she will need a good gas mask... or a power armor, just in case.
on that note, do we have any option for researching Life support devices and such? would go great with the space program.

Eh. I see it as a straight advantage.

Ludivine's trait is problematic because there's a real danger when we put her on many of the most appealing actions for her that she'll fuck off and invent Flubber tech instead and suddenly we're a pariah.

Janna's trait never actually makes things worse except in the case of a critical failure (which screws us over anyway). It usually makes things a little better, since lower DCs are pretty much pure benefit for us.

The difference here is that Ludivine´s trait is "dangerous" in a malleable way that´s dependent on in-universe fluff. Flubber only turned into the public boogeyman we shy away from tackling despite its huge energy-economic boons because A) Uncle Same decided to use a supposed Flubber-related containment breach to cover up frigging GalFed turning Hawaii into a prison/nature preserve and B) Doom decided to piggyback on that strawman in order to hinder our scientific progress. By themselves neither Ludivines trait nor Flubber would be inherently detrimental.

On the other hand, a critical fail being BAD NEWS is an inherent mechanic of the game system itself, so not malleable at all outside some very specific contexts.

That being said, I do agree that Jannas improved trait is a net gain for us despite all this.

Can't we solve flubber/ludivine problem by taking personal action to forbid research on it? We removed several heroes from rolodex like this, we probably can remove undesirable actions too.

Janna's trait has changed to "I Got a Little Bored, so I Tried Something New"
Acquiring a non-sentient, permanent Focus for Janna can now remove her Non-Practicing Practitioner trait!
Janna has gained 2 Occult!
Kitsune has gained 1 to all her stats.
Lizzy refused to leave until she had been told how the bugs work. She gains an Occult score of 4!
All in all a very nice interlude and some nice haul from it.

The change to Janna's trait is nice, still kind of a risk to put her on Nationals but a DC reduction is honestly not bad at all if it happens (and if the Crit fail happens better a 15 DC increase that the crit fail that would had happened).
A boost her Occult is always welcome.
Kitsune got a general boost to her stats, if we send Janna, Lizzie and her to a quest she is the best option as the quest leader (best or second best in all categories).
For Nationals actions she would be our best Diplomat if her loyalty wasn't in the negative.
Lizzie having an Occult score probably won't help us in the short term but its something that I like considering who she is friends with. Also magic insects is a line that might have interesting results in the future.

For the Focus for Janna if its not a Pa the ways I see its to either Reach out to Magical New York and see if we can buy one or continue the Feldrake quest and see if we find one in one of the caches.

Ludivine did that already actually, when her trait caused her to abandon a project and take up a different one.
thats the Climate Controlled Environments, not life support, but i can see why you say that, it being good to keep life in space. i mean more in the space suit/escape pod/medical device vein, not a whole complex. Though if we do get something like that, it will be interesting.
also, im curious if Lizzy could build her own power armor?

Janna's focus will be a new personal action I think. Or the quest thing if we don't do the personal. Either works.

How many turns of using Tom do we have left this year? Probably not questing next turn but the turn after that we could put Janna, Marco, Tom, Kitsune, and Lizzy on the next stage of the world tour.

How many turns of using Tom do we have left this year?
We only have 1 more use of Tom for this year (1 use resting from the quest and 1 use searching for star).

Also I don't think we can use Tom on the Feldrake quest, he can only be used for actions directly related to searching for Star or going against Toffee and the Feldrake world tour I don't think fits into either of those.

"I dunno. It's hard to describe, but… what happened over in New York was real. It's kinda sinking in that I might have to start taking things seriously or suffer the consequences. I'm the most powerful mage Doof has right now that isn't just likely to disappear for two weeks at random. ...no offense. Me! I don't know if that'll last forever, but right now I am legitimately the best defense this company has to offer, and this company is my best chance of eventually shoving that lizard's tail so far up his own…
The awkward process of growing up.

A third time Kitsune traced the circle and a triangle within it, then a line bisecting them both. She crowned the line with a shape like a hat, and then finished the shape with two diagonal lines in the very center. The moment she touched the rune, the paper folded in on itself like an origami swan and burst into an orb of floating light.
She has the knowledge of the Knee.

Lizzy refused to leave until she had been told how the bugs work. She gains an Occult score of 4!
Yeah that makes sense. She isn't the type to get all hung up about the whole magic=/=technology thing.

