Residue processing pt. 13
"Well then," you whisper to yourself. You've just about had it with her, and... truth be told, some part of you would dearly like to let her die, or Witchout, if that's what's happening. It'd... solve a lot of problems, and you can come back and quietly clean up later.

But no.

You don't do things like that.

And besides... Someone, somewhere, is fighting for you, and all that. Maybe she doesn't know it, but... you're on her side. You want her to live.

You become aware of Mami gently stroking your hand, teasing your tightly clenched fist open and holding your hand between both of hers. You squeeze her hand lightly, giving her a smile.

"Mami, Homura?" you say. You don't have to raise your voice too much, with your carpet cruising in a slow circle. "She won't accept my help, or my apology... but I can't just leave her alone." You press your lips together. "Much as I'd like to. But we can't. It'd literally kill her."

Homura shakes her head, expression flat. There's a hint of apology in her posture, her shoulders slightly hunched.

Mami clasps your hand between both of hers. "I think..." she swallows, looking up at you. "I think she's just, just lashing out. She was angry that we didn't make it to our appointment, and just... lashing out. We have to be firm with her. Just show up. I-I don't think she will like it, but it may be the only way."

"Do you think so?" you sigh, rubbing at your forehead. You really don't know whether this is for the better. It's in line with what you've been thinking, and it's nice to have confirmation, but... you're not entirely sure you trust your own judgement.

She nods tentatively. She doesn't look very sure herself, more torn than anything.

"OK, then," you say, eyeing Homura. The girl's expression is set, her violet eyes staring out into the darkened horizon. The thick clouds shrouding the sky have finally started moving, scudding across the sky in sluggish spurts. The moon, waxing towards its first quarter, occasionally peeks out from above.

"I was thinking of using Homura's power to head in quickly, find her, and see what her situation's like?" you say.

"I don't think she's really busy," Mami offers, grimacing.

"Neither do I," you murmur. "But she might be in distress." You tap your own Soul Gem meaningfully.

"I don't have any objections," Homura notes quietly, resting her fingers lightly on the rim of her shield.

Mami nods, spreading her fingers to show golden ribbons starting to web between them.

You take a deep breath, and exhale slowly. "Alright. Let's do it, then," you say.

Homura twists her shield with a hum of clockwork, gears singing. Grey hues explode across the night, swallowing up the bright glows of traffic suddenly paralyzed in the streets below. You feel motion at your waist - Mami's ribbon, twisting sinuously around to bind you to Mami and Homura.

You smile at your friends. "Thanks for indulging me," you whisper.

"Of course, Sabrina," Mami says, giving you an answering smile.

Homura just gives you a nod.

You sigh. "Somewhere in that direction, right?" you confirm, gesturing in the general direction of Yokosuka Academy and glancing at Homura.

She nods again, this time in affirmation, and you will the carpet forward, zooming towards the school. It only takes a few minutes' flight before you arrive at the enormous glass edifice that you're increasingly sure was built purely for the express purpose of one-upping Mitakihara. It even has those crennelations topping it, except wrought of gleaming steel and glass into swooping spires and arches.

"Somewhere in that direction," Homura murmurs, pointing to the west. You nod, and redirect the carpet.

"By the way, Mami," you ask. "Does Yokosuka have a rivalry with Mitakihara Middle School or something?"

"Yes, we do," Mami confirms with a shrug. "I never really bothered much with it, though..."

"Ah. That would explain it," you say.

Mami glances back at the building. "... it is a bit ostentatious," she agrees.

"Ostentatious," you snort. The grin fades back into seriousness, though, and you look at Homura again. "Any idea where better?"

She shakes her head. "Somewhere here," she says.

"Hmm..." you say, reaching out with your senses. You can feel the crackling glows that are your friends, sitting beside you. Beside you, and beneath you, are the tenuous, sepulchral presence of Grief ghosting through the air. A faint shadow of Grief, somewhere below, but... no. No other magical girls, and no Witch.

"Hm. Nothing that I can sense," you say with a frown. The carpet dips lower towards the ground, swooping between the canyons formed by the buildings, and you speed along the streets.

You spend fifteen minutes zigzagging along the streets before... "There," you murmur. "Found her, I think. Or I've found a magical girl."

A slightly poorer area, you think. A little shabby, and the facade perhaps a little more dirty than you usually see. Glowing on the ninth floor, in your sight beyond sight... A presence. Grief and magic, the distinctive twinned signature of a magical girl.

