I must admit, should this nicknaming business catch on I reckon that the reaction to Homu-homu's nickname would be epic.
"So, we've got Witch Girl, Deadshot with the drills, Wolverine and ... I don't think I've seen her before." *Grins*
"Sakura, it is my absolute pleasure to introduce to you my dear friend, my comrade, and the only person I know of that could take me down in a instant - miss Akemi Homura.
"A.K.A: Murderface." <Dothehairflip! Dothehairflip! Dothe-> *Hair-flip*
*Wild Casey has fled!!*
"HAHAHAHA!! YESSS!" "Sabrina, was that really necessary?"
"She started it. I told her I'd get her back for the nickname." "... Really? Murderface?"
"Sorry, that was a bit rude; I'll make it up to you." "That won't be necessary."
"Would you prefer 'Homu-Homu'?" "Oooh, I like that one!" "... why don't you keep thinking about it..."
You take a deeper breath, and straighten. You're not going to chicken out, not when there's perhaps a chance here to save the girl here, however slim.
Maybe you need to give it a container. Soul Gem, Grief Seed... this thing should be inside, you reason, remember the selcuphral voice whispering Dedolere with a shudder. It's like someone walking over your grave...
You're delaying.
You know what you want to do, but you have no idea how to do it. Something like what the Incubators did to Homura, another time and another place... an isolation field. A seal which you can slap onto Hildegard... you discard your warhammer, letting it fade away as it leaves your hand, breaking down into its constituent magic.
And there's the key, perhaps. You reach out with one hand, drawing a circle in the air with a finger, and you... let magic follow the motion, forming a loop in the air.
It dissipates, much like the hammer did.
You cock your head, looking thoughtfully at the spot where the circle hung. That didn't work. Maybe if you started with your native powers? A cloud of Grief billows forth from your wings, hanging obediently in the air in front of you. A twist of your will shapes it into a thin, spherical shell, but still one of Grief. You frown at the shell. It's Grief instead of magic, however nebulous a concept that is, and you can change its properties...
Then again, a Grief Seed is formed of Grief too, you think, and you have no idea how to achieve what the Incubators did. Maybe if you had more time to experiment in peace.
You look down at the remains of Hildegard, absently siphoning the small amount of Grief it's generated in the meantime while you were expecting. At your behest, your sphere of Grief splits in half at the equator, and swoops to scoop up the stringy mass of the Witch. Your right thumb twitches, instinctively feeling like you should be mashing a button to ensure the proper containment of the Witch.
... well, it's not like it's actually struggling. You have some stringy stuff that is the Witch Hildegard contained in a sphere of Grief.
Nothing's happening. Maybe if you tried to feed it some magic? You spin out a bit of magic, very carefully poking it at the Witch. To your other senses, the Witch goes berserk, tiny spikes of Grief bubbling off the squirming bundle.
You flinch. No. Not again.
Your hands clench into a fist, and the sphere implodes, smashing the physical form of Hildegard into a pulp.
And-
With your sense focused as they are, you can feel Hildegard go quiescent, and a protective shall - the Grief Seed forming around it. The Barrier wavers, dissolving with the defeat of its Witch into its constituent Grief, rushing inwards in a torrent that pours endlessly into the Grief Seed. You release the Grief that forms your wings to go with it.
You're everted back into reality without ceremony, standing on the roof, with the Grief Seed near you, still encased in the sphere of Grief.
With a gesture, you move the sphere closer to you and let it crumble back into marbles, the Grief Seed falling into your outstretched hand. You hold it up to the light, squinting at it. It's... Grief. Very compressed Grief, into a tiny, inky black sphere embraced in filigree, and at the very center...
Hildegard.
You sigh.
"What were you trying to do, Sabrina?" a familiar telepathic voice asks you. You turn, to see the white form of Kyuubey sitting on the edge of the roof.
I think the mistake here, well, ok, not the only mistake here obviously, but one of them, is assuming that Grief and Magic are fundamentally the same. Thinking about it rationally, there has to be a reason why when you use magic, you accumulate grief. Grief can't simply be magic, or that exchange wouldn't make sense. An empty soul gem will have no grief, but a whole lot of magic. Maybe. And as you spend the magic, why does it get replaced with grief? Is there a conversion process, or is grief created from the use of magic through some universal law, or something else?
Magic's pretty cool. Rin used it to restart someone's heart. Chouko used a pulse of magic to revive Yuko from unconciousness.
