I can see "Oriko's father fucking hated her" as justifying it.
Oriko thought her father was her only ally
and suffered through all of this in the name of that belief
and Kirika learned that her father never believed in her.
that everything Oriko suffered for was a lie.
Yvonne-Today at 9:46 PM
Well, their conversation is six more pages. I should be able to get through that with a day of work.
Or so.
Kaizuki-Today at 10:06 PM
美国修一郎 きみの祖父だ きみは会ったことはないだろうが Shuichiro Mikuni Your grandfather I don't think you ever met him, but 彼は 政治手腕もだが その人柄で 人気があってね He had political skill as well With that personality, he is/was popular with the people, and appeared elegant/good/nice, so he was beloved ただ But 彼の返く... 特にこども逹は 彼がそれだはの 人間ではないことを 知っていた Especially when he returned (when he retired??? He might well have been a diet member before a time when it would have been convenient for him to return home routinely?) the children knew that he wasn't human. Okay this next bit really requires someone who is in the know. 者 is one of many kanji for "person." 邪魔者 is, in this context, literally referring to someone who is in the way. 陥れ I have no idea about -- best Jisho is giving me is fall... eh, hold on. Can't believe I'm doing this but let's break out the paperback dictionary... Fall, entrap, ensnare, sink, capture, surrender... Probably entrap or capture here? 邪魔者を陥れ (I) entrapped (someone who was) an obstacle (in my way). 無能 Noun, "incompetent person." 切り捨てる Transitive verb, "to cut down; to slay." Literally, "I entrapped someone who was in my way. (I) Kill incompetent people."
Everything after that is almost fill-in-the-blanks with that context.
I have no idea whether the grandfather was corrupt or not
but either way, he was murderously competent.
And I rather don't think, based on the stuff about Kimihide "rebelling against it" and Hisaomi being afraid of him, that he was anything less than an absolutely uncompromising disciplinarian.
He wouldn't have allowed his children to be incompetent...
That's the sort of attitude that is being conveyed here.
And anyone who crossed him -- they'd be killed.
I can definitely see Hisaomi killing himself if his daughter was turning out the same way...
Yvonne-Today at 10:13 PM
Yeah, and Oriko definitely echoes him near the end.
Kaizuki-Today at 10:13 PM
Damn straight.
Yvonne-Today at 10:13 PM
... Hold on, I think I need to hunt for some typos. Found one already.
Or rather, feel free to continue, but I will be hunting for them.
What I found was pretty near the end.
But I'm going to go through and make sure the symbol count in stuff matches up to the manga.
...or not. It looks like my ride just arrived.
Bah, will be back to proofread in a couple hours.
And thanks for your help Kai.

Oriko, angry: 殺す! 貴方を殺す! "I'll kill you! I'll kill you!" 父の無念を たらす Can't make heads or tails of that. I'd guess at there being some aphorism for suicide in there, and Oriko... Uhm. わたしは... わたしの父の理想を "I... My father's ideals...!" 自分の理想の為に For the same of my ideals -- or "because of my ideals" -- I think it's the former 他者を切り捨て 消すことを 厭わない人間だ (I) am not a person who detests slaying and erasing others.(edited)

政をよったら 面白 かろうと 政 -- government よったら -- hypothetical quantifier form attached to either よう, よつ, or よる -- it would be rather helpful if it was written as a fucking kanji but it's not. My inclination is to agree with translate and treat it as よる with the definition "to choose, to select" because that's the only way it makes sense, I think. 面白 かろうと -- everything after 面白 か is over my head. But 面白 か is 面白, "interesting", with a question designator attached. So I'm guessing google is pretty right and this is Kenzaburo asking Oriko whether she thinks choosing politics would be interesting.
sighs
scuse me(edited)

The fallout of this is as follows: that fucking diary? Basically describes how Oriko drove her father to suicide by coming off as too much like his Illuminati-boss diet member Father who may or may not have been corrupt but is totally confirmed to have been the kind of guy to casually murder people for being incompetent and/or in his way, and all his kids were scared shitless of him and thought he wasn't human.
Yurako's death (by hisaomi or the grandfather, unclear, personal theory is grandpa ordered it and Hisaomi was too scared to say no) ended up turning Oriko into Grandfather 2.0 and Hisaomi couldn't deal at all. So he hung himself. And then Oriko promptly proved him right by going around being completely okay with -- well, she literally says, "I am not a person who detests slaying and erasing others." And we promptly get images of all the people she has puppeteered into being murdered, etc.

