Gimme a bit y'all and I'll make a plan where we check in with Cannai called Doing Dog Daddy's Directives!
What is there to check in with Cannai about? We have about 10 more Leopards to kill, first engagement went pretty well.

I will also note that we are not in command of this mission. @_The_Bomb we should avoid short-circuiting our squad leader and should start by talking to them before vanishing back to the Seventh path

Hazō has been placed in technical command of a combat troop of eight dogs, although in practice Cancurunchu is still the actual boss
Technically we are in command, but yes Cancurunchu (Can-crunch-you, haha EJ, very funny) is the boss.

I think his ending shot about waiting for the Leopards to attack us is crazy though. Holy shit how many does he want to fight....

Yeah, I'm not likely to vote for a plan that has us check with Cannai. Not much point, and it uses too much chakra.

I understand that rules interaction, but wasn't Hazou also using two Armor-granting techniques that fight? Jiraiya even comments on it afterwards.

I think Rihaku is just noting that Hazou has, in fact, actually used PEA in combat before. Once.

Entirely reasonable for Hazou to have forgotten it since that was a weird event but nothing in the grand scheme of his life
I think this was Ghost Scales, an ablative armour Jutsu that gives a small bonus while active.

If they're coming to us, we can set up Force Wall traps everywhere. Our trapmaking sucks, but the minimum DC for Force Wall traps is 50, which(based on initiative rolls) would catch exactly half of the cats we saw in the last fight.

We can also bury/scatter Goo Bombs and implosion seals, to remote activate. It seems like the Cats like to hang back while their allies try, and wait until they have an opening to jump in, so waiting until we have an audience then exploding/imploding/gooing all nearby zones seems pretty effective.

EDIT: A good trap ring will also stop wounded(debuffed!) enemies from fleeing safely. This will hopefully make it easier to secure the 12 kills we're after. We just had several badly wounded Leopards escape, and I don't wanna commit to 5 more fights to get 10 more kills.

EDIT EDIT: Hazou will be very vulnerable to ambush while setting these up, but now might the the right time for a shadow clone or two to set up traps while Hazou Prime ducks underground with HlaM.
Once the trap array is done, he can either stay underground and participate via SC, or pop over to Noburi for a refill if we want Hazou Prime to fight(so he can pre-clear his next stagnation barrier).

Goddaaaaamn that's busted; I second any attempt at TH this ; though 7P magic [bark] might prevent us from being using/getting included in this buff.

To be fair, our Resolve didn't do shit against Orochimaru's Intimidation.
I think the scene you are referring to was a loss by one shift, IIRC. It was a close thing.

If Itachi initiated genjutsu against Kurenai, Kurenai would have to break free before retaliating. If Kurenai initiated genjutsu against Itachi, Itachi would have to break free before retaliating. In both cases we would see exactly the same physical evidence that we got in the update: the two of them are staring at each other. So while it is certainly possible that Itachi cast a genjutsu on Kurenai, it is by no means certain that he cast any genjutsu during the fight at all.
Would Itachi initiate a genjutsu against a genjutsu mistress in the middle of a free-for-all? He's got so many other lethal tools that I'm sceptical he'd choose one that left him so vulnerable. To me, it makes sense if Kurenai did, because it's her strongest weapon and Itachi is one hell of a prize.

As a start, I propose the following utility technique, which should both serve as a highly cost-effective buff to Hazō's social skills and as a way to begin gaining veterancy in the creation of paper ninjutsu:
LMAO it's making a come-back, noooo!

*If this isn't possible, there should be ways to position the team such that attacking Hazou is unattractive by default - perhaps have him in the center of the formation such that any incoming attack would have a good chance of targeting / being intercepted by a Dog instead.
Note: in this fight, stealthed-leopards were able to bypass the dogs to attack rear combatants, so I'm uncertain it's as safe as it sounds.

Dogs hate the skytower and it's really slow to carry them back and forth. Just do it on the ground. I think we should refill chakra from Nobs if we can (and grab his Banshee Fuckers)
We can use an airdome if we want to be 100% safe on the ground too

Will of the Pack
Stunt
Prereqs: Dog clan combatant, or summoner with substantial training with them

Members of the Dog clan may not be the strongest of the summon path's clans, but they make up for it in teamwork.

