If a single Rain ninja made it out, Akatsuki is at most twenty-four hours away from declaring war on Leaf. We need to beat them back home so that we don't return to find Leaf entirely levelled.
Without making any suggestions as to what you should be doing, I note that hypothetical Rain ninja would need around 5 days to make it to Rain if they skywalked the whole way in a straight line, probably a week or more if they follow a more realistic route that avoids going close to Leaf. If Akatsuki then needs to gather AMITY, retaliation could take much longer still.

Whereas, with Leaf being closer and having Noburi for refills, Hazou can make it back to Leaf in around 4 days.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped What is the status of the rift? Possibilities include:
  • The rift is closed.
  • The rift is open, but shows no signs of exploration.
  • The rift is open, and shows signs of exploration. No people are observed.
  • The rift is open, and shows signs of exploration. The people we killed are observed.
  • The rift is open, and another Akatsuki team is there. We are dead.

Yeah, I think our priorities should be something like:
  • Figure out whether the rift situation is critical. What's happening around the rift? Is there evidence Sasori was here? Do we expect Orochimaru to fiddle with it?
  • Estimate how quickly we can open a rift. If we can open it on the order of days, maybe we should snatch a body out for information.
  • Figure out how fast someone can run Hazō to Leaf. We can ride a summon. Tsunade can carry us. Take shifts between multiple options. Time is too expensive to do things the cheap way.

Knowing this Hazo should beline back to Leaf, quickly set up the Rune Force domes/Iron Earth Rune Then Akasuki can either track the party down or seige Leaf, but not both. Obvious counterpoint is the rune only last a week, so Hazo's gonna have to stay behind.
Makes the earth around the rune resistant to motion.

Takes around 30 seconds to activate. Anyone tunneling within around a kilometer needs to roll their tunneling technique (or Physique, if working by hand) against the user's Runecrafting.

Should we split the party? Hazo stays behind to defend Leaf, while Oro and co go rift diving by running off to Impossible To Find inc?

Then Akasuki has two problems each of which trades off against each other. They either can hunt for the S rank missing ninja gang or assault Leaf.

And Hazo can communicate to Oro through the 7th path, meaning rift notes can still be exchanged

Why would we try to race them back to our respective villages when we could instead hunt them down with Canvass and Shiba?

Hazō doesn't even need to be there. He can summon them, assign each to a Konoha hunter squad made from the assembled forces, and then keep paying their upkeep indefinitely with help from Noburi as he heads back to Leaf.

Just to check. What do we do if the rift isn't near to being open? Not open it right? Meaning no more rift race? (ie, no time limit) Can we send an assassin to nuke Sasori (or their seal masters) And then we get all the time in the world? (if they'll never be able to open the rift, we've got time)

Argument: we should move to destroy Rain, ASAP.

We landed inside a world where we overcommitted our forces to this assault. We got Deidara, and maybe one other member:
  • It wasn't Itachi (based on Deidara's inner monologue) or Konan (she wouldn't have died to the initial RER barrage).
  • It likely wasn't Kisame (or if it was, we should be able to confirm it by looking for the scroll, via e. g. ES).
  • It might've been Sasori or Hidan; potentially neither of them.
Itachi and Konan are definitely still alive, and likely Kisame too. This is very bad: Itachi has a varied suite of esoteric ninjutsu, potentially including space-warping techniques he copied off Conjura, which he might've shared with Kisame (if Itachi doesn't have the chakra to cast them himself).

Our default plan is to hole up in Leaf, erecting a FD over the village. Itachi + Kisame might be able to circumvent it using bullshit ninjutsu, ferrying other Akatsuki members with them as well. And in any case, I expect a FD would hold them up for, like, an hour: they'd quickly notice they can tunnel beneath it, breaking past the much-weaker Iron Earth defense. Past this point, they would do what we wanted to do to them: stage a massive attack, taking us by surprise, demolishing Leaf, instantly killing most of our forces, then mopping up the rest.

Arguably, we might be able to detect their arrival early using Ninja Radars. Erect a FD, recall all Leaf ninja within it to Leaf, kill all chakra beasts. Then, any approaching chakra signatures not in Leaf that the NRs detect would be Akatsuki members. This advance warning would let us summon Bosses and Sannin SCs. We should analyse this option's feasibility... But I'm a-priori skeptical: Konan plus Itachi plus Kisame plus Sasori, playing the role of attackers (making our main runic offensive, RERs, ~useless), and forewarned that we have some novel bullshit, likely win against this anyway. Not without loses, but they likely win.

This is before considering the possibility they recruit Rock or Cloud's jinchuuriki against us.

We need to thin out their numbers further, such that the above no longer holds: such that they don't auto-win a straight fight. Taking out Konan and one other member likely accomplishes that.

So: we should go to Rain, and repeat what we just did. Erect a FD and demolish the village, likely taking out at least Konan and one other Akatsuki in the process. That'd make the surviving Akatsuki group a pick of three or two out of {Itachi, Kisame, Sasori, Hidan}. Itachi-Kisame-Sasori would still be bad, but we likely win against any other possible group of survivors. In addition, it's pretty likely that at least Itachi or Kisame are at Rain, so the survivors would near-definitely be weak.

That said, Rain is a bigger target than the rift fortress; we can't guarantee that we would land a hit via RERs on any Akatsuki, since we wouldn't know where they are in the village. In addition, the village is likely swarming with tons of jounin, likewise not conveniently concentrated in one small location for a RER barrage to wipe them all out. The ground assault force, then, would be swamped with them...

