cause for a mind scan, call for help. The entire group will be taken to a secure cell and a Yamanaka elder will perform the probe. Clear?"

"Clear, sir," Yamanaka said, her eyes wide.

"Troublesome," Nara muttered. His teammate was too busy staring at what she clearly thought might be an eldritch horror to bother hushing him.
Ino, the future Clan Head, needed to be told that, which implies she didn't know who the Mori are on first mention. Probably just the case of her not having sufficient clearance yet...

Second, this piece of worldbuilding, during the adoption discussion between Keiko and Shikaku:
"What are you writing?" she asked, because of course it beggared belief that Leaf's counterpart to Mori Biwako should need to use a memory aid during an interview.

Shikaku gave a sudden smile, and held the paper up. There was a loose oval-ish outline on it that could have been a sketch of a face.

"An exercise to improve the visual part of my mind," he explained. "In ancient times, it was the Yamanaka who were the verbal thinkers, we believe, and Nara the visual. I trust you see the implications?"

Kei did. Shikaku's phrasing suggested two interesting things. First, he referred to these modes of thinking as if they were roles, with one clan taking each. That suggested that the Akimichi also had some distinctive means of thinking that was neither verbal nor visual, which was fascinating in itself, but not as fascinating as the idea that the three clans had somehow developed complementary ways of perceiving the world, and that those ways stayed complementary even if the roles changed around.

Second, the changes themselves. It made sense for the Nara who had first developed the famous shadow ninjutsu to be visual thinkers (she was not yet sure what this term actually meant, but could infer by association). If their descendants had switched from visual to verbal, then that change paralleled the clan's own change of specialisation from ninjutsu to the management of what was primarily verbal information. What kind of mechanism was involved, and in which direction did it exert causal influence?

"The Yamanaka have researched the matter somewhat," Shikaku said, ironically as if reading her mind, "and I have been following their work with interest. Nara Clan membership opens a number of such doors to Yamanaka and Akimichi resources."

Third:
"Are the Nara in possession of a Bloodline Limit?" Kei asked with a frown. "One has never been mentioned when discussing the Ino-Shika-Chō, and I was under the assumption that all your abilities were simply secret techniques."
As we know now, the Nara do have a bloodline, which suggests that the other two do as well. The naive interpretation would be that the Nara just allied themselves with the other two "normal" clans during the Warring Clans era, but if there's something weird going on...

Wild guess: The Yamanaka and the Akimichi are the result of the Nara's experiments at creating bloodlines by connecting them to otherworldly entities (I'll once again remind you of this). Their modes of thinking changed after the transformation; pre-change, they were bloodlineless.

Some of this could be confirmed by researching ancient history, I suspect.

Excellent, the quest for Power Overwhelming continues.

What to do next? I think meeting with Hinata would be fun.

I have a feeling that if we follow Ami's advice to its logical conclusion, this will stop being a quest and instead turn into a story. I'm not sure I would be totally against that, it would really let the authors write what they want.

"I don't do genjutsu, but I like to think I'm pretty good at influencing how people think and feel, and there's a hell of a lot to learn if you want to do the thing properly. If you ever need someone to mess with you in distressing but helpful ways, I'm your gal. Actually, maybe I should do that anyway, if it'll make Keiko happy."
Oh boy oh boy, more TYSPs!

Jiraiya Seal Suggestion:

Hyperbolic Time Seal: Within the confines of this seal's effects, time passes more quickly inside than out by a factor of X.

Hypobolic Time Seal: Within the confines of this seal's effects, time passes more slowly inside than out by a factor of X. Interestingly, this allows you to see an explosion happen in real time.

Make it happen @eaglejarl @Velorien!

Harry took Paper-2 in his trembling hand, and unfolded it.

Paper-2 said in slightly shaky handwriting:

DO NOT MESS WITH TIME

Harry wrote down "DO NOT MESS WITH TIME" on Paper-1 in slightly shaky handwriting, folded it neatly, and resolved not to do any more truly brilliant experiments on Time until he was at least fifteen years old.

Aw, c'mon, temporal acceleration/deceleration within a given space is totally different from messing with time.

Here's an obvious realization that I'm a dumb duck for not noticing:

The Yamanaka are the Human Path Thinker Clan, and there's actually Six.

Huh, I'm pretty surprised that Hazou and Ami were able to have an earnest (?) conversation on the nature of their old home and their new one, both in regards to family and village.

Ami seems to have also firmly established that at least she believes this to be a Rock op instead of an Akatsuki one, so that's something new for us to work with.

Surprisingly wholesome update all around @Velorien :p

One of the nice things about this chapter is how you can see Hazou making progress in dealing with Ami, and the whole thing is more of a conversation and less her jerking him around.

"You're wrong," Hazō said with absolute, unquestionable confidence. "I've met Orochimaru. You were there. He does not negotiate. Even you couldn't have turned him for real."

I kinda feel like Ami's biting off more than she can chew, here. For better or worse, I think Hazou gets Orochimaru on an intuitive level better than she does. Part of it is probably the alternate realities, but Hazou's normal mindset is (uncomfortably) closer to Oro's than it might seem.
