On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

also something that maybe helps visualize the position of stuff at the beginning of the battle.

Say those Gas vents. Are they just a part of the picture or are there actually gas deposits in the area? Is it just carbon dioxide or do we have sulfur dioxide or chloride vents here? Asking cause that might actually be usefull in a century or two when the hold expands a bit and spreads settlements out in the area for resources.

Very least might imply some nice thermal springs in the region.

BATH HOUSES! WOOOOO!

Fun fact Sulfur Dioxide was used since the Roman era in wine production to help preserve the grapes and prevent vinegarization and smell. As well as a cleaning and sanitizing agent. Still is used for that. Hehehe you could call it the wine gas.

Plus would imply Sulfur deposits which could be very usefull in a millenia or two when gunpowder comes into the picture. But that's out of scope. For now I'll settle for hatching schemes to make a Hotspring Rune vote.

Hopefully some prospectors go by at some point! (I mean its dwarfs of course they will, but I hope we hear about it)

Anyway @soulcake how amused were you when Fjolla ended up with Double Talismans? I forgot to ask lol.

Well it says gas vent so it's probably not hydrogen sulfide. Because then it would just be an acid fog. So just it's either mostly carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Meaning potential springs. Or hydrogen sulfide meaning a sulfur deposit.

But I'm probably getting really out of topic with this so I will stop now.

It was funny.

Fjolla rolled 1 on a d2 and then 1 on a d5.

As for the gas vents imagine a chasm of pitch black stone dozens of meters deep. At the base, great cracks in the earth intermittently spew out jets of super hot gas and smoke hot enough and fast enough to carbonize flesh and bone and blow the resulting mass of carbon hundreds of meters into the air. If by some miracle you survive that, the gas itself is an odd concoction that is chemically hazardous to most forms of life and causes death in about a minute.

:^)

Hot springs...well eh, if you get them, it wont be through those things. >.>

Hmmmm

Hey @soulcake could you help clear up a tired train of thought I'm having?

So runes are, in essence, letters or occasionally sentences written in the dwarf language that have been imbued with magic right?

Would there be a way of creating Runic assembly lines by carving a rune into something and then forcing magic into it (using warpstone perhaps seeing as how its crystallized chaos/magic) so we dont have to faff about with rituals and costs?

Now of course this shouldn't put runesmiths out of a job due to quality issues with mass-production and perhaps a power cap system? (None of the more powerful runes can be mass produced and will require a Runesmith's services)
That way it can save valuable resources and Runesmith time for stronger runes.

Just a quick thought im entertaining at 3am cause sleep is becoming an alien concept

Theres a metaphysical component to rune making you cant remove/replace that requires a runesmith.

Ah Grimdark Gas Vents should have known. Ah, well gives us a chance to make some nice Airfried Troll Jerky after the fight atleast. But just means we gotta go looking. Who knows maybe our old masters list has a nice mineral spring on a middling role. A Brine Spring as a local source of salt or a Soda Spring just for the oddness of naturally carbonated water (those are real).

I like this because it implies that some Dwarf at some point stumbled across a slightly bubbly pond and became the first to try soda. Makes for funny visuals. Specifically of grumpy longbeards naysaying a soda machine because a proper dwarf seltzer comes from a natural spring.

Specialties: Talismanic Runes, Engineering Runes, Odd and Esoteric Runes.

Description: A large (for a dwarf) elder with an unbraided but exquisitely cared for beard as white as fresh snow over five dwarf lengths long that he keeps folded around his waist and looped over his belt. Wide in the arm from literal centuries spent forging Runes of power. Most often seen in a thick grey tunic, maille, dark red pants and a black belt with a hooded coat the same shade of red as his trousers over top.
Eeeeeeeeee! Descriptions and more info! Knew it was a good idea to go looking here.

E: And more descriptions for our rolly pollies!

Allies/Retainers:
Apprentice: Fjolla Stokkisdottir
Titles: Firebrand. Goldy-Locks
Age: 55 Years by Dwarf reckoning
Specialty: Talismanic Runes (Exceptional)
Description: Your grandniece, a plaitling who stands taller than most dwarfs her age, pretty with light blonde hair. She wears clothes in a style similar to her granduncle when not in training gear. A spitfire of a young lady, and though a few decades of apprenticeship have humbled her somewhat, that inherent drive and natural talent remain. After decades spent training the girl you're sure of it now, she's a prodigy on track to being on par with some of the greatest Runelords you've personally met.
Apprentice: Dolgi Embermane
Titles: Ruby-head
Age: 60 Years by Dwarf reckoning
Specialties: Weapon Runes, Engineering Runes.
Description: A shy and otherwise unremarkable young lad with a mane of deep crimson hair so striking that he often sticks out like a sore thumb in even the thickest crowds. At the advice of his fellow apprentice, he has taken to wearing turquoise blues and white to compliment his hair. You've gotten a good amount of the remaining shyness out of him, leaving a naturally quiet and hardworking individual. While he looks lacklustre compared to your other apprentice, it pays to remember Dolgi is well above average in terms of skill and talent. Only looking worse when compared to an actual prodigy.

Pretty good I missed this one.

Picking the option to be the odd dwarf, I'd think he'd be the one to start developing odder eating habits than his teacher.

Seeing him all decked out in armor and with a grudge reminds me of doom slayer. A dwarf inspired Doom Slayer is quite awesome to imagine.

A dwarf all decked out in rune and gromril bling rips and tears daemons for eternity to fulfill a grudge.

So as a team, we're at our best working on Engineering or Talismanic runes. Given that the hold apparently has a shortage of Bolt and Grudge Throwers the former is something maybe we can hope to put to work?

"-You are by tradition, at least until a council of the eldest members of the hold decides the kingship, the ranking Lord, Rhunrikki." the youngster finishes.

You blink.

This is what you get for not paying enough attention to the local politics you suppose.
Heh! Just realized this on the re-read but we're basically the oldest Elder in the entire Hold so we'll have a standing invite to this discussion if we care to make an appearance. I'm actually semi tempted, mostly so that we can see the king candidates, and then pick one we can make the best with Runework.

Doom slayers armor does have a max of three runes...

[X] The rear

Feels like we skipped to the endgame of this quest because damn, a troll that feasts on Khornate and Tzeentchian daemons to basically become a Daemon Prince Troll is some high-level shit for our first boss battle.
