I say give Feldrake to Lizzy. She's is the type of person who would horrifically murder people with bugs; and has a base occult of 4. Feldrake grants her a passable Occult Score and hefty Martial Boost.

Also if Janna and Lizzy are assigned to a quest Lizzy's Autistic Ass will not notice the bickering as an issue she should address.

Even if Janna can find a new artifact to replace Felldrake, she would not learn anything and make the artifact bear the heavy brunt, again. She would become like the Glooms, her unknown nemesis, that are average witches that only are powerful thanks to over-reliance on magical artifacts. Even Tom agrees that Janna tends to rely on the staff too much.

I say we should have Janna spend the next few turns doing nothing but training her magic before Feldrake's bonus is removed. Janna needs to be as prepared as possible when she has a rematch with the Sandersons. So, I advise we have her borrow the Mad Mojo Cookbook from Tobe, and have her study Dance Magic. Both of these would improve her magical abilities and address a weakness brought up in Twelfth Night that she is reliant on dark magic.

What?

I am pretty sure Janna will learn shit by the time she gets a new Artifact. It's called, you know, a character arc.

Also wtf does that have to do with Givin the Goose Staff to Lizzy, I just want to see Janna and Feldrake bicker while Lizzy somehow becomes an Occult Unit. For the Funnies.

Getting a focus isn't replacing Feldrake with another Feldrake. It's replacing Feldrake with Janna casting magic with her own skill and knowledge.

Well that was fun.

No significant damage, a very pleasant surprise.

The Sandersons being a Problem is massively mitigated by them not being specifically our problem. Although I do hope no one manages to track them back to us, as I strongly suspect they are going to be kicking holes in the magic specific Masquerade. Them taking the book… meh. There are other magics Janna can peruse and other relics she can steal.

Janna losing Feldrake (gradually) is a blow, but she was useful before she was a mage and this is an opportunity for growth. Might need to put that on the back burner depending on how quickly we find Star.
Speaking of, Hunt for Star/Search for Star is an Intrigue action and it just became our highest priority Intrigue action for next turn. Possibly the next several turns.

We know little about Celena mechanically as yet but from the look of things she is going to be awesome. Not without a few crippling issues but still a lot better than what we have been working with.

Trying to improve Malf is quite likely a lost cause and almost certainly not work the effort. BUT! Doof's development from trying to improve Malf will absolutely be worth every action.

All in all I think we came out ahead on this one.

I will note that with Janna its not just a case of needing a focus anymore. Her Pride is on the line, and if we don't somehow nip this in the bud explicitly or help her do it; she will do it on her own.

This might be more of an issue. I'm…not sure who else we could offload it onto? My gut says Kitsune (mainly because I don't think we have a better option)
Mine says specifically not Kitsune. Feldrake can be assigned to anyone who is either more evil than his current user, or more magically powerful. Kitsune is both, which means that if we give Feldrake to her we can't give him back to Janna later. We should pick someone who is either more powerful than Janna and nicer than her, or more evil than Janna but less powerful than her.

Also we should fix Feldrake's avatar so he's less cranky.

Something to note regarding Feldrake, from the Behold Your Stuff post:
Feldrake will only accept reassignment to a new hero that is either more evil and at least a little magical or at least a little evil and more magically potent than his current wielder!
Depending on what Feldrake considers evil we might not have any valid candidates at all. Lizzy is antisocial but doesn't really fit the 'evil sorcerer' theme. The QMS has the issue that they are already trying to get their own brands of magic to fit together and Feldrake probably doesn't want to be a glorified widget that the minion of the group waves about. Kitsune should qualify… except we have her on a redemption arc to become a better person.

Honestly if it wasn't for the Donald quest I would propose we gift/sell Feldrake to a Morganian.

