The problem is our foundational trait, the VERY first and single most upgraded social trait that defines us as a people will throw a riot.

Which is why we're spamming enough trees to run an Industrial economy long enough to breakthrough to electricity, and tech racing everyone. Like with Iron, you can take the environmentally friendly route if you're literally centuries ahead of your rivals.
That's true, its the most inefficient and wasteful way, but if we can't change it we can't change it.

Sometimes things break just perfectly for a person or a group, everything lining up perfectly.

Sometimes they don't.

For Yshuyn, the past few years had definitely been the latter category.

The drought had come as predicted, and it was as bad as predicted. The lowlands and the most populous part of the kingdom got it the worst, with several rivers running dry over the few years of poor to no rain - not the biggest rivers thankfully, but some of the smaller but still significant tributaries - and the impact on the food supply was enormous. Fortunately, forewarned was forearmed, and even though they were trying to do multiple things at once the king managed to ensure that while the People went hungry, no one really starved.

Unfortunately, everything outside the organization of the granaries rapidly fell apart as the People went to war with the Trelli to support the rebelling slaves. Well... not everything, the actually fighting was at worst a stalemate, but the politics had turned into an absolute nightmare. The first and biggest blow was that the Khemetri had not responded to the declaration of war by the People upon the Trelli, seeing it as a betrayal of the principles of brotherhood and friendship of the Games to choose to declare war against the very people they had competed peacefully against in prior years, with the Metal Workers soon following suit. Then, once it became clear that the People were attacking both the Trelli and the local landowners to support the slaves the feuding nobility had decided that it wasn't that big of an argument they were having, and set aside their differences in order to fight the outsiders. Finally, it soon turned out that the slaves were mostly unhappy with the People interfering. Oh, they took food and weapons provided readily enough, and some were actually receptive to the idea that the People were there not for conquest but at the behest of their gods, but far too many slaves saw the People as just using their struggle as a convenient cover for a land grab.

Others, somewhat more informed about how the system worked, were more than a little ticked off about the fact that the People had stood aside and traded with the Trelli for centuries, the flow of goods allowing for the system to be supported so that they could be hauled off to the plantations, to be worked, bred, and sold like animals. It was actually a rather valid criticism, and the entire mess had sparked a major discussion back home. The People had definitely made a series of mistakes here, but the question was where?

Love of Wisdom (Maxed development) -> Philosopher Kings (Maxed Development)
Through intellect and careful testing of the world, the People have developed a love of knowledge and learning, and expect their leaders to follow suit.
Pros: Majorly improved use of study actions and innovation rolls, improved leader skill sets
Cons: Question social foundations, Over Leveled Penalty: -3 Mysticism, -1 Tech, & -1 Wealth per turn due to education stress
In Service to Order too rigid to function alongside Philosopher Kings, it has been discarded. Nemesis Fashion has drawn from the Trelli.

Rule of Gold
He who has the gold, makes the rules (which are often about who is allowed to have gold).
Pros: Mercenary companies do not occupy subordinate slots, double efficiency Wealth gain from market control
Cons: Loss of trade dominance causes Stability loss, worse penalties for failing Trader quests

The answer was that the People were now arguing a lot more, and arguing for ever greater education to be devoted to the leaders (read: patricians and priests) to ensure that kings and councils would not lead the People into such a disastrous war once more.

Somewhat irritatingly, the arguments and problems had lead the guilds not to developing grand new weapons as was hoped by some segments of society, but rather to figuring out new pottery. Okay, technically what happened was that reduced access to supplies had lead to experiments with different clays and thinner pots, and in combination with the somewhat not useful byproducts of recent alchemical research had produced new kinds of fine pottery that had a variety of colourful and sturdy glazes. Not the most practical of things at the time, although more than one alchemist praised the new glazes for the safe storage of reagents that fared poorly in glass for mysterious reasons.

Total slots? I think we picked up a Social and Honor one in between.
Nope, i think the last time we gained value slots was way back after the tax crisis, when we gained 1 each of spiritual and honour;
1 Spiritual Value slot + 1 Honour Code slot
[X] A significant expedition will be

We actually probably are behind our neighbors in value slots now. We were ahead, with 3 of each. But by now, o imagine we're behind by 1-3 slots from any civ that did much if any focus on social megaprojects or golden age or even just major crises. On the other hand, I imagine our values are very advanced. @Academia Nut is that accurate? Fewer values but more hyper focused into all but honourable death?

Environmentalism as a trait make things easier, while making things harder.

We COULD destroy our trait so we'll be able to take on the industrial revolution easier, but ironically it will make transitioning to nuclear energy and other form of green energy MUCH harder.

Witness today. The political apparatus in much of the world is simply unwilling to make the hard decisions to abandon fossil fuel until it's too late.

We no longer have the stupid trait.

I disagree. Much of the stuff blocking advanced Nuclear Energy is a combination of environmentalists, general peace lobbyists, colluding with entrenched industry interests.
