On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

so would Snorri willingly go to ask former king Otrek to join his hearthguard temporarily to spread his elderly wisdom among the foolish beardlings as a way to spend his time now that he is soon to no longer be king? then said former king is surprised as he finds a new calling and no longer feels the call of Gazul?

Nope. Only once he dies does he truly stop being the king. Gloin would never truly be the legitimate ruler, but rather a place holder.

A Dwarf King needs to die in order to abdicate.

Isn't the Runelord meeting coming up in Turn 41/42? That also takes up an action. We are lucky that we get our action from the Hold founding back. Otherwise we couldn't have fulfilled the Gazul commission. (if my math isn't off.)

41. This turn we are finishing off the Valayan armors, next turn is 4 actions into Gazul armor and one action for the meeting. Then the turn after that, we finish the Gazul armors and Defense in the Depths. Then it is research time.

We'll be finishing the new Hold as well, so that's where the fifth action is coming from.

From a humble priest, he had founded the Order of the Stone Wall at the beginning of the Incursion, after news of the first fallen holds came in numbers never seen. Marching out with Grimnir's Throng in its great march to cleanse the realms and then taking the lessons back with him to the cult where he was given the right to initiate other like-minded priests into a military Order. One whose purpose saw them delve into the darkest places, destroy that which lurked and despoiled your fallen homes and defended not only the clergy but the common Dwarf as well. A precursor to your own Hearth Guard in some respects.

I feel like this part has been overlooked but it looks like the Slayer equivalent in this timeline is more akin to Ironbreakers than anything else.

One potential funny side effect of the chainforger being made public is more master runesmiths should take apprentices. Making normal chain is supposed to suck and be apprentice work so once the novelty wears off the master runesmiths are gonna want someone else to do the work for them :D.

The Order of the Stone Wall are associated with the priesthood of Grugni, not Grimnir. So they're something created independently of Grimnir's final deeds, and also seem to lack any honour related aspects. They seem like Templars to me, the military arm of the church of Grugni.

So the social niche that in canon was occupied by the Slayers is still open, though it would be a welcome change if the Order of the Stone Wall were to take it over and become an alternative to Slayerdom.

Seems that with Grimnir sending his companions back home early with Morgrim, and the latter making it clear that they didn't fuck up, none of the original impetus for the Slayer Cult exists. Let's hope it stays that way.

Well, they did have an easier trip in this quest than in whf canon.

They could rest in Kraka Drakk after all.

In Canon Karag Dum was the Last Bastion. And they had to reach that overland while Kraka Drakk could be reached through the Underway.

I just had a thought, but didn't snorri ssay something about a rune of distance used to reduce space travelled through corridors? Shouldn't that be used for the underway to make even quicker travel? but then again that would help invaders as well wouldn't it? maybe runes of fear to keep the underway clear of break ins from the outside? or try to use rune of repairs instead?

rune of repair + brotherhood to link every section of the underway together to combine all the repair effects as if the whole underway is one item?

The Underway is about the size of a six lane highway. Either the Rune of Distance is already used in the Underway, or it is much to limited to be useful.

- The first tangible bits of evidence for the wave the elders speak of become ever more prevalent. Across the realms Clans undergo the process of partitioning members, gathering resources and divvying up treasuries accordingly as many of their youngsters start to take the first true steps to heading out on their own. It is only hearsay and tavern talk but there is a great deal of talk about filling up the east and establishing holds in parts of the World's Edge. A few more talk of heading down south past the Black Mountains, but compared to the lack of beastmen and vast riches of the eastern lands they are less desirable for obvious reasons. Of the Far North even less is said, despite the riches present many a youngster from the southernmost holds are put off by the tall tales that come from that place. Hmph!
- There are rumours, salacious and almost certainly false, that the Gift Giver has cracked the secret behind that most elusive of materials. Gromril Chainmail, Bah! Tis no more than a bit of beardling tall tale-telling and nothing more, not until there is proof would any sane Dawi believe it! Though the ones in Kraka Drakk swear upon its veracity they of all people can hardly be counted upon. There's respect and then there's this! If. IF. The Gift Giver had done so, more than simple hearsay and supposed examples are required. Undeniable proof, as solid as the stones of Karaz a Karak is what it will take for any sane dwarf to believe. To his credit at least, the Gift Giver is not the source of such fanciful frippery, only those around him. Clearly, he says nothing simply because he believes any fool ought to realize it is a simple falsehood.
- Speaking of that most mysterious Runelord, it is...true. By Grungni's Baldric it is true. Verifiable reports, not only among the Dwarfs of the Far North, but also travelling merchants, Master Runesmiths who came to sell their wares at the town around his workshop and learn at his feet respectively and the Cult of Grungni all agree. The Gift Giver has cracked the code that only Grungni has ever solved, for not only have the King and Prince of Kraka Drakk been seen wearing the material on a trip to Karak Ungor, the Dwarfs in his Retinue, the Hearth Guard, have also been seen wearing shirts of Gromril chainmail as they go about their business and daily duties. The Runelord, for his part, has kept the secret of this wonder only to himself, much to the disappointment of many no doubt. The Cult of Grungni at the very least, is very interested.
Lol, get fucked rumor mill, not talking shit now are you? Anyway hope we get more dwarfs heading towards the North.

One thing that comes to mind when talking of Skaven is their utter greed for Warpstone. And we know that Warpstone can't be safely disposed by elgi, umgi or dawi. Can we not look into some method to get the taint destroyed? I guess the Rune of Purification should provide a starting point, if nothing else?

And are Herdstones also made of Warpstones?

warp stone is already gromril taint removed from the metal, so if placed in our smelter, I think it might produce some more gromril or even adamant, but as a byproduct might make concentrated warp stone, or super warpstone

What does Snorri write back about in his letters to Myrion? Does the exchange involve "equal knowledge"? As in, if we ask about their magic and enchanting, does Snorri write back with explanations of runesmithing?

