PSA: This voting cycle is extended until the Thursday deadline (noon London time on Wednesday 13th of October). I will be writing the update. @faflec can take it from here.

PSA: The following has been added to the author's note on the update:

The assault team has returned to Leaf and made their reports to Asuma. Kei and Noburi briefed Hazō on how things went down, which is how you know about all this.

PSA: Research is complete on silk armor.

The results are not what you hoped for. It's warm and comfortable and people like having it, but it does not provide game-mechanical protection. The QM reasoning is that a silk bodysuit is not going to defend against energy damage (fire/lightning). It's not going to defend against blunt force (punching). It's good at reducing piercing/slicing damage but with ninja muscles behind it it's debatable how much difference that will actually make. For simplicity, we are simply saying that it does not have a game-mechanical effect.

People are willing to buy it, so it can become a modest source of income and good will, and it might occasionally have a small narrative effect. The expectation should be that it will not be factored into combats.

:(

Maybe it's the wrong type of spider silk? Oh well. It's more money, at least!

Might still be good for other applications, such as skyslider, especially if it's lighter than other materials.

With this in mind, knowing the distance is around 200m and that the assault team spent ~a day there, I think it's reasonable to say that there were 8 days of making contracts in Leaf. Assuming it's acceptable, I'll calculate Kei's SC XP based on that.

SC Training; Akane has 1.0x and Kei 1.2, as per usual.

Akane: +60 XP
Kei: (8/13) * 1.2 * 60 = +44.3 XP (rounded down to nearest .1)

It's unclear why spider silk is only going to provide us a modest income. Lack of clothing range, lack of marketing, silk in general very easy to find, or lack of supply?

Also, I would support investigating different type of spider silks to see if there's better options.

The spidersilk armor might be something to market to civilians? Let them know it won't do anything against ninjas, but will stop another civilian from stabbing or slicing them. And proper silk padding could help against blunt damage done by other civilians.

Or use the spidersilk in other applications? Rope?

Could also block fangs/needles/etc from weaker chakra pests

I've suggested it before but follow my logic here:

1: This chapter proves you can infuse mundane rock, not just Sage Rock(tm).

2: Hazou has downloaded the schematics for a big ol 3D seal replete with detail. If anyone can theory craft sealing with rock, it's him.

3: He has a jutsu that lets him interact with earth on a fundamental level. He can shape it to his exact liking, and he does so by working chakra into the earth. It is possible this technique can be used as the method of infusion. If not, I think it could be easily hacked into doing so.

4: Conclusion: hazou could make 3D seals. However, I think this is strictly worse than paper sealing, besides being waterproof. It takes way longer and has less research for Hazou to draw on.

5: NOW imagine we get a hacked version of earth shaping. This version has a MUCH smaller area of interaction, in exchange for working way faster. An ideal finished product would allow Hazou to use Iron nerve to shape up an explosive seal in seconds. The current ES has him pull his chakra back out, so the hacked version could have him draw out the chakra but leaving some behind along the pathways of the seal, sort of a reverse-infusion.

6: Ideal finished product: hazou can shape seals mid-battle as a supplemental and use sealing as his attack stat.

a few disclaimers:

A: I don't think this is worth pursuing yet. His base stats need improving first, and there's better research priorities. This would be more along the lines of "his jonin gimmick".
B: Due to the nature of how it would plausibly need to interact with Iron Nerve, hazou might need to Hack the technique himself.
I'm still not buying it. We saw stone that's been imbued with effects by jutsu, I think it's a pretty big leap to go from that to 'you can infuse mundane rock in a way sufficient for Sealing'. Without that the rest of the logic falls apart.

Even beyond that, you thankfully acknowledge that stone sealing is by all rights strictly worse than paper sealing because of how much harder it would be to make those seals and the lack of centuries of built-up knowledge and experience, but then turn around and imagine a jutsu which just solves all the problems. I have a feeling this hypothetical jutsu is like asking 'why isn't there a jutsu to spread ink onto paper really fast?' It's not impossible that you can make it work for stone, but if it doesn't already exist (to sealmaster-tier quality and reliability) for ink it's a pretty big leap to assume we can get one easy for stone.

