As far as short term, during-chuunin-exams projects go, making foreign friends and, more combat-relatedly, learning to blindfight.

Omake: Use Your Words
Very few. Too general and insufficiently actionable. Now acting like you're invincible...

As Hazō finished up his second-to-last Goo Bomb seal, the building around him shook, the result of yet another exam team taking a page out of Neji's book and deploying medium-scale explosives to the task of secretly gathering information. This particular team decided the best way to gather the information was to cause an evacuation of the barracks, and then to rifle through the other teams' supplies in the chaos and confusion. Unfortunately for Hazō, this had the effect of interrupting his precision imbuing process. Feeling the dreadfully familiar feeling of perpetual falling, he saw the room fade away from him, and the sight that he hoped was never real in the first place, of a multifaceted behemoth, all he could hear was the sound of the entire universe exhaling, and then saw nothing but a red line of the Ω seal.

With a start, Hazō awoke, with both Kei and Noburi staring at him in confusion. A second later, he realized that it was because all he could hear was the laughter of a madman, which also seemed to be coming from his mouth. A quick review of his mental lists revealed why this might be, as many of his countless contingency plans for keeping himself and the rest of the team safe had been mentally replaced with countless red lines of sealing, which somehow he knew had only one real meaning - unnecessary due to accidental immortality.

Quickly racing out of the barracks and through the city, Kei and Noburi followed, shouting after Hazō's quickly retreating back, with no response other than louder laughter, until he eventually stopped in the middle of their previous meeting place off the coast. As he finally stopped, Noburi immediately summoned up his water whip and restrained Hazō, who seemed entirely unconcerned.

"What the hell is wrong with you? We didn't even have time to secure our possessions, we're going to have to waste so much time verifying that those are all fine, now!"

Looking back, rather peacefully, Hazō simply responded, "Let them try. Nothing can hurt us now. Nothing can ever hurt us again. This whole exam is a sham, there's no chance of Jiraiya allowing us to not get promoted, and since we no longer need worry about physical safety, we're free to put our efforts that would otherwise have been spent inventing countless contingencies upon contingencies just to keep us barely alive, we're now free to instead expend that effort all towards our true goals instead, of reshaping the world around us in our image. And I know exactly how!"

Looking back and forth to either other, both Kei and Noburi, fear and confusion etched in their eyes. "Hazō... I recognize from your tone that you are speaking with strong conviction, and that you believe what you are saying to be the truth, but the words that you are saying are making me very concerned for your mental health. None of the things you are saying mesh with observed reality, which you do not frequently have a problem with recognizing. Could you explain what you mean in a different way to help me understand better?"

"Verbal sealing. I've figured out how to write seals with my chakra in the very air that my speech uses, and further have the ability to overwrite the minds of others with my own. Obey and we shall rewrite this world."

At that, the team set out and began to pacify the village, using only their words.

[X] Training Hazou: Sleigh of Hand

[X] Action Plan: Preparing For the Event

Hazou's Thoughts/Plans on how Our Combined Teams should Prepare for the Event
  • Discuss this as a group of six since we are working with Team Kurenai
  • Hazou has the following Theories/Recommendations
    • Theories on the Nature of this Event
      • It is an almost sure bet we are going to have to participate in this "high class party" in some way. The preparations are too elaborate; there would be no point in all this set-up if we only had to sneak around sentries and avoid notice.
    • Recommended Preparations for the Event
      • Since "easy mode" is off, we may be expected to show up with our own fancy dress clothing and maybe even our own forged invitations.
        • RECOMMENDATION: We should all make sure we have clothing appropriate for infiltrating a high class party and review our etiquette lessons.
      • A party requires guests and servants. Possibly the guests may be made up of only exam participants and proctors, but it's likely some civilians will be needed for some roles, if only as servants.
        • RECOMMENDATION: Tomorrow we should check out places that lease temporary servants and places that could have been contracted to supply food in this amount. There's a lot of traffic in and out, possibly we could just linger around and follow some civilians going out, then question them once they're away from the proctors.
      • We need a better floorplan and there's no reason we can't get one. A place as big as that one will have had large numbers of servants working there over the years, not to mention people who have been there as guests or residents.
        • RECOMMENDATION: Go track down some people who have been on the estate and get them to help fill out a floorplan.
    • Hazou's Proposed Division of Labor
      • Inuzuka and Noburi should linger around the mansion tomorrow, track any apparent non-proctors entering and leaving, trail them to their workplaces or supply runs, and engage them to get them to talk. Inuzuka goes because he can easily track people; Noburi has the social talents to get them to open up and talk about what they know, perhaps even convincingly pretending to be a Mist ninja event participant.
      • Aburame and Keiko should go around to businesses that might be supplying the party with food, servants, and alcohol to see if they can nail down start time, expected number of guests, potential for infiltration as servants, and any special requests that might have gone out. Both of them are highly analytical and most likely to be able to make something out of quantitative clues.
      • Hyuga and Hazou should go quiz other wealthy households and their servants to try and get a better layout of the Nari mansion as well as found out what their peers and/or may know about all this... will civilians be utilized in this event like they were in the last one? Hazou goes because he's good at bullshitting and coming out with convincing-sounding stories for our questions, and Hyuga goes because she can do a "refined young lady" act in her sleep and get "gentleman of quality" falling over themselves to tell her whatever she wants to know.
      • (Unstated) And hey, this means that we watch each other and no team is tempted to hold back information, funny that.

