I think I can say definitively that that "mile away" is the figurative expression rather than a literal measure.
Would we be able to get a crappy MSpaint map of the estate with a scale and maybe some info on where it fits in to greater Leaf Village so that we can assist you in figuring out the pricing there / know what we're dealing with here?

[x] Action Plan: "More Like a Cobweb, Really"

Voting in case I'm too hung over to remember tomorrow or fail to get up before the deadline. Itachi XP curve here we come.

Going by faflec's description, it's definitely a residence and not a castle. A population of 300,000 implying no more than 115,000 hectares under cultivation given GDP per capita of $1500 means productivity per hectare of no more than $3800 or 38,000 Ryo per year, so the value of pure land should not exceed 380,000 - 760,000 Ryo per hectare, esp if buying in bulk. If we assume agricultural output is only 80% (1150 Japan was ~87% without ninjas) instead of 100% of GDP, productivity per hectare should be no more than $3040 / year with price no more than 300,000 - 600,000 Ryo per hectare.

If Jiraiya actually bought a full square mile (260 hectares) of land, that would cost between 78 and 150 million ryo, but land would only command that value if it were 1) actually arable and 2) being profitably cultivated at the present moment. Then your monthly costs would make sense, but you would also have income of 260 x 33040 = 8 million ryo per year to offset those costs. Plus, having no (some?) experience as a noble lord, there is no reason Jiraiya would buy such a quantity of land. Why strain his finances at such a crucial moment? 260 arable hectares would represent .2% of the cultivable arable land in your entire country.

If the land were not being profitably cultivated, then it would only be worth 10-20% of that value if any, so only 8 - 30 million Ryo on top of the 1-4 million Ryo residence. But then it would make even less sense for Jiraiya to buy it.

Maybe we're thinking about this the wrong way. What can we do to make our land make money for us?

Take out a reverse mortgage against your equity in the land. Worst case you default, they repossess the property and you go live somewhere with 100x fewer expenses. You could spend the reverse mortgage on bribes; to match your liquidity Hiashi would have to reverse mortgage a significant fraction of his own lands or his own clan compound, which seems unlikely.

Only to the extent that we, the playerbase, knows. And the last was mentioned of Vermilion Sigh was Mari reporting to Hiruzen that we'd been blackmailed into buying the goods. I'm guessing that the supply was lost when Hazou was ambushed by Shin back during the Fourth Event, but it's equally possible Hazou recognized that such a prohibited drug was banned in Mist and so they wouldn't bring it with them.

Do reverse mortgages exist yet?

...wait. Why don't we insert modern economics theory in order to become the dominant economic force in Leaf! *cackling manically in Kagome*

A reverse mortgage is just a loan with collateral in the form of a home or estate. If collateral-backed loans exist, they certainly will. It's just a question of which financial entity has the liquidity to make it happen. This circles back to our fundamental financial question - who prints the money in Leaf, and is it a goods-backed or fiat currency?

Here's something you could do: introduce your own Goketsu (or, better, Goketsu-Ino-Shika-Cho) Clan Script. Clan Script can be redeemed for the equivalent amount of currency from the Goketsu clan at the end of every month, or purchased from said clan at the same time for the same rate. All public auctions of Goketsu Goketsu-Ino-Shika-Cho Clan seals products and services will only accept Goketsu Clan Script of issuance date 1 or more months in the past. Goketsu Clan Script of issuance date more than 1 year in the past will receive a 10% bonus to their effective bid.

List of products that could be included:
-Seals
-Pangolin Deployment Missions
-Toad Deployment Missions
-Yamanaka Counseling
-Nara Hours (if available to the public)
-Naruto Deployment Missions
-Seal Research

Create your own petrodollar. It's not currency, it's internal clan script used to facilitate the easy and secure handling of large quantities of cash, reducing cash storage costs. Your cash profits from seignorage will equal the total amount of Goketsu Clan Script in circulation across all of Leaf. Unless Hidden Leaf has sophisticated financial regulations already in place, they won't even understand that what you're doing is profitable.

Hmmm. They seem to not really legislate against what the Nara do with their hours exchange economy thing, and if the Nara are in on this venture I'm not even sure the rest of the powers that be will even understand what we're doing, period. Could be an option...

Ohhh, so it's like Nara hours, or AMI favors.

...welp.

KEI: So how're you gonna get your debt plan through?
HAZOU: I guess I'm gonna finally have to listen to you.
KEI: Really?
HAZOU: Talk less. Glare more.
KEI: hm
HAZOU: Do whatever it takes to get my plan on the council floor.
KEI: You know, Hyuuga and Inuzuka are merciless.
HAZOU: Well. Hate the sin and love the sinner.
HIASHI: Gouketsu.
HAZOU: Oh sorry sis, I gotta go.
KEI: but--
HAZOU: Decisions are happening over dinner.

I don't think Shin took any of our seals (we still had our word half afterwards), so even if we took the drugs with us we should still have them.