You head in.

Your impressions are confirmed as you head in. Not the best maintained place, indeed. Nothing bad. Just a bare shade less opulent than might be expected, or perhaps if you compared it to Oriko or Madoka's places. Or even Mami's apartment block.

Without prompting, Homura unlocks the door with a flash of purple light and steps into the apartment.

You're confronted with a frozen tableau. An older woman, bearing more than a passing similiarity to Megane, is slumped on the sofa, a can of what's obviously beer in her hand. A few empty cans lie abandoned on the ground, and the television's on.

Beyond that, a door that's rather pointedly closed, and presumably, locked. You can feel Megane just beyond that, and a little help from Homura sees you through.

You find Megane sitting on her bed, legs drawn up to her chest. Crumpled in her hand are some papers, ones you can't make out. Her Soul Gem, gleaming on her finger, is perhaps a quarter full... and you can't sense that Grief Seed you'd given her anywhere.

No Grief Seed... Used up and gone with Kyubey, rather than ask for help after we put off our meeting.

She's holding them, though. We could check if there's more on the floor or a trash bin.
We should try to read those papers as much as we can from timestop, without disturbing her, before we do much else. They are probably important, and she will also probably not be inclined to let us see them after she suddenly finds us there with her.

As for how: it's called looking over someone's shoulder. Just try to read as much of it as you can without touching her.

I'm actually very concerned about Ono's powers. Namely, that they're apparently always on and passive in effect, combined with the fact that they drastically affect her behavior. It's hard to tell how deep the effect goes, but it could effectively be a power that supersedes her own personality/behavior 24/7, and she'd have no real way out of it.

If her powers compel her (and allow her) to keep up a perfect facade 24/7, and said powers are always active, then is she even capable of expressing her distress or asking for help?

TL;DR - Are her powers controlling her, rather than the other way around?

[] Try to read those papers as much as you can without bringing Ono into timestop. Look over her shoulder if need be, but also check to see if there are any other such papers lying around the room.
-[] Be sure to check her facial expression, as well, since we probably won't see any genuine expressions from her after she finds out Sabrina and Co. are present.

So... a dilemma: To do, or not to do? Anything we do right now, Ono will know, so if we do anything, it must be something that is worth doing, even then.

After checking if there's more of those papers to read, and other stuff, like Ono's choice of literature, if any, and what's the decoration like... we might drop her a Grief Seed? With a note? If we do, she'll know we've seen her, her shame, what's likely a big part of what drove her to contract, that makes her feel inferior. So, would it be better to talk to her? Or maybe, if we drop a Seed and leave, we can all play pretend that tonight's visit didn't happen?...

It's not only what we saw, there's what we didn't see, too. Only her mother in her house, it seems. The father?

Haaah... Residue Processing...

Likely that she needed to use it, didn't want to call us, used it and gave it to Kyubey. She probably intends to hunt a Witch tonight, so she has a Grief Seed on herself tomorrow when we meet. She either doesn't know there's differences between Grief Seeds, or intends to divert our attention from it.

And this also explains the 'Why should I?' when we asked if she wanted to go hunting. It wasn't just denying us, she didn't want us to see she didn't have the Grief Seed we entrusted her.

Yes, that's a possibility, though not the only bad one in a extreme way. Even if her powers don't control her, she herself might be/get 'addicted' to them.

If her powers are active all the time, that could be helped with some sort of anti-magic effect. If the passive usage comes from her mind, that might not be an option.

Situation not entirely surprising. The papers she's holding are probably test papers from school, if I were to guess. Probably poor grades.

Given the very high bar set in the school systems (as seen from Mami's studying), and the competition between Shirome and Mitakihara, is it possible that Shirome might want to... let students go, who are underperforming (bringing the overall school average down)? Combine that with a poor family situation...

A more speculative view would be that her powers might be linked to her performance at school (either in general, or to meet the new bar based on her recent jump due to the wish). In order to counter the grief buildup in her soul gem, she tried turning the powers off for a while. Performance was unacceptable. Also needs her persona in order to survive the social pressure. Thus she is forced to maintain her magical effect just to keep up; but that, of course, is going to kill her. A no-win situation.

