Genocidal monsters come AFTER omnicidal monsters on the threat scale and as such can be employed to stop greater threats. Good pr is generally considered part of the compensation package.

Threats to existence
Threats to varyingly smaller cosmological spaces (toffee / phobos if not counterbalanced)
Threat to planet (bill)
Threat to all sentient life on planet (demona)
Threat to one specific type of life form (huntsclan)
Mass murderers
Spree killers
...
People who talk in the theater.
The price of being able to use the hunt as disposable troops is that if they win they gain an XP level.
Which makes them give more XP when destroyed in turn.
All part of the plan.
I wouldn't classify the Huntsclan as an acceptable evil by any definition, any attempt to use them will most likely blow up in our faces and make them stronger. Also Bill is 10000% a threat to existence.

Kitsune, for some reason, stopped short the instant she entered the room, fists clenching and glamor flickering for a brief moment. Owen, obviously confused by her behavior, looked at her for a moment. Focused on the oncoming disaster, Janna didn't catch more than that.

"Hey, Xanatos? You should probably-"

"Know that Demona's disappeared from the battlefield and is making her way here? I'm well aware, but thank you for the information. The tide of battle is turning outside, the Huntsclan managed to make a decisive push against the horde and nearly rout them. I am moderately disappointed to find them exceeding my expectations."

"Disappointed?" Lizzy asked.

"I was happy for the assistance, but I will admit a certain willingness for them to spend their lives I would not accept for my own men." Xanatos continued. "Regardless. Demona encountered a squadron of Iron Gargoyles several minutes ago, but I have little doubt she'll outwit them. The Pack are also enroute, though they have taken a less… cautious approach, and are paying dearly for it."

Ok, did I miss something or di Kitsune just appear with no fanfare at all? I know that she´s sneaky, but that whiplash still annoys me.

So, Xanatos had vaguely the same plan/expectations for the Huntsclan than me at least: be good enough stall for a bit, but otherwise getting uttterly butchered. With that in mind, them completly stomping all opposition is actually kinda annoying from a PR and planing standpoint.

"We won't fight you, Brooklyn." Lexington said softly.

Brooklyn clenched his teeth for a moment, and then looked away.

Janna Diplomacy Check: Perform some quick self-reflection
DC 80
97+6+26-5=124
Success!

A wave of nausea passed over Janna as she watched four old friends being torn apart. The snarling, raging brutes outside had been easy to fight. They were monsters, all too easy to compare to that monster. But these gargoyles spoke, they cried, they… mourned. Janna remembered the sound of tortured screams and scraping bones. Those were all… people...

"Still too weak to face your old friends?" Demona asked Brooklyn, snapping Janna out of what could have been a very poorly timed spiral. The spear Demona carried began to glow with a blinding white light.

"Then I'll do it myself."

Welcome to the truth abot war, Janna:

"The Enemy" isn´t just a bunch of targets you can mow down at your leisure, they are people just like you, with hopes and dreams of their own.

After this Crisis we definitely might wanna sic Technor on her bc of budding PTSD.

Huh. I mean... its not good, but how bad is up in the air. The mechanics for how such an instrument like this would function would be fascinating: First you have the narrative weight humanity gives the civilization, and narrative is magic, and then we have whatever the act of drawing the blood of the mortal-ish vessel of El Shaddai actually did in the first place. Which was something, relics like the Arma Christi had power, but none of them were toppling cities or civilizations in the first century AD.

We've put a lot more weight on it in recent decades, weaving its mystique into something menacing but by itself it should have similar inherent might to, say, the pillar Christ was whipped upon. There are at least full claimants for the title of Lance of Longinus out there and I wonder if any of them would operate this way. Rome, Austria, Armenia, and Antioch.

I wonder if they're each a divided part of the original Longinus. Presumably, Big G didn't want the spear that killed his son wandering around at full power and cut it up on the conceptual level.

By the way, does anyone know where that list of DVV Space properties is? I know it was posted a few hundred pages ago but I don't remember unique key words to isolate the post. I remembered and rewatched a Disney series that I think would make a pretty interesting optional inclusion for the general DVV Space module (meaning not our Gridlocked-Space fusion) and want to check if it is already in or not.

Would make sense...

One bit of the Lance corresponding to each facet of the Holy Trinity...wonder if the one Demona is carrying would be the one corresponding to The Son...

You know, if the Longinus is around, I wonder if that means that the individual bits of the Crown of Thorns hold any power. While the full crown plundered from Constantinople after the 4th Crusade is held in France at the moment, individual thorns from it were given out as holy gifts to be consecrated and treasured before the 4th Crusade happened.

There are plenty of other artifacts as well, such as the Shroud of Turin, which bears the image of Christ, or the thirty pieces of silver Judas was paid to betray Jesus.