I will note that with Janna its not just a case of needing a focus anymore. Her Pride is on the line, and if we don't somehow nip this in the bud explicitly or help her do it; she will do it on her own.
We are rarely so lacking in options as that. Throw her into finding Star. Get her therapy and other magic to practice.
Just because she will go after them eventually doesn't mean we can't push 'eventually' back a very long way. Hopefully long enough that when the rematch happens she has has Marco, Tom, Star and the assembled ghost queens of Mewni as her backup.

Odd Jobbers triggers, so QMS have 99% CoS with XP versus Jumba's ~89ish% and QMS avoids the learning specialization penalty. They're better on it which is good on an action we want to minimize failure as much as possible
Oh well, if we can't Psychoanalyze, then we should do Chat With Bossman and have Lizzy spend time with her. If one fails the other still has a chance of succeeding. Also, if we can cultivate Lizzy and Janna's friendship, we can task Lizzy with keeping an eye on Janna. That way if Janna goes after the Sandersons alone, Lizzy could give her some backup. Kitsune could also serve as an alternative.
Get her therapy and other magic to practice.
We have at least two other forms of magic available to us, ninja magic and dance magic. Janna should train in both to reduce her reliance on dark magic, which will help against enemies that are resistant like in Twelfth Night. As a bonus it will give her magic that the Sandersons can't as easily counter like they could if she just has Feldrake.

You know what, I am okay with these results.

"Buh-bye!" Mary said happily, as the three strode off into the… midafternoon.

A moment later Winnifred apparently decided that wasn't dramatic enough, and conjured some hellfire to mark their passing.

Jumba and Janus attempted to start clapping.
Again, Jumba and Janus are the only ones here with a proper appreciation for Evil.

Feldrake glowered without moving at all. "What were you thinking?!?"

Janna frowned. "Hey, look, we got the guy-"

"SHE got the guy!" Feldrake said, not glancing at Celena.
Actually, I'm gonna have to give this one to Burd. Without them, this whole mess wouldn't have been cleaned up yet.

Felldrake is trying to teach something to Janna, after all she disregard his advice three times in a consecutive roll with disastrous consequences.

Like his opinion is not something permanent, he straigh call this "tough love". So as long Janna show progress in the magical arts, Felldrake will probably grant rewards in other areas.

Besides, I like the dynamic between both. If we remember he once call Janna his best apprentice he ever have and he say it would be a honor to put her skull on his throne room, heck even Leopold call her "mommy". So while giving him to another Hero Unit would be a quick advantage, I can't help but feel we would miss some sort of hidden bonus that Janna can unlock if she overcome this challenge impose by him.

Yeah. Feldrake going to someone else isn't really a serious option.

Janna rolled a nat one, caused a disaster, and made bad choices.

The consequence is that Feldrake is upset and doesn't want to be her crutch anymore. He wants her to do better. And so will stop helping her spell casting as much.

If she improves enough to meet Feldrakes satisfaction then things probably go back to normal. Most likely. I hope so.

The whole Janna spellcasting situation has a pretty straightforward solution open to us:

Step 1: Take the "Contact the Morganians" (or the Merlinians if you're boring) Action and get one of them as a contractor/liason

Step 2: Take the "Study Magical Traditions" Action with the Morganians as a reliable source

Step 3: Have Janna study it

Now, that is not a quick solution (we're talking three actions here assuming no failures), but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

To be fair, Feldrake does strike me as the type of mentor who would describe all his apprentices as either "The greatest apprentice he ever had", "the worst apprentice he ever had" or "The most average apprentice he ever had", with no inbetweens.

Well, that was hilarious. Perfect classic After-school Shenanigans. I love it. And it didn't even end THAT badly, even if we do now need to get Janna some help before shecd8es something stupid.

"...I've only had three apprentices."

They're roving. That's good, but only specifically for us. They're immortal. That's bad, but only for everyone ever. So I think we technically came out ahead?

Janna's going to have her work cut out for her to remove her own immortalizing.
They've still got the misspelling bird with them, so maybe they'll manage to take themselves out at some point?
"...I've only had three apprentices."
"And they were all the worst!"