Anyway, here's what I think:
Step 1: Empty the grief seed 100%.
Step 2: Fill the emptyness with magic.
Step 3: ???
Not much of a plan, but perhaps a little farther than we've gotten so far.
After what feels like hours, you feel the massive river of Grief begin to dry up, slowly petering out over the next few minutes. All that's left in there is a quiescent Hildegard. And you try to remove that, too.
... it doesn't move. Your magical fingers simply slide right off a target that doesn't... quite seem to respond to your prodding. You go slightly cross-eyed - it feels like you're less trying to remove the filling from a doughnut, and more like you're trying to remove the concept of a doughnut from the doughnut. You give up on it after trying for a few more moments.
So "Hildegard" can't be grief, or else we would be able to control it. This is also something that is present in both grief seeds and soul gems. The crucial ingredient in both, even.
I think this is the soul. Yeah, people have already speculated this, I'm sure.
You look around. Depending from your shoulders are ten meter long swathes of the night sky of an alien world carved into reality., your wings, larger than you've ever made before. You might actually be able to fly with these. The air is thick with hundreds of basketball sized balls of Grief, drifting aimlessly about in the air and bumping into each other with dull clacks. In your hand is a Grief Seed -maybe it's just a Seed now since there isn't any Grief inside?- unlike any other you've seen, clear crystal with a single inky black spot in the exact center instead of midnight black obsidian.
"Um," you say eloquently.
Kirika lets out an impressed whistle.
"So... yeah," you say after a moment. You toss the empty Seed at Oriko, who reaches up to catch it, her sleeve sliding back for a moment to reveal a tightly bound splint.
"I suppose you can guess what I wanted to try out," you tell Oriko.
"Yes," Oriko says. "Kirika?"
"Are you sure, Oriko?" the black haired girl asks, a worried frown on her face as she fumbles in her pockets.
Oriko concentrates, and nods. Kirika smiles, and pulls out Oriko's Soul Gem, holding it up. Without hesitation, the seer touches the Seed to her Soul Gem.
Nothing dramatic happens. Oriko's Soul Gem becomes cleaner, and the emptied Seed becomes a little cloudy, almost imperceptibly so.
Stop right here. Super important. We emptied the seed, but it still absorbed Oriko's grief. I'll note that afterwards we stuffed all the excess grief right back in, so it's not like the seed was underfilled, nor like the seed rejects grief at all (we in fact noted it absorbed it more readily than most). And as we all recall, later the same day, the seed spilled some of its grief that we stuffed back in into the other seed in our pocket. And we didn't make any other changes to it in the interim.
I don't really understand the difference, since all we did was remove the grief briefly, then stuff it back in a few hours later. That act changed the properties of the seed. We need to experiment with both longer-term or permanent grief removal, and with how magic interacts with this scenario, among perhaps other ideas.
"Why does this Grief Seed look like that?" Homura asks, pointing at Hildegard's Grief Seed, in its smoky, rather than obsidian black, glory. The black haired girl is frowning at the odd looking Grief Seed - you suppose she would have seen plenty of about-to-hatch Grief Seeds, but this, on the other hand, would be the first half-empty one she's come across.
"I extracted some Grief from it to make my wings," you reply. "Speaking of which, um, let me try something?"
Without waiting for an answer, you hurriedly put Hildegard's Seed aside for a moment, and yank at the Grief in Aurora's. The Grief comes free almost sulkily, heavy, ropy streamers oozing from the Grief Seed. It almost feels like the Witch is trying to hang on to the Grief, but you counter that easily.
You observe Aurora's Grief Seed closely as the Grief flows away - you can feel an impression of the Witch again, the blues and blacks and marble of the Barrier trying to reform - the Witch was definitely trying to hatch again. There's a sensation of... hunger, predation maybe?
Hildegard, by contrast, is simply... quiet, the Grief sitting immobile within the Grief Seed. You wonder, and hope that perhaps it's turning back into a Soul Gem. Maybe, maybe not - nothing seems to be happening right now.
You convert the Grief from Aurora's Grief Seed into marbles, forming a several hundred which you pack neatly away in your sling bag.
Mami visibly relaxes as the Grief Seed returns to a more conventional state, subtle tension of her muscles releasing. "That's amazing, Sabrina," she murmurs.