Discussion of High-Scoring Teams

  • After making plans on how to prepare for the Event, check with Noburi and Keiko to see if they're okay discussing rival top tier teams with our new allies. If they are, proceed.
  • We have information about some of the top-scoring teams to-date, and would like to cooperate with Team Kurenai about ways to take them down if encountered prior to or during the Event. Hazou has suggested strategies.
    • If these are top competitors, it's very possible we'll run across some doing their own investigation tomorrow.
  • Team Kongo from Cloud is known to have massive combat power with Hazama Kyu who can call down lightning bolts and a taijutsu expert. But what we're really worried about is Hotoke Eru, their clanless team member who is known to be a genjutsu expert.
    • Team Kurenei has access to to unique sensory abilities that could foil genjutsu. Aburame tags him with bugs, Inuzuke takes his scent, etc.
    • Likely their team strategy revolves around Hotoke isolating enemies so that Hazama can safely call down lightning, then Ryugamine plays clean-up.
    • Strategy should be to go after and subdue Hotoke, using him as shield against area effects.
  • Team Chinin from Rock has a number of earth manipulation techniques
    • Take to the roofs immediately if you suspect they're in the area. In a social setting, try to move things to the second floor so they can't act through ground.
    • Tama Ruri sounds like the brains of the operation, but she has a "tunnel vision" flaw. Hazou suggests deliberately creating a mystery for her to solve, perhaps some codes that say nothing valuable, to distract her from our real plans.
  • Team Mugiwara from Hot Springs is supposed to be a top scorer, but we don't know much about their bloodlines or clans.
    • Tell them what we do know; suggest we should just avoid if possible since so little is known.
  • Team Genso from Waterfall is supposed to have Sakamoto Shiina who can turn invisible, sword master, and a ninja we don't have much intelligence on.
    • (points at team Kurenai) An invisible ninja sounds like your thing to stop. Keep an eye out for someone who you can sense but not see, point him out, and we'll join you in tackling him.
  • Team Retsu from Mist is made up of three ninja from our old clans and we believe they'll be top scorers. We know something about them from the old days.
    • Kurosawa Shin is a taijutsu expert. He thinks he's smarter than he is and prone to arrogance if he thinks he's got your number. Watch out; he's a pretty good liar.
    • Wakahisa Kiri fancies herself a social butterfly. The rest of her team will depend on her for chakra fill-ups, so lure her away if you can.
    • Mori Ana is... here Hazou equivocates and let's Keiko add whatever she wants to add
  • Open up floor from Team Kurenai if they have any ideas on how to deliberately seek one of these teams out and steal their word halves or otherwise mess them up in advance of the Event. They're the tracking experts.
  • Also open floor on how much information to share on these guys with other Leaf teams. It's to our advantage to put targets on their back as much as possible, but maybe there are reasons to hold back?
Investigate Team Bloodrage
  • Goals: Follow up on the Oyabun's tip-off and learn whatever we can about Bloodrage. We trust he wouldn't be wasting our time unless it was important.
    • This is second in priority to preparing for the next Event, but still a high priority and worth our time.
    • Likely hit it the afternoon of the 10th, after we've done investigations above for the Event.
  • Methods:
    • Get Hinata to sneak a peek at their room and persons (this we will bribe her for as a special favor).
      • If she is hesitant/curious about why we're interested in a team already out of the running, tell her honestly that we received a tip-off that these guys might be of interest to the Hokage in some way and we're following up as Leaf ninja, not exam participants.
    • The one thing they seemed really into before was the games that Hazou ran for them. They specifically got so into it they forgot about village rivalries.
      • Maybe play that up, Hazou to act as a game geek and show interest if Demon Country has anything similar.
      • He's thinking of doing some rules revisions, maybe get their feedback, would it be good for kids in the Academy, etc.
    • Chat them up about Demon Country and their sensei or whatever else they'll open up about.
      • Noburi and Hazou work together, Noburi to find something they care about and Hazou to show complete sympathy toward it.
    • Take notes on their mannerisms, habits, identifying markings, etc.
    • Try to get them into a bragging contest about powerful ninjas associated with themselves.
    • If they let drop anything about Jashin, follow it up as best as possible.

