Extra Scene: Tower Ninjutsu
Shortly after Chapter 570…
"At ease, chūnin," said the Hokage.
"I await your orders, Lord Hokage," said Akane, straightening up to a stiff parade rest.
Asuma chuckled and shook his head. Somewhere behind him, Akane sensed motion from one of the ANBU agents, maybe Owl, waiting in the trees around the training ground. She ignored it, and continued to look into the middle distance ahead of her.
"Gōketsu Akane," Asuma said as if reading off a file, though he had nothing but a thin cigarette in his hands as he paced along the training field. "A combat-specialist chūnin, almost ready for a promotion to special-jōnin after only two years in her current rank. With whatever clan tricks you held out, I suspect you could already pass evaluations. Are you certain you don't want the promotion? After all, it's quite prestigious to be promoted as young as eighteen, as your clanmate Yuno has already discovered."
Akane shook her head. "No, sir. After recent events, I think it's best not to draw any attention to myself."
Asuma chuckled again, then took a drag from the cigarette. "Very wise, Akane. Hopefully the ANBU do their job of keeping bystanders away, otherwise you'll draw vastly more attention for receiving a personal training session from the Hokage. Regardless, I'll have them leave a note in your files to accelerate the promotion process whenever you feel ready."
"Understood, sir."
Akane waited as Asuma continued to pace, slowly burning the cigarette down.
"Gōketsu Akane. We'll be returning you to regular field missions, primarily chakra beast suppression. However, chakra beast suppression missions are not entirely safe, and given your status, I want to maximize your efficacy and survivability. To my understanding, you excel in close quarters combat, but have no substantial ranged options. Flame Aura augments your taijutsu, but can harm you if you lose concentration on it mid-battle. Finally, apart from your clan's 'Rocket Boots' seals, you lack mobility options. You may be unable to reach allies that are in danger, and you may be unable to escape from a dangerous situation yourself. These are my notes from the evaluation we did – if you wish to correct me or add any extra details, please do so now."
"No, sir."
"Very well," Asuma said. "You only have Fire Element, correct?"
"Yes, sir."
"In the long run, you should develop additional elements. Fire Element ninjutsu are strong offensively, but rarely have adequate defensive or mobility options. Your mobility is important. Not only is it the primary obstacle to using your superior close-combat skills to destroy any enemies, but your survival in adverse situations depends on your ability to escape. You will not be able to win every fight you get into, Akane. Between strong mobility ninjutsu and skywalkers, you should at least be able to escape any fight you cannot win. You are well stocked on skywalkers, correct? Ensure you have at least two hours of flight time before any mission you take."
"Understood, sir."
"Still," Asuma said, after another puff on the cigarette, "you are in luck. My father was a masterful ninjutsu creator. With my admittedly scattered knowledge of the Warring Clans Era, it's possible to me that he was the greatest Fire Element ninjutsu master since the Sage himself. While Fire Element mastery is insufficient to learn his strongest techniques, he did spend time creating techniques suitable for non-ninjutsu specialists, especially for our Sarutobi clanmates. In particular, he designed a number of Fire Element techniques for battlefield mobility.
"Before I show you anything, remember the conditions for learning these techniques. All of these techniques are very powerful – there are few Fire Element movement techniques and perhaps none as strong as these ones. These techniques belong to the Tower, and have similar restrictions as Shadow Clone. You are to minimize the extent to which others are even aware of their existence. You are to minimize the number of details about these techniques that you share. You are not to teach them to anyone, under any circumstances. If you cannot abide by these conditions, tell me now. Is that clear?"
"Yes, sir," Akane said, nodding vigorously.
"Good," Asuma said. He dropped the butt of his cigarette and ground it into the mud of the training field. "In which case, let us begin. Earth Element: Basic Pillar!"
Off to the side of the training field, nearly beyond the effective range of a thrown kunai, a thick, cylindrical stone pillar rose out of the ground.
"Pretend that is a shuriken user harassing you from beyond your ability to retaliate. The first technique will provide you with a ranged option to do so. Watch carefully. Fire Element: Fireball Inversion!"