Sabrina gave her a bit of hope, and then pulled it away with her constant delays. If she burned through an entire seed plus another 25% of her gem in such a short time, and Sabrina's "life or death" warnings are valid, and she knows that there is no point in relying on Sabrina to keep her word in a timely manner, then it's unsurprising that she's pushing Sabrina away. She knows that her time is limited, at best. Maybe she can at least leave a little guilt on the porch for those who left her to die.

Anyway, that's my read on it. Looks like it was definitely the better choice to deal with this now.

Actually have several options open on how to proceed, but for now I'm just going to let it sit; give it some more thought.

Also agree that this is also very likely (complementary to my own speculation). Extra guilt on top of resentment.

"Very well," Megane acquieces, holding her hand out in an imperious gesture for the Grief Seed. You place the spiked ball in her hand, and slim fingers close over it. The girl holds the Grief Seed for a moment, as if weighing it. Finally, she brings her arm behind her back, and when her hand drops to hang loosely at her side, the Grief Seed's vanished.

Not like she has pockets in an evening gown, you suppose.
When she stored the Grief Seed, were we still able to sense it?

Oh. I was thinking she didn't know why hunting Witches is important. We did tell her that, right?
Even if Sabrina didn't, she likely knows. She was watching the barrier Sabrina entered when we first found her, and seriously distraught over having the witch she found stolen from her. And is presumably in contact with Kyuubey (assuming the missing grief seed isn't in hammerspace).

From what we've seen of her, I can't imagine her not knowing.

So, I've got a baaaaad idea.

If Ono's powers are active constantly, and she can't turn them off most of the time... She could really use an Emptied Seed.

[jk] Hug Ono until her magic deactivates.
She looks like she needs a hug and some encouraging words.

I think the most likely case is that she used up the grief seed we gave her and Kyubey came by to collect it.
So right now we can leave, since she isn't in any immediate danger and maybe leave her another grief seed for emergencies or we try to talk it out with her and explain everything face to face.

A semi-serious suggestion for diabling Ono's magic if she can't do it herself: let Kirika blast her with anti-magic and hope that it doesn't turn on by itself again.

Just an aside, the Shirome/Mitakihara rivalry is pretty irrelevant for Ono since she goes to
"Yokosuka Middle School," the girl[Ono] answers. "I'm in the third year."

Also, we know her super composure powers can be turned off. But it is possible that she can only do so when she believes she's alone. And, uh, popping in via timestop/teleport is likely to make her less confident that she actually is alone. The Koobeycoms are likely to cause the same problem.

I'd hope that her power just activates whenever she feels she needs to put up a front, but getting her to a point where she no longer feels that need... well, that's likely to be a trick.

Maybe throw Kyoko at her since she just plain won't put up with a false front. Not, mind you, that I have any ideas on how to make that happen. Aside from Yuma, I guess. But that's still not an actual plan.

Ah. I was mixing up which school was which, then. I'd thought there was mention of competition between Mitakihara and Ono's school, and since we were passing the school near where she lived....

"Ah, we're from Mitakihara Middle School, mostly," Mami says, smiling.
...
A definite flash of something across Megane's face, but you're not sure what. "Ah," she says. "I think that we're supposed to be rivals, then."

Mami shakes her head. "I've never set much stock by the school rivalries."
You sigh. "Somewhere in that direction, right?" you confirm, gesturing in the general direction of Shirome Academy and glancing at Homura.

So actually, the rivalry might still matter, it's just that we started near Shirome (the one named in the update), then traveled for a few minutes to reach Yokosuka (Ono's school), before turning from there to roughly where Homura thought Ono's home was.

Or... meh. I don't remember what Shirome looked like.

@Firnagzen : Is the ostentatious school we see Shirome or Yokosuka?

Actually... yeah, that could be a semi-permanent solution to her screwed-up power. Just need to tell her to keep out of PvP and witch fights, report any of the former to us, keep her gem clean and let it never go up to half-full.

After that, she'll only need to contact us for reports on hostile activity, and cleansing her superseed after, oh, maybe a decade?

Let's hope those papers are school stuff and not something more sinister like, say, I'm leaving notes, or suicide notes.

Problems with this plan, I think:

- I don't think we've told Mami about Clear Seeds, due to their similarities with Soul Gems.

- Ono might misuse her magic against other people, if she thinks there'll be no repercussions.

- Explain to Homura why we're trusting the fragile unknown newbie so much. Mind we're already trusting Oriko with one of these, but still...