It's interesting that we're still in the Dwarf Golden Age pre-Elf-Alliance.

The Beastmen really are the major non-daemonic threat to the world at the moment.

Them and HaSHIT wahaha, get stuffed.

Anyway, I don't trust that the beastmen haven't found the newer holds. Seems suspicious to me, that the waves and waves of bodies would be focused on the older holds while "nothing" attacks the newer ones. Harumph.

We should make sure they don't get isolated. Hashit still needs to grab a hold to revive at, and while I doubt it'll ever come as close as it did at Karag Dum I'd prefer if there weren't any isolated areas for it to snuffle around at.

Warpstone is "power stone Dhar" the solid form of the corruption of the eight winds. It's quite explosive and dangerous, with cognito-hazard corruption associated with it getting into ya. Containment is better than leaving it out, but we would likely need to be able to filter it back into the composite eight winds for it to truly be "recycled". I would hazard a guess and say that'll be somewhere far down the Alchemy line, given that we'll probably need to be able to manipulate all eight winds with dhar-resistant tools in order to begin safely having a crack at recycling it.

I believe certain Divine lores can cleanse the taint from things corrupted by warpstone, but I've no knowledge of anything cleansing warpstone itself from canon. Not that my knowledge is comprehensive or anything.

maybe it can be detonated near the Vortex and the Vortex would shunt it out of the world? Dhar is usually described as being thick and heavy like an oil or tar that pools in metaphysical depressions. That means it might not even be whisked out of the world properly like the uncorrupted eight winds, so yeah. I think straining it back into composite winds is probably the most likely path.

this would violate cult secrets and be extremely heretical. It's likely that we exchange knowledge of Dwarven culture in general, or history in general or specific. The elves have still only "recently" met us, and there are a lot of things to speak of without getting into cult secrets

Such as how to properly venerate your badass Ancestors. Like Caledor "Best Elgi" Dragontamer.

Kinda like some distillation analogue, but
for the Winds of Magic. Cool.

But if I remember the narrative correctly, Snorri doesn't know where exactly the taint removed from Gromril in the process of making Adamant goes. So... An avenue we would need to explore before we get into any notion of disposing warpstone, then.

Now I am imagining Snorri sitting in the smelter for years wearing Barak Azamar watching the ingot of gromril turn into purified adamant. :V

I think there may be some reference to Dhar being produced when magic stops flowing and pools, becoming stagnant. Maybe stirring it up again would cause it to break up into the eight winds again.

I wonder if watching an adamant smelter working would be too secret to get a trustworthy magically talented Brana to observe the process.

There is also the politics angle.
That's not nearly as much of a concern that some people seem to think it is.

We already have Word of God confirmation that we could do a lot more before the political angle even becomes relevant.
Kings have the largest retinues on average, because a King has a lot of stuff he can send his retainers to do. Guard important places and people, act as messengers, protect his person during War, and a whole host of other stuff. The thing of having a larger retinue is its basically saying, I have taken on a lot of responsibilities and these guys help me fulfill them + I am important enough to warrant this many people defending me.

It's a political statement at its core just as much as it is a simple change of numbers.

The nuance is what you're gonna be having those guys doing. If they do nothing, it's wasteful, but if you're using them the way you have been Snorri reckons no one is gonna be too upset. It will likely stay that way as long as you don't infringe on the rights of Kings or powerful lords or what have you, and keep the Hearth Guard to being what is essentially Snorri's personal beatstick when in times of war but are otherwise roaming the North doing good deeds and helping the average Dwarf.

Look, if you keep them to the spirit of their founding purpose you can get away with a lot, in the Far North at least. That's a consequence/benefit of your high Standing in the region. Maybe. Snorri thinks that at least.

By his reckoning 300 is fine, as long as they're always out doing something. Going above that is gonna say something, but what that entails is on you to make clear through your actions.
Who knows, you may get other options if their numbers increase higher.
Underline added for emphasis, all other emphasis present in the original post.
Usefulness, Alric realized while he watched the Gift Giver tear down a candidate who was known for their own productivity, seemingly abhorred by the seeming lack of care and quality put into their work.

Snorri Klausson, whether he wished it or not, came out of the question periods with a simple concept attached to him.

The boy did not care how you went about it, only that what you did was on the level of usefulness expected from a Runelord. Something all dwarfs understood and inherently agreed with, but seemingly hadn't taken to the extremes nor tried to quantify it as meticulously as he had.
Snorri is important. He has clout and influence to have his words have weight and his actions are scrutinized.

But as long as those words and actions are consistent with his established belief in utility, even expanding the Hearth Guard to point where it actually becomes a political statement is not a threat at all, but an opportunity.

Expanding the Hearth Guard will let us do more good for our fellow Dwarfs. In my eyes, that's all it comes down to. It's the one thing that truly matters.

Just wanted to throw in, with regards to the Hearth Guard, I think soul is trying to hint that we could/should maybe have them Dreng Them vs the Beastmen(can we target that way?). Y'know since they're waxing and massing to attack Holds etc etc.

I mean....we have that rune of purification from the smelter....what happens when we try to purify warpstone with it?
I think that is how you make a bomb that puts nukes to shame: total matter to energy conversion

So you either make a smelter that can withstand bullshit levels of energy (i.e. Laihtero/Glimril smelter) , or you use tiny amounts of warpstone.

Edit: Or, I guess you could run it at a lower intensity, with the warpstone slowly disintegrating into heat.
Having mass to energy reactor could be incredibly useful
off the top of my head:
-reducing the fuel consumption by the hold's smelter
-hot water for the whole hold
