Why do we care so much that she'll be tortured?

Human Empathy, I guess?

She's an innocent we could save from torture and murder and I'm a little appalled that so many people are arguing against doing so.

I know you're not doing it to be awful.
You're being what you consider pragmatic.
But we need to hash out the exact probabilities (or our best guesses thereof) of all the factors involved, get on the same page, and work out how risky it would be to save her and how much risk we're willing to take.

Right now, the main difference of opinion here seems to be based on different priors, so we should synchronise them before debating this any further.

...
Why wouldn't we care? All jokes aside, the main character isn't Orochimaru yet. I'm not saying we should 'rescue all the damsels' but surely some basic empathy is not too much to ask for?
Besides, "your Kohai will be tortured!" "whatever" is hardly IC for Hazou, unless we took a turn to Sociopathville while I wasn't looking?

Kato Shota has more screentime than Akane, yet we're not worried about getting him out.
Nobby excanged a few words with him, and that's it. We don't even know if he went to talk to him the next day, as he said he would.
Akane has spent several days with us, training. Akane will be seen in bad light once word gets out we killed a guy. Civilian kids might be questioned. Akane will be questioned with prejudice.

Shikigami-sensei says "the fuck, man".
Shikigami was big on teamwork, and not selling out people, and other fairly honorable stuff, so.

Chapter 26.1: Earlier, at the Training Ground...
~ Earlier ~

"Rest," Hazō said. Instead of collapsing to the ground as he'd expected, Ishihara pushed herself up from the plank she'd been holding for the last six minutes, walked to the bench, and sat down. She was gasping and her muscles were quivering, but she kept her head up and drank water carefully.

"Thank you, senpai," she said. "I know that it must be difficult to work with a student who can't keep up, but you have been very patient."

Hazō dropped onto the bench beside her, taking a long pull on his canteen to give himself time to process that. "You are not so far behind as you think," he said at last. "Your conditioning is acceptable for a ninja, you have good reflexes, and you have never complained once, or given anything less than your absolute best. The training required by the Righteous Face Punching style is extreme, and few are willing to do it. It speaks very highly of you that you will."

Ishihara blushed. "Thank you, senpai," she said.

Hazō flipped one hand in a gesture of casual dismissal. "How did you come to be here?" he asked.

Ishihara looked down for a moment, then made herself meet his eyes. "I was in the Academy at Hidden Leaf," she said. "I was not the best in the class, but I was in the top third. I passed my final exams and was due to graduate in the morning. Then Mizuki-sensei came to me at night and told me that there was one more part of the exams, a field examination. He had me pick from a hat to see what mine would be, and the paper I chose said 'Penetration test: steal the Forbidden Scroll from Hokage Tower'. He gave me a card stating that I was a student at the Academy on my final exam, and told me that the ninja there knew that penetration tests were to be expected and, if I was caught, I should show the card. I broke into Hokage Tower but was caught almost immediately. When I showed them the card they knew nothing about it. Just as they were going to drag me to T&I. They restrained me so that I couldn't make hand seals and brought me to holding."

She smiled a trembling smile. "My taijutsu may not be excellent, but I have always excelled at trap making, mechanical tests, and escape artistry. It was very early in the morning, and my captor was young and inexperienced—a new chūnin who had pulled graveyard shift. I was bound and just a student, so he wasn't quite as attentive as he should have been. On the way to T&I I slipped the bindings on my hands and started substituting. I kept going until I was nearly chakra exhausted, then hid in a midden until the search passed me by. From there I was able to escape Leaf. I wandered for a time, and eventually heard about this place."

Hazō looked at her with respect. "That is a most youthful accomplishment," he said.

The smile was more solid this time. "Thank you, senpai," she said. With a sigh, she pushed herself to her feet. "I believe I have rested enough," she said. "Shall we return to training?"

"Of course!" Hazō said, leaping to his feet. "We shall Stoke the Fires of our Youth with the first tenet of the Righteous Face Punching Style: Always Punch Them In The Face!"

o-o-o-o

~Now~

"Wake up!" Inoue-sensei hissed. "Grab your gear, we need to go!" She was jittering, bouncing from foot to foot.

Hazō was on his feet in an instant. "What's wrong, sensei?" he asked.

"I just killed a guy in the Fortress," Inoue-sensei said. "They'll find the body any minute, we need to go!"

"Sensei, if we leave now we will be pursued by people who know our actual faces," Keiko said. "Where did you put the body?"

"Under a desk! It was the only place, come on!" She reached out to grab Keiko by the arm, stopped at the last moment, and then waved her angrily at their bug-out bag stash.

"Sensei, breathe," Keiko said. "Do what you are always telling us to do," Keiko said. "Breathe and think."

Inoue-sensei started to snap at her, but then paused and forced herself to breathe. For several long seconds she stood with her eyes closed just breathed. Slowly, her body language calmed down. Finally, she opened her eyes and nodded.

"Thanks, kid," she said. She sank down onto the futon. "Oh boy. This is a mess."

"What happened?" Noburi asked.

Briefly, Inoue-sensei explained about her failed infiltration. "It was stupid," she said. "It just...pushed some buttons. When I was a kid, I had an uncle...I was an early bloomer and, well, anyway." She shuddered. "I kinda panicked. Kami, I haven't done that in years."

"If I may make a suggestion, sensei," Hazō said. "I think—"

What does Hazou think?

Given that we probably had time to talk with Inoue before she went full derp-mode...

@eaglejarl What do Keiko and Inoue-sensei think about Akane's backstory?

