Honestly, indicating that they may have access to wood release seems more likely to increase assaults against them than the opposite. Along with the implication that it is bloodline based, well if they weren't fishing for sexually loose Nara males before I imagine they would be now.

I'm only left to assume that they did it on purpose to increase people targeting them (maybe low key favor to Goketsu to make people forget about Hazo's Armour Jutsu?) or the wood release is just so scary that the mere implication that one possesses it is enough to make enemy nations back off (which is silly given the man who put it on the map was not exempt from trials himself).
Wasn't the whole wood release thing just to divert attention from the fact that the entire thing was just clever uses of storage scrolls? As long as no one else figures it out, we won't immediately be seeing a ton of people from other nations using the exact same stuff.

As Shikamaru said, the Nara are already a key target, given their perceived weakness and economic importance. The Nara aren't a clan of fighters, so their military strength as a clan isn't as important as their economic relevance, but if they don't look like such easy targets then they're less likely to be the focus of economic warfare.

Meanwhile Tobirama can teleport, resurrect the dead and make actual water out of thin air (how did Sand not bow down to him and beg him to teach them to transform their shithole country?).

Bloodlines are overrated.

IIRC the things that made Hashirama scary as all hell were:
Sure, but that's why Hashirama was impressive. Why is the Wood Release impressive? "Super tough wood" and "giant wood golems" are...kind impressive? I guess? It still doesn't really seem to stack up against some of the other nonsense that's flying around.

Wood Release is scary because tailed beasts have a phobia of trees.

HASHIRAMA: Wood Release: Literally Just a Tree no jutsu!
KURAMA: Argh! Jashin Christ! That is the spookiest fucking thing I've ever seen! Get it it away from me!
HASHIRAMA: Sure, just pop inside my wife's jinchurikki seal.
KURAMA: Deal! (shudders)
See, here's the thing...with canon being the way it is, I honestly don't know if you're making this up from whole cloth or just providing a snarky summation of what actually happened. Which is it?

Two takeaways from the chapter for me:

Choji is super hot. Really appreciate self-confidence and humor.

Has there been more lesbian/bi-orientation women in the story than gay men? I was listening to Dropout's Tales from the Closet podcast and they mentioned how being straight is regarded as the 'default'. There's Rock Lee, maybe, but tbh he's in a category of his own.

Considering the specific jutsu we see sealing away Tailed Beast power in canon and the fact Hashirama was a Sage, it seems like there's some sort of Wood Release-Nature Energy synergy that's specifically useful against Tailed Beasts.

Which, I mean. I'm not saying that the Nara association with Deer is meaningful, if by some bizarre turn of events they do have Wood Release. But if they did I would definitely meaningfully update "Deer Sage" probabilities in my mind.

Plan reposted, just in case. I also optimized the wordcount a little and changed the name.

Word Count: 295
[X] Action Plan: Reasonable Handling of New Information.
  • Show the letter to Jiraiya
    • Help him find a clean shirt. In the process, quickly confirm conclusions:
      • The first letter was sent through a compromised courier:
        • Everyone important probably knows about it.
        • Implies that the second courier wasn't compromised.
      • This leaves us an opportunity to continue with the marriage, but signals that she'll drop it if we won't.
      • Testing whether the courier was compromised is a cover-up: the aggressive first message likely signals that she'd strongly prefer if we did play along.
    • If we run out of time, cover these later.
  • Tell Keiko and Noburi about the second letter. Pre-empt their concerns, this one's good news.
    • Let them voice their opinions.
    • Carefully ask Keiko's thoughts on the potential second meeting.
    • Finally get Noburi's full opinion on the situation.
  • Do something calming and rote to relax a little, like making explosives.
  • Help Keiko plan for her upcoming fight.
  • When Jiraiya returns, get his opinion of the letter/situation:
    • We need to send a letter soon, to at least cancel Ami's favour.
    • Should we accept the second meeting?
      • We could try to figure out if Ami really does want a political marriage with the Goketsu.
      • A walk across the bay would be pretty OPSEC-secure.
      • We're still a bit shaken from recent events, any advice?
    • Is it still a bad idea to go outside?
  • Go watch the matches for today.
  • Verify Ami's story (if time permits).
    • Disguise: civilian.
    • Invent a backstory with Noburi. Ideas:
      • Writer interested in Mist's culinary history.
      • Secret police.
    • Visit a few restaurants.
      • Don't recount Ami's story. Inquire about restaurants' history, then ask clarifications about:
        • Connection between Byakuren's Cookbook and Experimental Cuisine.
        • Byakuren's Cookbook serving large groups of ninja.
      • Byakuren's Cookbook: name-drop Ami for regulars-only menu.
  • If anyone talks about Hazou and Ami: no comment.
A walk doesn't really include food. I wonder if there's some way we could have a picnic on the bay without using classified seals?

