THAT WAS NOT THE SITUATION AND YOU KNOW IT.
The situation was that an upstart nomad had conquered a few tribes an made and insulting trade offer to the resident great power. Now sure we have bribed nomads before to not be a problem that's normal, what isn't is for a nomad to make DEMANDS of us. We are paying THEM, they are not forcing US to do this. So this guy comes along and is like accept this trade deal or else. The fact that we didn't attempt to annihilate him and merely SNUB THEM ON A TRADE DEAL shows the voters restraint. We've fought nomads before and we have destroyed nomad warlords before, how were the Ymaryn to know that this one would be different?

I'm really amused by the people who are surprised we got fucked by this. It's hard to act surprised when 90% of the thread was saying this was going to happen lol.

Yes. Because going for war, just like every other polity and empire, will of course lead to just magnificent results! You know how that will end? We'll write "unification" on our banners and simply tumble from one war to the next, winning some, losing some, and on the whole becoming just another kingdom at war with its competitors, nothing more. Your way would ensure we become nothing more than a small fish kingdom somewhere in the Caucasus.

Instead, we need to focus on what us once great in the first place. Invest into things besides war, things that actually give us a return in the long run. As we have before.
Oh yes. Let's be the small power so we can stick to our oh so superior morals for the five minutes of life we'll have until a Nomad clan or enemy empire kills us.

Moral superiority only works as long as you're in a nation or position where you are safe.

A strong army and large nation = Safe people and and more time rebuilding our morality and culture. Instead of being subjugated and having it destroyed again and again.

Hmmm.... Hmmm.... Oh! I'm in a bit of a pickle. Hmmm...

its how we started, when the People became Three People became One. Taking the vote that gets us valleyhome, sacred forest, and redshore, and the Fire Is Warm policies? its a return to the basics that made us so successful.
And our highest 'God' is based off of a bandit, our First great female leader lead military tech to the chariots/war wagons.

Sorry, but did the recent update mean nothing to you?

The whole reason we shattered is because we were too arrogant to use diplomacy against "barbarians".
Sometimes having an army won't actually solve all of your problems, surprise surprise.

Being the asshole conqueror like you want to be just means that people will be waiting to pick apart your carcass once you die.

A strong army and large nation
And what makes you think we'll get that? "Trying to build a large empire with a strong army" is what everyone tries to do. The end result is just them smashing each others' heads in and wasting all money on war. What makes you think we will succeed and our opponents won't? We first need to invest to make sure we actually have the superior resource base.
