On a similar note, does he have any insight into whether using that teal pure stone (like the Great Seal) he can make with ES would aide his Runecraft in some way?
I expect the answer to be HDK, since he doesn't have the ability to turn it into viable substrate yet.

Even if we assume +/-50 chakra, that's still an insane amount of chakra. Either Asuma was rocking ~60s CR (entirely possible, as a THer with access to Hiruzen Bullshit THing Stuff and a ninjutsu specialist), or he had stunts that increased his CR...
Among other things, I suppose it's entirely possible Hiruzen managed to get Asuma access to ACE as early as a genin, which could be a factor. Given that the Akimichi Clan gave it up to the Contest implies that they weren't strictly against giving access to it, and it would've earned them a lot of goodwill with their Hokage. Especially if they made it a trade for some Hiruzen-Made ninjutsu.
But Asuma's dead, though, so I guess we may never know?

Is it? Every other Pangolin clan technique has "Pangolin clan technique" slapped in front of it in the jutsu doc. I also didn't think they gave us more than 5 techs: GS, PKH, PF, PEA, and Pangolin's Reach (boneless Zephyr's reach.) ((Rip exploring tongue and defend the log))
It's not, I did a deep dive.
It's was Jiriaya's. We were offered an alternative tunneling technique from them that was more chakra efficient. But we didn't get it cuz Jiriaya already had one.

EDIT: After a quick calculation, Hazo is recently 17 and has had ~5 years of training since graduation. Very good years with various IC/OOC bonuses improving his mildly above average base rate, but still 5 years. He had ACE for like 2 of those years. Assuming Asuma had it as a genin, he's had like 20 years to get XP and buy ACE. 20 purchases of ACE costs 2,300 XP, which is a lot but it also doubles your chakra without needing to buy more CR or fiddle with pyramid slots. CR 50 costs 2,550 XP doublecosted and 60 would be 3,660 XP. CR 50 with 20 ACE purchases is a thousand chakra, a bit more than triple Hazo's reserves of 315.
Similarly, the question of how the fuck Orochimaru has like 2,000 chakra came up. Orochimaru is in his 50s, call that 40 ACE purchases because why the fuck not. 8,600 XP on 40 ACE purchases tripling his chakra reserves, 4,556 XP on 67 CR. It's a ridiculous amount of XP to spend but it does explain how he could have ~2k chakra.
EDIT 2 ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: Nevermind, you can only buy copies of ACE up to your CR AB. So either some other shenanigans are afoot or Asuma and Orochimaru both got a better version of ACE early enough to spam it harder. A more realistic Asuma has CR 50s and 6 ACEs or CR 60s and 7 ACEs, for... 650ish chakra in the former case or 800ish chakra in the latter case.

Assuming Asuma has something like close to CR60, or high 50s, buying ACE up to 7 or 6 times would net him upwards of a third of his chakra pool. That could get him close to 900 CP

If the price is denominated in secret lore, it's easy enough to set an upper bound of "all you have." Folks who legitimately don't know anything interesting would get to ride the ferry for free, effectively - or perhaps owe some future service to Hidden Leaf in general and Clan Goketsu in particular.
Judging by general civilian behavior witnessed in interludes and etc, civilians are for the most part roughly as functional people as we are and formalizing "yeah we rezzed you so you owe us" via contract is going to hurt more than help compared to just letting gratitude keep them on our side.