Alternatively, a picnic somewhere with good sight lines and no cover?

"HDK."

Alternatively: Yes.

Apropos of the Wood Release thing...

What?

Seriously, the guy can make trees grow really fast. Why is this impressive? These people over here have superuser access to reality for Ghu's sake. But yeah, sure, making trees grow real fast in order to spear someone...totes impressive. Really.

To be fair he could absorb chakra and seal beings as powerful as the tailed beasts due to wood release. Plus he could take on said reality altering ninja with his wood release. It's apparently just that good. That's not even counting the fast regen that comes with it.

I imagine you could have a picnic on the water fairly easily, as long as you don't have to sit down. More practically, we could have a picnic on the shore and then go stroll off onto the water for the more OPSEC-sensitive talk.

If that sounds acceptable to people I can try and squeeze a few more words so I can fit that in the plan.

I still haven't heard how, "summon Pakurashun", is anything less than an insta-win against anything less than an S-Class. The guy has centuries of being the single most trained, dangerous, disciplined thing around.
You kind of can't, at least not without beating keiko before she can summon. It's an elite soldier with enough experience to make a jonin shit themselves, let alone some noobie chunin/ high end genin.

I wonder, if a ninja can project stilling/soldififying chakra out of their feet to walk on water, is there any reason they can't do the same thing to lounge around sitting on water?

Without doing an exhaustive dive into the story and the QM notes, here's what I can remember. Note that I'm classifying based on what's been shown onscreen and/or from that character's POV; these are interpretations, not proclamations:

Keiko, Tenten: Lesbian.
Mari, Anko: Bisexual
Ibiki, Raeza: They both sleep with Anko, otherwise unspecified.
Noburi, Hazō, Hana, Jiraiya: Heterosexual
Gai: Definitely into women, unstated as to whether he also likes men.
Akane: Definitely into men. Her comments to Ino about "un-backing off" could be interpreted as desire for a poly relationship with Ino+Hazō. Whether she is interested in Ino carnally is left as an exercise for the reader.
Rock Lee: Possibly homosexual, possibly messing with you
Shikamaru: Asexual

Literally everyone else as far as I recall: Unstated.

I do agree that "straight" is the default assumption in most cases, but I think that's fair -- the supermajority of people in the real-life world would probably identify as straight.

Oh my GOD, the double-entrendres are just breaking my brain....

Y'all should be careful here. Pankurashun is a drill sergeant. He was a front-line soldier for a long time and then he moved into a cadre role. In MfD, authority does not equal asskicking and asskicking does not always equal authority.

If a ninja can project stilling chakra out of their feet to walk on water, is there any reason they can't do the same thing to lounge around sitting on water?
Yes. In general, ninja can only project chakra from their hands and their feet. The KishiSues Hyūga are the exception; they can project chakra from other parts of the body.

I always figured Wood Release was mostly considered a big deal because Hasirama was a big deal, and political importance aside, no one's sure which of his bullshit is due to it and which is due to other stuff.

Wooden golems able to take on the kyuubi aside, he had super-regen - was that due to wood release? A bunch of his sage stuff was probably considered to possibly be a part of it, since most people don't know about sages. It definitely has power of tailed beasts.

At the bare minimum it looks like the versatility of water combined with the strength of earth, which is probably pretty ripe for munchkinning. Creating ablative wooden armour on the spot immediately comes to mind.

No, it's basically a signature from all the Asura Ōtsutsuki descedants (Senju and Uzumaki) to be physically bonkers.