Homura nods in silent agreement. "Could I have a look at the other Grief Seed?" she asks.
Homura's definitely a willing partner to this particular branch of research. She's evidently interested. I can't imagine why not. Maybe she even already knows something we don't. We need to get her in on this.
PLUS, and this is important, Homura is likely a veteran at manipulating magic. Whereas we are shit at it. We need that expertise.
You lean back. "So, did you call your parents?" you ask, deliberately shifting the topic to keep her off balance.
"Eh?" Kirika asks. "Oh, yeah, I did. They're uh... Oriko talked to them. I... um." She looks downcast.
"Right," you sigh. To be expected, honestly.
When Kirika next speaks, it's her turn to throw you off. "Thanks, I guess."
"Huh?" You sit up, and cock an eyebrow at the berserker.
"For, you know, not killing us," Kirika says.
You shrug. "I want everyone to live. I really do."
"Laudable," Oriko says, entering the room, and the conversation, with a steaming teapot. "But you realize-" What she's about to say is cut off as she returns to the kitchen, presumably to bring out the cups.
"You realize that it may not be possible," Oriko says as she walks back in, with a stack of cups held in her hand.
"Perhaps," you allow. "But I refuse to believe it's impossible." You'd imagine that there's metaphorical fire burning in your eyes with that statement as you meet and hold Oriko's gaze defiantly, brows knitting heavily and head tilting back just so.
... Maybe you should try to learn some illusion magic so you can make that literal.
Oriko blinks first. "A fine dream," she says, and busies herself pouring out the tea. The fragrance hits you first - gyokuro again, it seems.
I'm pretty sure Sabrina exposing Hildegarde's witch core to magic is what actually 'broke' the seed. I mean, it still functions like a grief seed, but the function was weakened at least temporarily. What I assume is the main reason why one grief seed 'out pulled' the other.
Aurora on the other hand should function perfectly fine, but yes it needs testing.
And then Mami comes face to face with the nefarious rich bitch Mami Tezuka, and Homura must battle with her wicked doppleganger, Homura Akagi.
And Sabrina will face her ultimate rival, the Hope-controlling but Lawful Evil Spellman (No First Name), who seems to be vaguely African maybe? Or Latina, perhaps? Who knows.

...when was the last time we called our resident cheese lover? ( forgive me, I forgot her name. The one who's witch is the one who bites Mami's head off in canon).

Time dilation. As we continue to accumulate grief we gain additional karmic mass. Because our ability means we will never transform into a metastable witch form we can continue to do so forever. This prevents the formation of a grief event horizon (ie Witch Barrier). As we approach the singularity the laws of physics starts to break down.
Fortunately, the quest should grind to a relative halt due to time dilation well before that, so from our perspective as outside observers this will never happen, though for Sabrina in the Quest the voices will just continue to speed up until they blueshift into imperceptibility. (Or redshift. Not sure exactly how that applies.)
That's more than two thirds of Sabrina's life that's ocurred today.
...
We're so gonna apologize to Oriko for our own hypocrisy amongst other things. But let's not be the only ones to apologize.
After we're done, let's introduce Sayaka to Oriko.
Sabrina: "What was that Oriko? You burned down her house to save her life? No good deed goes unpunished! Give her another black eye, Sayaka! Kirika stop struggling! Oriko said to not help her!"
Oriko: "I did n-!"
CRUNCH!
Oriko: "Ddd nugh... Oogh."
Sabrina: "Eh, black eye, broken nose, close enough."
"Yes, I so believe someone's taken to calling me that recently," you say, glaring past Moe to Sakura. The teleporter crosses her arms, lips already shaping the words, before Rin nudges her sharply. She subsides, jaw set stubbornly.
You look back at Moe. "Do I have your agreement not to cause trouble?" you ask, meeting her crimson eyed stare, your own head tilted down to let your brows shadow your eyes. "We'll be quite happy to finish any trouble you feel like starting, but I don't want to keep you bound up like that, either. Then we can move on to waking your friends up, because I'm not going to repeat myself."
The shadow controller considers that for a moment, crimson eyes flicking between you, Mami, and Kirika. "Yes, you have my word," she says formally.
"Alright. Mami?" you ask. Mami nods, ribbons already rippling away from Moe's hands and wrists.
Moe remains sitting, flexing her wrists, before gently pushing herself to her feet. She rotates her shoulder in an exaggerated shrug, one hand questing over the... formerly absent limb. You rise smoothly alongside her, and take a step back to give her some room. Yumi stands too, moving backwards.
