Man, Homura should really learn to voice her thoughts instead of just staring at people.
We need a magical girl, whose power is to understand Homura's stoic silence.

Mami's idea is certainly interesting, but I don't understand how that would work. If making a barrier makes witches more active, why did Sayaka in particular get witch kissed and only her and not some random schmuck in the industrial district?
There would still need to be an ouside influence that is "punishing" us for using barriers, by diretcing the witches against us.
And why did it only happen the second time we made a barrier, but not the first time?
While Mami's idea has merit, there are still a lot of pieces missing.

Two missing bits:
You force yourself to straighten and meet Homura's eyes, clear blue against faded, tired lilac. Splashes of colour in a drained world. "I don't think it's my powers or I, Homura. It... Remember I mentioned at lunch, that I made a Barrier? I made the same Barrier, and in the same way, earlier this morning, and I didn't encounter anything unexpected."
You continue. "But... Homura, Mami, I... In any case, no more Barriers. Not until I find out what all these feathers are about."

The primary problem with Mami's idea is that there's no way to test it without making a Barrier, and we swore off doing that. If we were able to create Barriers, then we could test Mami's proposition by creating one of our Barriers near a witch's barrier and checking for any synchronization effects. But in order to do that, we would have to amend our promise to allow for careful testing of Barriers (i.e. with supervision from Mami and Homura).

Mami's idea is incomplete but pointing in what looks like the right direction. Us making a barrier could make it easier for Homucifer or Madoka-Who-Made-Us's witch or whatever Feathers is to get into or influence this timeline.
The problem with this promise is that it says that we won't make any Barriers until we can prove that they have nothing to do with "Feathers". Which is something that will be extremely difficult to do without experimenting with the Barriers. It's a Catch-22 that effectively means swearing off all Barrier research until we conclusively determine (from other sources) that the Barrier doesn't have anything to do with "Feathers". Which probably means that we can't make any Barriers until after we defeat "Feathers".

I really wish we hadn't made this promise.

As funny as that comic is, I have one issue with it being used as a "message".

More realistically, a scientist would want to pull it again to figure out how it works, but realizing it was dangerous, would take precautions. Rig up a device to pull the lever remotely, making sure you are in a well insulated environment, make sure you are at a distance, etc. before trying to pull the level again.

It is not a binary "repeat the exact same thing" or "don't do it at all ever again" choice.

Threadmark is missing an 'e'.

Intense update, by the way.

... On that note,

[X] Cleanse.

It dawned on me at some point...
The seer swipes tiredly at her face. "Can you explain how your powers work?" she asks. "There are... layers to the future. Things change, in the most fundamental way, when you act. I tried to corral your actions."
Did Feathers just fucking scratch off Barriers from our tech tree?

If that's what it wants (aside from making everybody paranoid and scared and make our friends doubt us), it's succeding.

Also, will all our enemies be schemers? Because this is just like Oriko, except this time we don't have the choice to throw caution to the winds and punch her in the face. I mean, punch Feathers in the face. We could punch Oriko in the face, I guess, but I doubt that'd help.

EDIT: Also by the way, I think Mami's grasping at straws. Do we mention we had already asked Oriko about this particular Witch in the past?

Maybe it has, but I do want us to have a place to store large amounts of grief, and a barrier is one such example of said place.

[jk] Bop Homura ontop of the head, she's too quiet and has most likely glitched out again.
Poor Homura.

If Sabrina's telling the truth, there might actually something bigger than Walpurgisnacht out there. This one time it looked like everything was gonna go just fine, a turn of luck lands her her best chance at ending the loops, the stakes are suddenly raised. Because fuck getting a happy ending, right?

If Sabrina's lying... Was it all for nothing, then? One time she tries to trust somebody, to maybe even rely on somebody else, and this is what happens? A knife in the back? Hell, Sabrina doesn't even need to be lying about her intentions, maybe her powers are just as evil as they feel like, and she's gonna destroy any chances this loops goes right without even meaning to.

...

Putting this to words, I doubt Homura will want the second option to be the true one. I think, if we shake off the bad feelings, firmly re-state our belief that there is something bigger out there, and reassure her that whatever it is, we can tackle it together, we can make it through this one.

Not really, a Barrier would ping all the Witch radars, so we'd be a beacon for hostile megucas, and we would be putting our friends on edge with our mere presence. If we're gonna do that, we can simply will our grief to become super small, then we can carry however much we want in a single marble.

Well, shit. You know, it seemed like Oriko was honestly afraid, but dropping the feathers on us and making it seem like we're the cause seems like an excellent plan to keep us from being too closely allied with Homura.