Every round of combat, the Pack member generates a number of tags on the aspect Pack Fighter equal to half their chakra boost bonus, rounded up. These may not be used for oneself; instead, they are spent in narratively-appropriate ways to defend or assist members of the Pack's team. Those benefiting from this do not require the stunt themselves.

The ways this expenditure may express itself include, but are not limited to:
  • Running Interference - Penalizes enemy attack or defence rolls
  • Striking together - Provides bonuses to allied attack rolls
  • Fighting as one - Utilizes a minimum of three tags apiece to treat the pack members as a single combat entity for the next round with markedly higher stats than any of them individually would have.
Oh, wow, I completely missed this. I was about 36 or 48 hours behind on the thread because of life and working on this update but you anticipated Strength of the Pack very accurately.

I understand that rules interaction, but wasn't Hazou also using two Armor-granting techniques that fight? Jiraiya even comments on it afterwards.
No, during the fight with KitKat Hazō was using Ghost Scales and the Pangolin Conditioning Jutsu which he has active at all time. Both are pangolin armor techniques so I get the confusion, but they aren't Pangolin Earth Armor.

Speaking of which, I didn't account for the -1 on physical skills that PCJ imposes. Not sure it was relevant.

The shadow clone don't even need to have much chakra invested beyond its casting cost. None really. It's purpose is to relay information, not fight.
I think you're thinking of Earth Clone. With those you pay the casting cost and then add extra chakra if you choose. With Shadow Clone you pay the very high casting cost and then your remaining chakra is distributed evenly across every instance of you, meaning Prime, the clone you just made, and any other shadow clones you might already have out.

And yes, when a shadow clone pops the chakra remaining to it gets spread evenly across all existing instances, but you didn't get back the chakra involved in creating it: 125 + 25*number of clones.

This update was much longer than one day.

It covered at least one research cycle (the one where we finished CATEARS and Force Blades

On that note, we voted in a bunch of prep day suggestions, can we get an update on those?
Oops. You're right. Will fix, sorry.

I'm not sure we have [unstagnated], actually.
You have. You were on a battlefield, in actual danger, and you contributed meaningfully to the fight.
I thought stress boxes went [II] [III] and so on, so the third stress box can take up to three stress and the two stress would have resulted in marking off that box. Is that not right?
That's right, and it's how it works in the ancestral Dresden Files RPG. In our system, after you cross off the box you also cross off everything left of it. High lethality option.

How was Cankamu (and the other dogs who did so) able to get the numeric benefit from both SotP and Force Claw without a combination stunt? Is it the same kind of possibly-temporary ruling as was made for Roki?
My mistake. I'm not going to go to the effort of fixing it so let's all pretend not to have noticed.

  • Check if damage exceeds stress track.
  • If it does, assign a Consequence.
  • Return to step one.
So that, roughly, you could only take as many Consequences as you need to to soak the damage
That's basically my understanding, yes. I'll talk to the others and see about updating the language in the rules. If I stuffed up the scene, oh well.

I think Rihaku is just noting that Hazou has, in fact, actually used PEA in combat before. Once.
Sadly, nope. As mentioned above, that was Pangolin Conditioning Jutsu and Ghost Scales. I'm confident that he has never once used PEA onscreen, much less in a fight, although I'm willing to be faflec'd.

(Some day I want my name to be the verb for something cool.)

This is correct, he shouldn't have taken a Mild here. I also can't figure out why the Mild is penalizing the roll before he takes the Consequence.
It was a huge amount of mechanics and by the time I got finished with it I was sufficiently exhausted that I didn't check it carefully enough? It went through multiple drafts where I got partway along, realized I did something wrong and had to back up and delete a bunch of stuff to fix it.

There were a couple of very wounded Leopards at the end, did we let them escape?
Hadn't thought about it but you're right. Let's assume they were caught, interrogated, and killed. Feel free to put questions together for the interrogation.

Can we deactivate and reuse the Banshee Fucker?
I think they are single use but I'm happy to be corrected if it's been stated otherwise.

@eaglejarl

Could we have an FP for winning that fight?

Also, the FP total should be adjusted for the plan.
Right you are. Will do later today.

Goddaaaaamn that's busted
Yeah, @Paperclipped pointed out the same thing. A couple things to note:

* The Leopards get +AB on all physical skills simply for being born in the right skin. No action economy, no chakra cost, every physical roll always.