Janna's trait has changed to "I Got a Little Bored, so I Tried Something New"
Janna is not exactly easily distracted, but she rarely chooses to bash her head against something that does not hold her interest. When Janna is assigned to a National Action, roll 1d6. On a 6, Janna does not complete the action as it proves insufficiently engaging for her. Instead, she approaches DEI's problems from a different angle. If the action would not have been a critical failure, a random Occult action in your action pool has its DC reduced by 10. If the action would have been a crit failure, a random Occult action in your action pool increases its DC by 15 instead.
An improvement. Technically. Still not remotely worth the one-in-six chance of losing an entire action.

Maybe she initially botched the OH Glyph, making it *become* a Bill Glyph, which Kitsunes super-strong wards immediately took offense to and caused the paper to combust in retaliation?

Like a translation/transcription error that causes editorial control to take offense because now the word is "naughty", you know?
I mean, there might be some weird interaction there even if everything goes right. Bill is a thing of the two dimensional, pseudo-Platonic World of Forms. If you are drawing power into our own higher dimensional plane through at least a mocking of more base, lower dimensional physics... however his shit actually works... your path is meandering too close to his. By accident or intent, it doesn't matter, because he might see you.

Bill wasn't involved. Kitsune messed up the light glyph for the same reason that a flashlight will get messed up if it's struck by lightning. Not all triangles are Bill.

Taking a simple piece of paper, Kitsune marked out a circle, then a large flat triangle within it. Before she could finish it, however, the paper caught alight and flared into a blaze. Kitsune tried twice more, each time creating a heatless flame before she could even finish the strokes.

...

A third time Kitsune traced the circle and a triangle within it, then a line bisecting them both.
That would have been the fourth time, not third.

What's your Focus?
What's your Focus?

"What's in the box?" Marco asked as Janna snuck into the company break room holding onto a long box.

"What box?" Janna said extremely convincingly as she cut the tape from the box.

"That box, the one you're opening right now," Marco pointed, exasperated already by Janna's Antics.

Janna ignored the question opening the box instead.

"Is that a Narwhal horn?" Marco asked incredulously.

"What?" Janna asked confused. "Of course not. Narwhals aren't real. They're an imaginary creature Star made up. This... is a Unicorn horn! I got it from a source in Oregon from a contact in the New York Occult underground. Seller calls themselves "Grenda the Gozarian." and they really hate Unicorns for some reason."

"That's because Unicorns are assholes," Marco replied, rubbing his butt cheek in memory. "Day-Glo Lisa Frank-style assholes."

"Lisa Frank is a Unicorn?" Janna asked, surprised.

"Yes," Marco replied. "And they're all like her. Stuck up snooty jackasses."

"That explains why the horn was so cheap," Janna nodded. "Grenda must have hunted this one out of Vengeance."

"Seems likely," Marco agreed. "So why did you buy a unicorn horn?"

"Focus," Janna replied.

"You know that snorting ground up unicorn horn won't help you focus, right? That's just a rumor that a Talking horse back in Ireland started a couple of years back to get people to hunt unicorns."

"Not that kind of focus, Marco!" Janna chided. "A magical focus!"

"Janna, there's nothing magical about drug addiction. Even if the drug doesn't actually work. maybe especially if-"

"Marco, I'm not planning on snorting ground up unicorn horn."

"What are you planning to do with it then?"

Janna cocked her head in thought.

"You know... I'm not sure yet?" she replied, almost as if surprised by her own response. "I wanted to make it into like, a wand or something to use as a magical focus to cast spells, but... now that I see it... I kind of want to figure out if I can use it to stab people."

Marco's hand unconsciously went back to his right butt cheek, covering it in fear of some remembered pain.

"Don't do that. Unicorn horns are terrible for stabbing people with."

Janna looked straight into her friend's eyes. "Marco," she began. "You, are a terrible liar."

Marco's eyes widened in shock, but before he could reach out to stop her, Janna had grabbed the horn and dashed out the door.

"Damn it," Marco muttered. "I probably need to invest in some armored Pants now, don't I?"

The End.

Didn't they say it's only do lights and music?
Yeah, they did, but it's not like Unicorns are any sort of reliable source. But even if that's true? Juniper could definitely use a focus that makes lights and music. This isn't meant to actually be Janna's focus. The point of this Omake was to establish a couple things:

1. Janna and Marco still hang out.
2. Grenda is still alive and kicking ass.
3. Janna's looking for a Focus.
4. Janna doesn't realize Narwhals are real because she was in public school, has a learning of 7, and her only exposure to them is through Star's Narwhal blast.
5. Marco once got stabbed in the butt by a Unicorn; and
6. Unicorns are Jerks; and
7. Lisa Frank is a Unicorn and that's why she's an abusive Jerk.