I have no idea what to say here. Homura seems ready to drop us from timestop and break communications.

We're wavering. We're acting as if we're considering the option we might actually be the enemy. We need to stop that.

[X] "You know what?" *Silently ask for Mami to hand you the feather* "I believe we have an enemy stronger than Walpurgisnacht incoming, and it's messing with us."
[X] Put Feather away. "This thing freaks me out. It really does"
[X] Cleanse own Soul Gem. "Whatever is coming. We can take it. Together." Smile.
[X] Offer cleansing.

[] If they seem amenable, mention a certain headache of a seer had predicted this exact same Witch to arrive in Mitakihara tomorrow. We need to prepare for an enemy that can change things in large scale, with abilities such as directing Witches to target certain people, blocking foresight, and magnificient trolling.

Well, we'd act like a normal, sensible, person, but we know that it doesn't shoot every time, and that it's also a pocket dimension machine on top of that. What scientist would we be if a mere discouraging shock (heh, get it? The feather was a shock to us) stopped our research into something so fun useful?

[x] I suppose it's possible. If you're right, that's ... more than a little concerning. And it will be difficult to prove it without making the barrier and risking whatever it was that happened all over again.
[x] In case you're right, the best solution is to just not make any more barriers. No barrier. No lightning rod. No feathers. No witches where they shouldn't be.
[x] Until we know more, that's the best way to protect our friends. I'm not going to let something like this be my fault... I'm going to keep my friends safe no matter what.
[x] And if it's something else, I'll find out and stop it.
[x] Cleanse self and offer cleansing to Homura and Mami
[x] What do you think Homura?

[x] It's feasible. But it's not something I can really test.
Nitpick; plausible.
And we could probably try to figure out a way to test it (or at least narrow down the other possibilities a bit), but we don't want to, 'cos that'd mean poking the crazy and exposing people - particularly our friends - to unknown levels of risk from unknown directions.

... I'm wondering if we shouldn't ask whether they'd be happier if we took steps to get Oriko and Kirika out of the city some time soon.
Reasoning, threefold.
One - if they're elsewhere (particularly with people we can more or less rely on, if we can swing that), it reduces their ability to easily affect the situation on the ground. Simple as. Happier Homu.
Two - there is a threat to them, which we might be unable to meet. Targeted assassination by witch implies deeply scary things. Quietly getting them behind a group or two with different powersets to us, outside the city of crazy and (sweet mother of gods I hope) beyond the range of any more experimental mishaps or dimensional excursions might preserve our assets.
Three - engendering personal loyalty (as opposed to an alliance of convenience) in people who think they've got a lifespan measured in days pretty much has to mean giving them hope. Doing something unforeseen to improve their odds could go a long way.

What's worse is that to us, and by extension Sabrina, it looks like the one trying to fuck over Homura's happy ending is full crazy future/alternate universe Homura.

It's (remotely) possible that Oriko is just a fantastic actor and that "Feathers" is all a ploy to give her room to resume her fight against us, but I honestly doubt it.

Much like my expectations for this quest ending well.

--[x] In that case, why not just kill me? She went about an overly convoluted plot to help us fight this thing and a simple solution was right in front of her.
To be fair, that is just like Oriko.

Also, tossing this piece out of here:

[x] "Maybe. But I'm not the only one who makes Barriers."
[x] Straighten up and look them in the eye. "It is simple. We kill all the witches."

@BeaconHill: You seem to labour under the misapprehension that this thread cares about saving people.

And well....it kinda does, in the way of extra points on survival run in a game. Outside of the few megucas Sabrina works with, that's really the appropriate model. Thus, your
With a power like this, we can save people. Many people. The onus is not on me to absolutely disprove your shadowrun; as you said, no one can. It's on you to prove that your shadowrun is so plausible that we need to stop trying to save people in order to placate it.

With a technique like this, we can get lot of points. Of course an apple could possibly fall up, but it's on you to show apples falling up is so plausible that we shouldn't get those points in order to hold it off.

(Also, the stakes - given how feathers is possible the end of the world, some apprehension is required even if comes no matter what anyway.)

I noticed no-one brought this up, but this invisi-text from the update before the current update is a reference to Rebellion.

It's one of the runic messages that appear during the movie, and in the original movie release it was the last image before the credits. (The BD/DVD release changes the runes to read "Who had dreamt?"
I didn't know that.

So that's from the part of the movie where Homura's questioning/realizing who had made the fake Mitakihara.