And then even assuming both of these wild assumptions work out somehow, what do we even get? Your example is 'Hazou can now create an explosive seal out of stone mid-combat', but, like, just bring a normal explosive tag? And then you jump all the way to 'he can use Sealing as his attack stat'? This just seems like wishful thinking of the highest order, just because it's a cool visual.
I think that if Kagome doesn't want to have the scroll long term we should just suggest the Hyuga sealmaster getting it. The Hyuga might even be an overall better option than Kagome anyway, since they'll be able to look at the Great Seal more often and with less chance of death.

Heck, with our new tunnel they could just sit underground and map the entire Great Seal out with us to exacting detail over the course of a week. I think that's worth more than Kagome getting to see it once or twice for a few minutes at a time.
Counterpoint: Kagome has deep lore, which sounds quite relevant to the ancient seal of ages past which contains a horror from the time of the Sage.

I am sorry Bird Duke. It is hard to be both rational, and take unnecessary risks when we see a better option. The dice we also very kind to us early on.
You're not wrong about that. Mari spotting the tapir tracks was an honest roll. If she had missed them then you would never have found Isan, never have gotten the Pangolin Scroll, probably (?) never have been accepted into Leaf, the Battle of the Gods wouldn't have happened which means Akatsuki would have had a hard time capturing Naruto and therefore being able to pursue their ritual so the Battle of Nagi Island wouldn't have happened (at least, wouldn't have happened when it did)...things would have proceeded very differently.

More like 400 miles from Leaf to the target. It's that large lake in the north of Earth Country with the small island on it. It's about 200 miles from there to Rock, heading roughly southeast.

Hm, with Noburi refuels, people can travel 100mi per day then? It'll be 8 days of travel and 5 days of prep? But the update indicates:
This update covered 13 days, most of the time spent on finding summon contracts and getting a representative to travel to Pangolin territory in order to be colocated with Noburi.
(emphasis mine)

Is this still right, or should more time have passed? I'll adjust the payout number once I'm clear

Because they bought skywalkers from you, Leaf felt confident enough in their combat superiority that they decided to bait a trap for Yagura (the head of Mist). Yagura took it, and all of Mist's best ninja got killed. This gave Akatsuki the chance to grab the 3-Tails, which had been one of the few jinchūriki they had no easy way to get hold of, since Yagura rarely left his city. They also got the 9-Tails as a bonus, which was nice.

The Stoneshaping jutsu says:

Whenever you use these abilities you can feel the chakra twisting, wanting to do more. You cannot understand what it seeks to do or how to accomplish it, but you are confident that greater skill will unlock potent new abilities.

Why yes, I am the trollish QM. Why do you ask?

There's been a ruling on this before, although I don't have it to hand. I believe it was that ninja with Wakahisa support can travel 20mph for 10h/day 5days/week but I'm sure that @faflec can correct me.

Speaking of which: +3 XP bounty for someone to figure out the timeline dates.

Oh man, I hope we get a cool scene where things about the great seal pop into place for Hazō with his returning Sealing stat and the Stoneshaping jutsu getting 'buffed' by not being injured.

This world's version of Isaac Newton seeing a falling apple is Hazō kicking a rock after his back finally heals :*

@eaglejarl @Velorien Considering the mission was a success and we're probably going to vote for Training Plans(FOOM waits for no one) what is the situation regarding the various training plans we put in pre-mission? Implemented, to implement or we should just consider the XP "free to use" and vote for other training plans?

Speaking of lucky rolls I wonder if Kagome-sensei would have killed us if we haven't succeeded, and him getting a nat 1, on all those series of rolls in the first encounter

Edit: anyone know the creator of stone shaping jutsu? What if we paid a jutsu hacker to figure out what the jutsu does at higher levels?

Also pinging @Velorien @OliWhail:

I'm not fully sure on what date the Interlude took place in, but it should be somewhere in the middle of the timeskip (given that Keiko was about to leave on the mission).

Ah, I'm bad at math. Yeah, they can handle the 800 mile round-trip with no worries since Noburi can refuel on the run. 2 days there, 2 days back, >12 hours there, so I think the original analysis holds up. We can stick with the SC training awards as-is.

Training plans have been applied. Thanks for the reminder.