So... That thing is just bad. Let's toss it in a grief bubble and forget about the damn thing until Sadness Prayer concludes and we know for certain whether to burn it.

(*) Meanwhile, Kirika thinks Hisaomi is Oriko's enemy because his response to Oriko trying to grow up quickly to help him while idolizing him was to be scared shitless of her and fucking kill himself, which promptly led to her actually becoming the person he was scared that she was.

All he had to do was love her. Instead he caused her fall into, well, her grandfather / his father.

Catgirl's note: I am far from fluent in Japanese. We won't have a concrete basis until the official translation comes out. However, everything before the (*) is very high confidence, like, 99.5%. The stuff about why specifically Kirika hates Hisaomi is admittedly conjecture, but it's probably the case?

Da, Sabrina-tovarishch.

I wanted to place a question in the minds of those who wish to not read the diary.
It was out on the desk for an extended period.
How would that happen? If his last act was to write, and leave that out, it would no longer be on the desk. Investigators would have read it, and likely returned it to a shelf or drawer.
IMHO, Oriko is the one who left it on the desk.
She already knows what is inside, at least a fragment of same. Thus, at some point the knowledge of his last words to her may become useful when it becomes time to help her.

Basically describes how Oriko drove her father to suicide by coming off as too much like his Illuminati-Mafia-Grandfather who may or may not have been corrupt but is totally confirmed to have been the kind of guy to casually murder people for being incompetent and/or in his way, and all his kids were scared shitless of him and thought he wasn't human. Oriko choosing to grow up when Kimihide was killed by Oriko's grandfather for "rebelling" against the grandfather's dictates ended up turning Oriko into Grandfather 2.0 and Hisaomi couldn't deal at all.

Sooooo

The working version for now is that Hisaomi was triggered by Oriko acting too much like his father?

Japaaan.

I swear, there is nothing simple in Japan. I'd bet if Creed was Japanese, he'd become an outright Tzeentch cultist.

Oriko thought her father was her only ally

and Kirika learned that her father never believed in her.
that everything Oriko suffered for was a lie.

Annnnnnd. that's that conversation.
Gonna call it here for today.
If @Kaizuki or someone wants to give a proper translation, now it's complete.
I may take a look at Oriko and Kirika's conversation after this, which goes to the end of the chapter.

Or rather, feel free to continue, but I will be hunting for them.

Holy shit, all the kudos for getting this down. Well that gives us some things, wow there. Yeah, doubling down on my opinion to cloud store the diary until we verify whether it needs to go burn. Well, the willingness to burn it is new, but intel or no intel, unless we very much need it, that thing is a danger even existing, and what we know of the contents is stuff that nobody needs to hear. It could still have things we need to know, futurewise, but we sure as heck shouldn't deal with that until or unless we need to deal with it. While @HeroCycle is right to be concerned about why the heck that thing was sitting out on the table (though it is possible that Oriko read it while still in shock from her father's death, and then just threw it the hell out of her memories into her brain's lockdown to protect herself from all the shit going on at the time), either Oriko found it and presently doesn't know the contents possibly due to repressing the fuck of them, Oriko found it and does know some of the contents and isn't detectably and immediately imploding from them in specific, or Oriko didn't find it and it was on the table for some other reason (either legit reason or something-spoopy-conspiracy reason); in any case, if we ever do need to read it, it's certainly not right now; we can table it safely, I think, into storage.

But anyway, no, yeah, holy shit. All my applause for getting that thing done.

...huh. So, off topic, but Sabrina mentioned earlier that she suspects each Meguca has her own "4th Dimension," and that it might be the basis for Witch Barriers.

If that IS the case...then what the hell was that "Barrier" we made before?

Personally, I'm against destroying the diary before we have the full truth.

We now know more of how Oriko reacts to the diary and what the fundamental problem is, but we don't yet know all of it. Relevantly, afterwards she both confides with Kirika, goes from the super serious Oriko we saw earlier to someone who plays video games with her (girl?) friend, and ends up having a conversation wherein she appears to make peace with her Uncle Kimihide.

How much of that is a result of reading the diary is unknown, and a lot of that change in character appears to be happening anyways, but we don't know, and our prior assumptions --- that it contained an Infohazard about her father killing her mother --- appear to be quite badly wrong at this juncture.

Taking further action before the end result is truly known may not be in our, or her, best interests.

We could read and contain it. I'm jumping to the conclusion that it is a trigger item of some sort, and aside from the positive effect of truth for us it has no other good use. It may be a liability.

