Ok, how do we deal with this? I don't think we can complete the mission if we let Kagome kill them, but I'm not sure how much better our odds would be if we try to talk our way out.

Something to the effect of, "Come on guys, we're not spies, we're casing this place for our safety. When you live, ah, outside the system, you kind of need to be a little paranoid, you know?"

Whelp, sorry people, my bad. We should have not tried to map out the town.

Emi gave this the consideration is deserved.

it

"If we're done questioning Inoue-sensei's abilities..."

Such a Keiko thing to say. It's awfully prophetic too.

The problem is that we have Kagome with us. If we try talking ourselves out of this his magical social dice are going to mess us up.

Not to mention that Hazou has our highest Deception at 12 dice.

We could try and see what happens. My first idea would be to pretend to be drug buyers that got jumpy and just wanted to make sure that they have an exit strategy prepared in case things go wrong. This is not too far away from the actual truth.

@eaglejarl @Velorien would a sufficient number of levels in Chakra Repulsion theoretically let us deliver explosive or otherwise damage-enhanced strikes?
Alas, no. In fact, you'll note on the character sheets that the two relevant skills have been renamed to "Wall-walking" and "Water-walking" in order to make your lives more difficult.

@eaglejarl @Velorien What's the weather looking like it's gonna be for the next week or so, if we can tell?
It's an overcast day, and the clouds show no sign of clearing up. Whether that'll lead to rain or more gloom further down the line, or indeed if you'll be surprised by blinding sunshine, you lack the meteorological knowledge to know.

Fixed, thanks.

I don't think we'll be able to successfully surprise Arikada; our Stealth sucks
lol speaking of which

Okay, time for planning. Quick brainstorming:

Talk our way out
  • Honestly: we're not here to take any actions against Sarubetsu or its people, we're here to stop a dangerous seal mistress from wrecking the balance of power
    • If one of their clans was the one who hired Arikada, and the grunt-level ninja don't know about it, this will get back to their superiors. If they do know about it, we may be able to turn the other clan to our side for the fight
    • If ALL of their clans have decided to bring her in, this doesn't work in any case.
  • Dishonestly?
    • Strategic spots? I have no idea what you mean, we just wanted to tour the city before we went on our way.
    • We're just passing through, humoring our paranoid uncle.
Run
  • Where?
    • Woods
    • Base
    • Woods then base
  • How?
    • Mist macerator right now, boosted tacmov away, use PMYF into the open air near one of the taller buildings (extending our substitution range!) to leap a few hundred meters, blanket-transformation to decelerate
    • Use the planning Kagome has put into the situation already
Fight
  • Walls behind and above them in the alley, kunai + explosives + PMYF rocks into the now-confined space
  • Panchipaama as a last resort

A contingency we need to be prepared for: she's not upsetting the balance of power. She has bodyguards from all three clans.

Welp, that town was nice while it lasted. It might be possible to salvage something from the crater.
Hey now, we haven't actually voted Armageddon Initiative in yet

Feck, you're right.

E: On reflection, this seems pretty unlikely (why would the Yak-aligned clan share its resources?), but it's good to be aware of the possibility.

Omake: Why We Don't Do Stealth
Idea: remember when Jiraiya said our reputation as badass missing nin might actually help in some situations?

...

You want to start with something like this?

Hazou: "Sage damnit guys, I knew we should not have tried to be sneaky. This is the Hot Springs incident all over again; we'll be swimming in jounin blood before the night is over."

Nobby: "I wish we could go through at least one mission without killing people we don't actually need to kill..."

Keiko: "Sensei is not going to be happy about this."

Akane: "Don't let it get to you guys! At least we are outdoors, have proper access to explosions, and are not out numbered 10-to-1 this time!"

Kagome: "WHY AREN'T WE KILLING THESE PEOPLE ALREADY!!?"

Hazou: "Sage damnit guys, I knew we should not have tried to be sneaky. This is the Tea incident all over again; we'll be swimming in jounin blood before the night is over."

Rice nin: "no, no, that's fine, on your way citizens" :D

More seriously, something like
"We're not spies, we're missing nin laying low. We had a mission go south in Hot Springs and we had to kill a jounin on the way out, we're just avoiding that guy's boss. We don't have any intention of harming anyone in Sarubetsu, civilian or ninja, and we're simply looking around for good E&E routes in case something does go wrong."

In real terms, we have to talk our way out of this. If we fight, or run, security goes through the roof, and Arikada will refuse to go in because she's a paranoid seal master. She'll go to whatever fallback check-in position exists and we don't know where that is.

On the good side, there's TWO ninja clans in front of us: the Irie and the Hinago. The Murano clan, which is the third clan, is absent. We can play these guys if we claim that a) We're here to apprehend a missing-nin; b) The missing-nin is a fucking crazy bio-sealer; c) She's coming here to Sarubetsu to join up with her new employer; d) If she is allowed to join it will spew bloody diarrhea all over the balance of the city.

So what we gotta do is
  1. Stop Kagome from killing everyone
  2. While they're still arguing, signal Noburi to prep some diplomacy and some Syrup Trapping and others to be ready with explosives
  3. Give them a fairly-but-not-totally honest summary of why we're here, maybe leaving out that it's J who's pissed at us, definitely leave out that we're currently working for J
  4. If they buy it, great, we go on our way and wait for Mari to extract. If not, pull up a bunker of MEW around them, fill it with syrup trap, and either run or blow them up.

I think that's too much information for these low level mooks.

I would start with the 'We are here to buy drugs and just paying our due diligence for an exit strategy.' It honestly sounds way more plausible than the actual story.

Maybe if we successfully de-escalate things and end up talking to someone who actually matters we could share what the shit we are actually doing (like what Mari is doing now with the mayor).

Besides, one of these clans is probably the one waiting for Arikada. If we let things slip now that's also a mission fail.

I agree, though the bit you quoted didn't mention Arikada.

But there's a connection between Arikada and the incident at the Hot Springs (EDIT: WHY ARE THESE NATIONS NAMED AFTER DIFFERENT KINDS OF HOT WATER!), and the people hiring Arikada should be aware of this. If they connect us to the inn incident, it will become pretty damn obvious what we are actually here for.

Yū winced to hear her loudly use Hazō's real name in hostile territory. Somebody—but absolutely not him—really needed to sit her down and have a talk about SOPs.
"What about Inoue?" Yū demanded.
*Eyebrow of Invited Elaboration*
One thing he really liked about the genin was how they didn't expect him to waste time on pointless words, the way his old team had back in… no, there was no need to think about that now. All in the past where it belonged. Even Ayako.
*shakes fist*
Of course, "undisturbed" was always the hard part…
Akane rolled nearly 800 on 11 dice, and Keiko got about 650 from 10. So that's where Inoue's good fortune goes.
Unless you forgot to include the chakra boost?

Unless you forgot to include the chakra boost?

No chakra boosting Stealth; apparently it wouldn't make sense.

Technically yes, but I highly doubt that's common knowledge.

It's not common knowledge, but it is pretty damn likely that the side looking to hire Arikada is the same one who hired us to intercept Joutaro's group. They are pretty much guaranteed to have someone in Sarubetsu and if we tell these guys who we are the word will get around. The fact that we got caught here might've already blown the whole thing, but lets hope that isn't the case.

We need to stop Kagome from using explosives. Too loud, it'll attract attention.

Weapons and taijutsu only, attack one team while accusing them of betraying us to make the other team hesitate for a second while they process that. Then turn on the other team.

Make it quick and hide the bodies, then get back to the mission.