Asuma worked his way through a series of handseals, then inhaled deeply and exhaled in a burst. From his mouth came a stream of fire that quickly coalesced into a head-sized ball that shot across the training field and exploded against the pillar. Once the smoke cleared, the pillar was visibly singed, and the ground around it charred from the explosion of heat.
"Very impressive, sir," Akane said.
Asuma chuckled again. "I'm well aware that it looked just like a normal fireball ninjutsu, Akane. That is not all this ninjutsu is capable of doing. Get into a combat stance. I will cast it again. This time, it will do something very different."
Akane nodded and bent her knees, dropping her center of mass lower to the ground to dodge or block an incoming attack.
"Fire Element: Fireball Inversion!"
Asuma inhaled and exhaled again, shooting the ball of fire at the pillar. This time, Asuma crouched a moment before the ball impacted the pillar. Suddenly, Asuma exploded into a conflagration, and Akane leaped back to avoid being consumed by the sudden flame. Akane looked to the side to see Asuma standing where the ball was supposed to have exploded against the pillar. He drew a trench knife and scored a jagged slash through the pillar where the neck of a human would have been.
"Fireball Inversion," Asuma said as he walked across the training field to Akane, "is a mixed use ninjutsu. It can act as a simple ranged attack if you wish. However, while you are throwing the fireball, a thread of chakra connects you and the fireball much like your connection with a Substitution target. At any point, you may pull on that connection and perform a Substitution. Then, you're suddenly engaged with the ranged weapons user keeping you out, while any opponents that engaged you in melee have a fireball explode in their faces."
"I see, sir," Akane said. "It seems like a very powerful technique."
"That's right," Asuma said. "With a single ninjutsu, it gives you a ranged attack, an escape option, a tactical movement ability, and the ability to punish people who come too close to you. In other words, it's almost the perfect tool to control which of your enemies you wish to engage with."
"Almost the perfect tool, sir?" Akane asked.
Asuma nodded. "Stand back."
Akane stepped back, then stepped back farther as Asuma gestured for her to make even more room.
"Fire Element: Grand Fireball Inversion!"
This time, the flames coming from Asuma's mouth weren't smooth and controlled. Instead, they thrashed chaotically like a turbulent waterwall, expanding as they crossed the clearing and engulfed the target in a growing ball of light. This time, Akane prepared herself as Asuma replaced himself with the two-story high scarlet conflagration. The fireball detonated and despite the extra distance she'd made, Akane still had to Substitute with a log on the far side of the training field to avoid the lashing tongues of flame.
Even Asuma seemed winded by the ninjutsu, but he quickly straightened himself and strode back to Akane. "Grand Fireball Inversion is far superior on multiple dimensions, but we'll save the details until relevant. Work on your Fireball Inversion and general Fire Element mastery, and I will teach you the next stage of the technique when you are ready.
"Fireball Inversion requires focus and many handseals," Asuma said. "It may not be suited for all situations. Therefore, I'll teach you another one of my father's techniques for battlefield movement. Are you ready to observe?"
Akane saluted. "Yes, sir!"
"Very good," Asuma said with a smile. "Fire Element: Basan's Glide!"
Wisps of pale-yellow flames started to rise from the grass around Asuma's feet. Asuma leaned back and the flames expanded along the ground in front of him. The pale-yellow flames licked around Akane's uniform trousers as she stepped out of the way, but the cloth didn't burn.
Asuma glided backwards as the flames steadily expanded on the ground in front of him. He started to skate in loops around Akane, stepping slowly side to side as the flames licked across the ground.
"Basan's Glide augments your movement, quite similarly to the Rocket Boots that your clan uses. It's useful for evading ranged attacks," Asuma said as he twirled and crouched, all while smoothly sliding across the ground on the ghostly yellow flames. "It also gives you a little more speed in a pinch if you need to travel across the battlefield to aid your allies," he said as he exploded out of the crouch in an all-out dash, each step punctuated by a plume of the flames behind him driving him forward.