I'll stand down a notch, please keep in the back of our minds not to let it become a dangerous liability in the near future. It would be a shame to invest so heavily in the better version of Oriko, only to watch her backslide.

Why destroy the diary after reading it?

Kirika might be an extremist, but I'm still not saying she's wrong. Let's be careful to not undo her intent, this book has become a trust issue between her and Sabrina. We might not burn it today, but we must make it seriously inaccessible. Aside from "cloud storage," which has a few failure modes, what other reasonable security is appropriate? Good old burial, perhaps? 99.9 meters of earth is sinfully easy for us to lift.

Oriko certainly shouldn't read the diary now, but that doesn't mean that will always be the case. There may come a day when learning the real reason her father killed himself will help her come to terms with it (or maybe not, but keeping the option is cheap).

What failure modes are you expecting from storing it in our pocket dimension? As for trust issues, I don't think we should take
"I don't want it," Kirika hisses, voice suddenly darkening again. "Shred it, burn it, whatever. Get rid of it."
as a carefully-considered request and not an emotional display.

Did you ever think what might happen if Sabrina lost a fight against a 'specifically crafted' Magical Girl opponent? My wallet is secure - until I lose the ability to prevent someone else from un-securing it.

Thus, considering the idea of "how would I keep this a secret in the best way possible?" It isn't reference material, so hiding it and not coming back is a possible approach? Regret is harder than preparation?

I think the only reason Kirika didn't destroy it was fear of damaging her relationship under some odd condition. Otherwise, it would have been shredded in that scene. We are the useful third party.

Barriers are a "3D" experience. If this is a faithfully rendered faux 4D space, how many 3D spaces can I experience inside it?

I was only half joking before. The civilian clothes should alternate with the Magical Girl outfit in 4D space somewhere, do you think?

I say dump the diary in a grief comtainer, regardless of if you read it or not. That way it is secure but available in the unforeseen eventuality it is useful.

Apropos of nothing, I also think ya'll should look into that Magical Girl anime Sayaka mentioned way back. Kinda curious to see what the Bizzarro!PMMM looks like. Might also be worth looking into other works that were done by Urobuchi, to see if they are different in the PMMMverse as well.

This applies to every possible storage method! Magic can do anything, after all. But in general, it's going to be much harder to take things from us that require directly contesting our magic, rather then just 100 meters of dirt or a bank vault, and people who can pierce our magic are going to go for their combat objectives, not the book we store in hammerspace that they don't even know exists.

I'm not sure about that. We don't seem to be summoning our hammers from hammerspace, ironically enough, so it's clearly possible for things to be conjured out of nothing. I think it's likely that civilian clothes get stored in hammerspace, whereas the magical girl outfit is conjured anew each time.

So, from what I'm hearing , the entire Mikuni family (minus Oriko, and she's technically a Kure) deserves to die in a fire.

Wait, I just had a thought. Is there any chance of the Mikuni Clan discovering Oriko's meguca-ness, and then blackmailing or otherwise coercing her into becoming a threat again? (Yeah, I know, they'll be immediately gutted by Kirika, followed up by us interrogating the survivors and looting the dead, but whatever. Just popped into my brain.)

Yeah, and Oriko definitely echoes him near the end.
Kaizuki-Today at 10:13 PM
Damn straight.

> Oriko concluding that she's totally her grandfather

政をよったら 面白 かろうと 政 -- government よったら -- hypothetical quantifier form attached to either よう, よつ, or よる -- it would be rather helpful if it was written as a fucking kanji but it's not. My inclination is to agree with translate and treat it as よる with the definition "to choose, to select" because that's the only way it makes sense, I think. 面白 かろうと -- everything after 面白 か is over my head. But 面白 か is 面白, "interesting", with a question designator attached. So I'm guessing google is pretty right and this is Kenzaburo asking Oriko whether she thinks choosing politics would be interesting.

scuse me(edited)

Thank you very much for the translation! I'll index this under useful information.

Now, could I get some more votes?

So, from what I'm hearing , the entire Mikuni family (minus Oriko, and she's technically a Kure) deserves to die in a fire.

Wait, I just had a thought. Is there any chance of the Mikuni Clan discovering Oriko's meguca-ness, and then blackmailing or otherwise coercing her into becoming a threat again? (Yeah, I know, they'll be immediately gutted by Kirika, followed up by us interrogating the survivors and looting the dead, but whatever. Just popped into my brain.)
Even without Kuybey mindwipe, how exactly is that a compromising information? "We're gonna tell the world you're magical girl"? Doesn't really sound like something good for their political careers.