Next, then. Sasami, you think. An effort of will brings the... you're not going to call it a meat wagon, not even in your head... the hearse? No, that sounds even worse. You deposit Sasami's body on the rooftop and walk over, Mami, Kirika, Moe, and the rest of the Sendai girls trailing along in your wake.
Moe looks deeply uneasy at the sight of her friend's corpses, her eyes tracking the platform as you move it away, out of sight. She shudders, and moves over to Sasami's sides, kneeling beside her to grab her hand between both of hers. Another small shudder runs through her body, and Moe looks up at you, question in her eyes.
Even if they're mercenaries, and you're not even decided on that point, it still can't be easy to see what does amount to the corpses of your friends.
Sasami. Her costume's a cream coloured affair vaguely reminiscent of a plain ballgown, given character by a thousand tiny gems woven into the fabric, shimmering in the faint light cast by streetlights far below. Without prompting, Mami's already binding Sasami with ribbons, golden yellow bands contrasting sharply with the girl's dress.
You poke around in your dwindling collection of Soul Gems. Just three left - Sasami, Atsuko, and Akiko. That mad girl from Asunaro would probably be impressed by your collecting skills. Probably think you're rather odd for returning them, tho- why are you thinking about Asunaro?
You shake the thought from your head, and hand Sasami's Soul Gem to Moe. The shadow controller takes the small, smoky grey quartz-like Gem reverently with both hands, and places it on the girl's chest.
Sasami's awakening is quiet, her nostrils flaring as her chest expands in a huge inhale. Moe immediately pulls her into a tight hug, Sasami jerking instinctively and struggling violently. You can hear Moe whispering to her, the words indistinct but the tone clear. You're safe. It's OK.
The girl sags into the hug, her arms closing around Moe.
You wait patiently, still eyeing them warily. A quick look at Kirika reassures you that she's still poised and ready to intervene if necessary. Eventually, Sasami relaxes out of the hug, Moe letting her go. Sasami takes a deep breath, looking up at you, her hands clenched into fists.
You meet the gaze evenly.
Moe takes one of Sasami's hands, holding it between both of hers and gently teasing it out of the fist.
Sasami sighs, and looks away. "Thank you," she says grudgingly. "For your mercy."
You roll your eyes. "I'm not a monster. Has Miss Nishimura informed you of what happened?"
Sasami nods. "I surrender. I will not fight."
"OK," you say. Mami's ribbons twist and dissolve off the girl's limbs, and Moe helps her to her feet. Sasami winces as she rises, running her hands through her short blonde hair.
You nod as she stands there quietly, a corner of your mind already directing your Grief platform in to deposit the last member of their party on the rooftop. As Mami binds the girl, you pass Atsuko's Soul Gem to Moe, who recieves it with both hands. She hands it to Sasami, in turn.
Atsuko's wake up isn't particularly dramatic, Sasami and Moe both holding her in a tight hug as she re-orients on the world. They inform her of the current situation, and Mami releases her, the three of them standing in a short row in front of you.
"Alright, then," you say, looking at the three Fukushima girls in front of you, and the Sendai girls standing off to the side. "First point. I'm Sabrina, just Sabrina. This is Tomoe Mami, and Kure Kirika," you introduce yourself. "Who should I address?"
Without hesitation, Sasami steps forward, dress sparkling under the dim light. "I am Koizumi Sasami. This is Akiyama Atsuko, and Nishimura Moe."
"OK," you say, looking at Sasami. "Second point. I'm not going to interfere with your deal with Sendai," you say, gesturing at Yumi. "Admittedly, Hamasaki is no longer in charge, but however Miss Minami wants to handle it is between you."
"Lastly..." you draw in a deep breath. "What the hell were you thinking?" you roar. "Do you know how much collateral damage you idiots did?"
Kuvira -Atsuko- looks mutinous, opening her mouth to complain.
You ignore her, as you let your tightly controlled anger flare.
"I don't care," you snarl, stepping forward.
They step backwards.
You jab a finger at Atsuko, the metal controller leaning away from it like it's a live snake. "I don't care what you thought. The streets? At fucking rush hour? You tore up half the goddamned city in your rampage." Rounding on Sasami, you continue onwards, pent up rage venting itself. "And you! Miss fucking Ramiel! Do you know the concept of line of god damned fire? Look!"