* In order to get that +3 AB for themself, a dog needs:

- to have at least 3 dogs in the zone
- to spend a (possibly Reflexive) Supplemental
- to pay 72 chakra in order to cast at Effect 6 so that they can keep 3 tags and give 3 to someone else. Remember, this is a pack-oriented jutsu. You can't empower yourself more than you empower anyone else. You can't even keep 3 and give 1 to each of 3 other people.
- and they are tags, so single use (granted, you generate more next round)

You can also use multiple castings to collect those 3 tags, but then you are spending more actions and more chakra.

Granted, someone or someones else can pay the costs and give you the tags. Still, the costs are there.

So, yes. Very powerful but not as insane as it might seem.

[X] Action Plan: Come and Fucking Get Some
  • Cancurunchu really wants us to stay and dig in? seriously?
    • ok, watch this!
  • Kage Bushin no jutsu!
    • Start setting up an absurd trap array murderguantlet of death
    • Prime always works while staying in the zone with the troop, protected by Cancurunchu. SCs do the work on the perimeter.
  • Resupply
    • Prime replaces any expended seals on the dogs, make sure we have new CATEARS+MARS chains set up.
    • Spend a FP to have grabbed some spare Banshee Fuckers from Noburi, and Implosions/Firelog Macerators/ect from Kagome.
  • Set up a trap array.
    • Select a killing field where most nearby zones lack terrain that can provide cover from explosives.
      • If a zone is almost coverless, a dog or SC will clear stray bits of cover.
      • Make sure our troop has abundant cover from ranged/AoE attackers, using MEW(or Force Walls) as needed. less dodgy or melee-only dogs don't need to expose themselves until the perimeter is breached.
      • drop some substitution targets, especialy behind/near cover.
    • Skyslicers and force wall traps are great.
      • hard to detect even with Hazou's low trapmaking skill, they'll kill less skilled attackers on the approach, and might kill wounded veterans trying to flee.
    • Bury/scatter goo bombs and implosion seals, starting in surrounding zones and working your way out.
      • Set up ARS/MARS triggers so we can either "Goo-then-Pop" specific zones, or set off a pair in every zone all at once. But prepare multiple seperate chains of "hit all zones", so we can use that trick more than once.
      • Leopards seem happy to wait and stalk while their allies fight. once we think we've picked up an audience(have Cancurunchu give a callout?), goo and implode all the watching Leopards.
      • Consider burying a few implosion seals with motion-triggers at the very edge of the perimeter. any curious Leopard that notice them will dig them up and get exploded, thus teaching them to not dig/mess with the seals.
    • Consider making a large ring of spikes with BRI, then hiding a ring of skyslices/Force Walls inside and/or above the BRI ring.
      • Leopards can jump our BRI barrier pretty easily, but it should visually obscure that the ground they're jumping into is full of nearly-invisible death.
    • Set up a series of ~4 Skytowers, so that the dogs can extract to a safe height by jumping up them in acending order.
      • Set up a MARS chain of explosives/Firelog Macerators/whatever to destroy the lower towers so the Leopards can't follow.
      • If we get beseiged by ovewhelming numbers, we can get back to Dog by leapfrogging skytowers.
      • Suggest Canzappu use a skytower as an elevated firing position. make sure to add cover/fortifications.
        • He can also serve as lookout from this position
    • Hazoupilot has lived with Kagome for years. they have plenty of ideas and refinements. do those.
    • Scatter a MARS chain of explosives and Firelog Macerators everywhere we put other seals. when we leave, we'll burn this place to the fucking ground to avoid leaving seals behind.
  • Cackle like a madman.
  • Dissmiss SCs to consolidate Chakra
    • Get ready activate traps and Punch. Some. Face.

I like your vibes but I thoroughly disagree with using shadow clones here.

This is exactly the situation where SCs are called for.

We need to set up the trap array ASAP, before we get jumped.
Hazou isn't adding much value as a primary combatant when he's with a troop of melee-specialist dogs that buff each other like crazy.

Cancurunchu foxguards Prime while he's setting up, them prime hides in an elevated fortified box, so he's pretty safe. if he gets attacked by a high-level ranged attacker, he RRB+subs behind prepared cover and stays there.

Also, if we're digging in, we really want more chakra-efficiant ranged attacks, which means throwing seals. It won't get the Jounin, but the others will get hit eventually, or burn all their FP rerolling.

I agree that many suggestions of "just fight with SC" are ill-considered, but I think this plan is exactly the situation where SC is called for.
But if you still disagree, please explain why so the plan can be improved.

hmmmm, are there any low-CR dogs present?