As such, I tentatively suggest that we jump directly to Superchilling Rain.

(We'll need to come up with some way to disguise the effect from Oro: maybe just straight-up don't take him along on this mission, do it through Tsunade; outline our concerns regarding Oro's reaction, ask her to help cover for us, etc.)

Todoroki Shrine -> Leaf takes ~4 days to run. Oro will be slower because he needs to move the rift, which means Tsunade will be slower because she needs to keep him from running off.

The big question is: can we get the rift back to Leaf in 7 days or less?
the Shrine-to-Leaf run is ~700 miles as the ninja flies. Oro will need to make two runes every ~20 miles, for a total of 35 pairs of infusions. this initially will mean a 2-hour slowdown every 20 miles, but he'll quickly get veterancy reducing this to 1-hour, and eventually 30-min. I'll spitball the average at 1.5 hours, for a total 52-hours of delay.

So, yes, it look like we can get the whole Leaf contingent, Including Oro, Tsunade, and the Rift, back to leaf in under 7 days.

That said, this schedule dosen't leave us with a ton of slack for other things. It's important to Open the rift and see if we can grab a Jashinist scrub to ask which Akatsuki were onsite(and start testing for longer side effects of resurrection ASAP), but we don't want to spend any longer than necessary on it. we do also need to bury the superchiller DEEP and safely detonate it, and otherwise dismantle our runes, which can be done concurrenlty.

the QMs redid the Iron Earth mechanics. it now makes all contiguous earth as immovable as an active rune, effectively inviolable on any relevant human timescale.

EDIT: this may be false.
EDIT: but tunneling against a prepared force with Ninja-radar is still a bad idea.

Cool. I concur. Let's superchill Rain.

Yeah. That's what I don't get about the rush to Leaf. I'm expecting the siege to last no more than a day tops (the ground Rune is much weaker than the Force Dome). Add in all the bs ninja stuff, and I don't expecting Akasuki's inability to dig a 10 meter tunnel to be all that big of a bottleneck.

Takes around 30 seconds to activate. Anyone tunneling within around a kilometer needs to roll their tunneling technique (or Physique, if working by hand) against the user's Runecrafting. Every shift of failure causes the tunneling to take 1 step down the timeladder longer. Additional narrative effects at GM's choice. Lasts around a week.

It's just a physique check against runecrafting. And it's not like they're mining to China. They just want a few meter long tunnel to get past the force rune. You don't think they'll have a boss summon or someone else that can past a physique check?

Some people brought up in the discord that any Rain ninja who stayed that far away likely saw no details of the assault, possibly not even the force dome. They likely know the others died but most likely have no details is to the who or how.

According to Orochimaru's analysis and prior testimony, the most likely location of Konan and Kisame is "surveilling Leaf." Itachi was not onsite. It's pretty likely that Sasori was on site (how can you run the rift research without your primary research sealmaster?), was just sleeping / walking around outside the shield rooms, and simply died.

I doubt Hidan was onsite, since there is a Jashinist temple nearby (Todoroki Shrine?). He's probably there, Canvass might be able to hunt him down. Oro counters Hidan in a straight fight and that would let us get two guaranteed Akatsuki eliminations.

If Konan and Kisame are presently surveilling Leaf, rapidly returning to Leaf and ambushing them would be very time-efficient. We could ask Naruto via Neji (the Turtles) whether they are.

I think we should comb the ruins for evidence of slain Akatsuki, plus Canvass for Hidan and get Naruto's input re: the situation in Leaf, before committing to any strategic direction. There are too many unknowns and we don't actually have the command authority to order 30+ Leaf jounin to attack Rain.

I would argue, if we are going to EM Nuke Rune Rain, that we should bring Naruto in as a vanguard/distraction force while we EM Nuke Rune them. This way, we can take the mantle of Tenth Hokage, right before we EM Nuke Rune Leaf for killing Akane.

To doublecheck, these were covered in whatever our side did and everyone within is among the dead?
Some ninja exited shielded areas or dug their way out of the rubble with ninjutsu. The Jashinists tried to fight and were killed, the other ninja tried to run and were killed.

No one sees signs of the rift. Hazō and team currently suspect that it's somewhere under the rubble, but if it's closed then finding it will take considerable time with Kagome's sensory seals.

To be clear, it's a Physique check only if you're digging by hand, in which case... you're digging by hand. It's good that there's a ruling for that use case, but in practice digging a tunnel by hand is not going to be faster than even a jutsu that's been time laddered down 3-5 times. The use case that actually hurts us is "they have a fast tunneling jutsu that's high enough level to not be overly penalized."

Superchilling Rain is such a bloodlusted idea. And there's no way in the seven paths Orochimaru doesn't immediately deduce that a rune did it.

I dunno. My point is more I don't expect the seige to last very long as the tunnel they have to dig doesn't have to go very far. I give it almost certainly <1 week. With some real chance it'll be <24-48 hours. Do you disagree?

Hazou is now eligible to buy his second copy of the Akimichi Chakra Enhancement.

[X] Hazō Training Plan: Sorry Ino, It's Time To Go ACE
Akimichi Chakra Enhancement Technique [30 XP]

We will have enough XP to purchase this next update. Let's vote it in ASAP! I'd hate to accidentally set back our next instance date by delaying the purchase.