You throw your arm wide, narrowing missing a wide-eyed Kirika to gesture at the damage, visible even from this distance and through the curtain of rain.
You sag, panting, still glaring furiously at the three.
They look surprised. Surprised, and faintly guilty.
Your nostrils flare as you fight for control over your temper. Mami steps closer to you, resting one hand on your shoulder. She has to reach up a little to do it.
"We just spent an hour doing rescue work," you grate out. "And that's on you. And." You close your breath, taking a deep breath, and blowing it out violently. Inhale blue, exhale red. "And I'm still going to offer you a deal, the same one I've been offering every group I've come across. It's up to you whether you want to hear it. Oh, and..."
The Grief Seeds you'd snatched from Moe drift to a halt in front of her. "These are yours," you say.
Hesitantly, and very nervously, the shadow controller plucks one from the air, pinching it between two fingers and looking as if she expects it to explode in her hands. When it doesn't, she carefully collects the others.
"Anyway," you say. "Discuss it, I guess? I won't force you to listen, and well, you're free to go."
Yumi steps forward tenatively, giving you a cautious glance. "I will honour the agreement... twenty Grief Seeds, and any healing necessary, which... has already been applied." She raises the other plastic bag of Grief Seeds.
Sasami nods at Yumi, and looks at you. "May we discuss this amongst ourselves?"
You nod. "Yes," you say.
Sasami turns to the rest of her group, the three standing quietly. Telepathy.
When you think about it, it's really quite odd looking. Just three girls in outlandish costumes, looking intently at each other. You know they're holding an intense conversation, but not a word passes their mouths.
Mami's hand on your shoulder shifts to your hand, which she holds tightly. You look at her, and she smiles at you, a trace of worry visible in the lines of her face. You smile back, trying to put reassurance into the expression. Mami ducks her head a little.
Finally, Sasami turns to face you again. She double takes at the sight of Mami holding your hand, her eyes snapping down and then back up to your face again. Mami blushes.
Sasami blinks, and a moment passes before she speaks. "We... thank you, Miss Sabrina, but we would prefer to leave, with our payment, if that's acceptable?"
Ah, yes, that reminds me of all the ruminating I did to determine the purpose of Oriko's initial actions, that I never saw any speculation about in the thread (the events happened long before I found this thread).
Lemme find the notes...
Here, motivations for sending Hitomi to the hospital and burning Sayaka's home:
1) Interactions with Kyousuke
-- a) Similar injuries give a common bond
-- b) Much more time available to visit together than Sayaka has
-- c) Accelerating Hitomi's desire to hook up with Kyousuke
-- d) More interactions that do not revolve around music
-- e) Mitigating effects of Sayaka's hero worship
-- f) Stabilize mindset to reduce suicidal tendencies when all he had was Sayaka's visits
-- g) Increase exposure to the idea of Hitomi+Kyousuke for Sayaka
2) Guard against Sayaka contracting/grief spiraling
-- a) Due to 1f, Sayaka doesn't feel extra pressure to make the wish for Kyousuke (avoid one major grief spiral cause)
-- b) Due to 1g, Hitomi doesn't have to drop things in Sayaka's lap after her contract (avoid one major grief spiral cause)
3) Hitomi is present when Sayaka and her family are brought in after the fire
-- a) By being immediately present, she offers them a place to stay.
-- b) This increases the social closeness between Sayaka and Hitomi, and reduces propriety of acting counter to Hitomi's interests.
-- c) This reduces emotional friction between the two, and reduces Sayaka's obsession with Kyousuke (avoid one major grief spiral cause)
4) Fire is set in Miki's apartment
-- a) Emotional trauma changes Sayaka's mental focus on what she 'needs'.
-- b) If she contracts, it's more likely to be abstractly focused (fire, counter-fire, general healing in support of Hitomi, etc) than focused on one individual.
5) With all the above combined, Sayaka is far less likely to grief spiral, and her wish is likely to be more productive.
Basically, two fairly trivial acts saved Sayaka because of all the butterflies released. The fact that it looked like Oriko was trying to kill her was just a superficial effect.
Now, I will grant my initial speculations when things first happened were that Oriko was maneuvering to prevent Sayaka from contracting at all, and specifically to remove our options on a healer. Given our discussions with her, it doesn't seem to be that extreme.