Asuma skated back to Akane and let the technique dissipate. "There's another feature," Asuma said. "The flames do not actually create heat or cause damage to objects. That means that when enemies are observing the sites of your battles, something that
will happen if you make it to jōnin, they won't be able to tell that you're using a Fire Element movement technique. Such things are rare and can be countered, so reducing the extent of enemy information gathering will help you in the long run."
As the last wisps of the pale-yellow flame faded, Akane looked at the ground around. Unlike the charred circles around the Fireball Inversion demonstrations, the grass where Asuma had skated around instead still seemed pristine – only trampled down in a few places where Asuma had stepped particularly heavily.
"Though," Asuma said, "I will note that you should be careful. The technique's feedback is internal, rather than external. If you overheat while using the technique, you should try to disengage and vent the Fire Element chakra through a ninjutsu. Regardless, that's the second of the three techniques. Are you ready for me to demonstrate the third?"
"Yes, sir."
"You are allowed to ask questions if you want, Akane," Asuma said, smiling. "It doesn't need to be all 'yes, sir,' and 'no, sir.'"
Akane nodded. "I understand. I'm just trying to learn as best as I can. If I'm going to be deployed with other ninja, I'll want to use these techniques to protect them."
"Well, two movement ninjutsu should help you with that. This next technique is purely for your own protection. You mentioned your Firefly technique, a ranged attack ninjutsu. Is that correct?"
"Yes, sir!"
"Good," Asuma said. "Hit me with it. Don't go too hard – stick to something a genin could survive."
"Is that… okay, sir?" Akane asked. "I haven't trained it very much, but I don't want to-"
Asuma waved his hand. "Don't worry about possibly hurting me. Like I said, I have a defensive technique to show you."
"But-"
Asuma laughed. "I know hearing about Hazō's exploits must make you cautious around treason, Akane, but in this one, specific case, I'm giving you permission to attack your Hokage. Don't make this a pattern of habit, but it's fine right now."
"Okay…" Akane said as Asuma backed away to a comfortable range. She brought her hands in unfamiliar handseals. "Fire Element: Firefly!"
The little motes of fiery light that Ken had once used to nearly kill her appeared in the air around her. Slowly, she took control of the sparks with one finger at a time. She looked at Asuma, who nodded. As gingerly as she could, she willed one of the sparks to singe Asuma's upper arm.
Asuma didn't move to dodge. Instead, as the spark came within inches of touching him, his hands suddenly blurred into handseals. "Fire Element: Phoenix Rebirth!" he called out. Suddenly, he was engulfed in a shell of flames that absorbed the spark – Akane felt the moment she lost control over it. Barely an instant later, the shell dissipated into flames, rising into the sky.
Asuma stepped forward. "You really went easy with that one, didn't you? I appreciate it. Regardless, you've seen what it does. Phoenix Rebirth is a very powerful defensive technique that absorbs ninjutsu attacks. It's particularly effective against Fire Element ninjutsu, but it has use against Lightning and even some Wind Element ninjutsu as well."
"I see," said Akane. "So this technique is meant to defend me against ninjutsu users?"
"Yes, but there's more," Asuma said. "I can't be sure without examining Flame Aura in detail, but I suspect that you'll be able to use Phoenix Rebirth to eliminate the backlash when Flame Aura breaks. In fact, if Phoenix Rebirth absorbs enough energy, its excess chakra can invigorate you. If you calibrate your casting to match the energy Flame Aura outputs when broken, Phoenix Rebirth will empower you when you lose Flame Aura."
"This sounds like it suits me very well, Lord Hokage," Akane said. "Thank you. Is this another of your father's techniques?"
"Actually, no," Asuma said. "It was one of the ninjutsu submitted to the Will of Fire Contest, by the Hagoromo Clan in fact. However, you can understand why I didn't have it added to the Library. A general purpose defensive technique against Fire Element ninjutsu aids Leaf ninja remarkably little, since most of our enemies won't have Fire Element. However, if the technique were to leak to enemies, which is somewhat likely for any of the Library ninjutsu as they will be widely learned, it would disproportionately harm Leaf. Just as with the others, it's important that you do not share this and do your best to prevent others from even learning of its existence. Is that clear?"
