Also the kind of merchants that could create trouble for us.

Quite true. It's a harsh goddamn world. A quiet, honest respectable merchant (which is what you described) probably isn't interested in working with ninjas unless he has to, and if he has to would rather work with his local Ninja Village (or in the case of Rice the most well-established clans he can find).

By definition, anyone who would work with Hazou's team is also someone who has the potential to cause trouble for Hazou's team. Either because they're greedy or they're in a bad situation and need a way out* or because they're excitable and enjoy taking big risks for big profit. There's simply no escaping that fact. You either accept it or give up on working with merchants.

I mean, if you disagree please explain it to me from the perspective of your quiet, honest, merchant who is already good at making money. Put yourself in their position and tell me an approach that would convince them to take a chance on Hazou's team. Because I guarantee that is the standard the QMs will apply. Remember, you specifically said a merchant who is not a scoundrel, has no troublesome personal situations (I know you said gambling or drinking; I assume you meant a stable situation in general) and likes minding his own business.

What exactly is the pitch you're going to make to such a person?

*The reason the innkeeper's daughter was willing to throw in.

We are questionable ninja. It doesn't mean we have to act like one.

I don't know what this means.

Less effort. Was @Radvic's idea. I just named it. Basically we get flight in some form, leave the EN, carpet bomb some area to kill off Chakra monsters, then use it as a base of operations.

Sounds like a good idea. I'd still want to make HH eventually, because making a sky-fortress is just common sense (and even HH is just a stepping stone towards The Village Hidden in Low Earth Orbit, which in turn is a stepping stone towards The Village Hidden on The Moon, and so on, and so forth), but this looks like a step in the right direction.

Digging through old plans, how do people feel about starting work on a skybase?

  • Build our first skybase.
    • Define "1 unit" as a hollow wooden cuboid of dimensions 10m*10m*0.5m, with trapdoors in it to access the inside, and two loops of ninja wire looped around struts such that either could support the cuboid while 5SB'd.
    • 5SB tower or skywalker into the air, and position a unit so that it is horizontal. Open a trapdoor, and attach peripheral 5SB seals in equidistant positions at least 3m from the center of the unit. Attach the central seal to the first loop of ninja wire at the center of the unit. The unit is now locked in place. When the first 5SB seals are halfway used up, apply the same procedure to the second loop of ninja wire. When the first set is completely used up, replace them with a new set. Continuing this process allows us to maintain altitude indefinitely.
    • Test a prototype unit 1m off the ground for two whole seal rotations.
      • Safety first.
    • If the prototype succeeds, build 5 additional units, at least one with a hole large enough for a human to get through, and skywalk over the ocean, away from prying eyes.
      • We might be seen if we do this over land.
    • Set the units up to make a 10m cube. For 2 full seal rotations, maintain the skybase, but do not sleep inside it.
      • Safety first.
    • If the skybase appears safe, allow the team to sleep in it, with at least one person on watch at all times, and with everyone wearing skywalkers even in their sleep. If any unit loses 5SB for any reason, the team is to be woken up and evacuated.

Y'know, thinking about things to offer the Pangolins, earth seals come to mind. The air-filter seal has the feature of drawing in and expelling from opposite sides of the seal. If it were tuned to just pass dirt through it could serve as a kind of tunneling machine dragging a pocket around.

So we have a pangolin plot hook-in then. We also need to learn why sealcrafting is prohibited in the seventh realm.

I don't know what this means.

-or they need a guard as they go through foreign territory their own ninja refuse to cover or charge too much for for geopolitical reasons. Or, they're tired of paying protection money to the local racket and need somebody to go bust some heads. Or, they need a supply of something delivered or retrieved much faster than a traditional caravan can manage. Or, they need to send or receive a message much faster than a traditional caravan can manage. Or, they'd like to get news of the market prices of nearby cities sooner than their competitors and choose their routes accordingly. Or, they're looking for arbitrage opportunities. Or, they're just plain willing to pay well for chakra monster quills or similar rare items typical civilians can't supply and established ninja are too busy to get for less than exorbitant prices.

I don't see why we need to present ourselves as a bunch of shady missing-nin when we could just sell a merchant stuff.

I think rather than charging through the elemental nations like a bull in a china shop as we always do we should check with Jiraiya to make sure there's no wars going on and that he doesn't want us for anything immediately.

Cause we can get more value out of being sneaky ninja.

Also with our ability to sneak through borders once we get skywalkers we could def act as high speed delivery for merchants.

Correct or not, this isn't the most polite way of stating it.

After more consideration, I have... uh, reconsidered. My apologies to @Lailoken et. al. I will attempt to use more tact in the future rather than always opting for brevity and impact. Obviously past-20min!Vecht's position is untenable and stupid, and he should be twacked with a herring.

Sorry disagree. Jiraiya isn't our boss we just work with him sometimes. He doesn't get to dictate what we do.

I suspect that if we do that then we will definitely get a mission. Which puts our other plans on hold.

I dunno. Maybe if we can grab some low hanging fruit first for increased combat potential, maybe this isn't so bad? I would be loathe to piss off Jiraiya again, and I am actually hopefully optimistic about our combat potential in light of potential new jutsu, training, and Skywalkers/Macerators.

Edit: Also it would definitely get us out of the rut.

You prefaced the action with "Action Plan:" rather than "Action:" and so it was ignored.

I'm starting to remember why I gave up on this quest. Nothing's changed. Endless arguments over grandiose ambitions that hold little interest for me. Endless demands that training plans and seals be completed before the quest can go anywhere or anything that can be accomplished. Now apparently even the mechanic for registering a vote has become arcane and unknowable. (It sure isn't on the front page.)

It's not about him being our boss it's about him being a spymaster. He's a resource to be used like anything else for us. We don't want to cause a war because we're too proud to check with J.

Oh, I'm fine with that. There's no reason to show up in dark, hooded trench coats grumbling out, "Whadaya buyin'?", in thick accents. There's bound to be plenty of at least semi-legitimate work and trade, especially in areas where there isn't a local ninja monopoly. I'd be happy just getting a bit of cash saved up, but successfully completing good deals with merchants is a good start to establishing a network of long-term relationships as well.

"We're bored, so we're going to go do our thing. Where's the least bad place for something to suddenly 'splode right now?"

Nonono. This isn't necessary. Kiba is just using a feature of PlanBot that he shouldn't be because it needs improvement first.

Completely unrelated to normal voting.

I can see where you're coming from, but we have been putting off our own plans a lot. I'd be okay accepting a mission if we at least got the ball rolling on our own long term projects, even if it was just reaching out to some caravans and bombing a remote island to prep for HMoFN.

I feel like for this update we need to start laying ground work on merchant empire. Finish skywalkers and atleast one seal of Jiriyia's