Celebrate Jiraiya's Birthday and Brief Him on Developments
  • Goals:
    • Make him feel happy and less stressed?
    • Toss a potential lead his way.
  • Methods:
    • Schedule a meeting with Jiraiya for the evening of the 10th (like ask to spend dinner with him?).
    • Get the present from Taiyoku, and prepare some cake or other good foodstuff to take with us. Celebrate his birthday.
      • Tell him how we got a similar gift for Mari and that we hope he knows that his family will be here with him.
      • Maybe a vague reference to hoping to meet other people he considers family, referring to Naruto without saying the name or being too specific.
    • Present him with a gift from (oblique reference to the Oyabun without saying oyabun or yakuza)) and tell him the story behind Kurohige Ranmaru's fleet.
      • Hazou will theorize that it's a message about willingness to make an ally out of someone you have recently opposed.

    • As the party closes, let J know there's a little other business. The "gentleman who sent you the bottle" had another tip for us, maybe not Exam related.
      • Let Jiraiya take the lead on what kind of security measures or codes he wants to use, but let him know we think some security is in order. If he wants, he and Keiko could even reverse-summon themselves.
    • Once OPSEC measures are in place, report to Jiraiya the Oyabun's direction to look into Team Bloodrage and anything we have learned to date.
    • Before investigation, their denial of knowledge of something called "Jashin" was the only remarkable thing about them.
    • Since the Oyabun does nothing by accident, there's probably something important here, and maybe it doesn't have anything to do with the Exam.

Cheating the Leadership exam advice for Keiko
  • Hazou had a couple ideas for ways she could get around some of the issues after their last conversation about it.
    • Summoning a competent pangolin for "Training" that she asks what they would do in the situation, and then optimizing their plan.
      • This would let her fulfill her desired role in a team even in the position of a team leader.
      • It may cost her points for not actually doing as instructed, or it may just be seen as a clever workaround for a Mori.

@MadScientist You can probably put skywalkers under Seal Syntax considering they use chakra adhesion to activate.

They don't interact with other seals, so not seal syntax. If anything it would be chakra sensor. But the categories are going to constantly overlap and there's nothing we can do abou-

Wait. I guess I could put the same seal under multiple branches? Err... Let me look at how messy this gets and get back to you.

Wait. I guess I could put the same seal under multiple branches? Err... Let me look at how messy this gets and get back to you.

A useful tool would be a seal that translates some other input type into a seal activation. Something that we could slap on top of a normal seal to make it, say, react to physical pressure.

Obviously inefficient for mass-production purposes, but a good way to test how useful a seal would be if we did change the input type.

  • It is an almost sure bet we are going to have to infiltrate in this "high class party" in some way. The preparations are too elaborate; there would be no point in all this set-up if we only had to sneak around sentries and avoid notice.
  • Hazou is guessing that it will simulate an intelligence gathering mission where we are assigned to infiltrate the party in civilian guise, find an agent at the party, identify them by code word or other signal, and then receive a further mission or objective which then has to be carried out.

My problem with this scenario is that there are 150 genin around, are they all supposed to sneak in one after the other? All at the same time? Also the estate is rented for three days, so the high class party might just be a part of the whole event and we are too focused on it.

Also what about the points? Last two events gave us quite clear objectives how to get points, infiltrating the party and getting an object/info doesn't really translate well into getting X points.

Don't really have a problem with the rest of the plan, we can only follow up on the whole party thing for now.

Updated, doesn't look too messy to me (but I've been staring at it for a while so maybe I've acclimatised).

I've just read the latest version of your signature. It is eerily plausible that Discord should be a member of the protagonist party.

Tell them about what Neji said he saw when he scouted the proctor safehouse, a variety of different apparently "fake" missions... but what's the point of putting fakes in a place where they wouldn't be seen? Possibly they represented a variety of missions to be assigned by our contacts at the party. Possibly not.

Isn't this a violation of our agreement with Neji?