Akane nodded. "I understand, sir!"
"Very good. These three techniques should help substantially shore up your weaknesses. If you learn these well, you can mitigate the only weakness of your very strong Flame Aura, and get yourself out of many more adverse situations. Let us start with the most complex of the three: Fireball Inversion. Watch as I make the handseals. Tiger, Boar, Dog, Hare…"
Sorry for the delay in getting the Tower ninjutsu for you. We'll be discussing Asuma's offerings to Hazou or Noburi next – if you have suggestions, feel free to let us know. You may now vote how to spend Akane's XP on these techniques. Assuming you vote to level them up, Akane will retroactively have a few more training sessions with Asuma learning these techniques and integrating them with her combat style.
Please give feedback on the mechanics of these techniques! Once we've made any needed revisions and are convinced they're mechanically sound, we'll add them to the ninjutsu doc.

The user spits a fireball at a target within range. The target and everyone in melee must dodge against an attack made with Fireball Inversion.
After defense rolls have been made but prior to the attack resolving, the user may choose to Substitute with the fireball. The user enters melee with the target, and the user makes a second attack with max(Substitution, Fireball Inversion) against everyone that was originally in melee with the user.
In other words, the ninjutsu may be used as:
- A normal attacking ninjutsu, or
- An escape/tactical repositioning ninjutsu that moves the user while simultaneously attacking enemies currently in melee with the user.
- Since this looks like an attack, enemies near the user's target point may burn resources unnecessarily to dodge a fake attack while the user Substitutes.
While this is not Reflexive like Substitution, note that it potentially has a longer range.

Jets of ghostly pale-yellow flame sprout from the user's feet, letting them leap around the battlefield with ease.
The user gains the Aspect "
Basan's Glide", on which the user gets Effect tags per turn. This Aspect can be used on Athletics or movement checks. This Aspect is multi-taggable, and up to two tags or Invokes can be used on a single roll.
Additionally, the user gains access to a new Supplemental: "Flame Glide", which can be taken once per turn. When Flame Glide is used:
- The user must spend 3 tags on "Basan's Glide" (or invoke 3 times, or any mixture).
- The user may make a SDC Basan's Glide check against TN 0.
- If the user generates (1 + Border) shifts, the user may move into an adjacent Zone.
In other words, Flame Glide is a Supplemental Sprint that doesn't have an Athletics penalty, doesn't have a penalty to any other Sprints you take in the current turn, and can be used to cross into Zones with Border. Together with Supplemental Sprints, Flame Glide lets you move 2 Zones with only your supplementals. Alternatively, Flame Glide can add an extra Zone of movement to your Standard Sprints.
When the ninjutsu is cast, a counter starts at 0. Every time "Basan's Glide" is tagged or invoked, the counter increases by 1. At the start of the user's turn, the counter decreases by (Effect/2), rounded down.
If the counter ever exceeds the user's Physique AB, the user gains the Aspect "Overheated". The Aspect is removed when the user ends a turn with the counter below Physique AB.
While the user has "Overheated":
- The user suffers a -AB penalty on all physical skills
- The user gains a +AB bonus on all Fire Element ninjutsu
- Using a Fire Element ninjutsu while "Overheated" reduces the counter by (Effect of the Fire ninjutsu).
The fire-jets from Basan's Glide do not have environmental effects. They do not set the terrain on fire or produce heat, and they cannot be used for attacking.

The user shrouds themselves in a shell of Fire-element chakra as they are hit by an attack, absorbing it and transforming it into greater strength for the user.
As a Reflexive Supplemental in response to being hit by an Energy-type attack, the user may cast Phoenix Rebirth and gain (Effect) points of ablative armor against the attack. This armor is only ½ effective against Energy:Lightning (only up to half of the total stress generated by the attack can be absorbed by the armor).
This effect ends once the triggering attack is resolved.
If
all of the armor provided by Phoenix Rebirth is broken by the attack, the user experiences a surge of energy. The user gets (Effect) points of chakra boost next round for free.