OH.

That's an idea.

We could have Mari barge into the liberator's office, throw the guy's corpse at his feet and make a huge stink about how this rapist tried to sexually assault her!

If we play our cards right, we could get more payment or perks or whatever from him as he tries to placate our crazy violent jonin sensei.

We wouldn't even have to leave camp.

@MadScientist Too late for that now, Inoue-sensei is already with us and the corpse is still at the Liberator HQ. She'd have to re-infiltrate them, get the body, then get out (with the body) before they find the creeper.

@eaglejarl What do Keiko and Inoue-sensei think about Akane's backstory?

Neither of them are sure why Mizuki would do that, although they can think of possible reasons. Inoue has seen abusive instructors who take a dislike to a student and beat on them or subject them to harrassment until they quit. She's also had teachers make "inappropriate advances" on her and other kunoichi; one of her friends refused those advances and the teacher put her in the hospital. The whole affair was covered up and the teacher wasn't punished. She thinks this could have been something like that, although it seems awfully elaborate.

Akane blushed. "Thank you, sempai," she said.

By Jashin-sama's grace. How can something make me more suspicious and less worried about the consequences at the same time?

That backstory seems way too convoluted to be an actual lie. Doesn't mean she is not a spy but that's probably at least part of the truth.

I also have to revise my assessment of her skills upwards. If she could really escape Konoha from that situation she probably won't slow us down too much.

So that's her story then.
Why not wait for a Yamanaka to do their mind reading thing? Or just let T&I use some truth serum or something?
Though Mizuki attempting to steal the scroll before he got Naruto do it does make sense.

I'm thinking the Mizuki incident did happen, but instead of running away she's here on a mission from Leaf. Genin aren't suspicious, right? And she has a cover story. A kawarimi-proficient escape artist with mech. aptitude spec would make a decent infiltrator. She might be sneaky too, we just don't know.

I don't suppose we've seen her bare arms? I'd like to know if she rocks any spiral tattoos :V

Also her slowing us down is not an argument anymore, her shape is clearly no worse than Nobby's.

We can also subtly check her tongue for a ROOT seal, though given that this is OOC knowledge, the seal might be placed anywhere (and our current relationship with her is nowhere near enough to do a thorough search).

Oh shit. I'm gonna cut Inoue some slack.

Also,

She smiled a trembling smile. "My taijutsu may not be excellent, but I have always excelled at trap making, mechanical tests, and escape artistry.

Someone who specializes in Mechanical Aptitude and escaping? And she single-handedly escaped Konoha as an almost-genin? Maybe she won't be as much dead weight as we thought. Traps could synergize with Hazou's seals a lot.

Hey. Heeeeey~

Akane likes Hazou, right.
Nobby likes Keiko who likes Mari.
If Akane joins us and Nobby does something swoon-worthy like crit-rolling diplomacy again we could have a love-something ^^
If that's not a compelling reason to have her I don't know what is.

Think of the shenanigans!

She pretty much confirmed that she's legit using ooc knowledge. Hazou has no idea who Mizuki is or how he might have screwed somebody over, but by giving us this canon-compliant story she proves that those events actually unfolded the way she said. Well she proves it to us the reader, if not necessarily to Hazou.

She got in easily enough. If the body hasn't been found yet she could probably go back and get it. She doesn't know how the Liberator would respond.
Why not just steal the body and make it disappear? Missing person is not a dead person, and while we are still suspect as the new guys it's better than admitting guilt by running. We still want to do that, but this might buy us some time.

@eaglejarl, have we chidori'd any of the people on our previous team?

It might be important.

You don't know the Chidori. If you meant kawarimi then yes, all four of you have authorized the other three.

I don't suppose we've seen her bare arms? I'd like to know if she rocks any spiral tattoos :V

You have and she's not. Ninja workout clothes are a sleeveless shirt and long shorts; you've seen everything that would reasonably be exposed in that.

We can also subtly check her tongue for a ROOT seal, though given that this is OOC knowledge, the seal might be placed anywhere (and our current relationship with her is nowhere near enough to do a thorough search).

When I am an Evil Overlord, I will not be pants-on-head stupid enough to put a distinguishing tattoo on my Legions of Terror's bodies. Mind control seals, okay. But not tattoos.

Let's talk probabilities.
What is more probable - Hazou accidentally stumbling upon genuine fan of Youth, or Hazou being played with by infiltration specialist?

Admirers of Youth aren't that plentiful. Infiltration specialists willing to pretend being Youthful are probably more widespread.
Frankly, I cannot say what is more likely - lie or truth.

I declare that prior probability of Akane being a spy is 50% (1/1). I am open to revisions of this number, if your reasoning is persuasive.

Now let's see how Akane fares during interactions.
  • Training: she kept up. Either very good acting, or real determination. Inconclusive. Likelihood ratio 1/1
  • She is a lone genin. Hazou mentioned that "The only genin are students of a chunin or jonin, not lone actors." Either Akane is the only lone genin in samurai army, or she is not a genin. I'd say, it's three times more likely that she's a spy than her being unique lone genin. Likelihood ratio 3/1
(1/1)*(1/1)*(3/1) = 3/1

If my assumptions are correct, the chance that Akane is actually is spy is 75%

This is not looking good at all.
Is there a reason to take her with us anyway, even if she is a spy?

I suspect that these particular GMs might take a sadistic joy in punishing meta-gamers.

That isn't to say that her story is definitely wrong, but it means that we can't count on OOC.