It would be really helpful to make a one-off contract and to go to Noburi for a chakra top-up, but if all the dogs present cost 200+ chakra, there isn't much point.

If not, could we spend an FP to have included a young-adult dog with low CR, or a small low-CR noncombatant(in an armoured backpack protected by force claws)?

Sorry! It wasn't meant as criticism! I should have guessed that's what it meant.

Great, will do.

I also think they're single use. But was willing to hope otherwise.

as solitary creatures we could ask why the leopards are even obeying their clan boss at all. instead of just giving lip service and when they aren't being watched just doing whatever they want. does their clan boss have a history of executing for disobedience? cannai has said he can sense all of dog territory but surely there must be limits. we haven't seen clan bosses act like panopticons. we even know leopards disobey, they kill each other in their packs.

Bah, it's less combat-optimal, but unstagnation is unstagnation. how's this look?

  • Cackle like a madman.
  • Dissmiss SCs to consolidate Chakra
    • Get ready activate traps and Punch. Some. Face.
If EJ says we can get someone present with <150 CP, I'll also add in a trip to Noburi to refill.

also can we give them a trial and a chance to defend themselves before we execute them? they probably won't have a good reason, but there is a reason we give people trials even when they probably don't have a good reason in modern times.

SCSA - Scenery Clone Seal Array
SSSA - Silence Shell Seal Array

[X] Action Plan: A Murdering of Leopards
Word Count: <499
  • Declare (-1 FP) that Hazou has Kagome's entire stockpile of SCSA and SSSA, plus what Kagome was able to scribe during our preparation time, and the remaining Banshee Fuckers, minus one for Kei (4 total).
  • Replace any expended seals on the Dogs, make sure we have CATEARS+MARS chains ready.
    • Give everyone chakdar
  • Sanity check the interrogation with Cancurunchu.
    • Run our list of questions by him, are we missing anything?
    • Hazou thinks that offering to spare whichever Leopard gives more information might get better results.
      • However, they weren't on their way to attack our pack. So if Cancurunchu isn't inclined to spare one. There's no need.
      • We'd need to prevent them from warning anyone that we're coming for them specifically.
  • Interrogate the wounded Leopards, most Intimidating Dog takes point.
    • Separate them, then if Cancurunchu approved, exploit their self-interest -- promise to let whoever gives the most information live.
      • What was your target in Dog?
      • How many Leopards are in the area?
      • How far away are they?
      • How many jounin/chunin/genin equivalent warriors are there?
        • Any ranged fighters?
      • Are there any settlements/encampments nearby?
    • Let whoever cooperates more live, but injure/restrain them so they can't warn anyone.
    • Blindfold the living Leopard, and leave the executed Leopard in a trapped Zone with SCSA/SSSA/skyslicers on the Zone border. Any potential rescuers will get sliced.
  • Based on the intel/chakra levels of the Dogs, present the following combat scenarios to Cancurunchu
    • Plan A - Retreat to the Dog to rest/recover chakra, leaving behind traps -- skyslicers on the boundary of a SCSA would be almost impossible to spot.
      • Set up invisible observation posts on the border with Shadow Clones/telescopes/SCSA/skytowers to detect the counterattack. Charge out to meet them, or set additional traps and wait.
        • Make sure to refill from Nobs at check-in
    • Plan B - Dig in here, fortify with skyslicers, Force Walls, SCSA, SSSA, Goo Bombs/Implosion Seals
      • If possible, set up the team in a Zone with cover, surrounded by Zones without cover, trapped with Goo Bombs/Implosion Seals
      • Disguise our traps using SCSA
      • Place skyslicers close to Zone borders -- make sure the Dogs know the safe routes
      • In the team's Zone, Hazou can go up 30 meters on a skytower and spot with a telescope, covered by the SCSA
    • Plan C - Go hunting for a Leopard camp based on the intel we got, tunnel underneath it from a safe distance away to maintain surprise. Then pop out and start killing.
  • Follow Cancurunchu's lead and go with whatever he thinks is best.
    • But, unless there are very few Leopards nearby, push for Plan C, or plan A if we don't have a good target.
      • Staying static against an unknown force seems incredibly risky.
  • Unsummon upon taking a Medium Consequence or fighting a clearly lost battle.
  • When it's time to camp, use SCSA + SSSA to disguise it.