Those thorns apparently come from a plant native to northern Europe so I'm sceptical they were used for a crucifixion in Judea.

Well yeah. I'm sceptical any of the holy artifacts are actually from where they say they are (or any artifact in general). What they are like in the real world is irrelevant, since fiction tends to have "sacred artifacts" be very much a real deal with real power.

If they do have real power then they are probably already in the possession and protection of a magical faction. Possibly the real relics are in a hidden vault of the Vatican while fakes are put on display. Perhaps some other group acquired them and replaced the originals with fakes.

Perhaps so, but somehow Demona managed to steal this one.

The point remains that if the Holy Lance or whatever really does exist and actually is a magically powerful implement, Demona can- somehow! obtain it and use it, in principle.

Magic runs on narrative, metaphor, and stacking symbolism beneath a trenchcoat until you're tall enough to trick the universe's physical laws into looking the other way for you. I feel like all three potential Lances have power at this point, whether any of them are real, or - through paradox shenanigans even the Heavenly Host are prey to - all three are.

We knew the Huntsclan winning a PR victory was a potential consequence of this.
I mean, the huntsclan already won a PR victory just for showing up, and I don't think this specific choice mattered too much for that. The only way we would have changed that imo is if we immediately curb stomped the pack and then the horde in rapid succession, because they would have attacked the other one while we were tied up dealing with the first.

I'm actually happier that we left to go help Xanatos now because now we're not associated with the Huntsclan on live TV.

They technically might be able to work parallel to us in fighting Toffee and Bill's cultists, but that is in no way a "good" thing. We have no way to control them, and they aren't going to focus just on those big three when there is also an entire planet to purge. Any armistices with them are incredibly short-term (meaning individual battles and not entire wars), and likely benefit their PR even more.
it is literally a good thing to have more forces fighting parallel against toffee or dorito because there is no force on earth that is their peer other than those two. Without more parallel fighters, the world ends.

this is, when it kicks off, an existential war for earth against magical creatures. We'll have some nasty groups "on our side" but frankly this isn't a situation that should be paralleled to existing wars because, you know, there have been no extradimensional invasions that threaten to wipe our plane of existence (and planet, as a part of that plane) off the map.

The show also has at least one noted instance of a huntsclan member getting redeemed. I'm not a huge fan of the trope, but ultimately these are people. And while people are capable of monstrousness, how did Star Vs end? With Star deciding that all magic must be purged from reality for the good of all?

I'm saying there are at least two instances of shows in which they are either A) redeemable on an individual level or B) considered to be correct by the show

and if you read Gravity Falls a certain way that's a third that says "magic is best to be purged"

soooo. I duno. Militarized bigots are more helpful than civilians in an existential war against magic. We're not at a point we have to do anything but work against them. But they're useful, and predictable. If we can create safe havens for persecuted populations we should. They'll be increasingly necessary

Typically the Arma Christi number twenty, though there is some disagreement in depictions as to what specifically the twenty are. The big ones like the Lance are fairly universal but there are some that are only depicted sometimes.

Then there is the fact that some items of the Arma Christi were in fact collections of separate items, the thirty pieces as stated being one, or were divided right after the crucifixion or in the centuries to follow. Just the cross being splintered and divvied up should have resulted in several hundred to thousand relics. You should barely be able to go three feet without tripping over a holy relic assuming they don't just rot or rust like normal objects.

Ha! Looks like our allies cleaned up nicely. Huntsclan getting a PR boost is annoying, but manageable. If we spend a couple actions, we can either a) keep tabs on them, b) limit their growth, and/or c) start dismantling them entirely. I doubt we'll be able to completely wipe them out, but I bet we could put them in a position where they're no threat to anyone if we try hard enough.

Also, it seems Brooklyn's being an edgy little brat. Stupid kids. At least Broadway and Lexington have their heads on straight. Good for them.

Final note:

Uh, should I know this?

That doesn't clear anything up for m-

Oh. Oh. Ohhhhhh....

...

PEOPLE WANTED US TO DEAL WITH MOOKS WHILE DEMONA WAS FIGHTING XANATOS WITH A HOLY ARTIFACT?! I DON'T CARE IF HE HAS PUCK, THAT WILL NOT END WELL!!!!! POINT OF REFERENCE FOR HOW BS THESE THINGS CAN BE IN POPULAR CULTURE!!!!

Think of it this way: We're putting all the clowns under one tent which we can then set on fire at a later date.

There is nothing in Gargoyles canon about this artifact and in the real world there are three different relics that are claimed to be the Longinus: one in the Vatican, another in Vienna, another in Poland.

It's a good thing this setting isn't solely Gargoyles, then. Any other Disney products do something with this?
